Brilliant , and as useful as usual! One of the biggest skin challenges I had was going from an oily, cystic acne profile to "mature"skin. I still needed to gently exfoliate, but it would bring me so close to dehydration. You just explained how to deal with so perfectly! Bravo, and know you are helping people of all ages!

Thank you so much! Clarity at last. My skin is arid dry and very sensitive so after years of wasting money I now cleanse with coconut oil, and moisturise with sweet almond oil, or even vaseline if really bad and it is the best it's ever been. It is exactly as you say; sometimes keeping the ingredient list very low is the only way to go with sensitive skin.

  • @carolinepaquier8156

Those of us with D/D skin thank you! Another trick I've learned is that the order I put things on my skin matters. The normal sequence seems to be to wash, dry, tone, dry, then put on serums and moisturizers. A more hydrating method is to wash, PAT with hands just to blot the drips , put on serums, oils, and other treatments, PAT them in and THEN SPRAY...NOT PAT...your toner onto your still damp skin and allow it to air dry. Would never have thought of doing this but it's made a HUGE difference in keeping my dehydrated and dry skin soft and moist during the day and/or night. Thanks for your tips, especially the info re the difference between skin types.

This is the video that had me find you, Michelle! I am in my late teens and still struggling with hormonal acne (the most frustrating part is that I only get pustules/occasional papules on the side of my chin, right under the corners of my mouth...the rest of my face is completely clear, I don't even have blackheads!) I would say I have both dry and dehydrated skin. Throughout 7th-8th grade, I was using a 10% benzoyl peroxide cleanser and my mom, despite the fact that my skin was extremely red, irritated and cracking, constantly told me I had "oily teenage skin", and refused to let me buy moisturizer (I cringe at remembering this)! Even these days with moisturizing at least three times a day, I am still having dull and flaking skin on my cheeks/chin, especially in summer (with swimming) and winter. I love your scientific approach and thorough explanations, thank you so much!

Very educational. I think it’s the very first time I understand the difference between dehydrated and dry skin. I have a dehydrated combination skin, and it’s very tricky to fix that condition, isn’t it? Im learning actually thanks to you :)
One thing though : I think that with the continuous use of acids and especially tretinoin it would be very wise to avoid products with fragrance or alcohols. Some of the products you mentioned are not fragrance free :( thanks god there are alternatives:) I learned this in a hard way by using products with fragrance and alcohols, and then I discovered Paula from Paula’s choice, she is so inspiring and she relies on science too, that’s what I appreciate the most, relying on science and studies.
Thank you Michelle for such a commitment
    Enjoy your day !

Lab Muffin Beauty Science oh yes please Michelle, I’m struggling with finding products frangeante and alcohol free. And as I said if all research have proven that that are harmless AND it’s scientifically logical, I would be buying the whole thing.
So please, let’s be educated !
Bottom line: my skin doesn’t like fragrance at least, may be it’s because I’m using acids and I’m a beginner with all that product
      Thanks a lot Michelle

You do a great job providing education on skincare, breaking down terms and explaining concepts. I love this approach, giving us the knowledge we need to judge a product based on its ingredients and purpose.
I haven’t personally used many of the products you mentioned but i did use Clinique’s moisture surge several years ago. I am surprised you recommend it for dry skin and not dehydrated skin. I have dry skin and was very disappointed in the product when I used it. Since learning more about skincare ingredients, I now realize it would be better suited for dehydrated skin or as a layer under a heavier cream for dry skin. (That is how I ended up using it and didn’t repurchase.) It’s ingredient list seems to emphasize water and humectants rather than the emollients and occlusives. My experience is exactly inline with the point you seem to be making. If your viewers w dry skin try moisture surge based on your recommendation without checking the ingredients, I think they will also be disappointed. This video does such a good job of explaining why a product like that wouldn’t be best for dry skin that I wanted to point out that one product inconsistency. Apologies if they have significantly changed the formula in the past few years and my experience is out of date.
Thank you again for all the education you provide.

    • @mayyasleptsova

Actually now that I've checked I think it is our (or at least my) mistake. I confused the product that you showed in your video with Clinique's Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief, which is indeed very similar to Neutrogena Boost Gel Cream by its action and consistency. However, the product you mention is Moisture Surge Fortifying Skin Hydrator, which has a rich cream consistency and can be very well suited for dry skin in my opinion. Sorry for the confusion! In my defense the Thirst Relief one is more popular and known that's why it came to my mind first, and also the packaging is identical apart from the text on it! :)

    • @whatnext715
      @whatnext715 7 лет назад +1

Maiia Sleptcova Thanks for straightening this out. My apologies for starting the confusion. I didn’t realize there were so many different formulas within the moisture surge line. The original moisture surge really is a great example of a good product for dehydrated skin but not so well designed for dry skin, totally in keeping with the content of this video. We’re getting into the season when my skin is very dehydrated and dry, maybe I’ll check out this new version.

A very informative video, love it! I have normal skin but during winters my skin would have this flakiness and always disappeared by the time the season changed. I always assumed I just had dry skin during the winter, but moisturizers aimed at dry skin would either break me out or not help at all. I’m finally getting that I may have dehydrated skin and now aiming at seeing if it really is the case.

I was wondering how she went about that with the super-light sunscreens that don't have occlusives, and she just, doesn't. At night time she does. Biore watery essence does have some dimethicone in it though. I think I'll gravitate towards that one in winter. The rest of the time it's quite humid in this region of the world.

I have used la-roche posay and avène, both are GREAT. la roche posay starting out really good, my skin improved drastically for about a while. after about 2 months of using it, I didn't see any change. I was a bit upset considering the fact I had substituted la-roche for avène . the reason for the change was because avène was just too expensive for me to keep buying. Between the two, I would pick avène. Though both products still do work wonders. French skin products always deliver. I hope I have helped someone.
PS:i am still not sure if my skin is dehydrated, dry or both dehydrated and dry.

Something I've never been able to find an answer for is whether hyaluronic acid and caffeine should be used together. Caffeine is used to shrink eye puffs, and hyaluronic acid is used to plump, so don't they cancel each other out if used in the same product? I have really bad eye puffs, and I've heard that edema over the long term can cause sagging and wrinkles, so I've been using caffeine-based eye creams for years, but once I started learning about hyaluronic acid I realized it's also in my eye creams. Same with the overnight face mask I use for my otherwise super dry and dehydrated skin. But I've also heard that you should have a slightly damp face when applying a hyaluronic acid serum and apply moisturizer right after, because if there isn't enough moisture to draw from elsewhere, the hyaluronic acid will draw it from your skin and actually make you drier. So technically, if my skin is dry, and I want to shrink my eye puffs, would hyaluronic acid make the eye puffs worse or take them away???

Oh my goodness, your videos are so incredibly helpful! Thank you so much. This winter is taking it's toll on me already, and I had to stop using most of my skincare because everything started to irritate my intensely dehydrated skin.
I really want to get on board with only washing my face at night. However, if I use an occlusive at night, I don't see how I'd be able to remove it with just water in the morning. Then I'd just be putting all my morning skincare on top of an occlusive? What are your thoughts?
Also, with Vaseline in particular, isn't it bad that it doesn't allow water into your skin? For example, if you're trying to hydrate your skin and you're using a bunch of humectants then a very effective occlusive like Vaseline, wouldn't the humectants just draw water from your skin and not from the atmosphere?

Good point about the occlusive in the morning. Sometimes it all gets absorbed and the shine is gone, sometimes not. I think it depends on the product and how much is used.

I had “normal” skin until I was 30. I couldn’t use fragrance, but my skin was good w my routine. Vanicream bar & cetaphil lotion. I started having bad breakouts & dried my skin up trying to fix it creating a horrible cycle. Now I have it about normal, but my skin is dry & dehydrated. If I don’t cleanse well at night & if I don’t cleanse in morning I end up getting bumps under my skin on my jawline, chin & sometimes one cheek depending on time of month. I would love to go back to not washing my face in the morning & I want my glowing skin back! But I really don’t like clogged pores either. Maybe I shouldn’t use layers of Cerave at night & then I could skip morning cleanse? Also I sometimes breakout when I leave oils on my skin. Squalane I had the least reaction to & going to try rosehip tonight.
But if anyone knows why I have dry skin AND get clogged pores plz fill me in! I literally have no oil on my face...

Thank you so much for the video! Just a quick question, I am a bit confused on the order I should use the products. What order do you think is best for dehydrated skin? And is the morning routine the same other then the lack of a cleanser? I find your videos very helpful, you gained a new subscriber!

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on these topics! Your pictures are great and the way you explain everything makes it easy to understand. Do you know of any benefit to using tumeric topically on your face? Thanks!!!

Eva Smoot It's possible that the curcumin has an effect but I haven't looked into it much yet!

Turmeric does absolutely nothing. The only thing that will regenerate skin and reach deeper levels are retinoids
