Wow this was a lot more useful then I expected.
Some of the things I just learned from this vid.
1. Socks!.. I thought socks were what we all used when we first started to spearfish. My dive socks constantly rip and I think I’ll try using regular socks on my next dive and the best part is.. they’re cheap!
2. Baby Shampoo.. I usually use toothpaste for my masks but baby shampoo sounds better bc it also works as wetsuit lube and I’d rather bring less things when on a dive trip
3. Load Assist.. I don’t use a load assist, I usually tie my bands with a load handle. Ryan is saying if you’re able to load your roller without a load assist then your roller is not powerful enough. I might try a load assist next and see the power difference and I also think it would be better bc I hate tying roller bands with the load handle
4. Neck weight... I never heard of that before and probably won’t use one but it was interesting to learn about.
5. Dyneema shooting line.. I usually use Mono shooting line and I heard that the pound test does affect accuracy but I’m wondering if there’s a difference in accuracy with mono vs dyneema. I don’t shoot big game (I wish I could tho lol) so I don’t worry about the mono line ripping on the reef. What I REALLY liked in that part of the video tho, is how he doesn’t use line clips bc fish can hear it bangin against the gun! Fish are smart af! And what I really found useful was that quick release knot! There’s times when I have to unhook my shooting line from the clip but that knot he used looked waaaaay more quick and useful!
Anyways. Great video. I watch a lot of vids on peoples dive Gear but this one had a lot of useful tips I never heard of 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼💯
I used to dive a bunch with my dad and uncle's growing up, tho I wasnt really great at it. I'd shoot fish mostly with 3-prong but had no real hunting tactics. When I started working I'd only dive a few times a year if that. I remember seeing one of your vids thanks to youtubes suggestion and immediately wanted to get back in the water. At first I honestly thought "why are these locals taking this cocky haole to all these killer spots." Then I realized how skilled and passionate you actually are. Your criticism isn't to belittle anyone, it's to help people around you become better and quite honestly I've become a better diver just by subscribing to your channel and watching your videos. I'm grateful for your content and RUclips presence for not only inspiring me to go back to my roots, but also helping me grow in the right direction to bear fruit. "Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime." Keep up the good work my friend, you've got my support. If you're ever on Oahu let's dive! 🤙
Just want to say, awesome comment brother. Love the humility and honesty, respect ✊🏽 happy diving
Or be like me, "Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, that fucka better be lucky cuz bumbye he going home hungry errrry time."
@@newvocabulary guarantee catch at the store
@@rawbeejay every time I go sack and save I catch something :)
Man I’m doing exactly that. I used to dive growing up and now that I’m always working I only night dive a few times a year. I just bought all new gear today and I can’t wait to get back to my roots.
Instructor trainer myself hundreds of clients, almost 12 years experience and I never heard it better! As always practice trumps theory. Keep it up man 💪🏽
I grew up on Kauai and fished choke but never learned how to dive properly. Videos like this and the upcoming breath video mentioned are tremendous for me! Anything that teaches level zero, beginner basics are very much appreciated. Much mahalos Ryan, Sam and J Lee! Please keep em coming!
This video was very helpful. I’m just starting up again and everything you said in this video explained all my problems and my new answer
Of all the years I’ve dove in the past, this by far was the most educational tips for those whom take their spear fishing to heart. Mahalo for sharing your passion 😎🌈🌺🤙🏽
Thanks for all the tips you share Ryan! I started spear fishing a few months ago and with your tips I’ve started landing fish every time I go out. I’m from So Cal and have been landing some nice fish by using some techniques you’ve shared. Today I have lunch that I caught yesterday. Much love brotha!!👊🏼🤙🏼
That’s awesome Nathan super stoked for you!!!
Such a great video. Love watching you shoot fish but these videos on how to set up before even going in the water are awesome. I will probably watch this one a few times to start developing my own spear bag. Thanks for this great content.
No worries Cliff happy to help and thanks for watching!!
I LOVED that always wanted to know what you used. THANKS!!!
Wassup Ryan! Im a young diver who started in the pandemic i enjoy ur videos and tips they have help me a lot! 🤙🏾
Happy to help man stick with it and you will get better and better!!!
I am beginning with spearfishing and I am buying my stuff right now. That's why this Video is perfect for me right now. Thank you very much. Go on with filming Videos. :)
No worries Martin stokes I could help you out!!!
Very informative. Mahalo for explaining the difference between SCUBA and free diving equipment. 🤙🏻
2-3 day ago I found your channel after falling down a YT rabbit hole and I've now watched all your videos. Great stuff! Subbed! Love the cooking segment, as I'm a foodie. Never been diving, even when I lived in FL and was at the beach almost every day, but looks like a lot of fun. Wish I tried it when I was younger.
Just moved to Big I from Maui recently. Looking to get dive gear and I thought about looking through your channel to see if you have done a gear video, and wala, you just posted one 5 hrs ago. Great timing. Thank you for sharing!
You're my favorite spearfishing youtube channel! Love learning from your videos
Thanks guys! Happy to help!
Awesome, I’ve been waiting for this one a long time
Great tips Ryan! I really dig the knotted shooting line... Did you know that you can splice dyneema shooting line? It's pretty easy, but does take a bit of practice. It would cut down a tad on the drag in the water. I think you've convinced me to switch from mono.
When I'm a diver who uses my boarshorts when I dive because I'm broke teenager 🤠🤙🏾
Gotta use whatever you’ve got!
Same braddah man
love you content bro! cant wait for that breath hold vid 🤙🏽
I get in and out on the rocks a lot. I always thought that being able to attach your weight belt to the float before you get out would be good if the swell picks up.
thank you,. I've been using my snorkel wrong all this time.. LOL Next time I'll try your way...
Awesome Video. This will really helped with my upcoming move to Hilo. Keep up the good videos Ryan!!!!
Happy to help and good luck in Hilo!!!
All Ryan's videos are awesome, very informative. I learned a few things from this channel that I can utilize when I get back to the islands. 🤙💯🤙
Thanks man stoked your spear arrived too man get out there and kill some Carp and striper with it!
@@RyanMyersExpeditions Im about to just jump on a plane and head back to Hawaii. Highly interested in breaking quarantine rules to use the spear lol.
Thank you for clarifying how to use shampoo. Didn't know I was doing it wrong
Thanks for sharing. Im making a belt kui today from wire.
Sam is a fan favorite she needs a short clip in every video
Bro... I don't know but those creekkoolers are sold after you talk about them, those things are just brilliant!!!
Creek Cooler🤔thanks for that🤙🏽, awesome vid yet again!
Sold out on everything! tell those CKooler boys to stock some product
Thanks dude! Awesome video.
honestly i have been comparing his style of diving and staying at the bottom to what i see other divers here in barbados doing and realised that his style simply does not work here most fish in these areas are super skittish and no matter how quite you are they almost never come in unless they are of a bigger more confident variety of fish which is scarce as is, even the way they catch octopus over there by simply poking it with the spear head in barbados that octopus would never come out and will actually hide deeper in its whole . To add to that almost noone here dives in full wetsuits most people cant afford it but yet many still do super well, so in conclusion i have determined that where you and how the animals have adapted to being hunted plays a huge role in how you catch them therefore not advise is universal however it still is a very informative video
some good tips Ryan thanks!
That fishermans knot trick is mind blowing. I had no idea... 🤔
Good luck getting a dive flag into that. Had to bore the hole a little to get anything remotely close to fitting in it. Also secured a 1lb weight to the bottom using zip ties to keep the float and flag upwards esp in current/waves
Super informative!!
Great review Ryan!thanx mate
Thx for the gear breakdown.
No worries Daniel happy to help!
If your diving in Hawaii(not sure if there else where) use nal paka leaves before every dive. There on most beaches here. Grab a few leaves and scrub your masks then rinse and should be good to go with no fog for the dive 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Great tips there. Thank you
Agree on the shaving... I always shave when I go diving
I’ll have to try out the baby shampoo on the mask. I use some fog gel and hock a lugi and do a quick dip then put it on. That works for me. We don’t have freediving shops here in Washington. Great video Ryan!
Try out the baby shampoo Tim it really is the best.
Great vid. Can’t wait till the breath hold vid.🤙🏽
It’s coming soon I promise. Thanks so much for watching!!!
Fantastic video Ry!
Awesome tips bro ....I did notice the kui in your videos I thought that was brilliant ...I grabbed some wire from Home Depot...thanks Ryan great video...btw from your early videos to present videos they’ve really matured really well (GREAT TO WATCH) please don’t stop Byfar one of my favorite channels
Thanks peter really appreciate that. I’m not going anywhere we are just getting started. Stoked you picked up the wire kui works pretty great!
legend mate - you are a great teacher!!
Love your videos keep it up man may come after corona season to your area
This was awesome.
Awesome video! Bro I’ve been diving over 30yrs and heard of baby shampoo for mask and I get 4kids so had plenty stock but Neva did use it! Tried tooth paste but kept loosing the tubes in the boat, wasted choke $ on Hawaiian gold defogger! Gotta go back to the roots! Thanks for the tips. Ready for the next episode! Lol
🤙Aloha
Super cool thank you!!! discount code saved!!
Video was fire. Well done bruh.
Best part of this video was the zip ties on the snorkel. Simplicity brilliant 👏👌 if you dive you know you alway lose the damn clip. And that can kill a dive and breath ups.
Yesssszz its hereee💯
Hope it doesn’t disappoint!
Eight years ago I went to the dive shop and tried on two masks. Im still using the mask and just now upgraded to carbon fins. If you buy good stuff you only pay once
I saw you on JOOGSQUADs video, I checked out your channel, and now I want to start spearfishing...
Thanks Puma gotta try it man it’s an epic sport!!!
Love the vids🔥🔥
Thanks so much!!!
naupaka leaves the best antifog ever. when done correctly lasts me no matter how long I dive 5+ hrs. the grow in the mountains and by the beaches, free and eco friendly lol.
Mahalos for showing what your belt kui is🤙🏼
Can’t wait for the next vid some fishes need to be slayed 😈 also don’t forget to bring braddah Justin and samagram haha aloha and stay blessed 🤙🤙
Another great video🔥. One question I have is how did you get your creek cooler to Hawaii? On their website it says they don’t ship to Hawaii.
Really wanna get a CreekCooler!!! Awesome rig.
Thanks bro!
No worries Andrew thanks for watching!
Gold!
Awesome vid! Did you modify the O-ring on your creek cooler? I have one and it’s difficult to close with the rubber stock ring
great videos for inspiration and great tips. how do you tie the dyneema to the spear shaft ? bowline , half hitches with some shrink wrap to keep em smooth, also what about some chaffing gear on the spear side or would that be too much ? why is it that my scuba mask seals over my "stach" but having a hard time finding a low volume mask to seal. guess I will keep looking.
I look forward to your breath hold video could you add Finning techniques?! I live in a landlocked state and don't know anybody who's doing freshwater diving so I'm literally learning everything from trial and error or RUclips
That was awesome, mahalo!!!
I'm on a little island in Indonesia, and kinda broke so here's how i've done it cheap:
i use cheap leggings, and a cycling long sleeve vest from the thrift store.
For gloves i use cheap nylon gardening gloves.
For stringer you can use a 10cm nail attached to some cheap line. This doubles up as knife to brain fish
For a shaft, you can take one to a mechanic and he can make/copy an extra one by grinding a steel rod (7mm/150cm)
Hi Ryan.Would like to ask you about your guns, the 100 and 120.
Which setup you were using,i mean what was the load length and what was your bands length and width.
Same for the shaft.
Great videos,love to watch them.
Love the channel. My spearfishing has improved dramatically thanks to your tips and videos. Keep em coming. Happy to report that I snagged possibly the last Creekkooler 15 quart pup on the planet (which arrived today ... Hartlyn) and I am sure it is the answer to all my float problems and, ideal for Wellington NZ. Unfortunately I think I 'donated' a small fortune to the peoples republic of communist china before getting my bank card blocked for visiting multiple dodgy websites in pursuit of any Creekkooler :D
That’s amazing. Can’t believe the world ran out of them right as I started to promote them. Oh well stoked you found one and happy I could help out your hunting a bit!
What's up, from Denmark. Great vid! Super informative. I've seen you use Head Hunter Pole spears in some of your vids. Care to comment on when and why you prefer to use one over a gun, the benefits of a roller pole, and how one can become a more proficient pole spearer?
Big fan of headhunter pole spears but I usually only use them in the Bahamas or hunting for a pole spear record. Gotta use em to get good with em. Practice is everything.
Hey Ryan, What type and size dyneema is your shooting line? Thanks for all the great info!
Love your vids you should come to Tahiti soon
the smell of Baby shampoo is the secret to bringing fish closer.😂😂😂
thank you
I didn't know you can use dyneema line as your spear line. My swivel always hits my gun. Haha going to try your technique. Thank you @Ryan Mayers.
@Rayan Myers*
Keep making vids love you
Ryan, what’s your opinion on teak spearguns? Trying to decide between a wood gun vs a Rob Allen roller
So Ryan, I have an inverted roller and definately understand its advantages. However its the only roller I ever shot (and its insane) but the question is-if a single roller shoots like a two band gun.... Why not just shoot a well set up two band gun? Obviously you like it and it definitely definitely works for you. Just curious
Missed a very important topic... under your wetsuit do you, A: Free ball it. B: Wear those diving tighty whities. Or C: wear surf shorts. How does one properly care for the family jewels like a world champion?
Naked in a lubed up rubber suit is the only way to go. Not even a question.
Every thing u said is so true....
Thanks Kevin happy to help!!!
what are your personal opinions on the carbon fins? Moanas vs Cetma vs Florida freedivers
Breathe holds an equalization technique would be cherry 🤙🏼
Working on it!!! Soon thanks for watching!
I don't know if decathlon exists in America too but they sell a neck weight with quick release (35€ 1,5kg)
Is the shooting line dyneema any special type? Or can you just use any dyneema?
What are you using to film this? The resolution is awesome
Try and use the quick release knot for your neck weight...
Awsome!
And also could you recommend or tell me some good 3 prong spears you would use?
Please Ryan talk about different angles on carbon fins and which you choose for your style of spearfishing , thanks
More angle is better for surface. Less angle is better for proper form while descending. Depends on what you value. That’s about all I know.,
@@RyanMyersExpeditions thank you Ryan excellent
I’ve been trying to get that cooler since the first time you showed it but can’t find available anywhere. What’s your code for
Hello ryan did you convert your guns into roller or you bought it like that? i have a rob allen tuna 1200 and was thingking in making it a roller
Hey Ryan! Where do you keep that load assist? Those things seem like redundancy to me because it's one more thing to carry around and get stuck in a rock/coral. Greetings from the Azores mate!
Do you keep ice in the cooler as you dive? I feel like it would turn into an oven in the hot sun. Just wondering as I just bought one after seeing you knifejaw vid.
Great video Ryan, I never saw the neck weight before, but from diving in the Med for years I picked up using ankle weights to keep my fins down while moving on the surface and at the bottom to go in aspetto or aguato mode faster and stealthier. Plus, I know this is a controversial subject, but isn’t the whole purpose of the reel to ditch the dive line and float?
Ya I’ve heard ankle weights for the California kelp guys to be a bit quieter but not the med guys? Maybe the super shallow med guys. Ya I hate the dive line but unfortunately I do 99% shore dives out here in Hawaii.
Ryan, did you have any trouble with closing/locking the CreekKooler lid? I got one, and the lid will not lock into place.
So I heard you mention “it’s difficult to dive deep with a thicker wetsuit.” So if I’m using a 3.5mm and say 8lbs, is it going to be more difficult to reach those deeper depths than if I had a thinner suit and less weight?
love da videos ryan ! ur roller gun rubber have 16 mil bands ?
What kind of polespear do you have?
I had my shooting line switched to dynema after watching your gear video but had some questions.
1. How many wraps is your shooting line with this set up? It looks like in the video that it’s one wrap with a loop at the end to attach your reel line to.
2. I’ve never had a reel and was wondering if your drag is set tightened down or open to free spool?
He has a double wrap and you want to tighten your reel with your finger till it’s just a little bit tight so that if you shoot a big fish it can run but won’t get stuck on the bottom
what are your thoughts on wood guns and what models would you recommend? riffe euro? thanks
Fire wood.
More spearfishing tips pls :)
