Next time you go back to the oyster Islands. You can toss them into your kayak and shuck them while your sitting inside the kayak so you can work at your pace. Still be able to toss the shell back to the island as well
Pro tip! I realize you can't remove the shells from the oyster beds in Puget Sound. A faster method is to grab as many oysters as you are allowed by law and load them into the kayak AND THEN shuck them. Then you toss the shells back onto the oyster bed as the water rises. You abided by the rules and laws and retrieved more oysters. PLUS: you can eat more of them along the way! Bring your Sriracha/Lemon/cocktail sauce and enjoy an after of gluttony on the kayak! BOOM Baby!
Oyster islands...sounds amazing....kayak, bucket, knife shucker, and boots and gloves....gotta live the seafood!!! Nice job!!! Nothing like fresh oysters!!
Wow!! what an amazing video! Jocelyn is such a lucky lady. When I was growing up, my aunt and uncle owned some land on Lasqueti Island off of the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. That island (back in the 70's) was made of oysters! My cousins and I filled our buckets with fresh oysters and my uncle roasted them over the campfire and I learned how to do that! They were ready when they opened and started to shed water. I ate 20 oysters in one night at age 12 and I was in HEAVEN!
Good lord that's not frying . The man here fried the Oysters in what's called GREASE. Hopefully he has enough sense to flee the area . Especially after the ANTIFA guy harassed him about what he's doing there.
The shuck 'n take policy is really interesting. The satisfaction of squeezing lemon into the shell and slurping oyster is a small price to pay for such gorgeous meat.
I recalled watching a documentary for oyster farming and they used old shells to seed new ones. I think that's why the law requires you to shuck the shell.
@@RoseNZieg regardless it's still very silly. They aren't fixed objects once you put them back and aren't that valuable to the next generation of oysters. Would be much better to simply plant large stones, but that would be far too much money for the state to waste, when instead they could simply be pocketing those tax dollars for a new boat
💛...you keep getting better and better...and you know when taku rolls his eyes back and closes them, it must be heaven...also, 'not so po no mo'...best line ever...
I remember helping plant some new oyster reefs in the Chesapeake. It’s really cool to see some super healthy oyster reefs like this, they are essentially the cold water equivalent of coral reefs. Super diverse, thousands of different species can be found hiding between and chilling around oyster reefs.
Besides the awesome content, I really appreciate your different camera angles! Watching you cut that bull kelp and how you positioned your knuckle towards the knife.. for someone who loves food and is a very inexperienced “cook” it’s nice to watch and learn from your videos!
Taku, Jocelyn, that was a super cool show. I was thinking, man would I hate to run my boat through those oyster bed islands, that was awesome seeing that. That meal looked so amazing. We have been watching Mitsuki quite a bit too. What great content from you and her as well and Jocelyn also. When my wife and I are not fishing we enjoy watching much of the fishing content from Japan and I am going to check out Rosetta Stone and learn to speak and understand Japanese. Some of the translations are way off, so I gotta do it. Have a super trip. Thanks again for the great stuff you share. Danny and Kim, San Diego, CA
Back in 2018 I bought my first brand new car (which was a 2018 Ford Fiesta SE) and I took it on a vacation to Washington and it was so nice out there I ended up getting a job in Sumas, Washington at a blueberry cooler and I lived out there for 4 months. I remember I used to go to Bellingham every single weekend. I would go to Locust beach and it was awesome. It became my favorite beach. That beach was always so calm and quiet. Very peaceful. I used to lay down in the water where I would enjoy a beer and a joint. One day I'm gonna go back and I'm gonna take my kids.
A little safety tip: incorporate a small hook anchor in your Kayak. Leaving your kayak to float on it's own, turn your back too long, and/or a gust of wrong wind blows it away, and you'll be swimming home.
Thanks for the video keep them coming! My Buddy is from Washington he said to throw the shells in the water so the next people get to see fresh patch. Leave no trace we call it . Keep doing what you do Gracias!
Darn those Po Boys looked good. I understand what Jocylin was saying about not liking cooked oysters made by others. I never liked fried oysters because they were too strong tasting and I thought it was because they were too big. I then had smaller oysters just thrown on the bbq and when they popped open they were ready, and delicious! I think the big ones might have been over cooked.
Hey Taku, the next time you're in WA, you should do a catch and cook with Leif of NWFS, I think it would be super fun for both of you. Also, I used to work as an oyster shucker for a the biggest seafood company here in WA, so if you'd like to learn how to speed-shuck for times like this, I'd love to teach you(and I'm sure learn a lot from you along the way). Cheers, from South Puget Sound
That's tasty looking as I'm a fan of oysters, and that's my kind of island! I'm thinking I need to make a trip up to Washington myself. Thank you, Taku for sharing this video.
I was driving on the coast on the way to a mates wedding and I kid you not, there was SOOO many oysters everywhere, I mean it was soo much they were even growing on the trees, smothered the beach, it looked like it was trying to consume everything in its path, it was awesome! I can't wait to go back and eat as much as I possibly can!

As a child my dad and I would shuck them on the beach and do shooters with them followed by a beer. My job was helping to collect small ones and keep track of the Tabasco sauce. This was the 1970’s. I have great memories of doing that with dad!
Great video Taku! Gotta say, when you first shucked the oyster and put it in your basket, I was ticked, as the liquor is what makes oysters so good. Then you told us about the required shucking. Lol. That ‘tartar’ sauce looked so good. Being from Nova Scotia, I guess I’ll have to go to the beach and get some kelp. Wicked sandwich. Thanks for sharing!!!

Need a better strategy lol Fill your kayak with oysters. When the tide comes in, hop on and start shucking and throw the shells out. Also, if you want an extra plump oyster, you want to look for ledges, the space at the bottom allows their shells to thicken.
I always love a good Taku and Jocelyn episode, but I love them more when your on my doorstep. Thank you two for throwing some southern po boy spice In my life 🤓 Get ahold of me when you come back for more tips and places to see and visit. Much love from the Hurn family
I think this is the only catch & cook oyster video on RUclips I like, I gotta make some plans to go out to Washington. For what I’ve been seeing that’s the fishing spot here in U.S
Ive made a lot of meals on this channel based on what he makes since their is a huge asian grocery store less then 20 minutes from me... almost all exact ingredients and I can tell you they are so amazing.. of course I had to dub down on a few fatty ingredients since I got total hip replacement surgery about a month ago, cant have added weight on my new titanium hip...still practicing on cutting sushi though, that will take some time to master.. even the experts of sushi chiefs haven't mastered it.. takes years and years of patience
I once ran aground with a sailboat on an oyster bed and had to wait for the ride to rise and lift the boat off.. while we waited we ate a few oysters and was sick as a dog. Bad move on my part haven’t been able to eat them since.
If your brine is hot / just boiled . You could pour it over the kelp and that will essentially blanch it as well as pickle it. It’s called a hot pickle. Excluding one step which is the blanching .
I've made 3 diff youtube accounts since 2006. And I always come back. Luv ya channel and all you do on it. I've learned so much over the years. Keep it up dudes.
Dayam Taku!!! I just finished making up and eating some amazing seafood fettuccini in (Unfortunately store bought) Alfredo sauce and I'm stuffed. But after watching this video I'm HUNGRY AGAIN, LOL😂😂 Just another great video for viewers. Thanks for this EPIC video Taku!!!!👍👍
Seahawks game Sunday, Taku and Jocelyn! Tailgate food is very popular and not to expensive!! There is a whole street of tailgate foods. If you ever have the time on a Seahawks game day check it out. Check out Carnitas Michoacan up on Beacon Hill. Real Mexicans like myself. Food is off the chain good!! Glad you all like Washington!!
Would get it near a storm drain . They don't clean the poop or the needles up there are so much homeless and illegals there it's basically a tent city with buildings glass all over the sidewalk .
Being from Louisiana I can honestly say you did that Oyster PoBoy justice ❤️❤️. That’s the biggest Starry Flounder I’ve ever seen up there. Most I caught when I was in WA were palm size
that is insane!! never ever heard of actual oyster islands lol.... also ive never had oysters before :( Seeing your videos makes me want to go outdoor fishing!

You can only have 18 oysters a day. Everything you eat counts towards your limit.
Knife skills pretty legit
You can remove them from the area not the beach, but you have to bring them back to the same level you got them from.
Thanks for the clarification bud - much appreciated!!!@@duckwacker8720

You and I great minds:)

The fact that you were a pro chef always leads to your catch and cooks being on another level.
u dont need to cook oysters
