- Amtrak operates hundreds of different trains all across the United States on any given day. On occasion, locomotives develop problems while a train is en route. In some cases, the host freight railroad will supply a locomotive so that the train can complete its journey. In this video, we travel to the Great Basin region of Northern Nevada to follow the California Zephyr with specially painted Amtrak P42DC locomotive 164 and Union Pacific helpers as it travels west to California. We'll follow the train between Lovelock, NV and Truckee, CA.

Amtrak litterly followed this slogan. " BE SPECIFIC, SHIP UNION PACIFIC "
One time, I saw a BNSF pulling a Sunset Limited train along the Union Pacific Gila Sub (Arizona). It's really cool to see freight locomotives pulling Amtrak trains
Um...do you mean freight locomotives? Instead of the trains??
@@MNpolarbear Yeah, sorry about that
Awesome catches. Makes me reminisce to when Metrolink was temporarily running BNSF gevo locomotives a few years ago.
😂Ag😊😊
Those were AC4400CWs not gevos
Awesome video, love when up rescues Amtrak
Mister Mike Armstrong, Have A Blessed Summer Celebration, Dude ! !
Hello Mike, the two UP locomotives in front of the Amtrak train are very interesting. Since this can often be seen in your video, is it common for UP locomotives to be used as lead locomotives? Another very interesting video from you, have a nice weekend and best regards from Germany
Awsome video Mike! That C44ACCTE has some horn!
Wow it's cool amtrak 164 Was bean In Phase 4 so cool
More fantastic rail action and catches in this video. Enjoyed another great video. Have a wonderful rest of your Friday.(Steve)
What a great catch with 164 and the UP's!
Yeah me too
Quit copystriking Nandert
Great clips Mike! Love how you snuck in UP 1943!
Where
Very nice video! Very nice flashing ditchlights on the ex-SP!
It's incredible that you are in RUclips since it start
Another thing incredible is that you have the same last name that the first men that was on the moon XD
Wow that's so cool! And is the Amtrak 30th anniversary P42 locomotives going to be retired or stay in service?
I won't walk across the track to see those POS Genesis locos. Just Saying. E8. E9. PAs forever. ! Have a great trip. Stay Safe out There. 🇺🇸
Nice video as always!
Aww So cute Thanks UP (Union Pacific)
Great video as always.
Now, for my question…
(And someone correct me as needed because I am ignorant on this topic)
Horsepower. Only one p42 had problems. Adding on a 4400hp UP unit should have been enough to replace the horsepower. Why did they add a second 4000+hp unit to get it over Donner Pass? Those two UP units should have been enough to get a decent freight over the Pass, but not a passenger train? Please, someone educate me here. Thanks!
Nice
Amazing Catches Mike Armstrong
Amazing video! You don’t see that very often, do you?
Its always nice seeing a freight locomotive helping a stalled amtrak train its even better when the leader of said amtrak train is an EX Southern Pacific AC44!
Awesome catches and video of these up engines rescuing 184 replacement 164
To bad it had some traction motors trouble but I hope it will be fixed up
Was this ES44AC locomotive finally able to go the full 75 mph it was designed for and not just 70 mph? Since it was pulling Amtrak the speed limiter could’ve been temporarily disabled allowing the engines to finally let loose!
Great video as always Mike!! Your Amtrak vids are always a personal favorite of mine!!
Amtrak trains have so many maintenance issues that they have to use a freight train for rescuing. That’s why their ticket prices are so expensive that the company can cover their own a** when sh** like this happens & among other things.
Why is Amtrak always having issues with locomotives if it ain’t traction motors it’s running into farm trucks or cement trucks
Awesome video with Union Pacific rescue Amtrak. 🙂❤️
Awesome! That horn sounds cool at 70 MPH
Awesome video 🚅🚅👍
You should go to Roseville ca on July 30th to see the Big Boy/UP 4014
Where did you get that?
@@theaustinleeytchanneltalytc Right! The City of Roseville website says its happening NOW July 8-9, but I can't find any info on where to view it.
@@3henry214 Union Pacific didn't confirm the West Coast tour yet. It would've been on their schedule by now.
Amazing video!! That is a very cool UP doubleheader rescue with IV P42DC 164.
Where was UP when Del Griffith and Neil Page needed them? Haha 😆
Amazing! two UP locos helping two Amtrak locos. I do have to say though, what livery of 164 do you prefer? 0:41 or 0:55?
Nice!
SINCE WHEN ain’t not shot p42 164 is phase 4
Now I see why Amtrak used to use two or three F40PH locomotives back in the day.
When a freight R.R. lets Amtrak use one of its locos, Does the Amtrak engineer drive the train or a UP crew?
I saw 164 when it made its first run to California. Awesome video btw!
When will you go to the Durango and Silverton and the Cumbres and Toltec?
Makes me wish that the Union Pacific was still running, regular passenger trains!
Hey you caught 164! The newest phase 4 livery!
Well I had saw a CSX helping a silver meteor.
Looks great! Nice video
Nice! I hope 164 comes on the Southwest Chief soon.
Great Catches and vid what's next
was the train limited to F speeds or could they go up to P speeds?
I'm going to miss 184 as the Phase IV Heritage unit
0:44 wait a minute.
