I’ve often wondered the same thing. When I invite people over for dinner (which I did in my 20s and 30s until I gave up) it’s actually a proper dinner. Great music. I expect civilized, cultured, conversation. But people want to crack a beer and make suggestions how to make the food more common. And they dress like frat drunks. Obnoxious.
Sigh. My mother used to have these and I remember all of the ladies looking so shiny and elegant. I’d do my rounds then get sent to bed. When they all went into the family room where the stereo and bar was, I’d sneak out of bed and grab some cake. Now we just meet at Applebee’s in jeans.
When this lockdown is over, I’m committing to throw some, even if I never make any money! Whenever I’ve sought out or created an opportunity to dress up, I’ve never regretted it.

Maybe not in a formal evening dress, lol. But when I was small, my Mom would really dress up very nicely when ever heading into town for grocery, and errands. And I being her only girl, and sometimes got to go along, would be all dressed up too. That was the way then....

He went to New York mad a fuss and moved her jewelry. He came back with a diamond bracelet as a gift.

The emerald green dress at the end is just gorgeous, but the last one is to die for! Shirley MacLaine looked absolutely stunning
My favorite dresses from this
The white dress at 02:56
The black lingerie set at 03:39
The green dress at 03:45
And the white dress with the pearls down the back at 04:15
There was a dress? I thought she was just sitting on an artfully positioned sheet. Did it even have a front?
@@edwardbrault5902 I don't think so! :O
I could watch a whole movie with these dramatic entrances
Thank you so much for this, oh how i love Edith Heads gowns, esp the ones she did for Grace kelly. Now i will try to look for this movie.
It's on RUclips.
WOW, I Romberg how amazed I was when I saw this film and all the lavish gowns/costumes Shirley McLain wore in this movie. Just beautiful.
That 1962 continental is to die for.
galen stone I agree
Yep! Stunning! I loved the dramatic car scenes with the misty air
I so remember looking forward to the day when I could get dressed up and go to formal parties. Then everything got all casual. I have so much glamourous stuff in my closing and no place to wear it. 😕😕
Don't forget Shirley's brother is Warren Beatty. She was tall and a dancer so good form.
The entire movie is sooo camp. Love it!!!
a woman with natural talent since edith said she actually sucked at drawing before she took art classes in college
Great movie! That yellow, silver and green dresses are my favorites!
Shirley maclaine would look great in anything, she's wonderful actress too.
the last white one is classic..and would forever more still and always be in style.. I love that gown!
This Was All Too Beautiful ✨
This was one of my favorite films as a kid . inspired me to become a tailor!! Always Loved Edith Heads creativity and style! Some don't consider she also dressed the men.
What I really want to know is how they got that orange hat in the car!
Look at the doors of the car... They open it in contrary way of the nowadays ones.
I love this movie so much! lol One of my favorites!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE ! AND EVERYTHING EDITH HEAD MAKES ! I SO MISS THE GLAM DAYS !
Movie back in the day were on another level
I Recall the African American "seamstress" [ imagine using the term "seamstress" for a white designer] , Ann Lowe [ As an African American female, I hate that Ms. Lowe wasn't given her proper title and respect as a designer and couturier, who made Jackie Kennedy's wedding dress and the dresses of all her bridesmaids at her 1953, Rhode Island Wedding, the social event of the wealthy and famous, for the season. I read a long time ago that when Ann Lowe came to deliver the dresses for the Kennedy wedding, she was told to come in "through the servants entrance". Ann Lowe, held her head high, and told the person charged with setting up for the wedding, "that if I am not allowed through the front door, ALL of these dresses will not be delivered". Here is a quote from an Elle Magazine article regarding Ann Lowe: " She faced constant racial discrimination while working for America's most elite families, including the du Ponts, the Roosevelts, the Rockefellers, and, of course, the Kennedys." She never received the credit and recognition she deserved for creating some of the most elegant gowns and dresses of her time. Here is the article

Thank you so much for sharing, I learned something new today!
@@marianar2948 You are so welcome. That is what is great about RUclips comment section, we learn from each other. Stay safe out there.
That gorgeous yellow gown was my favorite; my 2nd favorite was that black baby doll night set. Sigh old Hollywood costumes were absolutely beautiful.
I remember watching this with my mom. I was shocked to see that backless dress. I was like what year was this movie made?😄
That was not a backless dress...she was naked. If you listened to the scene right before this one, she said she didn't have a "thing" to wear. That's why you don't see the front...there was no front.
Susan Crawford 😳😂
She was the wardrobe ever lady most in the Alfred Hitchcock movies creation she maker, just remember her historical Hollywood NAME . BRAVO! From Paris France
Still LOVE this movie!!!!
The babydoll!! Fabulousness! ❤️ Edith!
Me and my husband when quarantine ends, after wearing sweats and barely brushing our hair for three months.
Edith Head gave great costume !
Dang that figure, Shirley 😗 and Robert Mitchum was hot. Men were masculine back then.
Yes they were.
THE FASHIONS IN THIS VIDEO!!! 🤯🤯😳😳😍😍😍
I really want to see the front of the pearl, backless gown.
Wonderful!
Glamour and sophistication
Amazing era! 🥰
My husband says this is who I remind him of in terms of my dramatics and I couldn’t be more honored. I mean if only!
Joi Robb Shirley was a beauty!
Texas 1 she truly was!
😄
The one and only Edith Head who dressed actresses for a generation in superb movies! 💜💜💜
My favorite the scene “It Takes a Thief” at that gala. That was IT for me!
"But darling, I haven't a thing to wear!"
That, is a lie.
It was a joke. We know she has clothes. 😉
We need to return to these times...Style and class!
How delightful. I’d love to know more about that ‘filmlet’. What was Lush Budgett? Why was a film made just of fashion? Incredible design. The woman was a true craftsman and a design genius.
Shelley Dawson . Back then, this was like a special feature that was shown after the end of the movie , and a promo for other movies of the same genre which were yet to come to screen. This would be like a special features of today's DVD movies.
In the movie, this husband is a multi-millionaire. She describes the marriage "It was like one of those glamorous, big-budget films where the leading lady changes her clothes every two minutes."
W Allen thanks so much for taking the trouble to reply. I remember going to the cinema as a child but it was mainly Disney or suchlike. I missed out!
Jeb Ziffel thanks so much for getting back to me. At that time I was just a child and i think my parents felt Disney and suchlike were more suitable. I miss the older films and musicals as well. Where did glamour go?
Holy frick! No more creatively imagined gowns have ever been more glamourously fitted to a more stunningly lovely figure! Werk! Ms. Maclaine.

I just watched this movie 3 weeks ago and even though I didn’t found the plot to be extraordinary by any means, it’s so visually appealing! The sets are beautiful and the costumes, I mean... **chefs kiss**
I would definitely urge you to watch it. It’s an aesthetic experience, and not to mention almost all of the cast are literal LEGENDS of cinematic history! It’s also a moderately entertaining movie.
Why isn’t this more iconic? So good
Eve got bored with wearing leaves :)
I love this movie and this scene is one of the best. I wonder what happened to those clothes. Beautiful.
Our girls today will never know the thrill of dressing like a dream and living the dream, if only once. They are missing so much. Shredded Jean's, anyone?
I have always seen Edith Head name in the credits. I love watching these videos of her work. Very talented person, I think.
They were hot!
the yellow one was my favorite! and I loved how the gowns danced and did things
She was so skinny, like she could snap at any moment.
But omg, the bedazzled white dress.
She was actually just gorgeously slim and a dancer
Wow!!! Those costumes were amazing! ❤
