- Dear Friends,
If I look back to my violin making career and my violin varnish career, it seems very clear that the most important advice I can give to all of you (Musicians and makers) is:
"Get more basic information!"
Therefore I would like to explain here the main and basic difference between Spirit (alcohol) violin varnish and oil based varnish.
I think too many people talk about too many complicated issues, and they actually don't know the basics. This creates most of the time only more confusion.
If you follow my channel, you should know that I share here very precious knowledge for free and

Edgar Russ Distinguished Violinmaker thx for inviting me, I hope see you soon
Really like to see your work shop and see you as well
can you back-fill a partially full jar of oil varnish with Ar or other inert gas? I have seen these sold in small amounts for similar applications.
Always awesome information !!! Thank You !!! Ice been using shellac lately with good results ,,, but time will tell if this is a good choice , ,,,,
Years ago I judged makers by what kind of varnish they use. Time cooled me down on this matter. If it works and you are happy with the result stay on your method. It is part of your style and reflects your process of becoming what you are.
Changing makes also part of this process.
😉
Thanks a lot
Stay tuned, soon the oil varnish video goes finally online.

make some shellac castings!!!
So what’s better oil or Spirit for Violín
Have you ever used a compensated/harp style tailpiece on an instrument? If so did it make a good impact on the sound? If not would you ever try one in the future?
It sounds very unbalanced
Please describe their effect on violin sound.
I recall having heard some people use marbles, clean stones or similar to fill up the volume of varnish or oil and replace the air.
Have you ever experienced a glass container to actually break?
David Rekowski I use glass marbles. I insert them to bring up the level with the top of the container make sure the lid has a good seal, then I turn it upside down. My theory being because the container is inverted there’s less chance of air entering.
Seems a very good idea.
Thanks I will try it as well.

@@bluehoo0 Great!
Thanks

InstaBlaster...
Meanwhile I've been using Stopp Loss Bags for oil finishes and I they seem to do a great job of keeping the air out as well as allowing controlled pouring. Might be worth a try.
what does that square cello thing on the shelf sound like?
😂 No idea! Has been a gift from an apprentice from Mongolia. I lost the bow 20 years ago. And the apprentice has stolen/not paid two violins which he took on trial.....!
😢

Worse betrayal in history.
It’s called VOC “Volatile Organic Compounds”. Gas in the air.
