- How I’ve missed you, my friends. Thank you, for your patience and your beautiful messages during my absence. They’ve meant more to me than you can imagine. Today’s video is about basics. I get asked so much about how to determine dehydrated skin vs dry. Infact, many of you with oily skin are very confused as to why your skin still feels tight and flaky. I’m sharing with you my experience and what I have found has helped me. Hopefully, it’s helpful to you, too!
I have a bunch of videos coming up that I was partially through editing, some collaborations as well that had to come to a screeching halt. I am excited to get them finished for you!

@Donald Casey I watch on flixzone. Just google for it =)
@Allan Zayden definitely, I have been watching on FlixZone for months myself =)
@Allan Zayden thank you, I went there and it seems to work :) I appreciate it !
@Donald Casey you are welcome =)
❤️Miss you my friend. Every time I use the Klairs toner I think about you.
This is such an important topic for a video, there are still a lot of people out there that don’t know what is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin🙌🏼
Miss you, D!! Hope you're loving the products, love!
Does klairs toner work?
You’re the best! I moderate The Deciem and Ordinary Chat Room on Facebook and I’ve been harping on about hydration and dehydration vs dry all year. Now I can link this video 10 times a day instead 😂
Rachie Candice hey, group member here :)
you lot are the best!
There's quite a few Deciem groups on Facebook. What's the link to your chat room?
Saw the notification
My skin feels some relief 😂
Haha, same!
😂
Same here! And such a great topic!
By the way ever since i started listening to your reccomendations my skin is glowing. I even get comments after i started hydrating my skin properly
We missed you too Renee! Glad to see you're back!
Hi Renee
I am so glad to see you back. I'm very sorry for your loss, I've been dealing with one myself recently. I admit, I haven't been keeping up the best skincare routine (or any routine) since, but it's nice to feel like we're both getting back into our respective rhythms together.
Leticia M what a lovely comment and view :) hope you feel better soon!
Aw Leticia, I'm so sorry. Self-care is impossible when you're watching someone you love suffer. It's taken time for me to get back to even caring about what I put on my face or in my stomach but the ones we lost wouldn't want it that way. Let's do this together. Love and hugs.
that skin pinch method totally doesnt work. i had dehydrated skin and mine always bounced back down...cause im young. old peoples skin wont be as elastic
In the medical field, that's one way to test for dehydration. If it's tenting ur + for dehydration. Esp. the elderly they're always dehydrated.
Serena P yeah it’s called skin “tenting” and that’s actually a symptom in many other problems. If someone is that dehydrated they need medical attention lol
Exactly.
You are right. I was 17 and got really sick. My mom told me to "drink it away." I ended up drinking 1.5 gallons of water a day and eating next to nothing because a high fever reduced my appetite. My skin bounced back immediately when the doctor pinched it, but I actually needed an IV to treat my dehydration (the main issue was pneumonia). I fully do not support this tenting method, and I'd like to warn others to balance out their salt and water intake.
Yeah, that is an entirely different sort of dehydration! Your skin is the last organ to receive water, so if your skin is showing signs of dehydration via skin tenting, that is CLINICAL dehydration, an emergency only an IV can fix... not Habo Labo toner........
Additionally, upper layers of your facial skin can be dehydrated (in a more superficial, cosmetic sense, not clinical) while the rest of your body isn’t, so pinching the skin on your hand really doesn’t make sense (and again... if your hand is not tenting properly that is a SERIOUS medical issue indicating whole body dehydration that requires prompt medical attention).
Also... clinical dehydration is better assessed by the gums than skin tenting anyway. If they look pale and feel sticky even shortly after drinking some water..: time to go to urgent care!
and we have missed you, Renee! just got back from an amazing Harry Styles concert and saw this in my feed, i'm so happy! the best way to end a great evening.
that's a hard act to follow! :)
Happy to hear your voice again! 👋🏼 I was rewatching your sunscreen videos again to prep for my day out on a boat coming up
Oh. My. God. You're back!!!!! YOU'RE BACK! I missed you so much❤️❤️❤️ So happy right now🎉🎉🎉
YES!!!!!!!! THE QUEEN IS BACK!!!!!!!!!😙😙😙
😘😘😘
Yay!!! You're back. Missed you girly ! ❤️❤️❤️
You just helped me out a bunch! I have dry and dehydrated skin (perks of living in a dry climate!) and I've always wondered why my skin reacts so poorly to a bunch of acids. My favorite gentle acid I just discovered is Eco Your Skin Bedside Mask Lavender Milk. It likely won't be enough for people who are used to strong acids, but it's perfect for me! My magic combo a couple nights a week is Mizon All-in-one Snail Repair Cream + Missha Longer Name Ampoule + the lavender mask.
You're worth the wait. I never thought I'd be happily putting birch sap on my face, but the COSRX moisturizer with birch sap really turned the corner for me with regard to hydration. Great price too.
Thank you Angelina :) There are so many ingredients I never imagined I would be putting on my face, let alone joyfully, but here we are!
Welcome back! YT was boring without you.
Welcome back! We missed you, too!
Hoping all is well, and happy to see you back on the RUclips! Back to video...you’re so spot on with humidifier! I bring mine into every room in my house. Not to mention I just feel better overall in the winter with my humidifier.
YAYY! I missed your videos 😘
Miss you Joan! 😘
Going through the same 'life experience' as you 5 years ago, I really feel with you. I am so happy to see your face again. Your videos make me smile and you are the reason why I started my whole skin care journey. Sending you lots of love. 💗💗💗
SHES BACK!!! 😍😍😍
Ive missed you more dear Renee! ♥
And we missed you too😢❤
Thank you so much for this video it really will help me a lot, I'm so confusing about my skin and especially now with wiwork and temperature going up and down 😢
I just can't stop staring at your hair 😍
So so happy to see you back, Renee!
Welcome back Renee 😘 miss your videos a lot! Here you are ready to teach us more and more! 7 skin method changed my way to hydrate my skin! Thanks and hugs! Annarosa xox
I always use Hada Labo Gokujyun Lotion as a first step. I use it before my moisturizer and/or SPF. I am among the many who have missed you. Warm regards from rainy California.
Glad you are back. Missed your videos
the queen is back
I MISS YOUUU :(( so happy you're back now!! I hope you've been healthy

Omg....i missed you and your videos sooo much. So glad you are back....😚 you look glowing and i sincerilly hope that you are ok.
Thank you so much. Taking it one day at a time!
One of the most informative youtubers when it comes to skincare. Very knowledgeable and straight to the point.
As a guy i had absolutely no idea what to use, but thanks to your vids i now have a clear idea of what ingredients and products i should use.
I just want to say, I have just starting following you on RUclips and Instagram and APPRECIATE your skin/product knowledge!! I have been binge watching your videos over the last two days and feel how genuine you are! And because of that I have purchased 13 of the recommended products you have talked about in various videos. E.g The Ordinary products, Hado Labo product, CosRx product, Peter Thomas Roth product etc. I am incredibly excited for it all to arrive and see the impact it has on my oily skin. Bless you Renee!
So happy you are back! I’ve learned so much from you 💖
Yay Renee!!! I really needed this video. In the past few months I've noticed that my skin is getting drier and drier (when I was a teenage I had extremely oily skin), and I read a million articles to try and figure out if I had dehydrated skin or dry skin, but I also ended feeling more confused. This cleared up a lot of questions I had. Thank you so much!! And welcome back!!! ❤
Welcome back! We missed you!
Thank you so much for this topic, my skin is oily and prone to dehydration and most peeps don’t address the difference. Understanding that I need humectants not emollients was my game changer and I and my face are sooo grateful to you!
I absolutely, deeply, sincerely, appreciate THIS video soo much. It’s the first time on RUclips (and I research skincare a lot) that my skin type and experience has been really identified. This was very helpful! Thank you very much! Dry skin makes for an ongoing battle to stay hydrated and moisturized! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Watching your videos is a life changer for me to be honest. The difference between dry and dehydrated skin never before had been explained so well! I'm oily, but also severely dehydrated and I never knew what to do about that as nothing really worked... The heavy creams that I was recommended would only make it worse and clog my pores. Now it's all clear! So thank you! ❤️
For me, yes, Japanese and Korean Beauty products have provided the answer to my dry, sensitive and aging skin. However, it is YOU, Renee (Gothamista, you are the first one who has put it all together in language that we can all understand. Even my doctor and dermatologist could not do this and neither could recommend products with any understanding. I thank you so much for your knowledge and great videos!
So happy that you’re back!!! Can’t wait for more videos xx
You've been missed! Soooo nice to see you❤
I needed Renee in my life! Have really missed your beautiful soul. Hope you are feeling better xxx
Thank you so much for this video!! I figured dry skin meant dehydrated and that they went hand in hand but I didn't think they can be seperate in how you go about treating it. I'm excited to check out hydrating stuff and especially since my skin is very tight and flaky, I hope I can get some relief.
We missed you too Renee! So happy you're back
You are so beautiful inside and out Renee. You are so smart and amazing at explaining how products work to engage and educate people. You're my favorite beauty guru on RUclips and I kept checking every week for you to come back. Hope you are ok and sorry for your loss. Hope you have a blessed year ahead- melle B
Renee we even missed you here in Greece ,so sorry for your lose so happy to have you back!!
It's so great to see you again! xx
I’m so glad to see you are back with us! You’ve been missed. Hope you are ok.
I always learn something every time I watch your videos . You are a wonderful young lady.🌻
Welcome back beautiful! ❤
Your timing is spot on . Love your videos
I am extremely happy that you are back !!!!! Your skincare videos are such a big part of my life. Because of you my skin has made such a turnaround for the better. Looking forward to your next one already. Welcome back. 🤗🤗
You're correct! The most important thing is to add moisture to your skin and keep it in there! Regardless of skin type really because as you say it can create a ton of problems by stripping skin from oils and water.. I have just discovered how important moisturizing really is - a good cleanser that doesn't strip skin and then a toner/lotion to add moisture (hyrolonic acid, squalane, glycerin etc.) , and then a good moisturizer is really all you need for healthy skin! Of course, some exfoliation is good once in a while too.
Thank you Renee! I found you last week through a comment on another channel and I have been obsessed ever since. 😂 I just bought a whole routine based on your budget skincare videos and I am just starting to use them. I can’t wait to see how my skin responds to these products. Please keep the videos coming. You are so knowledgeable and well spoken I love watching and learning from you!
Thank you so much for your videos. I started Retin A and my skin was unhappy. I didn’t understand the difference between dryness and dehydration and was just slathering oils and creams on it. Three days into using your recommended hydrating toners and my face was in such great shape I was able to increase the frequency of the Retin A! Also, thanks for giving us budget friendly options.
I missed you! So happy that you feel ready to upload again. Your knowledge of skincare, and your peaceful, beautiful presence is so appreciated! Take care ❤ Julie
You’re back!!!!!!! We missed you and your sage advice. I’m not going to watch you now, but had to comment. Can’t wait to see watch this.!!
It's so nice to see you back again Renée ! I missed your videos so much :) I really hope you're feeling better. Take care lovely xx
Oh my goodness!!! Renee it’s so lovely to see your face again! I’ve sent about a hundred of my best wishes your way and I hope at least one of them has payed off a little. Glad to have you and your iconic, informative nature back 💕
So glad you are back! Your seven skin video made such a difference for my skin. I don’t have time to do 7 all the time, but I usually do 4 morning and night plus moisturizer. My skin tolerates tretinoin so much better this way!
Feels like a good friend is back. So wonderful to see you. I was taken by surprise by my feelings by exactly how much. Much love xxx
you are beyond gracious. we are lucky to have you back. welcome back. thank you.
I’m sorry for your loss. Glad to see you back with your informative videos.

Hi Rene , you’re back!

Thank god you're back! I've been waiting forever and my skin is falling apart
So glad to see content from you again! You introduced me to skin health I had never know and in such a calming manner. We are glad you're back and we hope all is well!
I’m so happy to see you back!!! I’ve been watching your old videos over and over just to relearn and re-inform myself about skincare. I just got introduced to Korean skincare because of you and other youtubers out there. But appreciate yours the most because of your informative method and approach. I have to say that I have a long way to go and to learn but hydration has already changed my skin a ton and using drunk elephant baby facial to kickstart the process!! Hahaha. Looking forward to your videos. Thank you!
Welcome back!
It's great to have you back, you were missed!
So happy to have you back
So happy to see you back Renee!! You really have been missed!
We all clearly love you so much! I don't know what made me happier: another great video or seeing what lovely fans you have + their sweet comments. 😄
Hello Ranee welcome bacccckkk. I've watching your videos for quite a while but I never really leave any comments.
