I got super into it trying out all kinds of actives and special products, and came out of it with the conclusion that all I really need is moisturizer and an SPF. Maybe a cleanser on a bad day. Vitamin C and retinol are good too if you want to go extra, but a lot of the other products and actives seem superfluous now.
I got waaay into it and ended up messing up my face. Between the stress and insecurity it brought me and all the products. I look back at pictures of myself from before I got into it and I looked just fine. I started watching all those skincare videos and it made me insanely insecure to the point that I started hyper-focusing on every little thing on my face. I bought SO many products over the course of two years to try and fix these little things that according to my friends, coworkers and husband, no one actually noticed. Sometimes I’d see things that weren’t even actually there and it really started screwing me up. I began realizing that no one is looking at my face so closely except for me, it was really difficult for me but I went from 10+ steps to literally just two most days. Ponds dry skin cream, a hydrating face wash and then every couple days I use a lactic acid toner. I usually forget though. And sunscreen, obviously. My skin looks better than it ever has and I only ever break out during my cycle. The best thing I ever did for myself was go back to not caring as much. Not everyone needs an insanely long and/or expensive skincare routine and I’ve personally chosen to put my sanity first lol.
That's kind of what I'm thinking is this feels really obsessive and I don't think any of this actually will work in the long run for anything that eating well and sleeping well wouldn't tackle much better with the exception of cystic acne medical condition skin care but most people just have skin and it's going to age no matter what you slap on it

One piece of advice I wish I saw more is to have enough sleep, and to get good quality sleep. For me, it's the most impactful factor for both skin health and overall well-being. So many crucial processes take place during sleep that cannot be replaced by any treatment.
FACTS i just stayed up for over 24hrs for a delayed flight and my skin looked horrible, nothing healed at all until i went to bed and my spots were a lot less red

My biggest piece of advice I give to people asking about skincare is, "sunscreen isn't skincare- it's Healthcare." People often downplay the effects of sun exposure because many of us see sunscreen as a somewhat frivolous attempt at beauty without truly understanding WHY it is one of the most important steps in protecting the health of your entire body.
My dad is hell bent on telling me to tan, like he does, and he refuses to admit that it isnt healthy. I just know he will have to remove so many moles. Every summer, he gets at least one red- sun burn!!

Honestly I don't use sun screen for about a half of the year because I live so far north and UV is literally at zero everyday. Following skin care advice online that almost forces you to wear it always seems a bit silly sometimes.
@@vnla7153I totally agree. I live in Ukraine now and before in NY, and I used to think I needed to wear SPF when I was at home, all year. In my late 20s I realized that whatever little sun I do get for 6 months of the year, I need and enjoy it for the vitamin D and the happiness it brings me, and it’s hardly so strong that it’s harmful. I’ll still wear it whenever I go out, and whenever we used to visit our MIL, since she had a yard and garden, and we spend a ton of time going back and forth, but otherwise, nope. I’ve heard of people waking up to put on sunscreen to only spend all day in bed, which I find to be crazy obsessive and unnecessary.
My top skincare tip is to EXERCISE. For me, if I go too long without getting my heart rate up, I start breaking out. One workout, and my skin gets visibly better. As long as you don't spend too much time in your sweaty gym clothes or wear makeup to your workout, breaking a sweat is really good for your skin! (It's also great for literally everything else in your life lol)
That's super interesting! I've been struggling with hormonal acne ever since the beginning of covid, which was weirdly when I stopped exercising... So I'm definitely going to try and exercise a bit every day, thank you so much for this comment :))
for me it's the opposite 😭 since i started working out (like weight training, not just cardio or swimming), my skin broke out BAD, and i never ever have acne, now i have like 5 pimples by day. for some people it accelerates metabolism and makes u break out; so keep that in mind.

i don’t do full slugging but i put some vaseline on my problem dry areas (around my nose and below my bottom lip) and it rlly does help! i have way less flaky skin and redness
def agree on the nutrition point! gut health is important, but very complicated and there's still so much research being done in the field, it really can't be simplified into "cut out sugar/dairy/greasy food for better skin." i've gone through periods in my life where i've cut out sugar/dairy, and didn't see much of an effect. "healing your gut" means something different for every person, everyone's body and microbiome are different, and those general sweeping recommendations for supplements and superfoods and restrictions are nonsense

I feel like your gut health most likely affect your skin but it’s way more individual than just “don’t eat sugar” and probably not as strict either When your gut is out of whack it affects all sorts of organs in all sorts of ways (I mean your immune system is very dependant on the gut if I remember correctly) so it just makes sense that the skin, that’s also an organ, would be affected But honestly on of the worst things you can do for your skin is getting a ED. About the diet part: my husband finds that whenever he drinks milk, his acne flares up, BAD. And I’ve noticed this whenever he drinks a milkshake as he will do a few times a year. That being said, the man still eats 2-3 servings of cheese every day of his life and his skin is usually fine 😅😂 so I think while diet can certainly play a role in how your skin looks, most things are fine in moderation
Same! I got horrendous cystic acne for a while and it went away when I cut out dairy. I find that if I go too hard on foods with dairy, I'll start to break out again

Lol yes, I used to watch a makeup YT channel and his recommendation was to wear sunscreen to bed, so you could sleep in and not have to worry. It was at that point, I rethought my life lol.
Which is terrible advice anyway because by morning it would need to be replied anyway from the way it naturally moves around your skin over time, let alone if you’re actively rubbing it off on your pillow
It's also worth mentioning that sleeping on your back means your tongue constricts your breathing passage more thus snoring happens more. So the tradeoff becomes: sleep wrinkles vs quality of sleep

As someone with very oily skin, my favorite moisturizers are ones that contain various kinds of clay. The moisturizer leaves my skin feeling hydrated but the clay reduces excess oil and leaves a matte finish on my skin rather than the typical shiny oily sheen when using most other kinds of moisturizers.
Ohh yeah totally agree with No. 7. I used to only use toner and essence on my face because I was told that moisturisers and, god forbidden, face oil, can make my acne worse. So I stripped my face of every bit of oil hoping it would make acnes disappear. Until I tried well formulated moisturisers and oils 🙃
I have oily and sensitive skin, and most products from Korean brands such as Cosrx, Rovectin and iUnik have done wonders for me. My fav in the summer is Hydrium Green Tea Aqua gel from Cosrx, and the Beta-Glucan by iUnik is an all-year-round favourite!! In winter when it’s super dry, I mix a few drops of Go-To Face hero oil with Beta-Glucan in the palms and use it as a sleep mask and its chef’s kiss. No oily and sticky but juicy and moisturised. Hope this helps! :)
Same! Oily & acne prone skin and I used to try to dry it out. Now I use hydroboost gel moisturizer at night and top it with aveeno baby eczema cream at the end of my night routine. Daytime I use oil absorbing/mattifying moisturizers before sunscreen. No more glazed donut face!
As someone who needs a very heavy occlusive to seal in the many, many layers of humectants i use, slugging of some sort is my standard! A heavy cream with urea, or a blend of rosehip & shea oils, also works pretty well.

For me things that helped my skin clear up the fastest was braiding or twisting my hair back every day. Not constantly touching my face to brush hair away was a total game changer. Also carrying a refillable water bottle around, reminding me to drink water and not constantly get dehydrated.
"Junk food" has been shown to have little to no effect on skin, so diet effects is very individual and you have to figure out what works well or bad for yourself. But then, this tip goes for everything! You have to trial and error everything to see what helps. I find exercise makes my skin clear, like 3-5 days high intensity my skin always gets so much better (pimple breakout wise). No idea what the mechanism is behind that.
Yes, same here!! I was super active before the pandemic, but I got the worst hormonal acne of my life during lockdowns because I didn't have access to a gym anymore. Once I started working out again, my skin cleared up - but not before I tried allllllll sorts of topicals (OTC and rx) and diet changes. Now I've noticed that if I don't exercise for about 1.5-2 weeks, I start breaking out. Just one or two good workouts stops the cycle; working out consistently allows my acne to go into remission. I've actually come to really appreciate my acne now that I realized this, because it's my body's way of telling me "hey! Get off your butt and move around a little!" My theory is that it's several things. Exercise helps reduce inflammation and balance hormones, helps manage stress, and promotes better sleep, which all directly influence acne. But also, I think that sweating helps fight pores getting clogged in the first place, assuming you have decent post-workout hygiene habits (which most acne girlies do, lol). Just my theory though, I can't find a lot of scientific literature on the matter.

Very late, but the best advice that my cosmetologist gave me was to wear a hat if you feel like sunscreen is breaking you out. I usually hate the feeling of sunscreen, and the summer is horrible because of that (and sunscreen literally melting off with sweat), but a little bucket hat really made it all better

I'm 31, I've had acne since i was 10 years old. Medications used: birth control, antibiotics, accutane. I needed 2 rounds of accutane 5 years apart to get rid of cystic acne. I cant use soap on my face, it gives me acne. I cant use lotion on my face in winter, it gives me acne. I have to wash my pillowcase twice a week or i get acne. I get acne on my face where my hands and fingers touch the most. I get white heads on my chin, cystic acne on my cheeks, and soft creamy bumps on my cheekbones and near my ears. Big cystic acne on my jawline. Micellar water gives me acne. The *only* face wash products that prevent acne for me include glycolic acid and salicylic acid. I use a glycolic wash, a leave-on salicylic toner/serum, and a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid for days with low humidity. My 3 little products have made my skin look smoother and healthier now... Unfortunately i have permanent, numerous, huge acne scars all over my face that cant be corrected but i am so happy that i am no longer getting as much adult acne as before!! I still get a few acnes when i touch my face too much, but the cystic bumps and creamy zits are gone... And the acne that i do get goes away so fast because of the chemical exfoliants. I will likely have acne when im 80 and in my coffin lol.

As a biology major who has very oily skin, i like to keep things simple and scientific. I use a retinol serum, BHA serum, occasional vitamin C for blemishes and a hyaluronic acid cleanser
So the diet thing - I'm lactose intolerant and for ages, I couldn't get dairy alternatives but now that I've switched to oat milk, my acne prone skin is significantly less acne prone. It did make a difference for me but I'd suggest talking to medical professional. I noticed the difference by accident and I still eat cheese have dairy on occasion.
I went through like an extreme depression where I didn't use any products soap makeup nothing like that just Ajax on my sink for the naughty parts salt rinse as well for teeth but no products other than that and everything dandruff acne wrinkles cavities all went away yeast infections everything like I stopped using extra smelly things and chemicals and soaps and just at the bare minimum and everything cleared up will my depression went away I couldn't help but get back to some things and the problems are back I did keep the no undies I know that's TMI but I don't think women talk about it the undies especially the lace undies once I stopped wearing undies everything cleared up and I never got a yeast infection again
When I made researches before starting slugging I saw a lot of people commenting that they would woke up to their cat licking the vaseline off their face, my cats did the same to me and I had to stop slugging. Cats seems to like vaseline and I don't why nobody is talking about it lol
I haven't tried it, but I have a dog who would surely do that. The dog I had before him also had a thing for lotions and ointments, so maybe I'm just prejudging based on my dogs' annoying affinity for hair products - I'm just really careful about what I put on when I'm just going to be sitting around the house now. I definitely find that sunscreen is like a lot of things in life; it has its upsides and downsides. For me, I really have to limit how many hours sunscreen is on my face, or my skin will start to get unhappy. I live in Northern Europe, so in the autumn and winter, I often don't wear sunscreen because the days are so short, and I find that my skin feels a lot better. However, in the spring and summer, the sunscreen is number 1 on my skin care. I can already see the impact it has had on my skin vs. my peers who don't use sunscreen.
Hi Michelle! I was wondering if you could do a ranking of some pricier skin care products, as well (Lancome Genifique, Estee Lauder Night Repair, etc). I'm wondering if they're worth the splurge or if there are things on the market that do the same thing but are more cost effective. My roommate had made a comment regarding that there are "weird ingredients" in Genifique, but I thought that they were pretty normal for skincare.

Of course some people overreact with sun protection indoors and when you sleep etc BUT depending on where you are, the weather can be deceptive. Where I live, an overcast sky could still hit high on the UV scale. Weather apps help a lot though!
Thank you for validating my gut sleeping tendencies. 😄I like to use a silk scarf to wrap my pillowcase when I'm sleeping on my face to not irritate my face and for the skincare products on my face. I also try to apply my nighttime skincare routine at least an hour or 2 before bed so it's absorbed.
"Slugging" saved my skin a few years ago. Came to the realization that i had destroyed my moisture barrier and the chronic painful acne around my chin and jaw was a result of that. Id really parred down my routine and cut out exfoliants and dying ingredients, but when i added the Vaseline at night I finally started seeing the boils start to heal.
I 100% agree with diet claim. I just can't stand people advising radical dietary changes when its not really supported by science that much. And when i see things like fix your digestive system I just can't help but to roll my eyes, it just sounds like typical pseudosciene with no proofs. I've really tried to look into it and there is just not much. People treat acne like its a symptom, not a disease in itself. I've heard about tests for food allergies, even about skin smears for helicobacter pylori. People are really hyperfixated about diet and skin conditions
I dont know, i feel like diet will not fix everything for everyone but changing diets have improved a lot of skin problems for a lot of people. I had really bad acne suddenly at 25 after having good skin my whole life and i didnt know what to do. I tried EVERYTHING and dermatologist told me the only way to fix that was to take the pill. The last thing i tried was cutting out sugar/carbs. Within 2 weeks my skin completely cleared and its been 2 years its still clear. Whenever i have a lot of sugar i get cystic pimples, so im sure its that. 1 thing cant be applied for eveything, i think it should've been more "MEH" than "NO"
She looks at what's good for populations, not individuals. Some people have lemon which works great, but that doesn't mean it's good advice. People are more likely to walk away with disordered eating than clear skin, with free exceptions. For things like migraines is actually not recommended people change their diet though it can sometimes be a cause because finding the cause takes such a hit on quality of life and increases stress and symptoms even more!
I bought a set of hand towels to cover my pillows at night. I like face oils and hate it getting on my pillow cases. They also work when your hair is a little wet.
Depending on your hair type and how soft your towels are it might make your hair frizzy over time from increased friction. Also, I recently got air quality testing at my apartment and the inspector said to be careful about sleeping with wet hair because it can foster mold!

I was using vaseline a lot last year. It gave me so much milia i am not free of it a year later. 😅 Thank God for AHA and bioderma cleaning gel, the only thing, that helped me with it.
mia maples tried one of those "anti-wrinkle" pillows and while yes she FELL asleep with an unsmooshed face, she woke up fully buried in it XD not one for wriggly sleepers
honestly using enough moisturizer was the best thing i ever learned to do for my skin...it's SO much less oily, it's softer, and my pores even appear smaller

So true, ever since chiodhood i had a habit of sleeping on left side. Now at the age of 18 i noticed my left side is more wrinkled and sagged. Glycerine based moisturizer literally saved my face. It works so well to my dry skin.
The dietary one actually helped me! Someone in a Facebook group mentioned how gluten was causing rosacea flares. Several people had the same experience. So I started researching and found food sensitivity could be a trigger with rosacea. I cut out wheat, corn, soy, nuts, and shellfish for three weeks. My rosacea was milder than it had been in years! So I added foods back in one by one, about three days apart. IT WAS GLUTEN! 😭 Over time, I noticed avoiding it also lessened by keratosis pilaris and some digestive issues. I wish I could eat wheat without consequences, but my body has spoken… 😔

Got sucked into a few products from influencers that I really didn’t need, and then wondered, how do I work them in ? 🤷♀️ Getting back to the basics, before I got off track. If you live in a home that gets a lot of sun coming in from windows, (Las Vegas), is it a good idea to wear sunscreen indoors ? A Derm Dr. I follow said you should be. uva comes up to 50 cm through tye glass of tye window, so depends if 1) ur windows are opened or closed 2) if you seat closer 50 cm vs further from the window
one thing i rarely see mentioned is how many people maybe aren't getting *enough* sun, which can also be an issue--obviously vitamin d supplements are helpful but they're not a replacement for good old fashioned sunshine (with the necessary protections of course). a small amount of sun can actually reduce inflammation (just don't go overboard!)

I appreciate that you mentioned that changing your diet can have unintended consequences. I have ADHD and a lot of executive dysfunction, and limiting my diet in major ways is not in the cards for me. If I feel like I can't eat what I want, then I just end up skipping meals altogether because I won't be motivated to make/obtain food. Not to mention that I just really like to eat a lot of the foods people suggest cutting out, like oils or dairy. (You can pry toasted sesame oil out of my cold dead hands!) So I'd rather just have acne 🤷
I usually get out of the shower and apply a few aqueous products on my face (thermal water, dexpantenol solution, aloe vera solution, hyaluronic acid etc.). In regions where I have acne scars and under the eyes, I like to also apply oil. Then I proceed to put on a moisturizing lotion or cream; if I feel the skins needs it, a heavier occlusive such as Vaseline or a denser cream instead of the lotion. It makes me feel like I covered all my bases, but it's good to know the water phase is purely a personal preference.
Slugging intermittently for some weeks destroyed my combination/ oily skin (which a ton of TikToks and Google reassured me was safe 😭 bc it was trendy on late 2022). It took almost a year for me to stop breaking out in ways I never had. Like most of my face were pimples. Vaseline isn’t touching any part of my face again, except as a last-resort chapstick substitute.
the 7th point!! when i realized that it changed my life!!!!! i spent my teenage years to early twenties over-drying my skin because my nose area was quite oily and i always had some pimples here and there, so i thought it was going to get better by trying to dry it out and over cleansing but oh boy was i wrong (also in the 2000s-early 2010's the skin care culture was quite different 😅)
Re: the sleep on your back thing, I've never seen the point for preventing vertical wrinkles. It's not like my pillow wrinkles in the same part of my face every time.
wow diet absolutely affects my skin!! and I know it has bc I've experimented with food when I first started having acne at 18. I started eliminating certain foods from my life for a week or so to see the reaction. dairy was the winner. it's been 12 years and I'm 100% certain my gut is affected by animal dairy. I remember reading "diet doesn't cause acne" when I was 18 and being crushed, I was so depressed. but I decided to make changes anyway and I'm glad I did.
My skin care line up is medium to large now, but i only use 3 maybe in on session, like cleanse, serum, moisturise, but the serum and moisturiser changes AM to PM and bi-daily
Can you talk about / have you ever talked about Vaseline as an endocrine disruptor? I’m super sensitive and immediately break out in hormonal acne with things like tinted sunscreens or chemical sunscreens that have endocrine disrupting ingredients, I’ve never had an issue with Vaseline but I’ve read some scary studies about impacts on fertility in animal tests.. is it a concern in humans?
It's unlikely it's due to endocrine disruption - products are formulated below thresholds to even be remotely impactful and it's mostly a myth spread by tik tok. More realistically you're probably slightly irritated by an ingredient. Vaseline is similar and designed to have any levels of endocrine disruptors below threshold given human's daily exposure. It's also in Tupperware, furniture, pesticides, etc. and skincare is likely not where you're getting the most exposure.
At around 12:45 you speak on using a moisturizer after showering; could you do a video on wet skin moisturizers like Jergens? I'm trying to not have to dry off after showering, but it won't grab all the water (even when mixing in xanthan gum)

I limit my retinoid use to once a week cause i was afraid its going to be too much but my acne problem didn’t go away until i started to apply more often especially only on my mustache and beard hair line suddenly all those acne irritation is all gone. I try using bha before and it didn’t work well like retinoid i guess each individual is different then.
Yeah my understanding is that test needs to be used relatively frequently to be effective, otherwise you're just irritating your skin regularly without retinization (or so I've read on Reddit).
This video really solidified the whys of hydration and reducing moisture loss for me (self exfoliation), even helped me confirm the science behind my hypothesis of why as an oily skin person if i don't use cleansers that target oils (but are "gentle" and promise not to strip your skin...aka leaves oils and dirt in your pores) i wake up with a gradual increase in acne starting the next day. (So sebum oxidises and hardens to block pores, wow) Double cleansing with an oil cleanser first and a "gentle" "moisturising" cleanser (aka ineffective oil remover) was one of the worst skincare advice on the internet, Good thing i stick to the same routine and products for years, so odd results are quickly noticeable. I use a cleaner that targets oils and i rehydrate and remoisturise with a hydrating toner, moisturiser and JoJoba oil. No acne when it's added oil on a clean face.
With the diet thing the only thing I’ve noticed is that I get a white powdery rash sort of thing if I eat an intense amount of rich foods, I was having Salami for breakfast every day for a while which is how I found this out 🤣

I got super into it trying out all kinds of actives and special products, and came out of it with the conclusion that all I really need is moisturizer and an SPF. Maybe a cleanser on a bad day. Vitamin C and retinol are good too if you want to go extra, but a lot of the other products and actives seem superfluous now.
I got waaay into it and ended up messing up my face. Between the stress and insecurity it brought me and all the products. I look back at pictures of myself from before I got into it and I looked just fine. I started watching all those skincare videos and it made me insanely insecure to the point that I started hyper-focusing on every little thing on my face. I bought SO many products over the course of two years to try and fix these little things that according to my friends, coworkers and husband, no one actually noticed. Sometimes I’d see things that weren’t even actually there and it really started screwing me up.
I began realizing that no one is looking at my face so closely except for me, it was really difficult for me but I went from 10+ steps to literally just two most days. Ponds dry skin cream, a hydrating face wash and then every couple days I use a lactic acid toner. I usually forget though. And sunscreen, obviously.
My skin looks better than it ever has and I only ever break out during my cycle.
The best thing I ever did for myself was go back to not caring as much. Not everyone needs an insanely long and/or expensive skincare routine and I’ve personally chosen to put my sanity first lol.
That's kind of what I'm thinking is this feels really obsessive and I don't think any of this actually will work in the long run for anything that eating well and sleeping well wouldn't tackle much better with the exception of cystic acne medical condition skin care but most people just have skin and it's going to age no matter what you slap on it

One piece of advice I wish I saw more is to have enough sleep, and to get good quality sleep. For me, it's the most impactful factor for both skin health and overall well-being. So many crucial processes take place during sleep that cannot be replaced by any treatment.
FACTS i just stayed up for over 24hrs for a delayed flight and my skin looked horrible, nothing healed at all until i went to bed and my spots were a lot less red

My biggest piece of advice I give to people asking about skincare is, "sunscreen isn't skincare- it's Healthcare." People often downplay the effects of sun exposure because many of us see sunscreen as a somewhat frivolous attempt at beauty without truly understanding WHY it is one of the most important steps in protecting the health of your entire body.

Honestly I don't use sun screen for about a half of the year because I live so far north and UV is literally at zero everyday. Following skin care advice online that almost forces you to wear it always seems a bit silly sometimes.
@@vnla7153I totally agree. I live in Ukraine now and before in NY, and I used to think I needed to wear SPF when I was at home, all year. In my late 20s I realized that whatever little sun I do get for 6 months of the year, I need and enjoy it for the vitamin D and the happiness it brings me, and it’s hardly so strong that it’s harmful. I’ll still wear it whenever I go out, and whenever we used to visit our MIL, since she had a yard and garden, and we spend a ton of time going back and forth, but otherwise, nope. I’ve heard of people waking up to put on sunscreen to only spend all day in bed, which I find to be crazy obsessive and unnecessary.
My top skincare tip is to EXERCISE. For me, if I go too long without getting my heart rate up, I start breaking out. One workout, and my skin gets visibly better.
As long as you don't spend too much time in your sweaty gym clothes or wear makeup to your workout, breaking a sweat is really good for your skin! (It's also great for literally everything else in your life lol)

for me it's the opposite 😭 since i started working out (like weight training, not just cardio or swimming), my skin broke out BAD, and i never ever have acne, now i have like 5 pimples by day. for some people it accelerates metabolism and makes u break out; so keep that in mind.

i don’t do full slugging but i put some vaseline on my problem dry areas (around my nose and below my bottom lip) and it rlly does help! i have way less flaky skin and redness
def agree on the nutrition point! gut health is important, but very complicated and there's still so much research being done in the field, it really can't be simplified into "cut out sugar/dairy/greasy food for better skin." i've gone through periods in my life where i've cut out sugar/dairy, and didn't see much of an effect. "healing your gut" means something different for every person, everyone's body and microbiome are different, and those general sweeping recommendations for supplements and superfoods and restrictions are nonsense

I feel like your gut health most likely affect your skin but it’s way more individual than just “don’t eat sugar” and probably not as strict either
When your gut is out of whack it affects all sorts of organs in all sorts of ways (I mean your immune system is very dependant on the gut if I remember correctly) so it just makes sense that the skin, that’s also an organ, would be affected

About the diet part: my husband finds that whenever he drinks milk, his acne flares up, BAD. And I’ve noticed this whenever he drinks a milkshake as he will do a few times a year. That being said, the man still eats 2-3 servings of cheese every day of his life and his skin is usually fine 😅😂 so I think while diet can certainly play a role in how your skin looks, most things are fine in moderation

Lol yes, I used to watch a makeup YT channel and his recommendation was to wear sunscreen to bed, so you could sleep in and not have to worry. It was at that point, I rethought my life lol.
Which is terrible advice anyway because by morning it would need to be replied anyway from the way it naturally moves around your skin over time, let alone if you’re actively rubbing it off on your pillow

As someone with very oily skin, my favorite moisturizers are ones that contain various kinds of clay. The moisturizer leaves my skin feeling hydrated but the clay reduces excess oil and leaves a matte finish on my skin rather than the typical shiny oily sheen when using most other kinds of moisturizers.

Ohh yeah totally agree with No. 7. I used to only use toner and essence on my face because I was told that moisturisers and, god forbidden, face oil, can make my acne worse. So I stripped my face of every bit of oil hoping it would make acnes disappear. Until I tried well formulated moisturisers and oils 🙃

I have oily and sensitive skin, and most products from Korean brands such as Cosrx, Rovectin and iUnik have done wonders for me. My fav in the summer is Hydrium Green Tea Aqua gel from Cosrx, and the Beta-Glucan by iUnik is an all-year-round favourite!! In winter when it’s super dry, I mix a few drops of Go-To Face hero oil with Beta-Glucan in the palms and use it as a sleep mask and its chef’s kiss. No oily and sticky but juicy and moisturised. Hope this helps! :)

Same! Oily & acne prone skin and I used to try to dry it out. Now I use hydroboost gel moisturizer at night and top it with aveeno baby eczema cream at the end of my night routine. Daytime I use oil absorbing/mattifying moisturizers before sunscreen. No more glazed donut face!
As someone who needs a very heavy occlusive to seal in the many, many layers of humectants i use, slugging of some sort is my standard! A heavy cream with urea, or a blend of rosehip & shea oils, also works pretty well.

Highly increasing risk of mold > more moisturized skin (imo).
For me things that helped my skin clear up the fastest was braiding or twisting my hair back every day. Not constantly touching my face to brush hair away was a total game changer. Also carrying a refillable water bottle around, reminding me to drink water and not constantly get dehydrated.
"Junk food" has been shown to have little to no effect on skin, so diet effects is very individual and you have to figure out what works well or bad for yourself. But then, this tip goes for everything! You have to trial and error everything to see what helps. I find exercise makes my skin clear, like 3-5 days high intensity my skin always gets so much better (pimple breakout wise). No idea what the mechanism is behind that.
Yes, same here!! I was super active before the pandemic, but I got the worst hormonal acne of my life during lockdowns because I didn't have access to a gym anymore. Once I started working out again, my skin cleared up - but not before I tried allllllll sorts of topicals (OTC and rx) and diet changes.
Now I've noticed that if I don't exercise for about 1.5-2 weeks, I start breaking out. Just one or two good workouts stops the cycle; working out consistently allows my acne to go into remission. I've actually come to really appreciate my acne now that I realized this, because it's my body's way of telling me "hey! Get off your butt and move around a little!"
My theory is that it's several things. Exercise helps reduce inflammation and balance hormones, helps manage stress, and promotes better sleep, which all directly influence acne. But also, I think that sweating helps fight pores getting clogged in the first place, assuming you have decent post-workout hygiene habits (which most acne girlies do, lol). Just my theory though, I can't find a lot of scientific literature on the matter.

Very late, but the best advice that my cosmetologist gave me was to wear a hat if you feel like sunscreen is breaking you out. I usually hate the feeling of sunscreen, and the summer is horrible because of that (and sunscreen literally melting off with sweat), but a little bucket hat really made it all better
I hate that I just can’t sleep on my back. I know I’m gonna end up wrinkling my skin. I move around A LOT in my sleep, which means my hair bonnet and any skincare gets messed up. So envious of people who can sleep still!

I'm 31, I've had acne since i was 10 years old. Medications used: birth control, antibiotics, accutane. I needed 2 rounds of accutane 5 years apart to get rid of cystic acne. I cant use soap on my face, it gives me acne. I cant use lotion on my face in winter, it gives me acne. I have to wash my pillowcase twice a week or i get acne. I get acne on my face where my hands and fingers touch the most. I get white heads on my chin, cystic acne on my cheeks, and soft creamy bumps on my cheekbones and near my ears. Big cystic acne on my jawline. Micellar water gives me acne. The *only* face wash products that prevent acne for me include glycolic acid and salicylic acid. I use a glycolic wash, a leave-on salicylic toner/serum, and a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid for days with low humidity. My 3 little products have made my skin look smoother and healthier now... Unfortunately i have permanent, numerous, huge acne scars all over my face that cant be corrected but i am so happy that i am no longer getting as much adult acne as before!! I still get a few acnes when i touch my face too much, but the cystic bumps and creamy zits are gone... And the acne that i do get goes away so fast because of the chemical exfoliants. I will likely have acne when im 80 and in my coffin lol.
There is a lot that can be done for scars, if nothing else you can have them temporarily filled, I am going to try the microneedling pen at some point

As a biology major who has very oily skin, i like to keep things simple and scientific. I use a retinol serum, BHA serum, occasional vitamin C for blemishes and a hyaluronic acid cleanser
So the diet thing - I'm lactose intolerant and for ages, I couldn't get dairy alternatives but now that I've switched to oat milk, my acne prone skin is significantly less acne prone. It did make a difference for me but I'd suggest talking to medical professional. I noticed the difference by accident and I still eat cheese have dairy on occasion.
I went through like an extreme depression where I didn't use any products soap makeup nothing like that just Ajax on my sink for the naughty parts salt rinse as well for teeth but no products other than that and everything dandruff acne wrinkles cavities all went away yeast infections everything like I stopped using extra smelly things and chemicals and soaps and just at the bare minimum and everything cleared up will my depression went away I couldn't help but get back to some things and the problems are back I did keep the no undies I know that's TMI but I don't think women talk about it the undies especially the lace undies once I stopped wearing undies everything cleared up and I never got a yeast infection again
When I made researches before starting slugging I saw a lot of people commenting that they would woke up to their cat licking the vaseline off their face, my cats did the same to me and I had to stop slugging. Cats seems to like vaseline and I don't why nobody is talking about it lol

The dog I had before him also had a thing for lotions and ointments, so maybe I'm just prejudging based on my dogs' annoying affinity for hair products - I'm just really careful about what I put on when I'm just going to be sitting around the house now. I definitely find that sunscreen is like a lot of things in life; it has its upsides and downsides. For me, I really have to limit how many hours sunscreen is on my face, or my skin will start to get unhappy. I live in Northern Europe, so in the autumn and winter, I often don't wear sunscreen because the days are so short, and I find that my skin feels a lot better. However, in the spring and summer, the sunscreen is number 1 on my skin care. I can already see the impact it has had on my skin vs. my peers who don't use sunscreen.
Hi Michelle! I was wondering if you could do a ranking of some pricier skin care products, as well (Lancome Genifique, Estee Lauder Night Repair, etc). I'm wondering if they're worth the splurge or if there are things on the market that do the same thing but are more cost effective. Thank you for validating my gut sleeping tendencies. 😄I like to use a silk scarf to wrap my pillowcase when I'm sleeping on my face to not irritate my face and for the skincare products on my face. I also try to apply my nighttime skincare routine at least an hour or 2 before bed so it's absorbed.
Im lactose intolerant and gave up dairy. If i cheat a little, i end up with a few zits and gastric distress.
"Slugging" saved my skin a few years ago. Came to the realization that i had destroyed my moisture barrier and the chronic painful acne around my chin and jaw was a result of that. Id really parred down my routine and cut out exfoliants and dying ingredients, but when i added the Vaseline at night I finally started seeing the boils start to heal.

I 100% agree with diet claim.
I just can't stand people advising radical dietary changes when its not really supported by science that much. And when i see things like fix your digestive system I just can't help but to roll my eyes, it just sounds like typical pseudosciene with no proofs. I've really tried to look into it and there is just not much. People treat acne like its a symptom, not a disease in itself. I've heard about tests for food allergies, even about skin smears for helicobacter pylori. People are really hyperfixated about diet and skin conditions
I dont know, i feel like diet will not fix everything for everyone but changing diets have improved a lot of skin problems for a lot of people. I had really bad acne suddenly at 25 after having good skin my whole life and i didnt know what to do. I tried EVERYTHING and dermatologist told me the only way to fix that was to take the pill. The last thing i tried was cutting out sugar/carbs. Within 2 weeks my skin completely cleared and its been 2 years its still clear. Whenever i have a lot of sugar i get cystic pimples, so im sure its that. 1 thing cant be applied for eveything, i think it should've been more "MEH" than "NO"
She looks at what's good for populations, not individuals. Some people have lemon which works great, but that doesn't mean it's good advice. People are more likely to walk away with disordered eating than clear skin, with free exceptions.
For things like migraines is actually not recommended people change their diet though it can sometimes be a cause because finding the cause takes such a hit on quality of life and increases stress and symptoms even more!
I bought a set of hand towels to cover my pillows at night. I like face oils and hate it getting on my pillow cases. They also work when your hair is a little wet.
Depending on your hair type and how soft your towels are it might make your hair frizzy over time from increased friction. Also, I recently got air quality testing at my apartment and the inspector said to be careful about sleeping with wet hair because it can foster mold!
you need natural silk pillow case , it will solve this problem and much better for ur skin and hair
@@Sky10811 thanks for the suggestion but I hate the feeling of silk. I only lasted 2 nights with it. Cotton is way softer and doesn’t stick to my moisturizers.
I was using vaseline a lot last year. It gave me so much milia i am not free of it a year later. 😅 Thank God for AHA and bioderma cleaning gel, the only thing, that helped me with it.

honestly using enough moisturizer was the best thing i ever learned to do for my skin...it's SO much less oily, it's softer, and my pores even appear smaller

So true, ever since chiodhood i had a habit of sleeping on left side. Now at the age of 18 i noticed my left side is more wrinkled and sagged. Glycerine based moisturizer literally saved my face. It works so well to my dry skin.

Someone in a Facebook group mentioned how gluten was causing rosacea flares. Several people had the same experience.
So I started researching and found food sensitivity could be a trigger with rosacea. I cut out wheat, corn, soy, nuts, and shellfish for three weeks.
My rosacea was milder than it had been in years!
So I added foods back in one by one, about three days apart.
IT WAS GLUTEN! 😭 Over time, I noticed avoiding it also lessened by keratosis pilaris and some digestive issues.
I wish I could eat wheat without consequences, but my body has spoken… 😔

uva comes up to 50 cm through tye glass of tye window, so depends if 1) ur windows are opened or closed 2) if you seat closer 50 cm vs further from the window
one thing i rarely see mentioned is how many people maybe aren't getting *enough* sun, which can also be an issue--obviously vitamin d supplements are helpful but they're not a replacement for good old fashioned sunshine (with the necessary protections of course). a small amount of sun can actually reduce inflammation (just don't go overboard!)

I appreciate that you mentioned that changing your diet can have unintended consequences. I have ADHD and a lot of executive dysfunction, and limiting my diet in major ways is not in the cards for me. If I feel like I can't eat what I want, then I just end up skipping meals altogether because I won't be motivated to make/obtain food. Not to mention that I just really like to eat a lot of the foods people suggest cutting out, like oils or dairy. (You can pry toasted sesame oil out of my cold dead hands!) So I'd rather just have acne 🤷

I usually get out of the shower and apply a few aqueous products on my face (thermal water, dexpantenol solution, aloe vera solution, hyaluronic acid etc.). In regions where I have acne scars and under the eyes, I like to also apply oil. Then I proceed to put on a moisturizing lotion or cream; if I feel the skins needs it, a heavier occlusive such as Vaseline or a denser cream instead of the lotion. It makes me feel like I covered all my bases, but it's good to know the water phase is purely a personal preference.

Slugging intermittently for some weeks destroyed my combination/ oily skin (which a ton of TikToks and Google reassured me was safe 😭 bc it was trendy on late 2022). It took almost a year for me to stop breaking out in ways I never had. Like most of my face were pimples. Vaseline isn’t touching any part of my face again, except as a last-resort chapstick substitute.
the 7th point!! when i realized that it changed my life!!!!! i spent my teenage years to early twenties over-drying my skin because my nose area was quite oily and i always had some pimples here and there, so i thought it was going to get better by trying to dry it out and over cleansing but oh boy was i wrong (also in the 2000s-early 2010's the skin care culture was quite different 😅)

wow diet absolutely affects my skin!! and I know it has bc I've experimented with food when I first started having acne at 18. I started eliminating certain foods from my life for a week or so to see the reaction. dairy was the winner. it's been 12 years and I'm 100% certain my gut is affected by animal dairy. I remember reading "diet doesn't cause acne" when I was 18 and being crushed, I was so depressed. but I decided to make changes anyway and I'm glad I did.

My skin care line up is medium to large now, but i only use 3 maybe in on session, like cleanse, serum, moisturise, but the serum and moisturiser changes AM to PM and bi-daily
I only use Vit C serum + sunscreen in the morning and Tretinoin + face oil in the evening. And my skin is doing fine.

Can you talk about / have you ever talked about Vaseline as an endocrine disruptor? I’m super sensitive and immediately break out in hormonal acne with things like tinted sunscreens or chemical sunscreens that have endocrine disrupting ingredients, I’ve never had an issue with Vaseline but I’ve read some scary studies about impacts on fertility in animal tests.. is it a concern in humans?
It's unlikely it's due to endocrine disruption - products are formulated below thresholds to even be remotely impactful and it's mostly a myth spread by tik tok. More realistically you're probably slightly irritated by an ingredient. Vaseline is similar and designed to have any levels of endocrine disruptors below threshold given human's daily exposure. It's also in Tupperware, furniture, pesticides, etc. and skincare is likely not where you're getting the most exposure.

At around 12:45 you speak on using a moisturizer after showering; could you do a video on wet skin moisturizers like Jergens? I'm trying to not have to dry off after showering, but it won't grab all the water (even when mixing in xanthan gum)

I limit my retinoid use to once a week cause i was afraid its going to be too much but my acne problem didn’t go away until i started to apply more often especially only on my mustache and beard hair line suddenly all those acne irritation is all gone. I try using bha before and it didn’t work well like retinoid i guess each individual is different then.
Yeah my understanding is that test needs to be used relatively frequently to be effective, otherwise you're just irritating your skin regularly without retinization (or so I've read on Reddit).

This video really solidified the whys of hydration and reducing moisture loss for me (self exfoliation), even helped me confirm the science behind my hypothesis of why as an oily skin person if i don't use cleansers that target oils (but are "gentle" and promise not to strip your skin...aka leaves oils and dirt in your pores) i wake up with a gradual increase in acne starting the next day. (So sebum oxidises and hardens to block pores, wow)
Double cleansing with an oil cleanser first and a "gentle" "moisturising" cleanser (aka ineffective oil remover) was one of the worst skincare advice on the internet, Good thing i stick to the same routine and products for years, so odd results are quickly noticeable.
I use a cleaner that targets oils and i rehydrate and remoisturise with a hydrating toner, moisturiser and JoJoba oil.
No acne when it's added oil on a clean face.
With the diet thing the only thing I’ve noticed is that I get a white powdery rash sort of thing if I eat an intense amount of rich foods, I was having Salami for breakfast every day for a while which is how I found this out 🤣
