Hello @jazza I assume that the leviathan, was maybe even like the story of the loch ness monster, and there have been theories that the loch ness monster, was a dinosaur, that was trapped in a lake after the ice age, it could be that the leviathan was a Mossasaurus a giant serpentine sea dinosaur that had sharp scales and a long tail.

Well regardless of religious affiliation almost everyone likes some kind of art. Like the massive churches with art all over in Europe being tourist attractions. I think a lot of people that hate on religious people generally might just have had bad experiences with the overly religious side, zealots if you will. For example being gay or lesbian in a lot of heavy religious areas or even homes wont be easy. Maybe a woman getting an abortion, already a stressful thing, then get called names, and told you are going to hell. Not a fun time. I’d like to think life would be a lot easier if people minded their own business. Haha. Maybe you are a more chill christian that is just vibing, trying to live, and survive in the world with the rest of us, and never once said a mean thing to anyone. I’m just trying to live my life, have fun, maybe make friends, die in peace. XD

Prob because they see it as cool fiction. And it def sounds like it with the giants and beasts and mentions of unicorns. Which does lead me to a question. I lost sleep over this. Oh really 😢 the word "Cool" cannot describe what really this monsters and abomination really means. The Leviathan is often an embodiment of chaos and threatening to eat the damned after their life. In the end, it is annihilated. Christian theologians identified Leviathan with the demon of the deadly sin envy. According to Ophite diagrams, the Leviathan encapsulates the space of the material world.
A real cool detail about the behemoth is that if you remove the horns which are never actually mentioned and add the part where it says its tail is like a cedar tree and mix it with its massively swole body, you can tell that it kinda resembles a brachiosaurus.
I’m a Christian/follower of Christ, and seeing this video just left me in awe. I’ve always LOVED the Leviathan, and I’ve always tried to picture the different types of angels but have had a hard time visualizing it. So seeing your amazing artistic talent bringing to life what is described in the Bible is mesmerizing and amazing! I look forward to a part 2! 😃

The Seraphim are my favorite angels from the angel hierarchy because of their six wings and they are sometimes described as having multiple eyes all over their bodies. I love the weirdness of them. My dad said that the closer the angels are to God, the weirder they get and it's very true. You did a great job on the Leviathan, Jazza. It's so cool.

That was the point of these monsters in the first place. Not everyone in the world would be able to understand the magnitude of evil in sin, but everyone knows how terrifying a fire-breathing serpent bringing death and chaos would be. However, God has already killed this serpent in the victory of the cross. God loves us so much he didn't want to leave us to the leviathan we created.

Even as a Christian myself, I tend to stay away from doing artistic depictions of Biblical stories and creatures because Christians can be incredibly nitpicky and toxic about anything with the Bible and artistic license, but watching this has honestly been inspiring! As a Christian (and fellow artists) I would like you to continue with this because despite a lot of things in the Bible being just the way they’re described I love seeing people’s interpretations of them. As someone who reads lots of books I picture scenes in my mind. The Bible I really ponder how close my mind’s eye is to reality... anyone else?

yea, the Biblically you shouldn't be thinking of a creature. The leviathan is a description of the enemies of Israel at that moment in time. Much like Revelation talks of dragons coming forth... it's not real dragons like Smaug from The Hobbit, but rather symbols of a rising empire or threat.

I have always been amazed by the various creatures/ fantastical beings described in the bible, and as an artist I've tried to draw them many times but I've never come up with anything I'm happy with. That being said, you've done an amazing job here!!

I forget what the Angels are called in Revelations, (I think it's Revelations, I'll have to fact check) but they're described as having four heads, three of them being different animals and one of the heads being human. Anyway, they're really interesting to think about! but I'd love to see his depiction of those.

I always read that as they moved in serpentine ways- like gliding/slipping through the air. Not in actual appearance to be serpentine. We would have to check the Hebrew to know for sure!
@@AdreeThompsonLMT That's a possible interpretation! Though I do like to imagine them as at least partially snakelike. Perhaps with a snake's tail instead of legs, combined with the flames and wings giving the illusion of flowing robes. It's fun to play with their designs!

I would love if you are eager to continue this like a series of making more 3D monsters from mythological/religious stories and texts. Since there are tons and tons of descriptions in many of these tellings such as Anceint Greek mythology/religion, Norse mythology/religion, Chinese, Japanese, Yoruba etc.. Imo it would awesome if we could how they could look based on their descriptions and artistic process.
I honestly am fascinated by the leviathan! The creature that swallowed Jonah has also been called a leviathan and whales cannot swallow anything larger than a beach ball, so it has to be something else. There have been large serpentine like skeletons that have been discovered in deserts that line up geographically with the location the story happened. Adittionally if you look at old pieces of art of Jonah and the "whale" they are all portrayed as long serpentine creatures. Apologies for the long comment, but there is some information on the leviathan!

The leviathan is from the book of Job chapter 41. Growing up as a Christian as a child I used to always reread that chapter and try to picture what it looked like. Fun fact, Job is actually the oldest book in the Bible. Great video by the way.

Super cool idea. Moving away from modern creations and looking into what ancient people's mythical creature ideas were like is a great change. I'd love to see a part 2 and also maybe branching into other religious texts that describe fantastical creatures.
As someone who grew up in the church, went to Bible college and still is a Christian, I LOVE THIS. And am sharing it with my family. The Bible has so many crazy descriptions and just the book we follow, the descriptions of angels, and monsters and revelation, the Bible honestly is EPIC. Obviously there are mundain geneologies, but its an epic tale of good and evil filled with journeys adventures and faith. Idk why but your music and you talking about making these creatures made me tear up lol.
Bible descriptions are tricky because they are less a visual description than they are about character. And as you say, a lot of them are physically impossible. But I love what you did with them, beyond the conventional leviathan = crocodile and behemoth = hippo. Also, I love the touch of your sketches being in that rough looking sketchbook, Definitely want to see part two!
behemoth is definitely a sauropod, i mean hippos and elephants and any land animal thats big right now does not have a tail that comese even close to being stiff like a cedar. Also sauropods were able to stand on their hind legs! That would take an insane amount of loin strength not to mention how big and strong their bones are!

In some translations it's stiffens like a cedar(NOT a North American Cedar but a Lebanese Cedar) and in others they say it swayeth(or moveth) like a Cedar, which also aligns with a Lebanese. Now personally I align with it being an elephant since it's the biggest living land animal, existed at the time, can both stiffen it's tail when threatened and sways it's tail, can find shade under a Lotus, and fits other descriptions in the biblical text.

Fun fact: the word Seraphim is also a Hebrew word for serpents, as well as a translation for "burning ones". Ive mentioned this elsewhere, but, I've always kinda liked the idea of them being these fiery limbed serpents with the 6 wings, basically holy dragons. As a biblical scholar I really enjoyed your take on this. The bible is full of imagery that evokes terror and awe. Whether it be Angels, Fallen Angels or Demonic Spirits (yes, they are separate) the Bible gives us really vivid and fantastical descriptions of these beings. Chances are if you met them in real life you would be terrified. Even Angels, who are benelovent have frightening descriptions. Leviathan is actually a Fallen Angel. His realm is the abyss. The deepest part of the ocean where light doesn’t touch. The abyss (abussos in Greek) is the habitat of demonic spirits, as the bible tells us. Right throughout different mythologies there are dragons or serpent gods. Satan is mentioned in Genesis as appearing like a serpent. It’s interesting to note that Angels or Fallen Angels can actually shapeshift from their natural form to that of beasts or humans. This is seen in the bible several times including the two men who visited Sodom and Gomorrah before it’s destruction and the man standing near Jesus tomb on Easter Sunday.

In your example of Sodom it doesn't say that the angels shapeshifted or anything, simply they're appearance was like men.
@artistryunicorn928 that's why, because the angels that visited were archangels and look different than man. Hence the idea of shape-shifting. Also Isaiah describes the fall of Lucifer from the most beautiful of all that God had created, to being given domain of Earth, and then called a serpent, a dragon, and I believe there is a translation thing regarding the word Leviathan as I think in Hebrew it's the same as great Serpent or similar. This is why you might have the description of being slain with a sword by God because in Revelation the Great Serpent/Dragon is slain with a sword which is the word of God from the mouth of Jesus. I could be getting a bit mixed up but there are very different descriptions of Leviathan because of the mix between Isaiah and Job, and depending on translation Revelation... correct me if I am wrong

I have studied a lot of comparative mythology and dragons or serpents are a common theme throughout different mythologies. I am Jewish and read the Bible (specifically the Old Testament) in Hebrew, so it is interesting to me to see what these creatures seem like when reading in English. For example, the word Seraphim means fiery ones (the -im makes it plural), so I tend to imagine them as made up of fire. Ophanim literally means wheels (similar to ophanayim, which is a bike, lit. two wheels), and their description translates literally to wheels within wheels, which can also mean interlocking wheels. They are also connected to the Chayos, which is a kind of angel whose description I still can't wrap my head around (I read an article which calculated their amount of wings to in the hundreds). Interestingly, the word ''Malachim'' means angels in general, but there is a category of angels specifically called Malachim. I will put out there that the passage at the end of Job about the monsters and, especially, the passage at the beginning of Ezekiel about the angels are often considered metaphorical, so imagination has a bit more leeway as these aren't concrete things that have objective appearances.
I would love a part 2. “Malachim” (the “ch” is pronounced as a khh sound, like “ich” in German by the by) just means “messengers” (Malachim is plural) in Hebrew, and we get our English word “Angel” by way of the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. The word αγγελος (pronounced sort of like “angelos” with a hard g) also meant “messenger” in Greek and was used to translate Malachim. it does but it's also impressive knowledge and interesting from a non-religious standpoint. The 'monsters'/deities/gods etc. that various religions around the world come up with have always interested me, my favourites being Kali, Frejya, Brigid, Ganesh, and the "old school" "angels" which are in quotes because I prefer the descriptors used in the bible versus the not-so-cannon-art renderings of angels that are prevalent from the renaissance onwards.

I am one of those unfortunate people that can’t picture in my mind, I think in complete words and can’t picture anything in my head. I really loved getting to actually see these creatures that I have read about but could never form any image of what they might have looked like. Thank you!
That's gotta suck. I can empathise in a sense, while I can picture in my head, the "pictures" are really vague and almost blurry, so I find it easier to think in words, but I guess it does help with writing.
Thats called Aphantasia if you've never heard the term - I'm studying to be a psychologist and unfortunately its not super well known. The only reason I know about it is because a good friend has it and has shared a lot with me on how it sucks and is a struggle/disability in its own right.

Hello @jazza I assume that the leviathan, was maybe even like the story of the loch ness monster, and there have been theories that the loch ness monster, was a dinosaur, that was trapped in a lake after the ice age, it could be that the leviathan was a Mossasaurus a giant serpentine sea dinosaur that had sharp scales and a long tail.

Well regardless of religious affiliation almost everyone likes some kind of art. Like the massive churches with art all over in Europe being tourist attractions.
I think a lot of people that hate on religious people generally might just have had bad experiences with the overly religious side, zealots if you will.
For example being gay or lesbian in a lot of heavy religious areas or even homes wont be easy.
Maybe a woman getting an abortion, already a stressful thing, then get called names, and told you are going to hell. Not a fun time.
I’d like to think life would be a lot easier if people minded their own business. Haha. Maybe you are a more chill christian that is just vibing, trying to live, and survive in the world with the rest of us, and never once said a mean thing to anyone.

The Leviathan is often an embodiment of chaos and threatening to eat the damned after their life. In the end, it is annihilated. Christian theologians identified Leviathan with the demon of the deadly sin envy. According to Ophite diagrams, the Leviathan encapsulates the space of the material world.
A real cool detail about the behemoth is that if you remove the horns which are never actually mentioned and add the part where it says its tail is like a cedar tree and mix it with its massively swole body, you can tell that it kinda resembles a brachiosaurus.

The Seraphim are my favorite angels from the angel hierarchy because of their six wings and they are sometimes described as having multiple eyes all over their bodies. I love the weirdness of them. My dad said that the closer the angels are to God, the weirder they get and it's very true. You did a great job on the Leviathan, Jazza. It's so cool.

Think about it: Jesus was born in a cave. He borrowed food to feed a crowd. He borrowed a coin to illustrate a truth. And He rode into Jerusalem on a borrowed donkey and celebrated Passover in a borrowed room. He even died on a borrowed cross that was meant for another: Barabbas. Then He was laid in a borrowed tomb that belonged to Joseph of Arimathea.
C.H. Spurgeon said that Jesus was “infinite, and an infant eternal, and yet born of a woman . . . supporting the universe, and yet needing to be carried in a mother’s arms.”
Philippians 2:6-7 points out, “Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being”
He who was larger than the universe became an embryo. Jesus Christ was deity in diapers.
Jesus was God in Heaven. Then He was God as an embryo, God as a baby, God as a man, God on the cross, and God rising again. He never ceased to be God. But He did lay aside some of the privileges of deity.
Philippians goes on to say, “When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross” (2:7-8).
Jesus humbled Himself and walked this earth and breathed our air and lived our life. And then He died our death. We have a God in Heaven who understands what it’s like to walk through this life. He literally felt our pain. And He went through all of this for us.

That was the point of these monsters in the first place. Not everyone in the world would be able to understand the magnitude of evil in sin, but everyone knows how terrifying a fire-breathing serpent bringing death and chaos would be. However, God has already killed this serpent in the victory of the cross. God loves us so much he didn't want to leave us to the leviathan we created.

So I'm a Christian and a 3D artist (I do character art). This is just super fascinating! Even as a Christian myself, I tend to stay away from doing artistic depictions of Biblical stories and creatures because Christians can be incredibly nitpicky and toxic about anything with the Bible and artistic license, but watching this has honestly been inspiring!

As a Christian (and fellow artists) I would like you to continue with this because despite a lot of things in the Bible being just the way they’re described I love seeing people’s interpretations of them. As someone who reads lots of books I picture scenes in my mind. The Bible I really ponder how close my mind’s eye is to reality... anyone else?

yea, the Biblically you shouldn't be thinking of a creature. The leviathan is a description of the enemies of Israel at that moment in time. Much like Revelation talks of dragons coming forth... it's not real dragons like Smaug from The Hobbit, but rather symbols of a rising empire or threat.

I have always been amazed by the various creatures/ fantastical beings described in the bible, and as an artist I've tried to draw them many times but I've never come up with anything I'm happy with. That being said, you've done an amazing job here!!
It is strange as a Christian myself that I never really pay attention to the way some of these are described, especially the angels, and they really are described in hard to understand ways. It’s really cool to see you sculpt and draw these!

I always read that as they moved in serpentine ways- like gliding/slipping through the air. Not in actual appearance to be serpentine. We would have to check the Hebrew to know for sure!

I would love if you are eager to continue this like a series of making more 3D monsters from mythological/religious stories and texts. Since there are tons and tons of descriptions in many of these tellings such as Anceint Greek mythology/religion, Norse mythology/religion, Chinese, Japanese, Yoruba etc..
Imo it would awesome if we could how they could look based on their descriptions and artistic process.
I honestly am fascinated by the leviathan! The creature that swallowed Jonah has also been called a leviathan and whales cannot swallow anything larger than a beach ball, so it has to be something else. There have been large serpentine like skeletons that have been discovered in deserts that line up geographically with the location the story happened. Adittionally if you look at old pieces of art of Jonah and the "whale" they are all portrayed as long serpentine creatures. Apologies for the long comment, but there is some information on the leviathan!

The leviathan is from the book of Job chapter 41. Growing up as a Christian as a child I used to always reread that chapter and try to picture what it looked like. Fun fact, Job is actually the oldest book in the Bible. Great video by the way.

Super cool idea. Moving away from modern creations and looking into what ancient people's mythical creature ideas were like is a great change. I'd love to see a part 2 and also maybe branching into other religious texts that describe fantastical creatures.
As someone who grew up in the church, went to Bible college and still is a Christian, I LOVE THIS. And am sharing it with my family. The Bible has so many crazy descriptions and just the book we follow, the descriptions of angels, and monsters and revelation, the Bible honestly is EPIC. Obviously there are mundain geneologies, but its an epic tale of good and evil filled with journeys adventures and faith. Idk why but your music and you talking about making these creatures made me tear up lol.
Bible descriptions are tricky because they are less a visual description than they are about character. And as you say, a lot of them are physically impossible. But I love what you did with them, beyond the conventional leviathan = crocodile and behemoth = hippo. Also, I love the touch of your sketches being in that rough looking sketchbook, Definitely want to see part two!
behemoth is definitely a sauropod, i mean hippos and elephants and any land animal thats big right now does not have a tail that comese even close to being stiff like a cedar. Also sauropods were able to stand on their hind legs! That would take an insane amount of loin strength not to mention how big and strong their bones are!

In some translations it's stiffens like a cedar(NOT a North American Cedar but a Lebanese Cedar) and in others they say it swayeth(or moveth) like a Cedar, which also aligns with a Lebanese. It also describes Behemoth to lay under a Lotus tree for shade, which no sauropod would be able to do. Now personally I align with it being an elephant since it's the biggest living land animal, existed at the time, can both stiffen it's tail when threatened and sways it's tail, can find shade under a Lotus, and fits other descriptions in the biblical text.

Fun fact: the word Seraphim is also a Hebrew word for serpents, as well as a translation for "burning ones". Ive mentioned this elsewhere, but, I've always kinda liked the idea of them being these fiery limbed serpents with the 6 wings, basically holy dragons. Anyways, love the work,that leviathan looks epic!

As a biblical scholar I really enjoyed your take on this. The bible is full of imagery that evokes terror and awe. Whether it be Angels, Fallen Angels or Demonic Spirits (yes, they are separate) the Bible gives us really vivid and fantastical descriptions of these beings. Chances are if you met them in real life you would be terrified. Even Angels, who are benelovent have frightening descriptions. Leviathan is actually a Fallen Angel. His realm is the abyss. The deepest part of the ocean where light doesn’t touch. The abyss (abussos in Greek) is the habitat of demonic spirits, as the bible tells us. Right throughout different mythologies there are dragons or serpent gods. Satan is mentioned in Genesis as appearing like a serpent. It’s interesting to note that Angels or Fallen Angels can actually shapeshift from their natural form to that of beasts or humans. This is seen in the bible several times including the two men who visited Sodom and Gomorrah before it’s destruction and the man standing near Jesus tomb on Easter Sunday.

In your example of Sodom it doesn't say that the angels shapeshifted or anything, simply they're appearance was like men.
@artistryunicorn928 that's why, because the angels that visited were archangels and look different than man. Hence the idea of shape-shifting. Also Isaiah describes the fall of Lucifer from the most beautiful of all that God had created, to being given domain of Earth, and then called a serpent, a dragon, and I believe there is a translation thing regarding the word Leviathan as I think in Hebrew it's the same as great Serpent or similar. This is why you might have the description of being slain with a sword by God because in Revelation the Great Serpent/Dragon is slain with a sword which is the word of God from the mouth of Jesus. I could be getting a bit mixed up but there are very different descriptions of Leviathan because of the mix between Isaiah and Job, and depending on translation Revelation... correct me if I am wrong

I have studied a lot of comparative mythology and dragons or serpents are a common theme throughout different mythologies. Wikipedia states: “The Leviathan of the Book of Job is a reflection of the older Canaanite Lotan, a primeval monster defeated by the god Baal Hadad.[1][2] Parallels to the role of Mesopotamian Tiamat defeated by Marduk have long been drawn in comparative mythology, as have been wider comparisons to dragon and world serpent narratives such as Indra slaying Vrtra or Thor slaying Jörmungandr.[3] Leviathan also figures in the Hebrew Bible as a metaphor for a powerful enemy, notably Babylon (Isaiah 27:1). He should do a drawing or sculpture of Smaug. But as he describes himself. It would be really cool to see him relate body features with the objects he relates himself to. He’d probably get it immediately, but I’m interested in the depiction.

I love watching Jazza sculpt. It's so cool to see him shape a blob of clay into a master piece! I don't mind watching a 40 minute video of Jazza carving every detail. It doesn't need to be super short.
I'm not a Christian, I'm Wiccan but i have a fascination with the different world religions and love learning about the different beliefs and lore. The descriptions of the angels have always been my favorite. I really hope to see more of these creatures sculpted.

I’ve seen a lot of guesses and people figure out what real animals these could have been… and they ignore parts of the text. It was great to see you take the actual text as a design prompt to create something incredible. Great job! Looking forward to more!
I also heard people say "behemoth is a elephant..." but I then say "elephants dont have tails that swing like a cendar (type of tree) and behemoth was big enough to drink a river dry... that is not a elephant"

I am Jewish and read the Bible (specifically the Old Testament) in Hebrew, so it is interesting to me to see what these creatures seem like when reading in English. For example, the word Seraphim means fiery ones (the -im makes it plural), so I tend to imagine them as made up of fire. Ophanim literally means wheels (similar to ophanayim, which is a bike, lit. two wheels), and their description translates literally to wheels within wheels, which can also mean interlocking wheels. They are also connected to the Chayos, which is a kind of angel whose description I still can't wrap my head around (I read an article which calculated their amount of wings to in the hundreds).
Interestingly, the word ''Malachim'' means angels in general, but there is a category of angels specifically called Malachim.
I will put out there that the passage at the end of Job about the monsters and, especially, the passage at the beginning of Ezekiel about the angels are often considered metaphorical, so imagination has a bit more leeway as these aren't concrete things that have objective appearances.

“Malachim” (the “ch” is pronounced as a khh sound, like “ich” in German by the by) just means “messengers” (Malachim is plural) in Hebrew, and we get our English word “Angel” by way of the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. The word αγγελος (pronounced sort of like “angelos” with a hard g) also meant “messenger” in Greek and was used to translate Malachim.
The other heavenly beasties, like Seraphim (the “burning ones”), ofanim (just means “wheels”), chayot (those are the ones with 4 faces, means “living creatures”), and cherubim (means something like “those who intercede”) are never called “malachim” in the Bible, and they all became lumped together as types of angel in the early Christian era.

it does but it's also impressive knowledge and interesting from a non-religious standpoint. The 'monsters'/deities/gods etc. that various religions around the world come up with have always interested me, my favourites being Kali, Frejya, Brigid, Ganesh, and the "old school" "angels" which are in quotes because I prefer the descriptors used in the bible versus the not-so-cannon-art renderings of angels that are prevalent from the renaissance onwards.

I would absolutely love to see a part two to this! This is an awesome concept to play with. The way you tackled sketches as well as the sculpting was so cool to watch unfold.
These are some of the nicest comments I've seen on youtube in a long time. As a Christian, i am so used to constantly seeing people's called delusional or being attacked by many people being told they believe in something fake and being part of a cult. The comments here have seemed supportive and not hostile. It's super nice to see after constantly seeing hate and arguing, that people can just be kind to each other

I am one of those unfortunate people that can’t picture in my mind, I think in complete words and can’t picture anything in my head. I really loved getting to actually see these creatures that I have read about but could never form any image of what they might have looked like. Thank you!
That's gotta suck. I can empathise in a sense, while I can picture in my head, the "pictures" are really vague and almost blurry, so I find it easier to think in words, but I guess it does help with writing.
Thats called Aphantasia if you've never heard the term - I'm studying to be a psychologist and unfortunately its not super well known. The only reason I know about it is because a good friend has it and has shared a lot with me on how it sucks and is a struggle/disability in its own right.

@@artemis2227 I knew as a child that my brain worked differently from others, that I couldn’t imagine things like my sisters did. I didn’t know it had a name until about a year ago. I passed it on to my daughter, she has done a bit of research on it. I was diagnosed adhd as a child, she read that the two seem to have a coalition. All I know is I am an adult with the combination of the two and it really stinks!
As a Christian I'm quite interested in this type of content you have chosen to do.

This kind of reminds me of that one medieval artist who had to paint a giraffe off of only how it was described, and dew a snake-horse. Only you're having fun with it and treating it more like a fantasy prompt, which I can heavily respect.
