I love this video. PLEASE make this a series. It is so much more helpful to hear "Boomers" being transparent about their money, what jobs they have or had, what they are living off of now, etc. than it is to know what "Millenials" are making/spending. While I am always curious how my peers are managing their finances, we NEED more retired people talking openly about how they got to retirement and how they manage their money now that they are retired. Show us the way, Boomers, lol.

I really enjoyed the honesty of this video. I married to a teacher in King county and we've been fortunate enough to make good financial decisions similar to your dad's. I wish this video was longer. I think the military benefits can't be ignored. That can really set a family up for success long-term. I would love to see more of your dad in videos
This is one of my favorite videos I've seen in a while! It is super interesting to hear about someone's financial experience, especially with your dad's humble background as a teacher. It was so honest and transparent. I respect it!!
Dad Church here weighing in, clarification on budget is that yes my wife has income that was not included, and the fun budget amounts actually include groceries, personal spending, etc., basically everything except mortgage and utilities. It can vary because some months may actually include air fares, trips, special occasions, so hope that makes sense.

On most of the West Coast particularly Los Angeles, a cheap little house in an ok area is at least a million dollars. I am glad your Dad highlighted this point. Also, the GI bill allowed an entire generation to purchase homes. You also don't mention it in the video but I think your Mom worked too so having a dual income is pretty key for most people nowadays.

Smaller cities are cheaper. For every Seattle there is a Tacoma. Half the price, but you will either make less or work in the big city and have a bad commute.

I’m 28 and live at home with my parents. I’m glad your dad touched on that! Sometimes it can be embarrassing to tell people I still do, but I know it’ll be better for me in the long run! I’ve been saving up a bunch and will have a good amount saved when I do move out
Don't feel bad Liz. I lived at home too until I was able to rent my own place at 26. I bought my condo almost 9yrs later. I will be retiring after 30 years.
Don’t be embarrassed - who cares what people think. I struggled with the same thing living back at home at the age of 33 until 37 but my focus was the buy a home and it finally happened and it will for you as well.

that’s my plan too! Currently 23 but I know I’ll be at home until at least 28/29 I honestly don’t mind it (and thankfully my parents don’t either) and I know it will help me buy a home in the future!
Don't worry it's normal, I lived at home until 30 and it meant I was able to buy a place with my sister. I actually loved living with my parents and kinda miss it.
Such a great video from a Boomers perspective. Your Dad seems so grounded and gives such sage advice especially at the end. I moved back with my parents at the age of 33 until 37 to save $$$ and finally bought my first home. Best decision ever : )

I think this is my favorite video of yours. They being said at 44 I’m likely not your target demographic but what a neat Dad you have. He made some fantastic financial decisions and continues to make them. I see where you and your sister learned a lot of great lessons from him. That car for $13,500 wow what a find. Smart to flip the house on Queen Anne. Did they end up moving out of Federal Way for that awesome view? I have family in Stanwood - Camano. Thanks again for sharing this with us.

I interpreted it more as him saying that those things that WEREN'T around back when he was young have BECOME "necessary", not that kids are necessarily choosing to make those dumb decisions. IE cell phones are needed for today's lifestyle, when that bill did not exist back then

Boomers and Millennials are probably both guilty of eating out too much, too many Starbucks stops, and so on. And paying with plastic it’s so easy to not be cognizant of it.

I feel like there's such a big stigma talking about money for the older generations. My boomer grandparents were very closed off about money with their Gen X kids, even tho they were investing and pretty well off. It caused my parents to never take money seriously and get them into trouble financially. I love that you showed your dad's point of view and it opens the door for families to have these important conversations regarding wealth.

I’m 29 years old and I make $100k/year. You’d think that I’d be able to get a decent house at that salary but it’s an extreme struggle in this day and age as we all know. Right now I’m living in SoCal. I love the city but I know it’s not sustainable and there’s no way I’d be able to afford a house here. I realize I’ll need to relocate to a more affordable and IMO less desirable city if I really want to buy. Not only that, I’m realizing as a single person it is even more unattainable. It’s unfortunate that it feels like if I ever want to buy, I’d need a spouse that is also employed full time.
I have a lot of doubts about my future and it is really disheartening how expensive and unattainable things have gotten. I can’t imagine bringing kids into this mess. And I’m in a good place financially, I can’t imagine how hard it is for people living on minimum wage..
Shelby. I am a quite regular watcher of yours, yet I must admit I mostly watch your vlogs. But this is by far the most interesting and entertaining video of yours in my opinion. Awesome vid! I found your channel through your random encounter from Shan’s vid. Really appreciate what your dad says at the last 27 seconds of the video. Pretty sure it’s safe to say that we feel this enormous amount of societal pressure to get out of the home at 18 a lot more now than back then because of the rise of social media. I left home again recently at 26, with my son and wife after finding out we’re expecting again. My wife and I were in a better position to leave home and we did. But there’s nothing wrong with being at mom or dads house. If I’m being honest I miss their presence sometimes or that feeling of knowing they were just there even if I wasn’t actively interacting with them. Something I’m sure many people miss once they leave. Luckily we chose to stay within a 5 mile radius so our parents aren’t too far away. Overall your dad was smart with his money and it shows. You don’t have to make hundreds of thousands or millions to live good, just educated with your money.
Found this doing a random search for Seattle. I don’t know why but I watched this video from beginning to end without skipping which is rare for me. I think Michael just gives off this chill vibe that I find refreshing. Stuff like this needs excellent editing to flow and stay engaging- great job!
Honestly, that advice was truly heartwarming and encouraging. It wouldn't be fair for people to judge mine or anyone's situation without fully knowing it, but myself and many other people in their twenties are still struggling to afford being able to move out. The expenses of living is ridiculous in a lot of places, and depending where you work and how little you might make, there are just a lot of reasons. It is really freaking tough now days to get set up..

I've been following you a couple years and now I see why you're so popular. You're just a regular kid with regular parents that love you unconditionally. Bravo. Those down home qualities translate well in the way you live your life and are sharing it with others now. Keep up the good work!
Lastly - I know we don't live in a perfect world and there is lots of challenges, however, if we could change one thing in America I think it would be for the government to structure incentives for families to stick together. We need more families that are like yours.

Moving back home is good advice, I did it at the start of the pandemic and have zero regrets. I feel the biggest struggle is actually finding sustained employment. The longest job I had only lasted 5 years due to the company getting bought out and laying everyone off. My Mom just retired after 35 years at one place, I have never had that luxury.

This was really well done, I enjoyed it. Your dad is so nice, I love how he said his kids are welcome to move back home whenever they need to. You're really lucky to have him. I would have loved to know what his plans for the future are. Also noticed that he still has a mortgage even though he's retired, probably cause they got a nicer place? I'm just really scared to still have a mortgage when I have no income coming in. I know it's doable with savings and pension etc (or whatever you have in America) but I just want to have it well paid off by the time I retire and not have to worry about it.

Only add to this video that came to mind while watching, (from my viewpoint of course); working in other industries, (not for school districts), putting in overtime hours, could help ease a wage-earner through some stressful financial pinches. But the personal time infringement, (working O.T. hours), *can* have a negative impact on family life. Your video reminds me of a more predictable financial time, (excluding the 2006 to 2008 years). Those years represented the *more* predictable living days. Thanks, good video, like usual. 😊
