  • The Walther PD380 isn’t the Micro PDP we all wanted, but it’s a welcomed addition for a small market of shooters who need its features. The PD380 takes a number of cues from the PDP while giving a facelift to the PK380.
Aggressive grip textures, PDP terrain serrations on the slide, double action/ single action trigger and industry standard Glock sights help modernize the PK380 for today’s micro compact .380 ACP market. This pistol shoots great, has minimal recoil, a safety for people who like them, stiff trigger pull to prevent accidental discharges and a decocker.
The magazine capacity is 9 rounds of 380 and the grip feels excellent in the hand! This pistol would be perfect for weaker wrists, weak hands or recoil sensitive people. It’s a great alternative to the Smith and Wesson Shield EZ 9mm or 380.

The recoil is soft, not because of the grip texture, but because it is a locked breech operating system. Most .380 ACP pistols are direct blowback, like the Walther PPK, and have to have heavy slides and heavy springs in order to balance the recoil impulse.
The locked breech (like 99% of the pistols out there) stays locked long enough for the projectile to exit the barrel before it opens the breech and extracts the empty cartridge. I was looking forward to this in the PD380, and loaded a bunch of .380 cartridges with a pretty hefty load of Alliant's Unique powder in the +P+ range and a 105gr polymer coated cast lead truncated cone bullet.
A locked breech would have no problems with them, like my Glock 42, but the loaded chamber indicator for the Walther PD380 is relatively HUGE (a cutout on the open slide side) and I had an enormous amount of bulge in the empty casings right where the LCI is. Usually when a cartridge is overpowered, it will give you signs, like flattened primers, firing pin drag, or even primer flow.
None of this happened, just the bulge at the base of the brass just above the rim. This leads me to believe the weak link for the PD380 is that cutout on the side of the breech of the barrel. I love my PD380, but it's not made for the 1150 fps 105gr loads I made for it. Regular ammo is not a problem for the PD380, though.

Great! Thanks for all the details. I thought it had no recoil due to it being a 380.

I traded in a PDP-C for a Security-380, Although I like the Ruger, I miss the PDP greatly.
I think one of the things about the different feel is the hammer vs striker
and speaking as someone who needs this type of gun, things like reset don't really matter, like a light switch our finger/the trigger is all the way on or all the way off

Bought wife the ok 380 several years back. It’s been the easiest handling gun in our arsenal. But, put an unknown amount of ammo through it and many types like Fiochii brass and blazer brass, freedom as well.
One day had a light primer strike. Changed ammo and went back. It wouldn’t fire and visual inspection produced nothing. The hammer pin looked ok so I sent it in. They returned it within two days. They said it operated fine.
Took to the range again and it would not fire. I took it apart, cleaned it and greased it up/ oiled it too. Still no fire. Called Walther and the guy stated that it only can shoot Winchester white box?
I told him the gun performed well on every type of ammo there is.
He had the balls to tell me I was wrong.
I build firearms for a living. I was a competition shooter for twenty years and I own more firearms and rifles than an actual gun store.
I’ve been a marksmen for four decades and didn’t appreciate some asshat millennial trying to bang heads with me. Mine is simply much harder and wiser.
I’m sending it back with Walthers head of development assisting now.
It’s because of him I’m buying the pd380 to add to my pdp and PPK380’s.
    Hope I’m not disappointed .

If shot placement is the most important thing, I'd rather have this than a larger caliber that's harder to get on target, and can practice more due to more forgiving recoil... definitely better than a 2" S&W 637 38 special +P!

They do- the PSS. You can get a Mag-Guts spring for the 6,7,and 8 round magazines and turn them into 7, 8,and 9 rounds respectively. With a round in the chamber and a full magazine you have a very slim PPS with 10 rounds. I've had no problems with the Mag-Guts springs and followers after the initial break in after installation.

Make that gun with 12 round or more capacity and striker fired and I would buy it!!! Unfortunately this gun is behind the times, what the hell was Walther thinking !! Seriously Walther get with the times and come out with your version of a micro gun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have the Ruger LCP Max 380 that's smaller then my hand and it carries 12+1 and disappears in the pocket and shoots awesome. I also like the Ruger Security 380 which is just a tad bigger then my hand a tad smaller then this pdp 380 and you get a full grip on the gun and its easy to rack the slide and in my opinion is a better option then this gun. Sorry Walther u make great guns but I think u missed the boat on this one.

Walther confuses the scheisse out me with their 380s
CCP: easy rack 380 single stack striker fired with a mediocre trigger
PD380 easy rack single stack hammer fired with a mediocre trigger
Why? Why engineer two platforms and then make neither one great. No double stack? No optics plate? No crisp triggers with short resets?
The obvious things to do would have been
    1. Just rechamber the PDP in .380 (and .40 and 10mm while you’re at it). Same size, same features.
    2. Keep the CCP for the AARP crowd, just fix the trigger reset and put a plate on it. Barrel bumps and bifocals are not friends.
    3. PPS double stack. It’s not 2019, 10+1 obviously isn’t a fad. Then throw an optics plate on it and offer it in 9, 380, and 30SC.
Fixed your product lineup, Gern geschehen

  • @Frank-ug9ng

Sadly the heavy trigger is a nonstarter for this pistol. The ease of racking the slide is completely offset by the horrible trigger, especially for us Seniors!

    • @HuntFishShootChannel
      @HuntFishShootChannel  23 дня назад

The seniors I have helped on the range happen to all prefer a heavy trigger, makes them feel “safer”

    • @Frank-ug9ng
      @Frank-ug9ng 23 дня назад

@@HuntFishShootChannelI don't doubt you help many Seniors and admit you have much more experience than I. I also understand that DA/SA triggers are all different in their design on pressure required to fire rounds. However my former Seal now SWAT trainer advises that it is challenging for senior shooters to practice enough in a stress-enhanced situation to fire accurately with the relatively heavy first shot and (heavier than many other) single-action shots. Given our lack of hand strength and less-than-great vision “feeling safe” with the time it takes to fire accurate defensive rounds could lead to little or no defensive results. I am positive because of your age, strength and experience you can operate this weapon very well. Sadly most those of us over 70 no longer have those skills.
It maybe a fine gun for punching holes in paper I am just disappointed that Walther, with their excellent reputation, decided to market a product with what many, many other commentators have said is a “questionable trigger.”
