    @Mike Boyde, just want to say that this was the first video I watched when I decided I was going to hold my breath for 4 minutes. After 8 weeks of above-water training I had the opportunity to have an experienced spotter for some in-water training. I hit 4 minutes on the first attempt. This video definitely helped that seed grow, so thank you.

      Same, I remember having a calm surprise when I was about 8 or more, realising that I didn't feel the need to breathe at all and was completely content. I wasn't distressed in the slightest.
      I began to sink to the bottom of the pool, I didn't need to swim and a lot of the air had began to leave my body. I was lethargic but fully aware, I wasn't losing consciousness. I was just sitting under a metre of more water on the pool floor, I took a big exhale and about 20 seconds later or maybe more when I began to feel sleepy, someone yanked me from the water and the shock of air was what actually made me struggle to breathe, I was so disorientated by the noise and light and overwhelming amount of oxygen in the air.
      My heartrate was really low, I then found out I was under there for almost 10 minutes and they thought I drowned, and if they hadn't pulled me out I probably would have drifted off and drowned. That was the second time I neadly died. It was like all my senses were... there, you could tell, and most people panic but I was content, comfortable and that honestly scares me. I don't go swimming often because I need to be consciously aware to go up and breathe, but see I never felt like I was drowning.
      I drown in my dreams almost every night, capsising boat I think. Maybe I drowned like that, always have been terrifed of boats and the ocean. Sucks when you live on one of several small islands and school trips are normally to a few of them (I can swim though)

      Hiruko Winter me too bro but mine was a little more different I was 7 years old i think and i went to the public pool around here then i was just looking down at the bottom of the pool then a realized i was underwater but i didn’t feel the need to breath u know? And then I started to get sleepy ( it was soooooo relaxing omg ) but then i remembered a story that my mom once told me that was like a boy that sleeps in the pool and he drowned and died because no one was there for him so I “wake up” and got out of the pool and idk what happened next i forgot haha and i also idk how many minutes i was there but i think it was more than 10 or 8 min because i lost track of time while i was underwater, it felt like i was meditating in the deep of the ocean, my eyes were closed so everything was black.. it was so relaxing but now that i moved there is no pool here ;-; but for sure i would probably sleep there and have drowned and died because there was no life guards there

    • @BeardOfPower7
      @BeardOfPower7 6 месяцев назад

      @@hobiexplorer4857Breathing exercises. Cardio training. Take a lot of really deep breaths before trying to hold it. Keep working at it and you will get better.
      You can go longer. With one deep breath you should be able to sit calmly and hold it for at least 30 seconds. It's not the lack of oxygen in the blood making you give up. It's the impulse/urge to breathe. You have to endure through it.
      With proper breathing technique before attempting a hold the blood will be enriched with oxygen compared to normal so it'll last for much longer than we're willing to suffer, before literally passing out.

    7:40 meditation is tricky. When focusing on breathe its too easy to accidentally switch to manual breathing which breaks the natural flow during meditation. Another way that is more effective is listening or feeling your heartbeat. Heartbeat is less under your control and after awhile you can actually feel every pulse throughout the entire body which is pretty cool.

    • @armjr7501
      @armjr7501 Год назад +1

      Another way is through contemplation. Ask questions to yourself while you do other techniques. For example ask yourself “what will my next thought be?” Or “who am I?” These silence the thoughts briefly and with practice you will find the way to silence the thoughts for an extended period of time. I have to give credit to Josh X from xfamunity on RUclips for this technique :)

I could do 2 laps before needing to take my first breath. The point being, that maybe what may increase ones time is to have something else to think about while under water, reading, a video, something than than just watching the timer.

      You're holding your breath wrong. You shouldn't be exploding with the air you hold. Fill your lungs up to full, not over-expanded. Also don't put any force or pressure on your internals (like "clenching") as that will increase blood pressure via constriction and cause those headaches.

    The reason why your times in the water were worse can partially be because of the situation itself as you stated but it also has to do with another thing. When you try it on land without holding your nose closed with your fingers, even if you try not to breathe through the nose it happens a bit (and you wont even notice). So on land if you try it, pinching your nose close vs not doing that the times should be worse as well. Not saying you cheated or anything like that, its just a subconsious thing that happens.

    • @McJaews
      @McJaews 6 лет назад +2

      I can pretty casually hold my breath for 2:20 with or without holding my nose. It's quite possible to block your airways without holding your nose with your fingers. I think his drop in times had more to do with changing his environment from sitting upright/lying back to being partially submerged facing down. The water could also cause some amount of mental stress, due to running out of breath while submerged is a lot scarier than while in open air.

    My PB right now is 3m37s (same length as my favourite song, which I was using as reference while holding my breath). I've only rly tried to break my PB by a reasonable margin twice, and before that, it was 3m02s from another one of my favourite songs. I'm happy with what I've got and it's quite meaningful for me since I have pretty severe sunken chest which, according to Google, lowers lung capacity. My current goal would be 4m22s (the next longest song out of my favourites) which is a long ways to go from where I am right now. If I can hit 4m30s then I should be able to keep pushing...

  • @fishermikoaj6578

    You should try hold breath on exhale not inhale, try hyperventilate beforehand.
    This method was invented by Wim Hof, it's quite interesting in own sense.
    After 3rd try I hold my breath for 3:45min, you should really try it.
    I bet after a few more tries you easily pass 5min mark.

      was wondering if anyone else knew about Wim Hof here, though it's tough to say he "invented" it - he just adapted it into his own (bloody amazing) method

    • @marvinm.7634
      @marvinm.7634 6 лет назад +10

      hyperventilation makes it easyer, however you should NEVER do that in the water. normally your co2 builds up faster than your o2 depletes to the point of conciousness loss. therefore the urge to breathe becomes irresistable after a certain point, even though you still have oxygen left. the problem with hyperventilating is, that it depletes your co2 below the normal blood concentration, thus turning your blood too alcaline (alkalosis). when you then start to hold your breath, the co2 takes longer to build up, because you start with less co2 in the blood, therefore the urge to breath gets delayed. the thing with hyperventilation is, that it does NOT increase the amount of oxygen you store in the body. if you hyperventilate too much, it can happen that the urge to breathe sets in so late, that you run out of oxygen before you feel the urge to breathe, with the consequence of passing out. you can imagine why that is not the ideal szenario to undergo in the water.

    • @davidclank64
      @davidclank64 6 лет назад +1

      @@marvinm.7634 If the co2 goes down, isnt it replaced by o2 ? I think hyperventilation doesnt increase the amount of oxygen you can build up in your body but allow you to actually reach it which you never do with regular breathing, thus increasing your o2 amount stored in your body compared to default.
      About passing out with hyperventilating, i though it was when hyperventilating and not when retaining breathing after it, i actually never seen anyone or passed out myself from that so i wouldnt know. But i always though that it was during the hyperventilation phase, because you reached too much o2 in your brain or something.

    Well done..so here's an exercise for breath holds..works well on the hard sand on the beach...when you use energy you use up O2...1-make a line in the sand....2-take a monster breath...3- start walking as you would normally...-4-your legs start to feel like you are running uphill in a marathon...-5-hold out as long as you can, then mark your out of air line...6-wait about 2 minutes, then repeat walking back to the start line line, with another deep breath, but more relaxed and slightly slower...you should be able to get beyond the start line quite easily... repeat the following day..🥸
