Follow me on Twitter for updates on my keyboard videos! / chyrosran22
We're almost at the end of a whole year of weekly keyboard reviews... Well technically I had done reviews before that as well, but a review a week was my plan for this year. I should have enough keyboards to last until the end of the year, too. That said, I might be able to continue on for a while as long as I keep finding keyboards to review... and if you guys still enjoy the videos, of course! So the plans for the future aren't set in stone yet, I'm still thinking of what to do next year, but for the rest of this year at least, I'll keep doing weekly videos :) .
Without a doubt the most-requested keyboard to review apart from the HHKB, I present my review of the Matias Tactile Pro 4! This clicky mechanical keyboard is basically the modern torchbearer of Alps switches, and as such has much to live up to.
As mentioned in the video, this is a sponsored video; Matias sent me this for review. That said, I insisted that I be allowed to do the review impartially, so just like all my other reviews, it is still a genuine reflection of my honest opinion of it.
The practice sentence was: "Hello my name is Thomas and I'm typing on a Matias Tactile Pro 4 right now. Of all the keyboards on the market right now, this one is definitely quite satisfying to use, but old Alps still feel better and sound better IMO."
I have to say, there is a certain strength inherent to Alps-style switches that not many people talk about. The way that the switch sort of collapses once it reaches the actuation point is VERY satisfying, and I haven’t had another switch that reaches that level.
i'm a recent Alps convert. kbparadise v80 with matias click, and then a matias mini tactile pro with click switches. really really really love them.
@@travnewmatic The Matias Tactile Pro is really nice, they beat out other alps clones I have, but it's still no match my genuine complicated alps though I'm not 100% sure about the condition without having a fresh NOS board to compare it to so... it's hard to say, I will add that the spacebar on the tactile pro is far better
If matias would of switched to cherry switches, they would no longer exist as a company. Good on them for choosing to do their own alps instead.
@Matt Insett Whether they are best or not doesn't matter and misses the point. It made matias different, which allowed them a piece of the market they wouldn't have had if they switched to the switch everyone else was using.
@Matt Insett The fastest typers like lightly tactile switches with light weightings, Cherry MX browns, for instance.
I personally don't like them, but typing fast isn't really about tactile satisfaction.
Personally, my favorite tactile switch is alps orange and my favorite clicky is kailh jade, but everyone has their favorites.
@Matt Insett The speed of actuation helps with gaming, not typing. When typing, a little tactility is good for confirming key entry, but not enough to slow you down. The fastest typists in the world use Cherry MX Brown switches. Speed switches are mostly for gaming, though there are some typists who like it, but you will more likely have a lot of accidental keypresses using them for typing.
@Matt Insett cherry is garbage 🗑
@Matt Insett cherry Mx sand
one year in, this is the best keyboard in my collection. I own the Mini Tactile Pro and I am this close to getting the fullsized version for desktop use, while I use this Mini Tactile Pro for my Macbook. Beautiful sound, and the switches feel incredible.
Ooooh I like that sound. Very satisfying.
Another great review!
Thanks! :)
Nice man, really nice. Was hoping for this review for a long time. Looking foreword to seeing what Matias comes out in the future. Thanks for comparing it to alps. Great review.
Cheers mate :) .
I love the sound of it man. I think if they sell the switches to other company's that make a k70 type keyboard I would get it in a second. I'm gonna keep my eyes out for Matias. I might want to upgrade one day and ditch the cherry blues for the closest think I can get to something 1980s alps, but brand new. Sounds really nice. It's amazing.
You're the Bob Ross of mecha keyboards.
Wait till you watch his “Waning” videos
yes his language is quite colorful
My name is Matias and i got very confused when i saw the thumbnail knowing nothing about the company
I shouldn't have released this video during Thanksgiving.... xD
180 bucks for an Apple knock-off design is pretty steep and rivals the likes of Topre keyboards by offering an Apple like USB Hub. The whole package seems to be geared towards enthusiasts or People who write for a living.
Of course, it's a specialist keyboard, like all mechanicals. If all you want is just ANY keyboard you can get something crappy for 10 pounds brand new from Currys (or less).
Chyrosran22 Nah, there are several degrees of quality and functionality between a simple mechanical keyboard made in China with gaote switches - for 40 bucks - and a top of the line enthusiast grade mechanical keyboard, although the former might serve you at least as well.
only n00b gamers need all those lights and shitty fonts. The alps/ Matias switches game just fine and makes typing in chat much better.
@@offbrandbiscuit But... alps switches
SELL OUT!!111
Nah. These seem just fine, but that glossy plastic makes me scratch my head a bit. A semi-matte textured case would look more elegant imo, and wouldn't be such a fingerprint magnet.
Different strokes for different folks buddy.
@@povo844 Who TF wants fingerprints all over their keyboard?
@@JackOfHarts96 You can wipe it off sometimes, bud. Use your body.
There is a reason why keyboards sold in Europe all are [used to have to be] matte finished.
This link explains it partially: www.ju90.co.uk/health.htm#Keyboard
There was some 80s/90s health and safely that declared keyboards must be "anti-glare", often blamed on German bureaucracy, and this same outdated H&S guideline apparently meant that IBM could not sell black colored PCs in Europe as the same H&S rules specified that computers had to beige-ish. Source for my rambling ruclips.net/video/R_GeGkdfns0/видео.html
I have another explanation: Matias always wanted to copy Apple, and this is just their attempt at copying the old G4/G5 era keyboard, down to the sculp and the USB hub. They even have an aluminium clone now.
This is one of my favourite reviews of yours. I keep coming back to it for your quick ALPS overview
I love that you go in depth with every keyboard and switch! You even give your own opinion too and for this I say thank you!
I have to say, if Matias used an AEK-style case, but blacked out, along with either ABS doubleshots or PBT inverse-dyesubs, I almost certainly wouldn't be able to resist and would HAVE to get one.
could you do a redux on this?
I just tested some switches on functionality while hearing your calming voice in the background. Perfect
The italic font on the AEKs are a love or hate thing, some people swear by it. I myself love them to death. The font on the Omnikey looks exceedingly dull and tasteless in comparison.
The font Apple used for their keyboard printing for a long time is an italic version of Univers, but i cannot remember the exact weight and width. You can easily find out which one on Google or by looking on any font selling site where you can buy Univers.
Stig Rabbid this is two years late but the font was Univers, in Oblique, at point 57
I have the Matias Mini Quiet Pro and it's divine! Glad to see you reviewed a Matias board. I love mine!
You have a very calming voice, you should do audiobooks or podcasts
I agree!!
He should go on EFAP with MAULER.
80s Behemoth with Blue Alps FTW!
It's good that this got made, and is still being made. I wish they were still making the Windows version. It brought the ALPS switch back into fashion - a bit. It's not perhaps quite in the same calibre as the old Apple Extended Keyboard as it is modelled on. It's still pretty decent as mechanical keyboards go.
I wish they still made the Windows version as well. I bought the Mac version and am really happy with it.
Yeah I'm not sure why they stopped with the Windows ones. I got one from one of the last batches of the Windows models. I still prefer buckling spring to it so that's what I normally use but the Matias has its charm.
@@neilis2405 If you're in the US and want to sell it, you know who to reach out to. 😀
@@neilis2405 Yeah - the buckling spring is great. There are those recent "IBM Model F remakes" available. The buckling spring even beats the ALPS switch(as much as I love that switch).
gawd..... your voice is vibrating my speaker
The glossy plastic, the price and the bump at the top are all off-putting imo. Do you know if Matias sell the switches individually?
They do, but I'm unsure of the prices
matias.ca/switches/
I wish that these switches came with Cherry mounts so that we could use them with modern keycaps. I think that's the one thing that keeps them from being popular with the greater community.
I don't think I'd be able to find a keyboard with blue ALPS in excellent condition so I'm planning on getting this instead.
As a side note, they now only make a Mac version but they also provide a downloadable driver to swap the option and command keys with the alt and Windows keys.
That is my favourite keyboard on the Mac. I hope to get a modern Model M in some future
Glad to see a Matias board. I cannot wait until they release PBT caps. Getting some new caps to sit alongside my SGI Granite will be nice.
I'm working on building a sort of Mac workstation in my basement, and I was originally going to use some pre-lubed creams as I wanted to try some good liners, but now I think I'll get one of these.
I want to support them because they stuck to their guns and kept the Alps design, and that's something to be respected.
Also I already like clicky switches, so I can't complain.
I have an older Tactile Pro for Mac. I forget which version, but I purchased it in 2010, Best Buy's website of all places had it on sale. No issues whatsoever re: reliability, it has fantastic keyswitches, and I love having the optional characters etched into the keycaps. The only things I wish were different, aside from not having an aluminum shell and gasket mount like a custom keyboard, are 1) the Option keys are letter-sized - I wish they were a bit wider like on the AEK; 2) I wish the Caps Lock keycap didn't have a full-width top - it's nice to have a bit of space between it and the A key; and 3) I wish the Caps Lock key used a locking keyswitch like in the AEK. I would love to find a way to put its parts into an aluminum custom shell.
I actually had an original AEK in perfectly working condition, but it was in storage in my dad's garage, and he decided to throw it out one day. 🤬
Heyyy I like the horrific italic mac font
I just bought a broken tactilepro mini on ebay on an impulse. glad you've reviewed this. I think it's a third generation one since it's got the fixed cable but the pictures made it look like matias switches.
haven't had an alps board in a while so should be a good time once I get it going again
I would like to see a redux video about this :)
rhyy Same
I'm tempted to get a wireless Matias compact board and put my Blue Alps switches in it.
Bought one of these recently (well, the Mini Tactile Pro) and I love it. Had a Das Keyboard 4C with Greetech Blues before and thought it was great-until I tried it side-by-side with the Matias. The Greetech Blues sound so high-pitched and artificial by comparison, and the 4C is permanently consigned to storage.
Thanks, Thomas for all these reviews-I've learned heaps about switches and now I have a better keyboard! Next up a replica Model F with buckling springs, that's on its way, and possibly an HHKB to try some Topres.
Ben Hourigan thanks, glad you found it useful :) .
Would you take these switches over Cherry switches?
Oh definitely. Not even the slightest question about it.
I too MUCH prefer ALPS switches over Cherry switches.
The laptop pro from matias feels pretty bad for me though....It uses the same switches as quiet pro.
No question
I would love to see a review of the Mini Tactile Pro, I'm really considering on buying one of those.
Buying a 2nd Matias today. I love them. If it's not loud with hard feedback, it's not typing!!!
Jesus, that bottom row is giving me physical pain.
After all the testing and reviews, what is your favorite keyboard for typing? I always enjoy your videos and learn something new.
You should make a review of nowdays matias clicky switches. They are quite different and more refined nowdays. But you should make a custom one, more chances of having newer switches buying them, and not the keyboards.
Are you sure the key-caps aren't laser etched, to provide a 'key', then printed? I don't want to experiment with this one, but the characters stand proud of the surface of the keys, as if they were printed on. The keyboard I have been using lately is like that. I wiped off the paint with some acetone, on one of the keys. I was able to reconstruct the original Insert label, as the roughened part of the top held on more tenaciously to the paint. I could carefully scrape the rest off. What kind of plastic would swell and turn white, when exposed to a laser beam?
Yup, very sure - the manufacturer confirmed it.
Chyrosran22 Good to know! Of course the question then is, will the white material be as durable as the original key material?
I wonder how many people took advantage of the Black Friday sale at the keyboardco site? At the moment I'm thinking I got a bargain. I'd never have known about it if you hadn't made this video! :)
I hope they switch to a matt plastic for the housing, like they used on the Ergo Pro.
oh my lord, i bent the click leaf on a matias switch and it is the most crisp switch ive ever owned, ive never owned alps before but i think this is probably the closest i will get, thanks for introducing me to alps style switchs
I didn't know that Matias produces keyboards (I thought that they have only switches). This could be my next board.
They made keyboards before they made switches! But yeah, they're probably most well-known for their switches. I think there are very few switch companies that don't also make keyboards, though.
Looks like Matias have discontinued the Tactile Pro PC version...
Click what link @1:08 ?
Hey Chyrosran, I was wondering if you would recommend this keyboard over a Unicomp Model M? I love loud keyboards and tactility, and they both seem to offer that but with obviously radically different switch designs, at different prices.
please do a video going through different keyboards, materials and switches and show what your favorite ultimate keyboard is.
Excellent review. I referred you in my correspondence with them, but I doubt if that had any effect. I was intent on Quiet Pro, but now I'm considering clicky switches instead. I haven't had a chance to actually try Matias though, despite them being a scant 200 km away, - practically next door in Canadian terms. I'm not quite as keen on the keyboard's aesthetics though, and I like pretty lights (but not discos). I've been looking for PCBs with surface mounted LEDs, but it's hard to find a TKL or full-size.
ahh, The matias, a name (and a sound) that my girlfriend learnt to deeply hate, even more than my Model M's, I love it though, lol. Great review man
How do they compare to the feel of a buckling spring?
have you heard anything about the matias PBT keycaps that they are supposedly going to sell? everyone talks about it, but i have not seen any official announcement from matias, aside from that if their 60% keyboards sell well, they will 'upgrade' every backer with a PBT set.
They appear to have had some delays, I spoke with them about it recently but they're not there yet. Definitely want to cover that, though.
i'm extremely happy that it's happening at all. cheers for the info. : )
Just picked one of these up, I'm really excited for it to come in the mail. I've been wanting one for a while. Hopefully the fact I got the "QuiteClick" means the pinging isn't so bad, but I'm always wearing headphones so I imagine it will be a non-issue.
Awesome review, might be an old one I'm glad it's in your catalog as you provide a lot of good information and buyers advise.
How do you like it?
@@nerdyneedsalife8315 It shipped in a different format from what I ordered, and a free of the keys wouldn't respond on occasion. I returned it and got a full refund, decent customer service I just wonder why the board was so weird
I like keyboards with a bit of ping, along with some added bass to them myself, as to me they sound like they're more solidly made with metal parts inside, rather than being all boringly plastic.
can you do a comparison between the matias tactile pro and the unicomp model m? since they're both descendants of older keyboards and they're on the same price bracket ($100-150)
I have the Matias quiet switch and the keys feel like mushy "nothing" and I can't wait to replace it with something else.
A shame it seems to be no longer available; they only offer it in Mac layouts now which is... not suitable for my uses.
In my opinion, Matias switch seems to wobble around side to side more than Complicated ALPS, dunno how to explain this.. but simply place your finger on a keycap and wobble it. Does that happen with this Matias board? Mine is KBP V80 with Matias Clicks comparing to FK-2001 with Blue SKCM.
But I have to agree that changing back to MX Blues after using Matias for awhile will make MX Blue seems like a shitty switch, and after using the V80 as my daily driver.. I could never go back to any Clicky MX Switches.
Wobble is really not as interesting as most people make it out to be. It can actually be an advantage.
What do you think of your KBP V80 w/clicky? I went from somewhat disappointed, to really disappointed, to actually liking it somewhat.
It seems that the feel and sound of the switches are somewhat inconsistent and differ depending on the row a key is on (keys on the top row sound deeper and get higher each row down). The keys seem to be clickier the closer they are to the center of the board too.
It seems as if the keys had a two or three week break in period where they became lighter and less clicky before settling in. I keep thinking an aluminum case might improve the feel a bit, but that would cost as much as the board itself. That said, I don't really notice these things that much when I'm actually typing, and I still like it way more than Cherry MX Blues.
To my mind, wobbling has a big effect on noise. I have a Matias Quiet Pro and while the click isn't noisy the key rattling/wobbling is incredibly noisy
I'm so glad that they made their own switches. A Matias keyboard with Cherry MX sounds like blasphemy
Matt Insett Mx is baby’s first keyboard
Excellent review. I am eagerly waiting for a Matias Quiet Click board review :)
It must have taken a lot of time to solder those red switches onto the metal board. BTW, I never liked Dell big foot keyboard but it might be a good idea to use them as parts to mod keyboards.
Nah, was easy, I think the entire process of desoldering, swapping the switches out and in, and resoldering, I did in a few hours.
So I am looking to buy a new keyboard so I can get away from my cherry mx blues. I wanted to know if you liked these Matias clicky switches or the Kailh box navy switches. I was leaning more towards the box navys but I am unsure since they both look and sound very nice. Thank you if you reply!
Several reviews of Matias's keyboards have warned of quality control problems. Their switches are dirt cheap though, 200 quiet keys for £42.00 at KeyboardCo. And it doesn't look like this is a sale of some sort. With that being said these should provide a cheap way to revive an old Alps board, or would they not fit?
No, they are completely compatible - the pinout, mount and footprints are identical.
Not sure if you'd know the answer to this question but how come it seems like the switch market is free from patents? More specifically, why can companies like Gateron make clones of cherry switches and not be sued or something?
Switches are patented, but patents are not equally respected in all countries.
Patents also have a limited term. Since Cherry switches have been around since the 80s, I think their patents have probably expired by now. Just a guess though.
I really love their switches but have terrible luck with them. I owned a Tactile pro, Quiet Pro and a Ergo Pro. The Ergo and Tactile developed key chatter, the Quiet Pro’s space bar died on me.
Sounds hollow. I wondered whether some foam under the PCB would dampen that?
Hey! How would you compare these switches to the Buckling Spring? Do you think a Model M user would be satisfied with the Matias Clicky? I tried a MX Blues the other day and they were wayyyy too light and didn't have enough travel. Do you think I'd be happier with the Matias Clickies?
Managed to get a quiet pro for £30, good deal?
Definitely
Which do you prefer; buckling springs or Matias Clicks?
Does anyone know any pcb for matias/alps switches that is fullsize?
How's the quality of Matias keycaps? Are they thick? I can't find a picture anwhere.
Quite flimsy ABS. I thought it would bother me, but it doesn't.
i would love to see you of a review of a keyboard wit Logitech romer g switches
I know that a lot of people don't like Matias boards much. Personally I'm not a fan of simplified alps, so a clone of one would not be of any interest to me. I don't even like white alps in general.
But speaking of reviews of new keyboards, will you be doing a review of the XMIT hall effect boards, that were a hughe success over at massdrop not so long ago? Kind of interested in your take on it and since I bought one as well, it would be fun to 'compare notes' as it were. Cheers.
These really aren't that much like simplified Alps at all, to be honest. They changed a lot more than might appear at first sight.
As for the XMIT boards.... keep an eye open in the near future ;) .
Chyrosran22 Cool. Looking forward to that, and to the keyboard itself to be honest.
Finally a Matias video. Thanks, and good as always.
Nice comparison! Have you tried Fuhua/Fukka switches, and if so, how do they compare to Matias? I heard they were made by Forward Electronics, but couldn't find much else about the feel and the similarity to simplified ALPS.
Yes I have, the switches you're talking about are the simplified Alps I mentioned and compared with in this videos :) . Fuhua/Fukka IS Forward Electronics, they OEM'd the switches for Alps when they ditched the complicated design.
Switch itself is very satisfying compared to standard cherry mx blue, but Matias has some problems with quality. I have 2 boards and them both are having similar issues: in every 10 or 20 key strokes the character doubles or triples.
I have the Tactile Pro 4, great Keyboard but a little bit hollow sounding. Nonetheless really enjoying typing on it.
it looks like something you would get with a brand new dell back in 2003
Thank you for this review and you have an amazing voice
That MX stem switch you used as an example in the video, is that a MX dark blue?
XtremeMoeder just a normal mx blue, his camera makes colours seem more vivid than they are
I do have on, but that wasn't it, it was just the lighting.
Ah alright, thanks for the explanation I was really surprised when I first saw it. What are the differencea between an actual dark blue and a normal mx blue? Deskthority has nothing on the mx dark blue
XtremeMoeder They are said to be much nicer and have a different sound, but I wouldn't be able to confirm off of just a single loose switch.
Hey, when are you going to review that Apple keyboard without function keys that was in your channel trailer or 1st episode if QKT Tips?
Which one do you mean, the M0110?
Chyrosran22 it had control in place of caps lock, it looked like the AEK but without function keys
it had the apple logo in the bottom left corner if that helps you a bit.
Ah, the M0116. Yeah, I'll be doing that one in the future, though not for a little while yet.
In fact it'll be the first video of the new year, it's coming out on the 7th! :)
what is it about cherry and bad products?
Cherry mattresses are filled with the same small springs they use on their keyboard switches. They didn't last long in that market LOL.
.protocetid I ment bad sorry!
In the absence of competitors, it is easy to become complacent. Cherry's long-held virtual monopoly on mechanical keyswitches meant that there was little incentive to maintain quality or innovate their products. Now that some clone manufacturers are praised on equal or superior level to their own switches, they suddenly start innovating again.
@@Chyrosran22 Yep exactly like Intel right now 7 NM delayed to 2022
I don't think I've ever seen someone hate cherry switches so much.
I understand the brown because why get a master of nothing, but you're going full savage on even the highly praised blue ones.
Is there anything to any colour of cherry that you actually like and with other switch manifacturers would do as well and improve upon?
I dislike Cherries because I've tried the alternatives, and they just don't hold up to them in many cases. I don't mind blues though, they're okay switches.
I was still a novice at keyboards when I typed this. Watched more of your videos and got to try out alps myself (unfortunately, they were black alps and quite used, but the rarer keys to press felt very good. I might buy a batch of Matias Quiet Click and replace them since I'm more a clicky than tactile person).
As a spare keyboard I got a cheap chinese gateron blues. They feel honestly more tactile than cherry's, but I'm not sure if the horrible sound they give is a worthy trade off.
It's not as bad as cherry brown. It sounds like teeth grating. I sent it back.
I'm in your camp now of 'cherry is mediocrity, and cherry brown is an insult to mechanical switches'
I wish they still made the PC version, but I bought a Mac model anyway. Works fine enough on Manjaro Linux, haha.
It's a very pleasing keyboard and allows my Northgate to go back to project status.
I love clicky switches. Too bad I'm using a membrane/rubber dome keyboard
Why are waiting for?
too much ping:( maybe some foam on the inside would help?
Complicated alps > matias switch > simplified alps?
Yes, that's how I would describe it, at least for me. Other people's preferences might be different, though, because someone who doesn't like stiff switches would almost certainly prefer the Matiases.
I don't think you used impartial right.
In what way?
where can I buy one?
Matias sell them from their website: matias.ca/ or you can buy them from their UK distributor where I got mine from, The Keyboard Company: www.keyboardco.com/ .
thanks
I've just bought one from the keyboardco site. They're selling the PC keyboard for half price for Black Friday!
www.keyboardco.com/keyboard/matias-tactile-pro-for-pc-uk.asp
You better get snappy if you want one for half price. The offer ends in about eight hours from the time I post this. I asked a guy at the company. Their stock is all the latest version four stuff.
I took delivery of one of these today. You're right about it being 'pingy'! Otherwise it's quite pleasant to type on; though I would have preferred a slightly stiffer spring. . It hardly seems worthwhile to have the fn key for just three other keys. I would have preferred a Windows Menu key instead.
I've been using a TKL ANSI board with clone blue switches lately. It's nice to be using a full board again! Though aside from the Enter key, and lack of a £ sign by default; I actually prefer the ANSI layout now. The " symbol seems more natural over the ' symbol.
If Matias put an = key above the numeric pad Enter key, and a Backspace key below the 1 key(the 0 doesn't need to be double width); I think we'd both be happier with it. Though I'd still prefer the Tab key to be a ^. The cursor cluster is right next to it after all.
Personally I think the numpad should be a 5x4 block with an =, comma, backspace, and tab key xD .
Chyrosran22 I hadn't considered the comma. I haven't used one as a separator since I was in school. I suppose it would be good for international use, as a lot of countries switch their use of commas and periods from the UK style.
dalriada842 Oh, not just as a decimal separator, just as a comma. I use the comma a lot when I do numbers.
Chyrosran22 I think we need keyboards with colour e-ink displays on each key-cap. Ideally with OLED front-lighting. Open an application, or switch to it, and the keyboard automatically configures itself for optimum use. With user programmable layouts available. I know LCD versions have been made, but they were ridiculously expensive!
By the way, it turns out that the Num Lock key does have a use after all. It can be used for activating, and deactivating, Mouse Keys. Though having tried it, I'd go insane very quickly if I had to rely on Mouse Keys, instead of a mouse! I just wish it was a number pad by default. Especially when the numpad doesn't even have the navigation legends printed on them!
I consider Mouse Keys a disadvantage xD . A bit like the Insert key, I'd rather that didn't work either xD .
if you had the white one this would be perfect
I missed this...
I just bought this keyboard. The first thing that strikes me, is that the keys are really "loose" - they wiggle a lot back and forth sideways (I'm not sure whether this is an Alps-thing or not, I'm used to Cherry MX switches). The second thing is the awesome sound it makes when I press the spacebar!
The wiggle is generally referred to as "wobble", and is more pronounced on Matias switches than it is on Alps.
Am I the only one who noticed the different camera at the end of the video?
Hint: it's the same on all his other vids too...
Andy 82Tube no. The camera here is higher quality than on his other videos.
You're right. I used the normal camera for the visuals and spliced the audio, which I recorded with the old one, onto it, as the old camera sound better but looks much worse, especially with black boards.
Chyrosran22 you should do that from now on, as it looks better imo
ItsAlt Yeah, it's harder to type with the additional stuff in front of me, but I agree, it definitely looks better.
wow I cant believe it took that long for someone to think to use clear plastic
Yup, Matias even beat Cherry and others to it, too.
Very solid review, thank you! I didn't hear any downsides for me to get this, only affirming that it would be an excellent buy for me. Is there anything else I should look at that shares the market with the tactile pro? I wish they would sell the ergo pro with these keys instead of the linear ones as I don't like a mush feel
LEDs and a braided cable. Boom instant market appeal.
I really hate the glossy case but the switches sound really nice, something about the sound reminded me of a model F. Might look into third-party keyboards with Matias switches
Unfortunately there's only a handful of third parties, mainly thanks to the dominance of Cherry keyswitches and their clones. I however thinking on making an open-source solution to this problem by using my engineering knowledge, I already came up with a cheap method on creating either plastic or aluminum chassis that's easy to machine out from sheets (and in the case of the aluminum one, a few solid blocks). Programming the MCU is a child's play, the only challenge will be the backlight support, and getting my hands on an MCU since I'm completely broke (hopefully I'll be able to find some jobs outside of the Fidesz's oligarchies since I'm might be considered as a political enemy), not to mention sourcing the keycaps (probably will end up as a group buy from Signature Plastics).
Univers Condensed Italic to Univers Condensed...not really that different a font ;)
your hollow desk overpowers the switches cant hear shit....
I don't know what it is but I'm hearing lots of board ping, its really ruining the sound of the switch for me as it is all i can hear and comparing it to actual alps makes the switch seem way worse than it would usually seem, by comparison its like comparing a fresh cold beer to one that has been open and sat in the sun for a few hours, honestly not impressed by the sound at all seems very flat. Good review anyway mate :)
EEEEWWW glossy black on a keyboard? From new to gross in 10 seconds.
Snoitseuq Pi its why the Mac version actually looks better because the white coluor makes it harder to see the scratches and finger prints.
Apple!
The shape and the material are that of Apple Pro Keyboard for iMac/PowerMac G4 Series.(M7803, www.turningpointtechnology.com/img/KG/Apple/M7803.jpg )
Matias still clings to that awful Apple design.
If they want to revive the AEK, they should have design the case more like AEK than M7803.
Vomit inducing. I would disassemble it and dip the whole thing in acetone to matte out that finish.
Richard Smith your best bet would be plasti-dip.
Huh. makes me want to get the shittier of my two remaining AT101s and just do a complete conversion, but that'd take time, money and effort. it's better off as the "oh god I need a PS/2 keyboard but I have none what do" last-resort board. that being said, good to see you're finally getting the attention of some switch/keyboard makers' PR departments. I think it's safe to say that you are, if not were already before this, the head-honcho here on youtube when it comes to switches and keyboards, now. this video and those who sponsored it are pretty much solidifying that notion.
You forgot to mention the plastic is also prone to easy scratching. piano black is horrible. but, as fellow youtuber FFcossag pointed out, you *can* see through it with IR on a camera if equipped with NightShot or equivalent tech. you may want to make a follow-up video showing this phenomenon.
