  • Spearfishing with sharks. They are both dangerous and infuriating, but indisputably fascinating to be with in the water. Adreno's Trevor Ketchion retells some of his experiences with tiger sharks, great whites and bull sharks, and shares some tips on how to handle sharks when spearfishing.
    As you would imagine, interactions with sharks when spearfishing can be an interesting experience, as Trevor explains through his encounters with three very different sharks on one exciting day off the sunshine coast. It’s important that you know what to do when placed in these situations so that you, your dive buddies and the shark can all keep hunting.
    Some basic things that we can take away from the tips shared gained through experience from our veteran spearo Trevor are firstly to have a dive buddy with you. This allows you to watch each other’s backs when spearing so you can continue to hunt even in relatively sharkey conditions. Let the shark know that you could be a threat. This means keeping eye contact, staying calm and maybe giving them a solid poke with your spear if they get a little too close for comfort. When diving in dirty water with bull sharks chances are they are going to be a little more boisterous. In this situation, it’s probably best not to stretch your luck too far.
    Thanks to Trevor Ketchion for supplying all GoPro footage and for sharing his insight on such a contentious topic, check out his spearfishing page here: / submergedpsychos

    Aussie, 40 years spearfishing experience. Live in Hawaii - Everything this young man says is true. May I also say, once you lift a fish out of the water on your spear, the sharks leave immediately. Sharks always want your fish, not you. ;) Thank you for providing this information. Well done.

    4:42 Good Explanation! Thank you for sharing that with people. And Yes bull sharks in clear water VS dirty water, very true! Also the tiger charged at you because all your focus was swimming up fast to get air, no eye contact so the tiger saw that and “made its move” and very lucky you looked down at the right moment!!! Great opinions, we need more well rounded minds like yours for sharks!!

      Right? Great knowledge.
      I hate people who pretend sharks are harmless. Of course many are docile with humans, and of course they're not "evil" or something silly like that. But they are hungry predators looking for food. They are "just curious" as some people say, but when their curiosity leads to a bite, it's wise to be careful. And if they think they can safely indulge their curiosity, that's bad news for you.

    The dog analogy is great. When I was travelling out east I happened upon a group of “street dogs” that immediately began growling and coming my way. As soon as they did, my fight or flight response kicked in and I ran towards them with my arms straight out to the sides. All 4 dogs immediately went from aggressive to spooked and they scattered!!!

    • @skycloud4802
      @skycloud4802 Месяц назад

      A lot of aggressive predators get spooked when you stare at them directly in the eyes maintaining the eye contact. It's because in nature, a predator fixes his gaze on prey (a prey would run away), therefore if you hold eye contact, you look like a predator out to hunt yourself.

      Alexandria N. Fall lol ok let’s see how well redirecting goes when u see a 10 ft tiger trying to bite you. At that point you’re not worried about the shark because it’s going to be fine a poke won’t hurt it, you’re biggest concern is your own safety

  • @billgardyne7328
    @billgardyne7328 4 года назад +17

    The explanation on their behaviour in this video is superb.
    I have 50yrs experience in the water as a recreational and professional diver, and the only shark that really scares me is the one you cannot see. They are way overrated as a risk factor except in dirty water which scares the crap out of me due to the prevalence of bull sharks in our area. They are aggressive and unpredictable. The Gulf of Carpentaria, the most hostile environment that I’ve ever worked in, is another scary place. There, research diving is a ‘one-person down to the bottom and back into the boat’ exercise.
    Sharks are (mostly) opportunistic, unlike crocodiles that are ambush predators and just want to eat you. I have studied both and the latter, whilst very cautious, are sneaky and bold and unforgiving. I prefer sharks as they are much more predictable and can generally be scared off.
    A great explanation of shark psychology that I read was:
    Vertical = Prey
    Horizontal = Other
    Generally it’s on the way up that one gets hassled, i.e. when we = food
    Taking out the top predators, whether on land or sea, really stuffs up the food chain and causes the herbivores to take over to the detriment of the whole ecosystem. That is one of the reasons why sharks are protected here in Australia, and why wolves have been reintroduced into some American national parks.
    A few years back we had a young rower in a surf boat competition hit by something in big surf. Being fit he had little fat, and when he drowned he sank and then was carried along the bottom for 20 kms up the coast and into a protected waterway before he floated to the surface. Plenty of sharks along the route and a lot of opportunity for being nibbled on, but no bites. Nope, none.
    Another reason for them wanting to eat us is that they are hungry, maybe because we are taking their food. Bummer that we are in their environment, and we then play by nature’s rules.

    Awesome clip and great knowledge on sharks! I had a run in with a pointer on one dive, luckily there were three of us close together so it came and had a good close look but eventually must have decided we were a threat, just how you described. On another dive I had a dugong slam into me so hard that it broke my speargun and gave me a big bruise. Respect for the ocean creatures!

    This is the first intelligent post about shark lately. So many armchair experts that want to convince you that they're misunderstood matron saints, and others claiming that they're cull-worthy demons. This guy, experienced spear fisherman: you're either a threat, or food; simple. I've been on my share of spear fishing trips as a diver, and am a crappy surfer, and have weighed the odds and risks...I do neither any more, especially in "sharky" conditions.

    Started spearfishing at the age of 8 in the Florida Keys. Dove alone 95% of the time . Only had problems when other divers (primarily scuba divers) were around and they were toting along strings of bloody fish. I always speared fish.....took them straight to the surface.......then straight to the boat (or shore).
    Did have a friend lose her leg to a bull shark in 10 foot of murky water. I compare bull sharks to those pesky dogs that chase you down the street while riding your bike etc. You must be vigilant about constantly surveying what's in your vicinity. Having dove for so long I could usually sense the presence of sharks........but they can come out of nowhere at blistering speeds .

Simply put.....there is always risks when you enter the ocean....no matter how prepared or experienced you are. Of course....if you dive beyond the realm of common sense....you increase the risk of subtracting yourself from the lives of those who love and care for you. If you ever feel uncomfortable about something.....it may be best not to attempt it....at least not until you've gained the experience and knowledge to guide you.

    Interesting, I’ve done a little with sharks in the Coral Sea, spearing fish was my go to, to start the Shark Feed in an area we didn’t normally do it! Once they went into frenzy mode, they’d only stop once everything that could possibly be food was gone! Always arranged it so the reef had our backs and there was normally a minimum of 6, and on scuba. Larger sharks never came in until it was all over and most were back on board. By larger I mean silver tipped whalers, I never really saw them up close. Thanks for sharing and live on.

      dolphin pods will only protect themselves from sharks, generally a shark will not attack a pod because of the threat it faces. This does not mean pods of dolphins keep sharks away though. You can have those dolphins beneath you and a hypothetical shark will still come and check you out.

    Thank you for spreading some good knowledge about sharks. When you dont have hands to investigate what something is, you use your mouth, bigger sharks bigger mouth, even if its just to see what you are. Sharks arent here to hunt us down, the same way a mountain lion doesnt stalk you the moment you see it. Its not their fault its the mechanisms they were given to survive

      I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t invest in an Ocean guardian freedom 7 (shark shield) if you freedive/scuba. Why don’t we see more footage from everyone on this?

    Really great explantions and Videos. I am getting into this sport, cause I sail around the World starting in 2 Month. I was always so afraid just thinking to go into the water. Now I am getting into spearfishing because you took many of my fears away. I will need food and I must relay on fish too. Thanks for all the good you do.

    "shark attacks that are actual attacks are not often recorded as real shark attacks, they're just people who are assumed drowned and missing." Daaaaaaaayum!! I have been watching shark content for decades and you're the very first person to say that. But it DOES make sense.

  • @kmkfiction

    Sharks have been sharing the marine ecosystem with humans and our precursors for millions of years. They know exactly what we are and, as such, the 'mistaken identity' theory of shark attacks is a myth nearly all of the time. They have such finely tuned faculties that they can easily differentiate between humans and pinnipeds. I've dived with White sharks off Guadalupe and can only say that I agree with your theory that you fall into two classes: a competing hunter which poses a potential threat or a prey item. Some might say, "that's impossible" but I think sharks "intuitively know" that spearguns/bang sticks can inflict harm and pointing them at their face/direction. How do Tiger sharks "know" when to arrive at French Frigate Shoals for the Albatross chicks first taking flight? They just "know." Great vid.

      "a competing hunter which poses a potential threat or a prey item."
      i agree, but interestingly, only in some scenarios as far as the potential threat or prey item. It's possible a shark may not charge after you if you're swimming near a boat, even ignoring you at first, for that same reason. The boat may potentially be a floating dead whale, and they see you as another predator on the scene trying to eat it too, and in which case they ignore you, considering you to be an equal predator after food, that food being your boat. That is until they realize its only a boat of course.

      @@DontStopBrent You're not a creationist are you? Humans existed for several millions of years, albeit in slightly different forms. I don't know how long they've been aquatic hunters, but I'd guess at least 1 million years.
