- Did you dream about becoming an astronaut when you were little? Alyssa Carson did. Ever since she was a little girl, she has had her heart set on the stars. Not only did she dream of it, but she has also actually achieved it! In this TEDxTalk, she shares her journey from a childhood dream of becoming an astronaut to quite a realistic chance of being one of the first people on Mars. At just 18 years old, Alyssa is the first person to attend all three NASA Space Camps in the world, as well as to complete the NASA Passport program, visiting all 14 NASA Visitor Centers stretching across 9 states. Moreover, she is the youngest to be accepted and graduate the Advanced Possum Academy, officially making her certified to go to space and an astronaut trainee in 2016. Also, she is one of seven ambassadors representing Mars One, a mission to establish a human colony on Mars in 2030. To find out more about Alyssa, follow her on Instagram / nasablueberry or visit her website nasablueberry.com/ This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Your parents are probably right in this case. At that age your far from getting official training by NASA. This is girl is not in any way working for or being trained by NASA. All she's done is gone to a few space camps(not in any way supported by NASA) and her father generated all this buzz for her and it's working. So many people are looking up to her it's sad.

If you cannot become an astronaut in this way, you will have many different ways to become an astronaut, such as joining the air force and then apply to astronauts or become a space engineer, then apply to astronauts, etc. If you don't have enough money, become an astronaut in your own way, don't give up your dream too easily. In life, if you have a dream, find ways to do it. Make sure that by the time you are about to die, you may find that you have no regrets about the day you lived.

Why doesn't she mentioned that she had the full support of a good parenting and that she had the time since she didn't have to work another job while putting the hard work for her dream... Let's be realistic. Not everyone has the same opportunities for their dream or the money...
Don’t understand all the hate. A lot of people had the same resources and opportunities she had and non of them accomplished what she did. She was lucky to have resources, but she made the decision to work hard towards that goal. Not anyone can do what she did, even with all the money of the world.
@@BarDownBoys Why all the hate towards a girl trying to pursue her dream?
@@BarDownBoys she's an inspiration and is doing something different that's why as soon as you hear of her you're like wow I didn't know that was possible. And she's not the one who is going around saying this stuff, Tedtalk and production companies reach out To her to make a story about it and she explains her story!
@@karinamatos4253 he doesn't hate her he is just trying to Express his opinion and saying that she had much better opportunities than other people and I personally believe that more experienced people must be the first people to got mars
@@karinamatos4253 it's not hate, it's just dissatisfaction...tbh, I also have that, she didn't earned it, she had the privilege to chose, many people( including me) can't make that choice that early in our lives because we have our own financial struggle....and the thing is, she doesn't simply will become an astronaut, she wants to be the FIRST person on Mars, that's why there's hate, there are a LOT of other people too who would want that and willing to give up the same or even more than her....they just need their chance
Maybe I'm missing on something, but how can you have a vision of what you want to be when you're 3 years old?
You can just tell that you wanna do something badly enough. Anything can trigger it. People do projects they think are cool all the time. But it’s rare that you find that one thing that hooks your mind and won’t let go no matter what. That cartoon sparked it for her. It is what it is. I can relate because I watched this one episode of Kim Possible (a cartoon) when I was 10, and it hooked me on the idea of personal vehicles to space. And I didn’t know electrical engineering, or accounting, profit or loss, opportunity cost, business model validation, physics, nothing. I just knew that I wanted to do aerospace engineering. If ever you’re fortunate enough to have your brain sparked so you can say, “this is exactly what I wanna do for the rest of my life” without any justification, you’ll know what her 3 year old mind experienced. I think her parents are NASA engineers or something, so they pushed her to act on this 3 year old vision she had, but that would be all for nothing if she didn’t believe it in her own capacity. I wish you the best, my friend. May you find that thing (or things) you’d do forever 🙏🏽
Float Circuit The point that I was trying to make is that it is very unlikely that this could happen to a 3 year old person. At that age kids are not really able to comprehend those things... they start feeding themselves, dressing themselves... all the basic things, you know, but not deciding what they want to be :) Most people don’t even remember themselves at that age.
I do have a passion and I am extremely happy I found it.
There are seven and a half billion people on this planet. Of course there’s bound to be at least one…
@@diananikitaeva9230 you are right. they say bs like that to make more exciting of a story, it is a total lie. around 7 maybe but not three, not even with ridiculously high iq

The youngest astronaut is 25 because you need a propper education to be an astronaut, you need practice but you also need to know the technical side, and that requires a university degree and time.

Pizza Dude12 good point. I was not considering Russian cosmonauts . I thought they had quite different selection process
the mars mission is set for the early 30’s, so alyssa and other astronauts in training will have time to earn degrees.
@@dontsubtome817 1. They will almost cetainly not achieve the early 2030s goal and it's more likely going to be 2040s.
2. They aren't going to be selecting kids to be the first ones going to Mars. The ones going are older and will have already been on multiple missions to the ISS. There's a reason Doug Hurley was selected.
Proud of you, Alyssa Carson, and wishing you all the very best. I hope you'll be back from Mars
Τhere is no coming back 😢
To everyone saying how she achieved so much at such a young age, it was her dad that supported her dream from the start. You always need someone to push you from the back, and who else better than your parents? She is brilliant!
Yea her parents paid for everything
No, its called being spoilt and rich.
@@north-seascoundrel7328 yup
mudit 09 supported her with money instead of morale bases
@@randombaguette Huh? Whats wrong with her morals? And @britannia432 how dafq is she spoilt? She is living her dream. Obviously it requires money, but also a whole lot of constant motivation.
It’s a great achievement, and I fully respect her for the work she has put in, but its only ignorance if we deny the fact that although she did put in plenty of hard work, someone with less money, less opportunities would have to put in double the amount she did. I’m not saying she had it easy, but some others have it harder than what she has. She’s very blessed to be able to do this
If your parents has money and connection everything can happen, However people like us who can’t even afford a house to rent can’t as they have no time and financial circumstances to do all these stuff as it cost a lot .
People like us has to work some where in like KFC to pay our parents for home rent.
All these training that she is doing such as sky diving it’d cost a lot.
When she was 3 she has been enriched with money and didn’t need to work or worry and no stress so she could really achieve her dreams.
People like me also have these dreams how ever not even have time to dream as there are bills to pay.
I already gave up to on the dream not because I wanted, but I had to.
This is so deep, but true. I have not given up yet, but I'm not dreaming that high as well and is never losing touch of reality. It's just funny how success in terms of which level you were born actually affects your choices.
Again for the people in the back! She may have achieved a lot for her age, but she doesn't seem to have a clue about how much money her dream costs. Most of us have to work part time while struggling to pay for college, only for that degree to become useless because there's not enough job demands for what we've learned, and told we don't have enough experience for the few jobs we could get.
She has had all of this handed to her. Admirable goal, but she hasn't earned her place when sitting next to those that have had to work their way to the top and obtain possible debt to obtain degree after degree. Struggles she has never even had to think about.
My only shot at this point in my life is the path I'm taking now. With absolutely no guarantee of getting anywhere in space and a long shot alone to even get qualified to study it. Hello United States Air Force who is going to give me a job and tuition assistance to TRY to get as many relavent degrees as possible.
If I had any advice for this young woman, it would be to go and get the credits, degrees, and work experience of a regular poor person. So she can at least have an idea of how implausible it is for us to walk in her shoes and so she may be even more thankful for the opportunity she has.

Never give up on your dreams!
Especially the kids whose parents are working two jobs to put them in the best of colleges and through their achievements get them scholarships. This is what I call effort.
This girl was born to parents who were astronauts so the selection process put her ahead of the class and the rest is history as we can see (all schooling and training got paid for by the companies investing in her future.)
@Petricor money, money, money money everything! She literally didn’t do anything, all she did was go to space camps and training and now she’s here. It would take me 20 years to make it to her spot, look at what money does, I want to be the first person on Mars and it’s not fair. I have a right to dream and peruse my dreams, but money is hiding😒😞
Her father actually is working in the tv industry and raised here alone...
No she has no affiliation with nasa in any way shape or form.
@Petricor same here. It is the reality for poor people. Even though you want to sacrifice everything but no one wants your sacrifice. In my country, there's no space-related courses offered and we dreamers, were left with our second best choice, practicality.
I found this video to basically explain to me about how you can achieve your dreams at a young age. To me it’s not about the age, if it takes you from leaving school to becoming an astronaut 20years to accomplish that’s better than starting from a young age. It’s not about pushing yourself to choose and get your dream career before your 23, it’s about spending or dedicating your side to that dream, the best people are the ones who make up there mind and work hard to achieve that dream. She basically makes me feel like I should get some crazily qualified job before I’m legally able to drink.
When I was 4 years old, I looked up at the moon and knew I wanted to be an astronaut. However, I never acted on that dream, I didn't have the parental support and more importantly, I didn't believe I could accomplish it. No one in my family or neighborhood had really ever achieved anything more than blue collar status. How dare I dream so big. I don't really have any regrets, I actually earned my degree BSEE and have a nice white collar career, and am a Navy Reserve Officer. But I still dream of the moon!
mam , i really appreciate your parents for letting you to choose such a bold career and for supporting you through out the journey
I was a little kid when I see Neil and Buz land on our moon and since then I was dreaming about space, after became an engineer in Europe and travel the world building up experience, few months agp I received a call from NASA to work for the dream of my entire life , never give up. If you are a guy you probably won't make it. Cause future is female.
Wish you all the luck dude!! Never give up!
The world needs more people like her. People who don't stop dreaming, not in the face of adversity, without concern for societal conventions. There is no greater power than that of a child's imagination, and we as people of this society need to do our part to spread this thought in whichever part of the world we live in.
true!!! someone should tell my parents that whenever i discuss about my dream of doing something in astronomy, just support and don't just laugh and say "for now atleast study we''l see tht later !" .They dont know the power of a child's imagination!! moreover i'm 15 !! her parents didnt take her dreams granted instead they supported her !!! I really respect her achievement, i am 16 year old and i am following the same those three rules that she is taking about 1-hard work
2-sacrifice
3- never give up
I’ve seen so many negative comments about her, can we be happy for her? She’s gone so many courses to be certified, let’s just help her go forward and keep pushing her to do what she loves!
there's no such thing as being "certified" to be an astronaut... Until you are accepted into the astronaut corps and complete the official training for the system you're going to be flying on
I rather see a strong and a great leader and tough 💪 person just like Neil Armstrong not some person getting all happy acting like they did this all for free she doesn’t look serious looks like a littles mommy princess paying NASA billions of money each year so she can go to Mars
She wont go to mars its in her dreams
@SpaceBot I wouldn't go so far as to say she's a fraud. I admire her enthusiasm, and that will get her far. But I do agree that she's overstating what she's done thus far, and saying you're going to be something alone doesn't make it happen. The media is of course latching on because it's a great story from a media point of view, just not very realistic. She did recently get her pilot's license though. I say, let her continue working at her dream and come back in a few years.
I also think it's unfortunate she's throwing her weight behind NASA when they've continually overpromised and underdelivered on deep space human exploration for decades. We're still 20 years from a manned mars flight, at least (and still were 20 years ago). SpaceX could use someone with her enthusiasm.

I am 12, and this has been my dream. I don't know how to achieve it though. I thought you needed a Masters Degree, and then work for the air force, and then apply to become an astronaut. Yet she is 18 years old and certified to fly in space. She never worked in the air force, and I'm not even sure if she has an Masters degree. How did she do this, and is it possible for other people?
Its true that she doesn't have any master's degree and she never worked in air force, but she has the knowledge and training ,which might be the reason that she was certified to fly in space. But again this may not be the only reason, from what I've read on other comments, it appears that her parents were also astronauts, so basically she had proper guidance, connections and above all "money". My advise : Don't focus on her age or your age, just work hard and never give up, coz if you keep going you will eventually reach your goal no matter how old you are.

All I can told you are lines of my favorite Dr APJ ABDUL KALAM 🙏
I wish you all the very best 👍
Thanks dude❤️
I wish I'd be one of those few lucky one's who knew from the start what their life purpose is.
Its so hard to live a life without meaning.
Thanks a lot Alyssa Carson
I’m literally crying right now. I want to become an astronaut so bad but it’s so overwhelming. I don’t know what to do to get closer to my goal. I see this girl that has accomplished so much already and I feel so bad. I only understood what I wanted to become at 16 (now) while she already knew at a very young age so I know I shouldn’t be comparing myself to her but I just don’t know what to do to evolve anyway. How did she find everything that she found? How come she got so many things to do? Where do I start? And how?

I'm in the same boat. I'm 15 and have only just decided I want to be an astronaut. Just know that it isn't to late, and that most famous astronauts through history started their journey later than you.
@@neptunianman i Hope it isn’t honestly. Though, I’m curious, what’s your plan to become an astronaut now that you know you want to be one?
@@raniac.7418 Taking Maths, Physics and engineering in college, as well as extra lessons outside of school. I just signed up for two online courses, one on aeronautical engineering, and the other on flight training. I'm not especially intelligent so it's going to be a steep learning curve.
I'm also trying to focus a lot more on fitness (started going to the gym 4 dys a week) and my diet, and how I cope with problem solving.
@@neptunianman this seems amazing, good luck with that! I’m curious about that online training, how did you find these and what are they exactly? How much do you pay approximately? Flight training as with real planes or just “theoretically”?
@@raniac.7418 The flight training is just theory. I'm doing both the courses on udemy, and I paid under 20 pounds for both of them (£19 for one but I can't remember the exact cost of the other). It's really just an introduction to get myself focused on what I need to know, and I hope to start learning to fly for real as soon as I'm old enough.
