  • Presented in 4K! On April 27th, 28th, and 29th 2018, Amtrak's Coast Starlight detoured over the famed Tehachapi Pass in Southern California. With this being an opportunity that I just couldn't pass up, I headed up this prior Saturday and caught Northbound train #14, and Southbound train #11 all throughout the Soledad Canyon, High Desert, through the Tehachapi Pass, and down the grade into Bakersfield. Traditionally, the Coast Starlight travels along the former Southern Pacific Coast Line through Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Salinas, and then up to San Jose. Thanks to a number of scheduled track work projects in the Southern California area, Union Pacific forced Amtrak to take this unique detour, and run "express" from Los Angeles to Oakland.
    Hop on for this once in a lifetime opportunity of chasing passenger trains through the Tehachapi Pass! All locations are listed in the video.
    Thanks for watching!

    Hello from Zimbabwe. Great video. Quite sure the passengers treated to the detour became die hard Amtrak riders! American railroading always a colossal spectacle. Enjoyed train spotting around Rochester NY as an international college student during the Conrail era.

    In December 2017 the Thomas fire burned from Santa Paula to west of Santa Barbara CA. The fire didn't affect the trains, but the later winter storms and mud-slides in Santa Barbara shut down the Pacific Coast Line for a couple weeks. The Coast Starlight normally runs from L.A., along the coast to Oakland, then turns east to Sacramento, then north to Seattle - or the reverse. Because the coast line was shut down the trains were detoured south to Bakersfield, then east to Mojave, then south through Palmdale and the San Fernando Valley to L.A. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that "DETOUR" was the stuff of dreams for rail fans on that AMTRAK!
    I've wondered why I never saw one "Do the Loop", but I understand now, being a "AVGEEK" first and foremost, but know trains to a lesser degree, I'm learning watching videos.
    Great work, keep them coming, I'm subbed!

    One of the best videos! That's the first passenger trains I've seen go thru The Loop and I grew up in Bakersfield though I live in San Luis Obispo now. That's so cool. Now I will be watching for the next time the Coast Starlight gets re-routed so I can ride The Loop. That's great that you also included the freight trains.

    My question is, how did the Coast Starlight get through Sacramento, after arriving from Bakersfield? Did the train reverse and back into Sacramento? My memory of the Sacramento area is a train arriving from Oakland, as the Starlight normally does, can continue North directly by turning Left and a train heading for Bakersfield, turns Right. . . . can somebody explain what happened in this situation? A very RARE deviation indeed, and some nice viewing, thank you for the video.

    This certainly was a great adventure! How many cameras did you have to use to record it like that?
    The quality of the track at 01:57, with the engine moving as if a boat on wavy waters!
    Ever more trainspotters, such as those from 06:57, now that video cameras are just everywhere - and cheaper than peanuts!
    The dude on the pink bike at 09:51 - the recklessness!

    • @Southwest_923WR
      @Southwest_923WR 2 года назад

      Ummmm, the "DUDE" @ 9:51 was not a "dude".
      And I don't care what nobody say, if I'm on a bike, or walking, and the train is sitting there, or moving that slow and I can make it across no problem, I'm going for it. In a vehicle, gate down, no, but WALKING, or BICYCLE? STop lying saying you never have done it.
      My time is valuable, and I'm not standing in heat or cold because a train is just SITTING at intersection.
      Nuff said, my opinion.

    • @GSkid2000
      @GSkid2000 3 года назад

      I’m one of those lucky rail fans on the back porch of the private car and filmed the trip from Mojave to Bakersfield that’s on the front page of my RUclips channel as stated in my comment above.
      They still allow private rail cars , but you can’t ride on the back porch of them anymore. The new Amtrak president banned it a couple weeks after this trip took place. I was fortunate to film my video from there before the ban went effect.
      They cited safety, but I was told by the car owner that there hadn’t been a back porch incident on a private rail car in the USA since the early 1980s. The back porch is a huge selling point of a private car and they took that away from us.

    Very disappointed. You titled it "tehachapi", not so much. 1 minute and 45 seconds out of a 19 minute and 40 second video was the loop, and not very much of the loop. This bordered on clickbait. It was interesting to see the privately owned rail car on the end. Way to much time on the freights when the video was titled Amtrak.
    Maybe you should have called it "railroading in the tehachapi area."
    Other than that, lots of good shots.
