I really hate Nomura's way of storytelling or way of adding something to a franchise's story.
I liked what he did with KH2, despite what some people said, I really loved Roxas' intro up until Sora leaves for Twilight Town and it legitimately made me cry.
That's the type of storytelling that I want, and we could've gotten something like that in KH3, maybe not as emotionally driven, but something that cumulated from all the games before, IMAGINE IF ALL THE CHARACTERS YOU'VE HELPED FROM DIFFERENT WORLDS BEFORE, HELPED OUT WITH THE HEARTLESS!!!! But no, it's just Yen Sid 😞.

I would LOVE for them to remake Union X and Dark Roads into full games with actual animated and voice acted cutscenes. The stories are just to important to the overarching narrative to be inaccessible. Plus it’s hard to take the darker moments seriously when it’s just adorable 2D chibi characters murdering each other lol

How cool would it be to create our own avatar just like the mobile game except see them in a full 3D environment. Like, how epic would the keyblade graveyard segment be on a ps4/ps5 or better yet PC. That shit was a full boss gauntlet vs all the other unions... Nowadays they might even be able to use AI to pronounce the Player's name. That would be so cutting edge and something that hasn't been done yet, I feel like they could do it though; KH UX was so personal to a lot of people how special would that be.

I'd say the story isn't complicated, just needlessly convoluted. The games being on multiple platforms didn't help. Really, the problem is how Nomura wants everything to be too connected. KHX is a great example of this. There was no need for that story to have a great significance on the current story. It should have just given context to the first keyblade war and why the worlds are separated. It doesn't help that time is wonky in this series and that we can't really say when things happen.

It's frustrating watching Square intentionally disregard the console market all for the sake of that mobile game money, but it's an enormous slap in the face to fans like myself, those who've stuck it out for years while trying to keep up across handhelds & home consoles. If they've no intention of doing better, I've already got a fall-back, the Xeno series. Between all the world building, the characters & the sci-fi elements, there's so much to offer that I honestly think most people are sleeping on its potential. The Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy has been filling that KH-sized hole in my heart for some time, and I'd even place Shulk far above Sora as a character from a writing standpoint, especially after the events of Future Redeemed.

As a Nintendo fan who prefers there games to be on Nintendo even with all the cut corners to make it work? This is a bigger slap to the face than just getting a bad port at least a bad port had some effort put into it. Not only can I not really play the game on my Switch, I have to be connected to the internet to play it, and if the server goes down, I'll no longer be able to play it. I have a PlayStation and an Xbox so I'm not that mad about it but again, I'd rather have my games ON Nintendo. Why are we advocating for Square to keep churning their wheels and put out garbage after garbage in an attempt to wring its fandom from all of their hard earned money? Let's be honest here -- Square barely cares about the story or its fandom when it comes to KH. Suggesting that they remake the KH mobile games but into console games at likely $70 a pop is just another way for them to exploit their fans so they have a complete picture going into another mainline KH title, that quite honestly, feels like is staying way past its welcome.

I think the issue is that we are entering a new era of kingdom hearts, leaving the Xehanort saga behind.
We were able to connect every thing together because we were at the end of the saga. Our new saga means new games to be scattered around just like the start of the kingdom hearts journey (both in the game canon and the player). Now that we are entering a new era we are going to start over again from the beginning, until we reach the end of the lost master saga, where we will definitely get another 3.5 remix or something.

This is what made me worry after the release of so many titles. I was born in 2002, the year KH1 was released, and I played throughout all elementary school, along with KH2. I fell IN LOVE with the franchise, there wasn't a day I didn't imagine myself fighting along Sora and his friend. I truly loved it.
Now I'm 20, and last year I finally got a PS4. With it, I bought KH All In One. I replayed through the first, Chain of Memories, the second, BBS (one of my absolute favorites) and I fell in love all over again. Until... I reached 2.8
Don't get me wrong, it was so fun playing as Aqua and playing DDD for the first time ever. But... things were starting to feel a little bit too intricate. When I played the third, I was so hyped. I remember waiting, like, a total of 10 years for this bad boy to come out. Everybody was on the edge of their seat every time KH3 was mentioned. I remember spending days on Facebook groups and forums hoping to see if someone got new info, so it was so weird being able to play it!! Although... I was let down.
    The graphics? Amazing. Gameplay? Amazing.
    Story?
    Well...
It infuriated me how long it took for the game to go over the story. Everything happens within the last hour of gameplay, in the last fricking world.
I was so weirded out already that [SPOILERS] Marluxia, Larxene, Vexen were still alive? I saw them and was like "...what?".
Once in the Keyblade Graveyard, when dead people came back to life all over the place (looking at you, Xion and Roxas), I started playing with a constant "Are you serious?" expression. I lost all interest in seeing what would come up later, especially because every bad guy got his happy ending for some reason? But I didn't lose hope... yet. I thought, hey, maybe they're going to conclude the game in a nice way, at least.
Master Eraqus randomly appears, says one or two things and Xehanort, THE MAIN ANTAGONIST SINCE EVERY PREVIOUS TITLE, was like, 'ok cool. take the x-blade sora, im outta here"
    ???????????????
I was so let down. I didn't bother buying the DLC, as my I got told that things that went unexplained in the game are not fully talked about in the DLC either. Plus, the DLC hints at stuff for KH4 without any explanation, AGAIN
I LOVE intricate stories, but making it purposefully intricate and confusing just because you like the Internet calling your game "intricate" and "difficult" makes it lose its charm. I was hyped when I saw KH4. For like, a day. Then I completely lost interest. If they don't fix this thing, I'm not going to bother buying KH4. And this is coming from a fan since 2008. To me, what's canon involves KH1, CoM, KH2, Days, Coded (could have neglected this one but oh well), BBS and that's it. Anything later than that is just utterly useless, in my opinion. Except for X, of course!
Sorry for the venting, but I wanted to appreciate your video by giving out my experience. Keep up the good work, man! May the keyblade lead your way :)

That's about where I am, too. The story after BBS is just completely tanked. It's clear that the story has no competent editors anymore, so all we get is that stream of consciousness word vomit that is Nomura's creative process without anyone who can actually take the pieces and put them together. Yeah 3 ruined the series for me. It should have been a proper and beautiful ending to the series but it leaves more questions than answers after a decade wait. And leaves much to be desired in terms of content in the game itself. No final fantasy, scala ad caelum ultimately falls flat as a final world offering no exploration. Square offered up many excuses for this game after its release. The simple fact is they spent too much time on the disney stuff and didnt want to do any more work on stuff fans actually cared about.

I feel like Disneys Involment was huge for KH3. In other titles it felt like the disney stories revolved around the kh setting. But with 3 it felt the opposite. No final fantasy characters, the plot was irrelevant because the original disney stories needed to shine and not be altered in the slightest. The transformations were wack, combos were weightless and not as flashy, rikus keyblade was awful, difficulty did not exist when the game first released, and throwing all the characters you actually were interested in last minute was lame.

Yeah it might be because the Disney worlds became less and less relevant. In KH1 the worlds felt tied to the main plot. Not really much in 2 and absolutely not at all in 3.
KH3 literally no middle section. It hardly even has a beginning.. they waste time in Disney worlds then BAM.. all the terribly written nomura anime stuff happens at the end.
Or maybe because between KH1 and 2.. it only like one game in between them. Yeah it had the ro as story too.. but honestly you don’t need to know it when going into KH2.. the game stands perfectly fine if you go in knowing nothing of Roxas.

And spreading crucial parts of the story across multiple platforms is still one of the weirdest and counterintuitive decisions I've ever seen. To quote the AVGN: "What were they thinking?"

I didn't really like most of the worlds either, except for exploring them, but story wise they added nothing to the plot and it was obvious Disney was pushing hard to advertise newer titles instead of the classic titles that actually made people fall in love with the series in the first place. I mean, they even got the original voice actors for Alice/Wendy and Piglet to come out of retirement.

It would help introduce these people to essential characters from the X saga before KH4 releases without having to develop an entire game for it. Plus, UX objectively has the best storytelling in the series so far, and seeing some of the best cutscenes animated properly and voiced for the first time would be a magical expirience for the people who have seen UX all the way through.

Yeah when kh 4 trailer came out with Strelitzia. A lot of people were asking who she was and I basically answered everyone I saw telling a synopsis of who she was. 😅
Nomura kinda hinted that he wants the kh community to basically explain it all to each other as he believes it brings people together, he mentioned in one of the interviews. But I'm sure when enough time passes, union x etc, will get it's own theater preview in a future final mix compilation.
So it really feels like it's on purpose to bring future hype with the kh community wanting to tell the lore. Basically one big marketing strategy, just a weird word of mouth one. (Not saying it's a good method btw. I'm starting to get tired keeping up with it all myself, and I played every kh game.)

This word to mouth strategy sounds good cause it would allow story to focus more on bizarre vibes than overexplaining stuff which doesn't need explaining. People seem to overestimate how much knowing every part of the story really affects to experience.
KH's storytelling kinda suffers from its tendency to focus on some unnecessary expositions and histories rather than just create vibing narrative and characterization.

Most of the game was just going over what we knew, barely anything was new and there wasn't really much of a direction until the end. I always say Kairi should have been the focus of kh 3 since she has the least development and screen time. We already know basically everything about Sora, his stuff could have been relegated to cutscenes.
And it looks like Nomura will likely be focusing on Sora again in kh 4. So I'll probably pass on the game and watch let's plays for the lore.

I don’t think KH4 is going to be the next in the series to come out, it’ll be Missing Link and probably one more legit side-game (or maybe an actual remaster of Days and/or Re:Coded) before KH4 so they can build up the hype. Nomura also said he wanted to dive back into the FF side of things, so Sora may be the main focus but the tone could shift dramatically. Just my 2¢ though.

like final fantasy for exemple, SE tried to reinvent combat on every single mainline game since FF4, and this creates inconsistency, from all the 1 to 15, there are 3 or 4 that are really good, they even did that on direct sequels like X-2, XIII-2 and LR
now back to kingdom hearts, its no different, KH1 was nice, KH2 is ahead of its time, and KH3 still feels better than 99% of action rpgs out there, but everything in between these games sucks, not because they are bad, but because they could have been much better on actual decent hardware and kept the essential combat mechanics

I question why Kingdom Hearts is like this. Twice now, they've effectively made the mainline story... functionally pointless. The actual important characters of the Xehanort arc were from Birth By Sleep on the side consoles. The actual important characters of KH4 and beyond are... from the mobile games, because that's actually where the important events that alter all of canon are happening. Hell we're playing Sora when *Ventus* looks like the second most important and powerful character in the whole series.
After a point, if the actual important setup and events and intrigue are happening in the side material... then it's the *main* material-the console games, the numbered titles-that starts feeling like what you should just watch on RUclips and read on a wiki.

Also having to kinda rush into KH 4 after us just getting 3 not that long ago without any background knowledge of union x would throw a lot of people off considering not many people openly played the mobile games or felt interested to do so. Still, I'm super curious if that's how they'll try and get everyone caught up if 'Melody of Memory' wasn't already their attempt at that..?

The annoying thing for me is how every game has a new gimmick.
I hated Union Cross because of the gatcha mechanic, upgrading badges etc was annoying and not fun for me, so I missed major plot events because it felt like a chore instead of a game
I skipped chain of memories when it first released because as a kid i thought "oh, it's basically KH1 again but with a stupid card system now"
And melody of memories has done the exact same thing by being a rhythm game 😅 just give me consistency in gameplay

In defense of kh chain of memories, kh1 gameplay would NOT work on the Gameboy advance, and, imo, it's actually pretty fun on GBA.

@Cam Harkness They didn't help themselves by making it seem so much like the first game though, to my young mind it just felt like a worse version of kh1, so I never got through enough of it for the story to start coming out.
Obviously as I've got older, I realised and went back to it

@@sharrzeor7478 oh yeah, no definitely I agree there, they really should have done a better job making it stand in its own light, especially in marketing, especially since hand held ports, even at the time, had special tag lines like that.
I was just defending the card mechanic's existence.

@Cam Harkness that's valid, I just personally didn't like the card system, I can see its appeal, it just isn't for me

I think the main issue with KH pre-KH3 was that Square had no confidence in it and prioritized Final Fantasy. In a way to keep KH alive they kept releasing side gamesm But low budget, less risky side games on handheld/mobile devices that were easier to make.
Even KH3 seemed like it had less time and energy permitted, as some aspects were a bit wonky, like the audio, character models and cutscenes, but i also recognize they switched the game engine partially into development, so maybe that attributed to it as well.
KH3 pulled in some serious sales numbers, so im not surprised that Square is finally taking it more seriously. The KH4 trailer releasing so soon after KH3 and looking beautiful is proof enough of that.

The problem is not only the financial aspect of all those games, it's also the story. They unnecessarily complicated it with every game

I feel bad for saying this but I completely forgot all about Missing Link. There was a point where i kept watching the trailer, listen to its then wait for the updates of the beta trailer but since then....utter darkness of how progress with Missing Link is going. I hope its development is going well but it doesnt feel like it. I would love to see a trailer during the summer for Missing Link and KH4 so we can know what they are looking like

I used to love KH. It's something special, that brought relationships to my life i still cherish. After KH3 i just can't. I was expecting the finale. Something to just close that childhood open wound. They, instead, kept up with their greed. Im nbot exited about the series anymore. They are plain, greedy, and try so hard to appear complex and deep. You could fool me as a kid, but no longer. Im just going to cherish my memories about it and move on. Nomura is a disgrace for the industry.
