Most insane thing about this game was that once you get into the pressure suit and look at "original Simon" sleeping in the chair... you actually realize that he is not real at all. Simon died one month after the brain uplooad. So the realization that you are a copy of "that thing" in the chair ... which also being a copy. But you still have a deep bound to him since you went through all of this to get where you are ...
SOMA doesn't only touch the existential question. It completely sets you appart from physiology while capturing you on the journey of its story. It's like the feeling of watching a movie which really captures you emotionally, but that "capture" is so strong that it's "almost you" yourself who IS inside the movie.

I'm glad you talked about this game. Genuinely one of the most depressing and terrifying games I've ever played. It's one of the few games I would genuinely classify as a work of art, and a masterpiece, at that.

44:16 I've actually grown more sympathetic for Catherine over time. I don't think she ever saw Simon as a real person, and she did what she had to to get the ARC launched. Whether or not you agree it's even a good idea, her motives are understandable.

  • @sammy_wills
    @sammy_wills 6 месяцев назад +6

In the end when Catherine brings up the coin toss to simon. I don't really see it as her being deceptive. I see it as her trying to explain it in a way that simon can understand since he doesn't seem to fully grasp the actual reality of whats going on.
In some point of the game, simon sometimes considers the whole continuity bs and comes up with his own coin toss theory to help him cope.
Catherine brings this up in the end to try and help him understand without him blowing up at her like last time, but she fails.
Catherine seems like the type of person who has trouble interacting with other people, the socially awkward type and it makes sense that she would have trouble with connecting with another person. Let alone another person from a lifetime ago.
Can you imagine trying to explain a smartphone to someone in the year 1900? You'd have to dumb down alot of complicated stuff.
Now imagine living in this current timeline. Trying to explain the concept of digitally recreating a human mind and putting it in a computer to someone from a time where that kind of tech was both in its infancy and is something that simon has zero experience in.

This game stuck in my head for years and seeing it again brought back all those forgotten memories so thank you for that honestly, and most of all it brings some attention to a game that I feel like not alot of people even know about. you absolutely need more subs than this keep up the amazing work and youll give pyrocynical a run for his money lol.

I used to be in the group of missing the open horror of previous works of Frictional that was missing from Soma, but after engaging with the story, watching other's expiriance it, and growing up I do like the existential take on horror of the game.
I do still have personal ideas for "afterstory" fanarts- certain obsession with what would happen with the "resurected" people if you don't kill WAU.
But less talking about some fanfik shit- I adore sound design of the game. Beside the enviromental stuff (I love the videos from the soundbooth you can find at Frictional's youtube channel) I adore the sounds of the interfaces and machinery in the game.
Plus the Curie log is something lodged in my head ever since I heard it.
Oh yeah- I recomend a read of the SOMA short stories present on the official site (probably availible through Wayback, but transcripts are on wiki too). Beast like any other and How to climb the mountain are a nice read.

Man, I'm glad that renewed SOMA obsession led me to this video and to your channel. Criminally underrated, I wish more people could stumble upon your reviews and game analysis, these are so fun to watch! I like how this one started so meme-y and silly, but the more you go the more serious tone you picked up, and this was, idk, so natural?? I was immersed in this video as I was immersed in SOMA before that, what a weird parallel.
Def staying for more, keep up the good work :)

I'm so glad to know English enough to understand and process videos like yours. I live in a country that is mostly monolingual, but I'm glad my parents forced me to study English back in my early childhood. I'm so glad that I continued to study english in my high school and forced myself to watch english videos here on RUclips so I could better understand spoken english. And here I am. Reliving my memories from a long ago when I first played soma. I almost cried at certain moments. This game truly is a masterpiece
Your video is also an underrated gem. Good editing, awesome writing, a lot of hard work put into it. That Jack Stauber piece at the end made me blissfully sad. That kind of sad that puts a "lump" in your throat
    Godspeed La Rubric. Thank you

Soma still remains one of my favorite games ever, even after all these years and despite some of my other favorite games being released way more recently by way bigger studios
And it's all because of the story and the way it makes you experience said story, it practically forces the player to sit inside the same suit as Simon and make the same morally questionable decisions he finds himself in the position to make
And every time is as gut punching as the last, it always leaves you feeling like there was no good or correct option really, because even if you try to justify your choice in a moral or ethical way, the world and situation in which they all take place still sucks so fucking much
And it sounds weird but I reality do enjoy how bleak and miserable the world and story crafted in this game are

Funfakt: I killed EVERYTHING at EVERY opportunity! Why? The world of 2104 isnt a nice one and feel its overall the right thing... heck if i had the choice to throw this dam ark into the chamber of magnets, i would do it!
Two funny thinks i also notice in this review (beside of my "kill them all" mentality) is the following:
    1) If you dont want people to kill themself after a brainscan tell them you will delete them if they do. All the sudden EVERYONE is in line and help to finish the mission. You can even have a giant suicide party AFTER the launch!
    2) I asking myself if the inventor of star trek teleporter or the Soma brain scan doctor is the more evil one. Both lead to the question "who am i!?" with no fine (and legeal) answer...
