- Being in lockdown had me reminiscing about days gone by and when I started spearfishing. I thought about what I wish someone told me when I first started. I threw this question out to a bunch of spearfishers around the world and also asked what their advice would be for a new diver. This is an absolute doozy, I learnt so much from just making this video and I'm sure you will too. What an amazing global spearfishing community we are all part of.

As a 60 + year old spearfisher a have been diving for 50 years I would say slow down, not in the water but in life. A day on the water is a gift even if it's blowing or dirty take a minute and give thanks. And remember the ocean is not your supermarket be respectful and do not take more than you need.
Hi 👋 I am 65 and still go spearfishing
Matti is next level...” I forced my kids”....😂😂😂😂
sorry to be off topic but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account?
I somehow forgot the password. I love any help you can offer me.
@Quinn Zane Instablaster ;)
haha what a character he is, the way he said it! gold!
where can I follow him btw ? IG page is dead, is he active somewhere on social ?!
You are so underrated, you are better than most youtubers that have 1mil
Agree 100% man
Thanks guys 🙌
Too true
100% for sure he is my favourite to watch
True
Lots of good advice. I am 66 and was a competition spear fisher 51 years ago. .My advice is 1) Go on days that are nice weather. Don't get desperate and get in a marginally dangerous sea. If it looks a bit dodgy don't go. At best it will be unpleasant. For me spearfishing should always be an experience of beauty, wonder and excitement. On rough days do apnoea training in the pool so you are ready when the sea is nice. 2) I wish free diving courses were available 50 years ago. I did a level 2 course in 2020. It taught me a lot about my personal physiology, why relaxing is so important, why hyperventilating is bad and how to rescue a blacked out buddy. I highly recommend a level 2 course for anyone starting out.
Matti is another level, I imagine him going to an all night rave after making this video and I won't have anyone tell me different, legend.
Great vid
He’s the life of the party and a fantastic diver as well. Still holds his own at international competitions.
Simon Tripp a champion, he sold me my first kit. Made sure I didn't get unnecessary stuff and I've been out there non-stop ever since.
Amazing how everyone’s advice is all so different but so helpful! Thanks for having me on mate. Cheers, Strick
Wow...what a humble feeling to see so many master spearos n legends selflessly sharing their tips about spearfishing. Thank you very much Mr Daniel. 🤗
Unreal Mann! Some pearls in there. Thanks for having me on.
Any time!
Love your videos mate.
@@wdmertens Thanks Byron!
I've never commented on any RUclips video before, but I just can't help myself.
Daniel, this is possibly the most helpful and insightful 19min I've ever watched. This is such a valuable piece of info and I thank you.
I only recently discovered your channel, but I straightaway subscribed. You have a calm and humble way about you - no arrogance, just happy to be alive.
And I applaud that. You give spearfishing a good name and you're an inspiration to spearos everywhere.
Keep 'em coming.
Welcome aboard Rudi and thanks for the kind words 🙏🏻
Love your videos man you really have been such an epic inspiration for everything I want my channel to be. Stoked to be a small part of one of your videos and will definitely see you somewhere in the world for a dive!

Thanks man!!! Loved being apart of such a cool video!! So many legends in the clip! Thanks for thinking of me, and I can’t wait to cruise sometime!! Stay safe brother...
Where is Ryan Justin?
I didn't think this video could have been any better until I reached the ending!! 😂😂
Lol
Justin Lee dropping some truth 💣
19 min of aquatic wisdom. Thanks again Dan
That guy from Finland made my day. Great vid compilation Brother . Loved the advice.
I know i pick up some of the most change life dive advices,
1- know how to hunt.
2- clear your ears.
3- take it easy and slowly.
4- buy a good gear is something crusual for your dives.
5- observe and pay attention.
6- have fun.
7- have fun.
Thanks to you all 💙
Rob Allen... What a legend here in South Africa, super awesome gear 👌👍. Nice video!
This was out 4 years ago but wow, how relevant it is still today... and way into the future. Thank you all for doing this! I'm taking my written classes now and getting into the water in the spring (Jan '25 here now).
Decades of knowledge in a short vid. Amazing. Thank you Legends.
I've been spearfishing for more than 20 years and here is my tip for beginners: Invest in a good float/buoy. There are multiple benefits to having this piece of gear. it allows you to ditch your gun if a big fish runs into a hole or off into the deep, or you can rig your spear break-away style if you're expecting big fish. Beyond that, it provides a place to hang your bag or stringer which puts some distance between you and any sharks or other toothy critters, rather than having fish hanging off your belt. A pretty alarming run-in with a very angry moray trying to get a fish that was on my belt is actually what got me to buy my first float.... Probably most importantly, having a nice big float with a flag on it will make it much less likely for you to get smoked by a careless boater (they're out there and you know it). It can also be used as a low-tech training tool. If you know the length of your float line is 75ft, for example, you can clip off the line at 50ft to limit your dives to a depth you know you can handle safely, allowing you to incrementally progress your freediving and minimize risk. finally, if you and your dive buddy happen to drift apart for any reason, you'll have a much easier time tracking eachother down in the chop. If you're not using a dive float yet, you definitely should.
Cheers from BC.
Great advices from all the guys!
Great video full of knowledge from spearos around the world, for spearos around the world!
Thank you Daniel! ✊
Epic epic episode with such legends! Useful advice from every person.
Hope to see you someday and spear with you guys.. Thanks for sharing you advice. I'm from Philippines
That was really fun to watch, happy to be a part of it mate! Cheers!
Thanks for jumping on board! Loved the fuel in the car analogy.
Daniel Mann pleasure, cheers!
Thanks Dan, a beautiful gesture to the spearo community during lockdown. Links are great. Rob Allen's recent stuff is generous too. Thanks guys
18:57 this guy had me cracked up
Lol
@@bigisleboy24 yeah Justin haha. Very true, my fiancé is very easy on the eyes
This video has summed up majority of the advice I have been giving to anyone who wanted to listen to me about spearfishing, I am very grateful to follow or subscribe to your channel just to hear what great spearos around the world have been repeatedly saying on how to improve and I for a fact also wish when I started spearfishing that a dive knife, and booties would be my favorite thing to have in the water!
You have really excelled yourself with this video. I started spear fishing in Queensland in1956 and would have benefitted considerably with the information you have provided. It’s to be hoped that beginners will see it and absorb it en masse as it will contribute to their enjoyment and safety. Keep up the good work !
Daniel. Guys. Wow. You guys make my morning. I had to learn so much on my own. My major thing I would share is learn to hunt at what ever depth you are comfortable.
Thanks again guys. I honestly think spearfishing is the greatest and most underrated sports and also way of making a living.
Thanks for this video mate, just starting on Bali and this kind of information is always necessary from experienced people🙏🏻
One of the best videos you've done I watch all the people in this video to get me through the week till its my turn to get in the water thank you Daniel man...
The spear fishing community is the best community to be apart of......
This video came at a great time for me. Starting out spearfishing here in Darwin Australia 🇦🇺. Will re watch again n be sure to put the advice into practice.
Cheers Daniel, such a great video. Love ya work
You should join the Darwin Dolphins lead by Rick Trippe. A fantastic spearfishing club with loads of knowledge on the area.
As Daniel said find the man Rick Trippe. I grew up there learning from the master himself. He is the OG. The jewie whisperer.
Dan the man! This was amazing, been spearing a few years but still a noob and so many tips in this vid. Thank you! Love your work!
Thankyou for putting this out their.. I've been commercial fishing all my life and I'm 34 and just now starting spearfishing..thankyou for getting this put togeather for us new spearfishers
Thanks from Greece !
Great initiative Dan, this is an epic display of what our sport truly is. Keep it up.
This is like a crossover between all my favorite channels. I thought I was getting an incredible targeted ad in the beginning.
🤣
Brilliant idea and video Dan! Thanks for taking the time to put this together and allowing us to benefit from the respect and relationships you have in the spearo community.
Matti freakin cracks me up bro! One of the best videos out there. Keep up the awesome content man!
So much good advice and even reminders for experienced guys... best of all was Justin's second piece at the end :D
Had me in stitches when he sent it to me 🤣
You made me start spearfishing... thankfull for this and these awesome tips
All the people you got on this man... it’s just awesome. This should totally go viral in our community. Great job keep up the great work
Great job Daniel!
Nobody tell me how crazy Freediving can make you.
Matti Pyykko
You’re awesome
You have united some very seasoned spearos that have shared some golden advice,Welldone to you and all those who have benefited
There are plenty more I had in mind but a video can only be so long.
Each of these pieces of advice is so crucial to easing yourself into being a better spearo. A portion of this is learned and discovered over time through trial and error, this is like a boost start for those just starting out. Like always, great content, hope others take advantage of this compilation of advice from some of the best spearos globally.
As a brand new spearo who hasn't been in the water yet, this was supremely valuable. Bravo.
Another brilliant addition to your library. Love your work Daniel and thanks for sharing👌
Thanks Peter, glad you liked it.
This is the best spearfishing video I’ve seen. You’re a champion!
Best spearfishing video! Thank all of you.
Nice one as usual mr Mann learnt a lot out of that one👍 . Here’s one for ya “I wish I was told never to tell your missus exactly how much you spent on that new Rob Allen roller gun”😂🇦🇺🐟🦀🧜🏻♀️🧜🏻♀️
This is great Daniel! Thanks for taking the time to do this.
This is the best video ever! So precisely! Everyone of them said so important tips!
It’s always cool how Daniel finds new ways to get amazing video up
ahahaha the title to this video should be " Wait For It! watch till the end" hahahahaha
GREAT STUFF - but my advice is golden as well... (PS: Love your videos Daniel!)
What I would have wished I knew was not to buy those ridiculous 2-part diving wetsuits that requires powder or oil to get on! That is so oldschool and today there a great 1-piece full body wetsuits that are so much better and has a nice soft skin inside of them, takes 10 sec to put on absolutely effortless and does not require any oil or powder. A 2 piece wetsuit is such an old technology no one should own that today and put themselves through the misery of putting one of those on
Bruh my guy its because the rubber skin keeps you Warmer and no Water gets in.
Thank you Dan and others for sharing some awesome advice I will take those advice and I know it will help me in my journey 💪🙏🤞👏👏
This video is pure gold. Great Idea Daniel!
Thank you 🙏🏻
It was good to watch a collaboration of wisdom from alot of wicked divers we need more of this a documentry would be awesome
For 100k this is the best editing and quality videos I’ve seen
pretty much sums up my subscription list. very cool idea and video!
Amazing video. Thanks for taking the time to put it together.
Hahaha this was awesome Dan, great job bro. Some diverse ideas and opinions there! Justins right too - bulk sheilas
You can't go outside without a stick anymore can you? For fighting off the women?
Fantastic advice! Thanks for sharing
That's a great bag of information! Thanks again for sharing Daniel!
Great video Daniel! Some advice I wish I got and I’d give others is to go out and practice with good safe and responsible partners, get out as much as you can to practice (while keeping it fun), get good gear by researching, and practice target shooting.
Such a brilliant episode and idea Dan, well done for everyones contributions.
New to your channel, thanks for the advice from everyone! 🐾🐾🐾🖖

Glad you liked it!
I loved this video and learned a lot. Keep them coming Dan.
I really like your advice to dive everywhere. I recently started diving offshore mangrove channels and have found more than I thought possible.
A very helpful info Daniel as I am still starting to go spearfishing. Thank you! More power to you and your channel!
"I forced my children " haha what a legend! great vid
Someone make Matti a youtube channel he will be rich. Me and Sam were dying.
Unfortunately super old school, had to text his brick Nokia to get ahold of him. No WhatsApp or smart phone.
Ahhh man those tidal streams. This is really important. It's unreal how fast that water can get moving... The first time I got stuck, I tried swimming towards shore. I figured my fins could get me there, but the streams kind of pull you to their centre. You're going to go where it's going. The thing is, too, that as you get closer to shallow water in the stream it can often begin to move even faster. As I pushed myself closer to shore I was getting exhausted, and I was only moving faster, and eventually I was pushed into a narrow rocky area and I was seriously flying. I got pushed into all kinds of sub-surface and surfaced rocks, wrapped up my lines in rock and seaweed, and generally got my ass handed to me.
Long story short, don't fight it, but if you need to, don't aim for shallow water! It gets so much worse.
The second stream I got caught in was no big deal. I just gently finned back out to deeper water and once I hit calmer waters, I went to shore and walked (a really long walk) back to my car. Not great either, but so much safer
Thanks Steve, nice info. How do you get out of water if you don’t aim towards shore?
Great vid Dan with great advice from great spearo's .
Luckily the North of Scotland is uber quiet and I have had a couple of sneaky dives. Sea is still a bit cold for life to appear inshore and there is hardly a crab about as yet. However I hope for greater Bass/Mullett numbers moving North this year due to reduced rod and line fishing in England. Looking forward to next vid. Cheers.
One of the best videos ever with great advice
Great video--super good idea--and, Justin Lee is a very funny guy.
Phenomenal diver as well. You can see him in action on Ryan Myers channel.
@@DanielMann Yes, I happened across those last week. He (Justin Lee) and Mark Healey did the same boat dive the other day and had a similarly productive day. Healey said he is intending to put out a lot more spearfishing videos, btw.
Planning on going on my first spearfishing trip once covid settles down and this video was exactly what I needed! Love your videos Dan, and thank you for inspiring me to take up spearfishing!
Glad I could help!
Did you go? How was It?
What a great video Daniel , hopefully we see more videos like this , thanks for the content mate
Brilliant video. Thanks so much for this!
EPIC vid, as always, great content and very entertaining too. As most already pointed out...Matti is crazzzyy.. what a vibe :) So I know we're all still kinda stuck due to the Pandemic but I would really like to see some videos from you in the Portuguese waters, so Hopefully it is in your "to go" list
Hello from Cudjoe Key florida. Great video man . I wish I had better down time . I need to take a class 😩
Thank you! Extremely informative and interesting, especially for s beginner spearo like myself. Thanks for taking the time to compile such excellent information.
this was such a good video Daniel. It’s just a matter of time till you blow up, great work!
