Cod in Denmark aren't always an easy target spearfishing... Crazy thermocline + Giveaway winner!

  • I took my dive gear on a quick work trip for one night to Denmark from London. Last time I went diving here the water was 3ºC and hardly any fish. A few months later I decided to take my speargun and see if I could get one of the famous Danish cod for a catch clean cook. Previous experiences in Denmark spearfishing lead me to believe this would be a fairly simple task however in this location they were much smarter than cod I have seen on the other side of the country. Also the winner of the mask giveaway is announced so if you are that lucky person shoot me a DM on instagram to claim your prize.

    Mate you might know this or not but this has to be one of the most inspiring videos on youtube. The reason for that that this is a great example of living life to the fullest and using your time effectively. On a work trip to another country and finding time to dive, spear a cod and cook it outdoors just hours before the flight back. Really inspiring stuff and thought provoking, how can we best use those pockets of time most effectively in an otherwise busy life? I think a lot of us wait to do stuff we love until the weekend or times we have the whole day free. But you're showing that it can be done at any time. Awesome

      Hey Will, I appreciate the message! I’ve never given this video much thought other than the fact I had some time up my sleeve. It was either sit at the airport drinking pints for hours or go for a dive. Very true that we always wait to do things, not just do them.

    I wish I had seen this one while my comment had any relevance! Ahh well..
    You are continuing to impress by doing a fantastic job as a videographer, narrator, (studly performer!) and behind the scenes editor! I love cod for fish and chips as much as anyone does of course, but the one thing I cannot do here in Oregon is catch one on rod and reel or spear one. They are many miles offshore sadly.
    The video quality is amazingly clear such that the thermocline is easily noticeable on my laptop and my tablet. I can't dive anymore, but even when I could I don't recall ever observing a thermocline at all. Thanks for including it in your video 🤘😁🤘
    Now I am so craving a nice freshly caught and cooked filet of white flaky 🐟 filet!

    Daniel, I do realize this video is 3 years old. I was amazed at the visibility! I learned to scuba dive in landlocked Oklahoma, USA. Most of the time our visibility was just a meter and a half. Occasionally, we would see 3 meters in the summertime if conditions were ideal. That cod was a good sized fish. I enjoy just being in the water, no matter the vis. But more vis is definitely a better dive!

    Love your channel Daniel! Am I right in saying most of your Danish diving vids are pretty shallow - ie. less than 10m?
    My girlfriend (Danish) and I got heavily into spearfishing after moving to Sydney 12 months ago, and her family are trying to entice us to move back to Denmark with the promise that we can still spearfish there - you're slowly convincing me they aren't totally wrong (although the dive sites aren't quite as picturesque!)

      Most of it is shallow yes. Particularly my dive at the Öresund cup in 2017 with lots of cod. Some of the wrecks can be deeper in 15-30m but most fish I shoot in Denmark are under 8m.

    Awesome vid dude! What were those fish hanging in the thermocline? Are they non edible or protected?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  5 лет назад +1

      They were coal fish or as the Nordic name is saithe (pronounced say). You can eat them no problems I just wanted a cod as the coal fish are a bit more oily and lend themselves to different styles of cooking. Plus they can grow up to 20kg.

    Daniel,
    Nice videos. Quick question. What is your best bag/travel kit for carbon fins and kit for weekend excursion via plane?

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  5 лет назад

      I use the Sportube shown in the video. If I wasn’t taking a speargun I’d just throw my carbon fins in a bag, they are pretty bulletproof

    Great vid brother, try some Cod soup with carrots, potato, yucca, cabbage, plantain, cylantro, onion and coconut MILK not water, once served squeeze half a lime and add a little bit of your choice of hot souce, let me know how that taste. It's a Central American dish from Honduras. You can use any fish. Cheers brother 👍.
