Return of the Obra Dinn, 100%. I can't think of any other game last year that had the best combination of everything, including music, sound design, voice acting, story, and game mechanics.
Go find Clemps, he's a good RUclips boy who likes the same stuff you do, I think you two would gel pretty nice. He made Dragon Quest 11 his game of the year, and It's also mine as well, though I do LOVE me some Ni No Kuni 2. Some of my favorite games this year are already on your list (FotNS, Spoder-min, Monster Hunter, Smash, Octopath, AoT 2, ReRoll). However, there were a LOT of games that deserve more love but were sadly lost in the shuffle. Stuff like Valkyria Chronicles 4, Hitman 2, and J.J. Macfield (which if you liked Gris you should play as well).
You should probably play God of War someday, it was my GOTY, but DQ11 was close. Did you play the Remastered WonderBoy from a year or two ago? It seemed weird you didn't mention it. Also, if you watched Toy Story as a child, you should watch Toy Story 3.
@@keeganseck7751 I did play the remaster. I think I meant to slide in some footage there but basically I feel like it's good but it's just a staight mechanical emake of a SMS game. Monster Boy on the other hand is a fresh look at the concept.
I'm glad you were able to find enjoyment in the Let's Go games. Sadly for me I shall never play them because I thoroughly enjoy the grind, the constant battles, the catching what I want to and not knowing what is going to pop out of the grass. That's some of what I love about Pokemon. Also, Hell yea for Lost Paradise! Mix them drinks! lol
Not even being open to try the games "because its not what you hoped for" and just writing them off as "not for you" is a pretty stubborn and unproductive mentality lol Let's Go ended up not being quite what I wanted but it was an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. Lots of what they added (including the non-random battles and superior shiny hunting methods) almost definitely will be added to Gen 8 because of the overwhelmingly positive response :P
Sato It’s more they took out a lot of what I enjoy from the Pokémon series. Battling wild Pokémon to lower their health and try and catch them felt thrilling when that one ball finally worked has been replaced with flinging your wrist. Evolving Pokémon seems to be replaced with cannibalizing Pokémon caught instead of working on them yourself. The excitement of walking out onto a new route and never knowing what was going to pop out of the grass has been replaced with “eh.....here’s some stuff”. The things I loved about the Pokémon series were either dumbed down or removed. Also, I’m not willing to pay over 200 dollars for a system that has only one or 2 games I want to actually play on it
@@theSato I think there's something to be said about knowing what you do and do not prefer in a game. Not to mention OP was extremely respectful in their comment and here you are throwing out insults. I don't think that was deserved.
I gave the demo a try, but didn't like the control scheme so eh, I can play the others i've missed in the series if I want my pokemon fix, or just keep playing yokai watch XD
Labyrinth of Refrain has a surprisingly great story that deserves more love. It also adds quality of life improvements rpgs need. Death doesn't revert to save, return to dungeon exactly where you left off, break walls to save time, see all enemies on map, a hide button to actually avoid conflict, ect.
I just found your channel and I’m already in love with your honesty and lack of bs tolerance for shovelware and lack of peppy intro that lasts four minutes before anyone talks about anything.
Besides art style I don’t really see why if ultimate is considered a 4.5 that 4 isn’t considered a brawl.5. Both added new characters, game modes, music, stages, and new gameplay mechanics.
Smash Ultimate is reaalllly not Smash 4.5 at all. As much as it seems like that to casual players. The engine and several core mechanics are completely different. It just looks similar, which is to be expected at this point. Not much of a graphical change in the last 5 years.
Yeah I didn't really get it being 4,5 either. It has new models, characters, game modes, stages and more. If Smash Ultimate is 4,5 then you might as well call Persona 5, Persona 4,5 since its still a jrpg.
YAAAAAAAAAAY, more love for Yakuza/FOTN. If there's one game everyone should try it's Yakuza. Be it 0, Kiwami, or Fist of the North Star, people should play Yakuza.
Man, just finished playing the definitive edition and I'm already planning an EX Unknown playthrough sometime soon. Freaking love that game and have the soundtrack permanently burned into my brain!
It's a shame that being hard of hearing makes it hard to hear the backing tracks to videos. Dahngrest is maybe one of my favorite town themes ever, so glad Austin gave it a nod!
I appreciate your Top 10. It was out of the ordinary and it's clear that some of these games are well deserving and others I questions, and then I was on board. Austin, you got a fan in me.
DQ11 is one of my favourite JRPGs ever, did everything in PS4 and Switch version. They really nailed it, great meeting point of modern and old JRPG design
DQXI is my favourite game of all time for how it has perfected the turn based JRPG. I love it so much! I also liked octopath, although it wasn’t quite as good.
Great list and great video! I loved Monster Boy and agree with everything you just said. As a fellow huge fan of the older games I was pretty much glowing the entire time I was playing it and the devs clearly had love and respect for the franchise with all the little touches and callbacks they put in. Thanks for giving it a shoutout. More people should give it a try!
Monster Boy is now on the Nintendo Switch too. Will pick up Dragon's Quest once it gets released on the Switch. Still on the fence about whether or not to play Octopath Traveler. Ni No Kuni II was pretty good, but nothing amazing. I found the gameplay and gameplay mechanics better than NnK I, but the characters and story was much better in NnK I than in II, which is a shame.
Ehh, you're doing yourself a disservice by not playing God of War and RDR2. Both phenomenal experiences that we rarely get from triple A developers that should not be missed.
I was once playing that Lord of The Rings final fantasy clone game i can't remember the title of at my cousin's house. A random friend walked in and asked "can you jump in this game?", I said "no", and he responded "then what's the point?"
THANKS for giving Ni no Kuni II love! I absolutely adored it and was baffled by all the hate it received (Not every game needs to be Dark Souls). Even though there is so much to love about the game such as the music and the art style, the kingdom building, like you said, is terrific. I couldn't stop until I recruited all the citizens. Loved it! Also Monster Boy looks fantastic! I wanted to play it on PC so I'm still waiting for that release and will probably get it day 1!
Gris is my only problem. As someone who struggles with a lot of mental problems, anxiety and obsession being the big ones, Gris, I feel, only scratches the surface. Not delving too deeply because it's more interested in showing off it's artistic merit. It's an artist interpretation of those emotions, but it doesn't tell us anything more than that. It's not like, say, Celeste where it was coming to terms and learning to accept those attributes of yourself. Basic stuff, yes, but still effective, especially for a younger audience. Celeste felt like it had a message to be told. Gris felt like an artist who wanted to get a pat on the back. And, perhaps my biggest problem, is Celeste integrated the gameplay in with the story. Each time you died, you had a message pop up telling you to keep pushing forward. In Gris...Tell me, how much would have been lost if it was an animated movie instead of a game?
Except Gris is not about depression, but rather grief. There are even encounters throughout the game that represent 5 stages of grief. The source of emotions is not internal like in Celeste, but external. Spoilers below, don't click "Read more" if you haven't played: The main character is trying to come to terms after the death of her mother, with whom it seems she was close, so this affected her deeply. At that point it does influence her mental well-being, yes, as well as impacts negatively her life, interactions, and the way she sees things, but it's not about a mental illness you struggle your entire life with, more like one event that shatters your entire world. The game literally starts that way - her resting in the safety and care of her loved one, and suddenly everything shattering and crumbling. The feelings Gris conveys are different than Celeste, because the subject matter is different.
Huh, someone else who thinks that Ni no Kuni 2 and Dragon Quest 11 are really equal opposites to one another. Especially since the former is based on the art style of Hayao Miyazaki and the latter is based on the art style of Akira Toriyama.
For me, Ni No Kuni 2 lacked all the nostalgia and mysticism of a Miyazaki creation. Or the musical arrangements. Hated it :/ I feel like Dragon Quest 11 is different but I've only played one in the series.
Just bought monster boy thanks to your recommendation and it gave me all the good feels from my younger days just like you said. Love your channel it's awesome 👌
I'm very glad you shared your experiences with Let's Go. I enjoyed Let's Go Eevee as well and it's the first Pokemon game in a while that gives me desire to play whenever I'm in the mood to. Very similar to HG/SS and B/W which are my favorites. Smash Ultimate also felt a little lackluster in some areas. I still like it, but I also found it rough to find desire to play consistently.
So glad Ni Nu Kuni 2 is on your list. Legit just beat the game 3 days ago. It’s so addicting! I love the town building part of the game. Yeah the story is honestly w.e but everything else is great. Definitely not better then the first but still a great game. It’s a shame everyone over looked it
Literally JUST finished Monster boy, and watched this in the same day. I have to say I agree, it was an amazing adventure and despite dying over 300 times, I enjoyed the challenge and loved every minute of it!
I didn't even know about his number one pick. Kinda sick of how most lists contain the same fucking games. That said I definitely wanna play Monster Boy.
Yet another solid list. I don't fully agree with your choices (personally like Octopath Traveler more than Dragon Quest 11), but I respect the reasoning.
I knew I was in for a unique list, and that's what I love about this channel. I REALLY want to play Monster Boy but I'm currently trying to clear my backlog before making new purchases....it's rough. Here's my top 10: 1. God of War 2. Monster Hunter World 3. Hollow Knight 4. Dragon Quest XI 5. Super Smash Brothers Ultimate 6. Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle - DK DLC (might as well be a sequel) 7. GRIS 8. Guacamelee 2 9. Dark Souls Remastered (first time playing) 10. Hearing people talk about Let's Go in comparison to the current game, without having played the current games, is always hurting me. "Refreshing new take." It's actually going back in most ways, getting rid of improvements to the formula but ooooookay...
@@hind__ As far as I understood what he said, he didn't play them since Gen 4, only then to call Let's Go a "fresh new take" that "breaks with the formula". Which is like so common on video game youtubers, you wouldn't believe it.
Austin. Although we constantly don't see eye to eye, I know I'm gonna AT LEAST see something original that makes me reflect on my own gaming habits when I click on your videos.
"... the music would get stuck in my head..." I guess your opinion about Monster World III's ost was changed from 4 years ago. It was indeed a fantastic soundtrack & my favourite being Prologue song, Purapril's castle, Village theme 2, & the iconic Last Dungeon (or Sky Castle).
So two of your top ten games in this list are from my country(Spain) which are both GRIS and Moonlighter, so I'm proud seeing games made in Spain being so spreadover, also, since I didn't play any 2018 videogame, because I don't have either a powerful PC or a PS4/XBONE/Switch, so, my award for best game would be entirely split between Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight and Persona 5 Dancing in Starlight(although P3D has a slight advantage over P5D because I prefer the remixes over there) since they are the only 2018 games that I have played... on my Vita. If not, I think that award would be for League of Legends as it's my most played game in 2018 or Persona 4 Dancing All Night as being my first Platinum ever xD
Man, you and MLiG both praise Monster Boy. Now I really gotta get this Metroidvania game a buy. And mad respect for calling Suikoden 2 the best JRPG ever! It's my favorite too, next to Chrono Trigger.
Leave it to Austin to find something weird for last! Also, I really liked "Wonder boy Dragon's trap" remake. It even had the graphic feature where you could make the screen half original graphic, and half remake, just for fun.
I'm glad Monster Boy is 1st place I'm playing through it and it's so much fun. It's such a great metroidvania and very underrated. Also the anime opening reminds me a lot of Alundra for some reason.
That sound effect you’re using for transition between numbers is the one from Phantasy Star Online when you pick up or drop an item. Just so you all know.
I nearly lost my shit when I found out that Aoi Yuuki was the voice behind our little Eevee. I swear to god Nintendo/Game Freak, you need to keep her voicebank in all future Pokemon titles as you do for Ikue Otani.
This should be good, also can't wait to see what number one! 😄😁👍 Weird thing is, I've never heard of most of these games! 😄😁👍 Eevee is so adorable, now we are getting into the games I know! 😄😁👍 Oh my god, I wasn't expecting that to be number one, but I agree, that game was pretty fun! 😄😁👍
I’m a huge “FOTN” fan, and I’d never played any of the “Yakuza” games, but really enjoyed “FOTN: Lost Paradise”! It does have jank, but the fan service makes up for it!
Also the original Ni No Kuni is one of my favorite all time games, easily my favorite PS3 exclusive. One of the few RPGs I have put a ton of hours in and the story and music were just amazing. But I really cant seem to want to play the new one, the combat looks totally different and no studio ghibli I don't know.
>Suikoden 2 >Best jRPG I too love videogames with seriously flawed design decisions and a competently written shonen manga story laden with tropes. Not knocking on the game *too much*, but the fanwank surrouding this above-average jRPG is its worst enemy. There is such a thing as too much hype.

i bought ni no kuni 2 at launch for pc and I beat it 100% all big monsters, it was a ton of fun and i loved the city aspect and was pumped when i finally maxed every citizen and building
Hey, Austin, no mention of P3/P5 Dancing? I figured you'd make a video gushing about them I'm curious as to if you enjoyed them or missed them, or got burnt out with P4DAN, because trying to hold records for songs on All Night sounds horrible.
I was kind of disappointed with them because they felt like cash grabs in comparison to 4? Much less content and production overall and double the price.
I really wish I found any of those non-motion controls rhythm games fun... I love DDR and Beat Saber, but these sort of Simon Says button pushers... I don't find them fun.
I put 60+ hours into just cause 4 and loved every second, then uninstalled it... Bought the dlc pack on sale 5 days ago and put another 35 hours in, the dlc is a game changer!

Austin. Although we constantly don't see eye to eye, I know I'm gonna AT LEAST see something original that makes me reflect on my own gaming habits when I click on your videos.
You had me in the first quarter of the video, not goina lie
"... the music would get stuck in my head..."
I guess your opinion about Monster World III's ost was changed from 4 years ago. It was indeed a fantastic soundtrack & my favourite being Prologue song, Purapril's castle, Village theme 2, & the iconic Last Dungeon (or Sky Castle).
Nice list! #1 looks lit!
Also I see that spike figure. Didn't notice that till today
The DQ11 port for the Switch is going to have the orchestral soundrack instead of the MIDI FYI.
Oooh YES! Monster Boy is a really good game! I hope the same dabs one day make a sequel because I want more!
So glad to see "Moonlighter" on this list. That game needs a whole lot more love
I fuck with the Tokyo Xanadu music during the Just Cause segment. Awesome game (Tokyo Xanadu and Just Cause)
I heard about Monster Boy on another video, and I liked what I saw; I'm probably gonna pick it up.
Man, you and MLiG both praise Monster Boy. Now I really gotta get this Metroidvania game a buy.
And mad respect for calling Suikoden 2 the best JRPG ever! It's my favorite too, next to Chrono Trigger.
Monster Boy is the 4th cartridge I bought for my Switch, and is beautiful.
The 5th was Wonder Boy III.
Leave it to Austin to find something weird for last! Also, I really liked "Wonder boy Dragon's trap" remake. It even had the graphic feature where you could make the screen half original graphic, and half remake, just for fun.
LOL its the GT/EZA boys at the end, thats fun to see them here.
Wait... A whole new Monster Boy game!? *heads to Steam to add it to my wish list*
Knew that fist of the North Star would be on here what a great anime game
your logo popping up just gives me PSO vibes from the sound effect
I'm glad Monster Boy is 1st place I'm playing through it and it's so much fun. It's such a great metroidvania and very underrated. Also the anime opening reminds me a lot of Alundra for some reason.
I've loved the EDF games since EDF: 2017.
That sound effect you’re using for transition between numbers is the one from Phantasy Star Online when you pick up or drop an item. Just so you all know.
Great list, a lot of games that I still need to finish or pick up. Regarding jc4, I love the game but it crashes every 10 minutes when I play it.
I nearly lost my shit when I found out that Aoi Yuuki was the voice behind our little Eevee. I swear to god Nintendo/Game Freak, you need to keep her voicebank in all future Pokemon titles as you do for Ikue Otani.
Austin just called Suikoden II the best JRPG of all time.
I see he's a man of culture as well.
This should be good, also can't wait to see what number one! 😄😁👍
Weird thing is, I've never heard of most of these games! 😄😁👍
Eevee is so adorable, now we are getting into the games I know! 😄😁👍
Oh my god, I wasn't expecting that to be number one, but I agree, that game was pretty fun! 😄😁👍
Thought he said Monster Prom at the end and almost busted
>eevee in the thumbnail
are you serious
EDIT: holy shit he's serious
20:27 LOOK THERE I AM GARY, THERE I AM!
I’m a huge “FOTN” fan, and I’d never played any of the “Yakuza” games, but really enjoyed “FOTN: Lost Paradise”! It does have jank, but the fan service makes up for it!
Spider-Man Ps4 all the way .
I recognized that Toy Story 2 game music right away. Wow.
I don't even need to know what else is on this list. I see an Eevee named Charlie Day I leave a like.
Hey Austin when are we getting a new "The Combustibles" video?
Also awesome vid as always!
I'm so happy you gave No. 1 to Monster Boy!
Hey Austin have you seen the Kill La Kill IF game? It looks really good
What is the music playing during the awards sequence at 19:35? It sounds familiar and is driving me crazy
>Suikoden 2
>Best jRPG
I too love videogames with seriously flawed design decisions and a competently written shonen manga story laden with tropes. Not knocking on the game *too much*, but the fanwank surrouding this above-average jRPG is its worst enemy. There is such a thing as too much hype.
To be fair it did the modern shonen trope thing like 10 years before that was normal.
Glad to see that I ain't the only one who thought Octopath was just okay.
Me: Revisiting your 2019 content in 2020 to make sure I haven't missed anything important.
19:51 Austin what the actual flying fuck is that written on screen, you eclectic beard-shaped manlet?
I'm early so hopefully my comment gets some traction; THE LAST 2 POKEMON GAMES HAD XP SPLITS STARTING FROM THE BEGINNING; JUST LIKE "LETS GO EEVEE"
Also I'm gonna go buy a switch literally right now cause I didnt know it was 2 player. Wow.
Lol
i bought ni no kuni 2 at launch for pc and I beat it 100% all big monsters, it was a ton of fun and i loved the city aspect and was pumped when i finally maxed every citizen and building
Hey, Austin, no mention of P3/P5 Dancing? I figured you'd make a video gushing about them
I'm curious as to if you enjoyed them or missed them, or got burnt out with P4DAN, because trying to hold records for songs on All Night sounds horrible.
Holy shit that PSO sound effect hit me at my fucking core
