- I had high hopes for a productive shore dive on the south coast of England and had a few missed opportunities. As always though, persistence pays off and something ends up in the kitchen for dinner. A take on cacio e pepe that was inspired by Tom Brown of Cornerstone Hackney using a cephalopod I've never caught before.

And this is how to make a good video of a not so good day...
Thank you!
uk summer 2023 spearfishing summed up perfect , nice dish so simple
It’s been pretty grim so far. Still managed a few fish in between the turd.
i’ve abandoned my local spot the fish havnt turned up, had a pb bass last month then it died, turned my attention to torbay scalloping and that’s doing very well
Thanks for showing that not every trip brings in loads of fish and that even the experts miss fish!
Glad you enjoyed it!
So we’ll dressed in the kitchen Daniel, I’m impressed with the lack of Cacio e Pepe on your shirt!
Dress for the job you want and wear dark colours when cooking!
I wouldn't dare to swim this far out in the Adriatic... Boats don't care about floats around here. Most of the time it's a "oooh, what's that orange floaty thing with the flag over there? I better go check it out"
Another great video, Daniel! I do like it when you add a kitchen section on preparing the day’s catch. I will confess that I am not an “adventurous “ eater by any stretch, but in my old age I am trying more and more dishes.
Amazing how you create such videos. It was a pleasure watching! Keep on keeping it real!
Your videos are just awesome man. Been going through a rough patch in life lately and these videos give me calm and good feelings. Thank you.
Glad you like them!
No stranger to rough patches. Hope ye find the smooth. Peace from Scotland. ✌
@@sporranheid Thank you! Things are looking smoother alrdy!
@@downdabeach Good to hear! All the best. Mark
It might not always go to plan, but I'm impressed you found some sun this summer. Its been a grey one this year.
Great video as ever, thanks.
Tell me about it! June was stunning, up to 30°C for days on end. I think there has been one day in July I can remember that was turbo sunshine. Planned to go to the pub for lunch as it was a Friday but then got a call for a job that afternoon 🤦🏻♂️
Your videos always brighten my day. 👏👏👏
Amazing! Thanks for shearing.
Man seems like a great day to me, thanks for sharing the cooking recipe!
Thanks Dan,
Loved it!
It looks very delicious! thanks for sharing Daniel!
Great Video, even with tuff conditions and non cooperative fish.
Loved the structures and definitely have to try the recepi 👌
~~~~~~
Thanks for sharing your hunting experiencia.
I enjoyed the video and of course i will try the recipe!
Here at Mallorca the same mullets and some barracudas.
Greetings mate and
DIVE EVERYWHERE
Thanks Dimitrios!
Poor visibility in the water in the middle of summer. Not unknown here either. The fish was slightly spooked this time. But at least they were there. Nice vid😊👌
Love your channel . Cheers for sharing 😁👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Brilliant Daniel… As others have said, I love the cooking part as well. Just watched this first thing this morning and makes me want to have cuttlefish for breakfast.😂
Let’s hope we can find some more out there this year. Tasty critters.
I live in South Florida and I'm very impressed at the distance you swim from shore.
Great video as usual, thank you Daniel! 5 mm in the summer…brrrrr 😂!!!
Cacio e Pepe is a tricky recipe and perfection is easily missed, even when using pasta and not cuttlefish tagliolini 😊.
In my opinion, as Italian, it looks very good already, but I would have certainly warmed up the starchy water (what a nice touch to keep it aside from the night before!), and I always try to make the pecorino sauce at the very last minute and keep its temperature as close as possible to the “pasta”. All easy to say but not so easy to do 😂.
Congratulations, you are great under the water and in the kitchen as well!!! 🎉
I should definitely give it another go. Thank you for the tips!
Great video as always, i think id cook the sauce first and stir the cuttle through at the end for 30 seconds to just cook it through. I visited Cornerstone before and have made his chicken butter sauce which is unreal
I think that sounds like a better way to do it. Will try that next time 💪
Shooty cooky yum 👍😊
It's good to see that I'm not the only one that has days where fish don't enjoy the sight of me. This happened on my last dive. Top chef Dan, change of career maybe?
Thank you, not sure I’m ready for another career change, sparky to cinematographer was enough of a shock to the system!
greetings from Philippines Man! 🇵🇭
Good fishing! Now I’m hungry.
I believe you did good, great plate with the mollusk, even when the dive wasnt that good.!!
Great video. Here in Brazil it is winter, it is almost impossible to practice spearfishing.
I had a similar day yesterday. Shoot at a grouper in the rocks. My speak got beyond stuck. Over an hour of dives up and down trying to get it unstuck 😂 I was literally at, alright I know you said you'd cut it off but this is your real last attempt. Then wiggle wiggle, it's free! 😂 got a small grouper and big eye snapper after that
Awesome quality as always
I would love to see a video about some breath hold techniques you use 😁
I’ve got a video entitled ‘Why you can’t hold your breath longer while spearfishing’ that should help.
@@DanielMann Yesss, thank youu
Sup Daniel! I just got into spearfishing but i got a bit of knowledge in cooking. Id suggest you to put butter first in the pepper and infuse the butter with it and then put the pasta water, it will create a better base and sause. Cool vid tho
Thanks for the tips!
Does not go as planned but went pretty good bro! Nice video as always mate!
Cheers Johnny!
Poor mans dinner 😂😂😂
Last time I went snorkeling I found some cuttlefish and bass too, might have to buy myself a speargun😃
Definitely worth it for the dinners!
Nice
That thumbnail.... "Day 32.. I was swept out to sea a month ago. I want to say I think I need a bigger boat but I don't want to push my luck".
Monrning daniel you are very welcome to french bretain for enjoy good quality water brother, you are so close to and never even done any videos about your video are amazing keep going hehe
Always love your content. What are your sunglasses?!
Thanks Casie, these are the shades 😎 www.mokenvision.com/en/hawkins/419-464-hawkins-3760314192507.html#/259-color-sauge
I was on holiday in the Orkney islands (Scotland) a few years ago. The water was crystal clear and blue, must have been 10-15m viz. I would have given my left nut to jump in for a spear. The locals thought I was crazy lol.
I litteraly had a similar experience today
They happen more often than we like 🤣
really great job, very creative - no ink with that?
Ink sack was empty after I shot it unfortunately.
would love to see your headmount situation
man you should really start a second RUclips channel for cooking.. Your videos in general are very relaxing to watch but ur cooking segments have a totally different vibe and I really enjoy them.
Something to consider in the future!
👍👍
woooow nice video
Great video
I like your choice of floater which doubles as a container to transport the gear.
Where did you get it?
Is it adapted or it was made for spearfishing?
Is it connected to your gun?
It’s no longer in production. It’s called a seyvlor dive hunter. I guess it was designed for swimming and spearfishing. There are several others on the market now but none as good as this one I don’t think.
Videoların çok güzel kardeşim. Türkiye den selamlar. Başarılar dilerim.
Surprised to see how easily you cleaned the cuttlefish up. I caught a nice one out here in Japan recently and made a right mess in the kitchen with the ink sac. Wife not best pleased.
I think mine must have released all the ink before I cleaned it!
Looks delicious 👍🏻
What about that seabass at 3:02min. ? On your left.?
That was a Ballan wrasse.
Hey Daniel amazing editing as always, what is the longest distance you swam with that kind of buoy?
Thank you! I have been 2.5km out to sea on this buoy before. Most swims I do range from 2 - 6km in ground covered.
Great video again mate! what sunnies are you wearing at the start?
I second this.
Goodday sir
great video but I wish you weren't diving alone.
How do you know if there big enough to shoot/ have you had any undersized?
You can generally tell by the shape of the fish and the size of the eye. Also just comes with experience over time knowing what size they are. If in doubt, don’t shoot.
Cook the cacio e pepe lower temp other wise the cheese becomes stringy and separates the mlik and fat from the water , nice recipe though
Great tip, thank you!
Great video and thanks for the amazing recipe! What camera and housing was that on your head? I’m looking to upgrade my GoPro hero 8.
Thank you! That was the DJI Osmo action 3. I think a new one is coming out in a few days which I’ll be keen to try.
@@DanielMann thank you so much! The video quality looks really good. You’ve been using GoPro for a while. How do you like it underwater compared to the GoPros?
It’s battery life is fantastic and I’ve had no reliability issues. Always turns on when I want. More than I can say for the GoPro. Still figuring out the best configuration for image quality but very happy so far.
After pride week my hood was not clean
Ha ha ha
wait what beach is this?
How do you train to be so long under the water?!
How do you keep safe while diving solo? In hawaii we just had a string of diving accidents and was wondering what you do to prevent things going wrong? Love your content by the way, your the reason i started using a band on my flopper, buying a sportube, and a body board style float.
Damn I was recently diving in hawaii, what went wrong?
I guess you’re never 100% safe out there. Here we don’t have problems with sharks so that helps. I always check the weather, know what the tides are doing and it’s all under about 12m generally. Some places I dive that are deeper I go with someone else but I’m happy with the risk level on these shallow shore dives.
@@DanielMann Gotcha gotcha, stay safe man and keep it up!
@@griffintaylor8882 In the past week or so 2 freedivers died diving together in north shore, and a 17 year old just drowned while diving with friends on big island
@@hit1955 oh shit man that’s crazy
The "pasta" looks delicious! Would love to hear your thoughts on the DJI Action camera vs GoPro!
The Osmo is the most reliable action camera I’ve used. Always turns on when I want. I prefer the colours I can get from the GoPro with grading in post but the Osmo is pretty close. Lastly, no burst photo mode on the Osmo is a real shame and something I miss having from the GoPros.
@@DanielMann thank you, interesting about the colours! Would you say the larger sensor of the Osmo makes a major difference?
I’m using the Osmo 3 so I think it’s the same size sensor as the GoPro. I’ve heard good things about the Osmo 4 and will consider getting one for sure.
What a cool way to serve cuttlefish, love seeing the whole story.
What’s that little orange thing wrapped around your flopper?
its a little oring/rubber band. keeps flopper from..well.. flopping. Some think it scares fish by rattling an sometimes its distracting or blocks your aiming if its a top side flopper.
Handy for using around caves and kelp as your flopper doesn’t get caught when retracting your gun.
what sg are you using for these conditions?
Sg?
@@DanielMann haha - been chatting with Filipino Spearos too much. SP - spear gun! ;)
I’m using a 75cm Meandros.
@@DanielMann thanks
Ottima la seppia ci fai degli spaghetti al nero squisiti.
Awesome video as usual man!
It would be fun to see you and Aron (@KeyWestWaterman) do a couple of collabs, i got a feeling that you two would make great content togheter! 🙌
Aaron is making some great videos and he has so much variety on his doorstep. Would be great to get there someday.
it never goes to plan when I go fishing.. odd stuff
New mask? Replaced the ol' aqualung micromask? I'm currently in the market for a new mask now my salivimar Noah has sprung a leak.
They don’t make the micro mask anymore so getting ahead of the curve as my stocks of them have plummeted. Omer wolf fits great and has more vision.
info on that float anchor?
Made by Omer.
@@DanielMann Does the Omer weight keep that float in place under such conditions or did it drag?
With all four floppers out on the anchor it holds in just about all terrain without dragging. Except maybe pure, fine sand.
Great video :) Why do you have a little rubber band on you flopper :)
Stops on getting caught on things when hunting in kelp and holes. Also doesn’t scare fish from the flopper moving and making noise.
Did u moove back?
Back to where?
Back to england
Never left, just went on a long holiday.
Can you spear fish in the night
Not anymore in the U.K. or most places in Europe.
That’s over fishing … “not many” was not the words people use just 50-70 years back
Not necessarily. Some places I have only work with certain currents or conditions. One part of the day there won’t be a fish there and then things change and it’s like an aquarium.
How the heck do u know when ur on location? Do u carry a gps/fathometer?
Yahoooo
I do have a GPS with me that I mark places I want to come back to. With very small isolated rocks and being a long way offshore it’s hard to find them again otherwise.
@@DanielMann can u please tell us a bit about what u ude on a paddle board? Battery ? Waterproff box ?
Etc. ? Brand ?
This is super interesting. Yahoooo
I’ve never used a paddle board. I don’t have a fish finder/depth sounder/sonar. Only a handheld GPS.
@@DanielMann thanks, i will look for a handheld gps. Getting it here might be crazy.
Thanks for the videos.
Yahooo
Do you dive alone ....you not concerned
Yes I do. It’s about acceptable risk for the individual.
