I've been spearfishing for 50 years this year and I've done all my deep spearfishing in Croatia & the shallow spearfishing has been in Airey's Inlet Great Ocean Road, I learn't everything by trial and error and close calls. I must say you've made a really great video. There was nothing around when I was a young man and this is Great. Thanks for sharing information bc that's what it's all about :)
i used to hyperventilate and dive, my reflex usually delayed, usually came up tired,,didnt know it was dangerous. now i practice relaxed breathing and now ive managed to work with my reflex, good to know under water when you're nearing your limit.Feel more relaxed and better than ever hunting. These videos are priceless!.👍👍👍👍👍
Really good video for any up and coming spearos and experienced spearos alike. Can see you're doing your best to prevent tragedies in our sport, thank you!
Wow, great video, super scientific info well explained. Getting back into snorkeling after many years off - have to re-learn & just plain learn a lot - these videos are a great help. Thank you.
Really helpful. American pools, like in Hawaii, in NY state you can not swim underwater in any pool. America the land of regulations, lawsuits and "NO" signs. Yet you can buy high capacity magazine rifles like you are buying a scooter. In NY they do not let you swim if there are no lifeguards, that often force you close to shore. Safety is important. An old school lifeguard in NYC allowed me to swim underwater, as long as it was not static, so he could see me moving, But his boss took over, he retired and she would never allow any underwater activity. Walking apnea feels different. Such a hassle. No freediving classes at all in NY, it is forbidden. America, (not) the land of the free.
I don't think I've ever heard about it being illegal to swim underwater in any pool. I've certainly never seen any laws about that. Maybe pool rules but I don't think its an actual law. can you expand on that a little more? it sounds like a terrible thing
@@xiv_tm431 Where are you located. NY state laws. No breath holding is allowed in public or private pools. Signs that state that is mandatory. Even in saunas and banyas with shallow pools. In America, liability issues create restrictions and regulations for everyone, when some exceptional accident happens
Thats strange over here NYC u can swim underwater like I did but that was long time ago, also seen spearfish under ocean in long island. And there's free diving course in Manhattan u can find it in Google, assuming upstate NY is little bit different laws then?
Hi thanks for the advice! I'm going to use this to claim a record for longest Gurn, with bottom lip covering my nose, I'm currently on 35 seconds but need to beat 1:02. If there is any other advice I'd be greatful! Cheers
Hello thanky you for those explanations ! although if i may have a suggestion just cut off the music it kinda ruins the explanation and is repetitive a lot... Also, happy new year !
HI been watching your vids and i just went for my first breath hold!!! i cant ignore the CO2 urge to breath!!! I try to ignore it but still have to breath when the urge comes!!! Even when i resist! After about 20 seconds!! What can i do? Thanks
Hi Killforbeer, the urge to breathe is natural and definitely not something we want to get rid of or ignore. Having a breath hold for 20 seconds on your first attempt is great, and as you train over time you'll be able to slowly build your time. To make sure you're using the correct techniques and using safe practices we recommend trying out one of our freediving courses below: freediving.com.au/pages/freediving-courses
I can't hold my breath above water at all but I used to swim for my county when I was little and can do one to two lengths of a pool underwater depending on the length of a pool and can hold my breath underwater without moving too quickly for about 5-6 minutes which I think is alright.
Everytime i get to the contractions, instead of my chest or throat contracting, i feel the need to go to the toilet. its so weird, anyone else like this or just me? Its really frustrating.
Yes that pretty much it but don’t hyperventilate Cuase that will get ride of your urge to breathe in away and doesn’t regain your o2 levels as much, if u do a normal breathing then hold you breathe u will get an urge to breathe but juts push through it keep going. U should be fine until 3+ mins (static) before u have to worry about blacking out
Most of the training is get used to the uncomfortable feeling to the urge to breath, without stressing out, imagining a killer wants to kill someone grabing the head of the victim to drown, the timelapse for the victim to black out would be almost the same no matter if the victim never trained breatholds or is a regular breatholder. For an advanced breatholder, that i think would totally diferent, because even without relaxation their bodies had already big changes in hemoglobin levels, how to use and deliver oxygen to the cells and to work more anaerobically. I mean the body changes takes really long time and training
All Commercial and Industrial fishing need to be outlawed. Let the seas and oceans return to their natural state. Allow only manmade lake fish farming to feed the masses. Self-sustainment fishing is okay as long as limits are in place to protect from overfishing.

The most stupid thing I have done is try wim hoff technique in a swimming pool. I was in the baby pool thankfully cos I blacked out. The lifeguards were so useless that my wife who isn't confident in the water had to pull me to the side so lifeguards could bring me out of the pool. She saved my life and was extremely disturbed afterwards. I desperately want to try spearfishing but have no one to go with. Definitely wouldn't do it alone. And I'll be lucky if the missis let's me 😂
