you should make a serie about this!! not only ancient mythological monsters, but also representations of goddesses and gods of ancient mythology and stuff like that! I love this Medusa so much!! Jazza, you are so talented!
Yes please. @Jazza we just finished watching the new series of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. My brain lives there right now, your video couldn’t come at a better time.
Yesss… do the hydra, many people misrepresent what that looked like, thinking it grew two heads when one was cut off, while the more accurate version of the myth stated it just always regrew its heads, perpetually having nine heads at all times.
Classical Historian here! Love the video so much, can’t wait to share it with my coworkers and friends. You’ve captured Medusa so perfectly here! Depictions of Medusa and the other Gorgons are supposed to ward away evil of all sorts, with their appearance supposed to be so scary that even evil itself is afraid of them. I think you captured the fear of Medusa so well! Amazing work.
Have you ever watched Jon solo? He goes into historical characters, gods and fairytale and tells the true stories accurately. He's good for people interested in history
"That's how you know you're onto something good; You're afraid to continue" Jazza out here spitting wisdom! As a creative person myself I felt that in my SOUL.
Except that original Medusa had nothing to do with Poseidon. That rendition of the story came later. Original Medusa was already a born Gorgon hideous mother of monsters.
I just wanted to say, your attitude towards the power outage was really inspiring. You could've pouted and made excuses, but instead you got to work. You rock, Jazza!
I mean, it's an authentic experience! The ancient Greeks wouldn't have had electric lights or air conditioning when they were crafting sculptures or pottery.
Apart from the yassification of Medusa, her entire story also changed in Roman times: it was Ovid who decided to make her a victim of Poseidon's asssault and Athena's punishment. In the early Greek versions, Medusa was a monster from the very beginning. She was the only mortal gorgon but compensated for that with her deadly gaze.
@@zakoohakoo9541 the gorgonites specifically were the three sisters, but similar to the cyclopes if there were more, or children thereof etc, they would be named for them and be called gorgonites too. So a gorgon is most likely one of the three but doesn't have to be if you do not wish it.
This depiction of Medusa makes the most sense. If you make a god jealous they aren’t just gonna turn your hair into snakes. They’re gonna make you a grotesque ogre with snakes for hair.
If you have the ability to turn someone to stone because they look at you it does make more sense that it’s because they are the most “beautiful”. Using “lust” as the sin. I guess it’s human nature to stare at someone that’s considered “most” beautiful or “most” ugly.
Finally an interpretation where she is as ugly as she was supposed to be! In the original Greek myth she was always a monster, had two other siblings as well. It was only in the Roman story that Ovid wrote there came about the more sympathetic version of her where she was a victim (or prideful enough to boast she was prettier than Athena depending on which version you read)
medusa's OG OG story imo is better even tho i like what she came to represnt in recent years everytime a person tells me about someone's medusa tattoo i think of the horrific and actually monster-like version of her
@@xdtweety7007 if I ever get a tattoo of her, I'm getting a version more like Jazza's sculpture xD I definitely prefer the original Greek myths over the Roman versions. They sanitized or changed a fair bit.
Version I read was that she was a priestess at a temple to Athena and sworn to maidenhood for Athenas sake, until Poseidon wooed Medusa(she figured hey, it’s a god, I must be a real catch, who could say no?), and they, um….DANCED in Athenas temple, which pissed her off royally. Athena couldn’t do anything much to Poseidon, but she transformed Medusa into a monster midway through their….dance. Poseidon was freaked out when he realized what happened and ran off
@@LifeLongArtist i've read that one too. There's another version where Poseidon raped Medusa after she refused and it honestly makes Athena look worse since she's punishing a victim because she can't touch Poseidon. (Which i find bullshit in itself that the gods couldn't be punished. Ares was trialed and locked in a damn jar xD)
Personally I like Ovid's version of the myth. If I remember correctly, all Medusa wanted was to be left alone. But Athena's punishment didn't end with turning her into a monster that nobody can ever look at. The goddess made sure that every schmuck with dreams of glory will bother her.
Dude, this was insane. The shaping of the snakes on the back of her head was barely mentioned but was incredibly impressive like that was my favourite part of the whole thing, I think. And the textures on everything were just perfect and I really liked seeing the creative ways to get the skin and snakes done. I normally never comment but this was just done insanely well, fair play! :D
Also, no mention of having the lower body of a snake. That part was a creation of Hollywood to make it easier to animate the stop motion model for Clash of the Titans.
This was really cool! Ancient statues were usually painted and would have something like shell inserted for the irises. They were kind of garish and the eyes were a bit unsettling 😅 I'd love to see Echidna and/or Typhon. They were the parents of a lot of ancient monsters
Jazza, I mean no hyperbole when I say you and your team have single-handedly re-ignited my passion for all things creative. I have found myself consistently writing, sketching, and thinking creatively when my mind wanders. Thank you 🙏
I absolutely love your Medusa! She looks so scary and just like your sketch. I really hope you will do another monster and paint it. Medusa looks so great painted!
She was 100% a victim. Supposedly her beauty was said to rival that of Aphrodite, she was a follower of Athena who was jealous of her. Neptune saw her and wanted her, he then chased her into Athena’s temple and savagely r*ped her and as you can imagine Athena was so enraged at Medusa(victim shaming) that she damned Medusa to be what she today thus making her hideous and her hatred for humanity

Absolutely brilliant design of Medusa! 👍👍 Kind of reminds me more of the original Clash of the Titans 1981 version of Medusa. That version was also pretty beastie and scary. A Greek monster that I would like to see you work on would be the Scylla. That Sea Beast has quite a description that has escaped even my imagination since I was a kid. I think that one would make a heck of a cool sculpture, or even just a drawing. Regardless, excellent work Jazza!! 😁😁

I'm a massive Greek myth nerd, and it always annoyed me (even as a child) when artists drew Medusa as beautiful. Thanks for giving us a properly scary Medusa!
This is so incredible! I love Medusa, and although I like the beautiful version in a lot of depictions, I do miss the originally described tusks which I always found a bit hard to imagine exactly. This sculpture is a great, life-like way to see her in her fully original form with the coloring you put effort into making authentic!
Medusa is one of my favourite characters - you've done a stunning job. Poor thing that was one hell of a curse, not her fault at all as she was assaulted, no wonder she's so furious. Thank you so much for choosing the amazing Gorgon as your subject. 👋🏼🏴
Actually she was a titan, just as her sisters and parents. I think she found those snake tales and fangs pretty cool (and no, an Olympian couldn't just turn a titan into something lol)
@@nilsfaerie584, of course your right, she was a Titan 👍🏼. Good point, nobody knows... She might have been annoyed at the curse, but as you say, could have been absolutely digging 'the accessories' 😂
This is really amazing I love the way that you painted her and bought her to life as she should have been. I would also love to see you do either Scylla, Charybdis or Echidna.
I am so glad you decided to paint this one. This was a delight to watch. This perfectly captures Medusa. I just would have liked more snakes for her hair but I understand how taxing and complicated just this lot would have been. And I think the nrow was a little too masculine. But other than that, she was amazing. Please keep them coming. I crave for this kind of creative content on youtube. More more more! Please do a Jorogumo

I've been watching all your videos for a long time now and this might be one of my favorites. Especially overcoming the weather and power outage the way you did.
Y’know, thinking about it, the only modern interpretation of Medusa I can think of off the top of my head that resembles this is the version of her from the original Kid Icarus. (There might be more, of course, but the more beautiful interpretation is obviously far more widespread.)

The Minotaur would be awesome. It’s simple but is an absolute necessity for monsters drawing/sculpting series, especially if you’re starting with a Greek theme.
Interesting thing about the story that you brought up (that you can't say on RUclips) that's actually not part of the myth. That was made by the Roman poet Ovid (yeeeeeears later) to spite the current emperor. He did that with a few of his stories. He had a bit of a problem with authority.
Sweet! She kind of reminds me of a guidance counselor I once had...How about some clear UV gloss coats on her eyes so that under blacklight they glow? Superb concept, execution, and finalization as always! Thanks for sharing!
Chimera, Minotaur, Centaur, Cerberus, or Hydra! So many good options out there! I wouldn't go for any of the Greek gods though since their actual 'real' depictions are pretty normal and humanoid.
Cerberus!!!! I completely agree. He's been my favorite Greek myth since I was 4. I've owned any action figure or comic growing up. I'm bordering 40 now, and I no longer have my stuff. But seeing you sculpt him would be awesome. I'd love to see your interpretation!
I am absolutely blown away and speechless. I love greek mythology and I am so loving this. Sorry for the storm in the middle of this. Please do more ancient monsters. Do Echidna next!!!! Cerebus! Kraken! Minotaur!
Absolutely amazing how you draw let alone sculpt. I don’t watch much/any art content but I couldn’t stop watching!! I’ll be sharing this with everyone!! Incredible work!!
The back of her head is just *mwah*! Also, I will remember to use mesh and a popsicle stick when I make snakes. I've always done it the hard way. I have no idea why I haven't thought of this.
So, long story short. God of War was nailing the accuracy in mythologies since the beginning in comparison to any other media like tv, other video games and movies. And just followed the tradition in the norse saga. Which was criticized for Thor's look but it's actually again very accurate. Who knew right. 😊

It gives me 🦕vibes for the heads, haha.
This is so incredible! I love Medusa, and although I like the beautiful version in a lot of depictions, I do miss the originally described tusks which I always found a bit hard to imagine exactly. This sculpture is a great, life-like way to see her in her fully original form with the coloring you put effort into making authentic!
The photo you show here is not Medusa this is Gorgo the original Gorgon on Zeus's shield 1:55
Way to go! The paint job was perfect. Best part was seeing your excitement for a job well done. Oh and extra awesome working through the storm.
Bet you didn’t know Jazza knew exactly what your mum looks like.
😂 your not funny that's probably what your mum looks like
How?
Medusa is one of my favourite characters - you've done a stunning job. Poor thing that was one hell of a curse, not her fault at all as she was assaulted, no wonder she's so furious. Thank you so much for choosing the amazing Gorgon as your subject. 👋🏼🏴
This curse version is from the ROMAN writer Ovid, in the greek version from Hesiod Medusa was a monster since birth
Actually she was a titan, just as her sisters and parents. I think she found those snake tales and fangs pretty cool
(and no, an Olympian couldn't just turn a titan into something lol)
@@nilsfaerie584, of course your right, she was a Titan 👍🏼. Good point, nobody knows... She might have been annoyed at the curse, but as you say, could have been absolutely digging 'the accessories' 😂
who gave you permission to use my mother-in-law for your sculpture?
I did
That’s wild 🤣
😂😂
Bro has anacondas instead of hair cuz sankee are first
Underrated :)
Awesome pls more of IT .i Love how you did the real Story of Medusa ❤
This is really amazing I love the way that you painted her and bought her to life as she should have been. I would also love to see you do either Scylla, Charybdis or Echidna.
As someone with a passion for mythology, seeing this video in my subscriptions made me immensely excited.
A true artist never lets anything stop them, even a vast and terrible storm cutting out all the lights!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE GREEK MYTHOLOGY AND CREATURES!!! You should totally do more of these sculptures!!!
I love this type of video, i learn more in terms of character design and hystory
I love the intermediate stages of sculpture. Like, I KNOW it's going to be badass when complete, but the expression on that thing around 6:20 is absolutely hilarious. 😂
Outstanding! This turned out horrifying!!!!
The fact that jazza just keep on working through a storm is really impressive. Great work!
That is nightmare fuel! I love it.
Nobody is as talented and creative as u are Jazza! This is absolutely incredible
Really nice work, the painting made a huge difference to elevate the already stellar work even further.
As someone whos recently starting getting into sculpting monsters, this was very humbling 🫣😂 awsome work dude.
I never thought to see Medusa in such a terrorizing and mesmerizing way
It was a great art piece before coloring, but after coloring it became a MASTERPIECE.
You did such an amazing job. She is absolutely horrifying!
You are such a creative powerhouse, Jazza! What an amazing masterpiece-- the faithfulness to classical interpretations and incredible attention to detail sets it apart.
I would 1000% display this piece with all the pride in the world!!!
Jazza's sculpting are just amazing!!! And i hope to see them more and more as the channel grows!!! 😍
You are amazing, been following you since at least 8 years now, never been disapointed by your videos and your creations, always loved your energy and your talent (i know there is a lot of hardwork and years of struggles cause art is an hard path to follow and conquer), but you always manage to get trhough everything and end up with amazing pieces, just a huge respect towards you, just wanted to finally say how much i love your work and art, i am so happy to see what u became and hope you are doing great and your family aswell. Thanks for all of these years of free amazing content, just wanted to thank you !! I'm LOVING this new serie of making monsters based on real descriptions, it's amazing im having so much good time with those videos, thank you
Bro this is such an amazing sculpture!! Insane work Jazza !!
I've always enjoyed drawing but you've inspired me to try sculpting too. Your channel is super entertaining as well as instructive, thanks for these amazing videos!
PS.: I already liked the sculpture in white, but I LOVED how it turned out after you painted it, those last steps really brought it to life!
Yay, he mentioned Jake Doubleyoo. Love that guy's videos
YES Oh my god! I can´t express how much I love this! Using the proper ancient sources as reference and shouting out smaller creators is both *chefs kiss*
When I saw your last Tolkien video, it became my favourite of yours, but now it´s this one, it´s so fucking good, please keep up the good work!
The Minotaur would be awesome. It’s simple but is an absolute necessity for monsters drawing/sculpting series, especially if you’re starting with a Greek theme.
I love her she turned out so fricken cool ! Jazza please do more of these I’ve been loving watching you interpret these creatures
I think she’s my favourite so far! Incredible work!
Love this one. Monochrome sculptures are good. But I always enjoy when they’re well painted.
The icing on the cake is that he did this in a destructive storm. I love lore-accurate artwork. Very well done.
This is easily in the top 5 best videos I’ve ever seen on RUclips, I’m blown away
bro that is absolutely horrifying 🫨
The back of her head is just *mwah*! Also, I will remember to use mesh and a popsicle stick when I make snakes. I've always done it the hard way. I have no idea why I haven't thought of this.
So, long story short. God of War was nailing the accuracy in mythologies since the beginning in comparison to any other media like tv, other video games and movies. And just followed the tradition in the norse saga. Which was criticized for Thor's look but it's actually again very accurate. Who knew right. 😊
I'm speechless. Just an amazing sculpt and finish.
Magnificent! Snakes are so real. Her gaze is really terrifying. Great job, Jazza!
Maybe you could do a drawing or artwork depicting the fate Poseidon should have had. Something to finally give us closure after all this time.
I love the back, the depth of all the snakes intertwining.
That sculpture looks a lot like my grandma... may she rest in peace, it's disconcerting. Fantastic work!
the different types of varnish are a great touch!
Awesome content as always, congratulations Jazza, next time you could do Grendel from norse mythology, it's a terrifying creature!
That's some truly commandable dedication to an art project.
Jazza, your artistic talent is beyond amazing. I find myself looking forward to these projects as the better parts of my time online.
The level of detailed and the sketch concept art is siiick
As a Greek person who’s also an artist I freaking love this!!!
