@@jonlate4581 Eddie and Alex stabbed Mike in the back. So much for friendship and loyalty. Thankfully, Sammy Hagar has the integrity and character that the Van Halen's didn't/don't.
Alex Van Halen unfortunately gets shortchanged in rock history. If he were the drummer in any other big-time band, we would remember him as the drumming legend he is. Unfortunately, he shared a band with his godlike brother, the Mozart of the electric guitar - it's hard to get much of the spotlight in a band with that guy. But make no mistake, Alex is a damn monster.
The drummer is actually Alex Van Halen, Eddie's older brother! Eddie started out on the drums (which he bought with his paper route money) and Alex was playing guitar (at the insistance of his mother....she knew they were likely to follow in their father's footsteps...he was a classically trained musician from Holland). Every time Eddie came home Alex was playing his drums. As he put in an interview, he finally told Alex "Fine, play my drums, I'll play your damn guitar!" The rest, as they say, is history! Also, both Alex and Eddie were classically trained on the piano as children. Eddie won HUGE piano recitals for 3 years in a row but it was years before his piano teacher learned Eddie couldn't even read music, lol! That's not uncommon with prodigies, though. If you want to see an AMAZING interview (I just rewatched it last night), find his interview for the Smithsonian Institute's "What it means to be American") from 2012 on RUclips. They were putting a copy of his Frankenstrat guitar in the museum and he talks about what it was like coming over on a boat from Holland and being bullied in school because he didn't know English and how the black kids took up for him and befriended him because they understood that, in his own way, he was a minority, too (plus, their mother was Indonesian, though I think you can see that more in Alex than you can Eddie and I think you would have to actually KNOW she was Indonesian to pick up any of the characteristics at all....otherwise they just looked like another couple if white dudes, lol)! I was lucky enough to see them live in 1988 with Kingdom Come, Metallica, Dokken, The Scorpians and, of course, they were the headliners. Front row! When I was younger I thought it was so cool to tell everyone I was so close that Eddie Van Halen's sweat hit me while he was playing! Lol! He was the best. And he ALWAYS was having a blast up there.....he lived and breathed guitar!
I disagree, I've seen other Indonesian / European mixed people and Eddie has more of the Indonesian I think. Don't know where he got that awesome grin from though!
I saw them in 1978 when they opened for Black Sabbath. And it's true, Van Halen blew them off the stage. Not that Sabbath was bad just that Van Halen was better.
David Lee Roth has a unique voice and showman. Eddie Van Halen is a legend. You should do Hot for the Teacher next by Van Halen . I always think I have a flat tire at the start. The drummer is Eddie Van Halen's brother Alex . Ironically Eddie started out on the drums and Alex guitar then they switch when they were younger.
The drummer is Eddie Van Halen's brother Alex. Don't sleep on the bass player Michael Anthony either, his baselines are legendary, and his backup vocals are an integral part of the Van Halen sound.
This was Van Halen's first record in 1978... "Jamie's cryin' " was a song that didn't have a shredding lead guitar solo, but became a hit on radio. David Lee Roth on vocals, Michael Anthony on bass. The drummer is Eddie Van Halen's older brother Alex Van Halen... the 2 formed a band as kids (Alex was on guitar, Eddie played drums... but they switched) and they would play high schools in the early 70's. It was around 1973 that they asked David Lee Roth to join their band as their lead singer, because he had a P.A. system that they would rent from him to play gigs, and decided it was cheaper to have him sing, while Eddie Van Halen concentrated on his guitar playing... Van Halen was finally signed in 1977 and producer Ted Templeman worked w/ Van Halen on the first record... In 1978, the album was released in the disco era and took off, selling 10 million copies in the US... Van Halen opened for Black Sabbath that year and were blowing them offstage night after night (Sabbath's 1978 album 'Never say die!' failed commercially, & fans clearly favored the new band live) Van Halen's first record is considered 1 of their best - Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing set a new standard of playing the instrument w/ the 'Eruption' guitar intro, which Eddie claimed was just a 'warm up' that he did before shows. The 2 covers 'You really got me' (by The Kinks) and 'Ice cream man' (by John Brim) were mixed w/ original songs - "Ain't talkin' bout love" ... "Running with the devil" ... 'Atomic punk' ... "Jamie's cryin' " ...Roth wanted Van Halen's music to have grooves that fans could dance to (This was the disco era) and it opened up a new sound that would dominate the 80's decade.

There were 9 of us 6 boys 3 girls We all played music and sang Gospe My father could play multiple instruments along with my mother. I just love ya watching these videos for the 1st time It warms my heart
Van Halen is Eddie and Alex who are/were brothers and originally from Holland (the Netherlands). Eddie was married to Valerie Bertinelli who is an actress for several years and they had a son. I don't think they ever quit loving each other but in this business, so many external things can mess people up to create relationship issues. Van Halen had some great hits and fun to watch, especially live, cause they ad libbed on their songs and thrilled the audience. Lots of great hits with them to check out.
I absolutely love love love this song! Another banger is "Runnin With the Devil." It's an absolutely fantastic song you should try. You really can't go wrong with Van Halen before the Sammy Hagar years.
I'm partial to those first albums with David Lee Roth as well. Kelli. Nothing against Sammy, but I also love the pre-synthesizer sound of these first few albums.
@Tessmage Tessera Again, I respectfully disagee. My dislike of Van Hagar does not come from unfamiliarity with it. I tried it, it bores me to tears. If you enjoy it, more power to you. Happy New Year.
Since everyone else seems to be filling in all the other information, I'll talk about the song itself... It is the story of a (likely) teenage girl who has been dating a boy for some undetermined time. The song opens with Jamie being confronted with a "make out" session that is being pushed to go "all the way" as illustrated in the lines about the "look in his eyes" and "it was now or never" but Jamie is refusing because she believes that love should be more than just the sex of a "one night stand"... essentially the boy was getting impatient and it was either have sex or he is leaving for someone who will "give it up" for him easier. The song is about her crying for the lost boy that she loves but had to say good-bye to, and her thoughts of trying to feel better by writing a letter about a second chance, but she also knows that he would demand the sex if they got back together... therefore why she is crying... It was quite a "moral" song for the time, following the "free love" era of the '60's and Jamie (and all girls) to stand up for their morals despite the pain of loss... Many thought it was mocking the poor girl, but the words and the style were deliberately loose enough to allow for either interpretation... I was lucky enough to have met Van Halen just prior to their first album as they were doing gigs all over the place sorting out which songs were most liked for the new album. Needless to say I pounced on that album as soon as it hit the stores and it was every bit as awesome as the live show I got to see... Nostalgia is bittersweet now... but I wouldn't trade it for anything!
Eddie Van Halen’s brother Alex is the drummer. Michael Anthony on bass. Eddie Van Halen’s son released a really good rock album this past year under the name Mammoth WVH. Give the song “You’re To Blame” a spin for heavy stuff. “Distance” is a softer one he wrote for his dad after he passed.
Runnin With the Devil is my all time favorite and the first song I ever heard by Van Halen. I use to play it so loud. My mama would come in my room and say please don't listen to that devil music. Bless her she just didn't know. Lol
Love Van Halen. Ever since you (Re)introduced me to the Moody Blues I can't get enough. So many great songs, Knights in white satin is my favorite , Then there's " i'm just a singer in a rock & roll band ( this one is amazing too)very upbeat and they use many instruments.Piano,Sax,Guitar the drums are dominate too. There's also Tuesday afternoon and Ride my See Saw . Just amazing.
here is a fun fact: Rapper Tone Loc sampled the drum beat for his song Wild Thing. most notably the intro drum fill. drummer incidentally is Eddie's brother Alex Van Halen.
Good Stuff It's about time that y'all listened to some more Van Halen. This song was sampled in "Wild Thing", by Tone-Loc. Don't forget about Michael Anthony on that bass. I love this whole album. It's all so good. My favorites are probably "Atomic Punk" and "On Fire".
Ohhh This is awesome! Old Van Halen. I can’t believe Eddie is gone.😢 RIP Eddie The drummer is Eddie’s brother Alex Van Halen. Then it’s Eddie, & Michael Anthony singing backup. It was Eddie & Alex who started Van Halen. Hey Amber, we need some old Pat Benatar. Hell is for Children Fire & Ice Treat me Right
Ain't talking bout love-Van Halen ( studio version ) was one of the 1st Van Halen songs to hit the Airwaves in 1978 & dropped jaws all over the World. The record company put out a remake of The Kinks-You really got me ....Van Halens version is Amped up like 10 billion Megawatts👍 Loved the Reaction
This here is 70s BRATNESS LOL The good ol YEARS 1978 Here Its gunny i hear a lot of comments that the late 70s was mostly disco lol WHAT PLANET DID THEY LIVE ON ? The late ,,, 70s were huge for Rock and Roll This was 1978 The Cars The Police ,,Toto among many more rock bands WERE HUGE IN THE LATE 70s
Early Van Halen had more of an 'edge' to their music. Maybe with both of you being teachers, you may like their video for 'Hot for Teacher' Funny video.
Great tune… VH debut album came out when I was in high school and you couldn’t go to a kegger without hearing this song or running with the Devil 😈 good times
Next choice should be "Hot for Teacher". It absolutely showcases the Van Halen brothers while Diamond Dave does his thing too. The video really displays their fun side also. Take your socks off for this one because it will just knock them off anyway.
Eric Johnson is opening up for Buddy Guy at the Rayman in Nashville, I guess I need to go for sure. Watched Sammy Hagar and the Circle last night, Awesome seeing Sammy and Michael Anthony again, also Jason Bonham and Vic Johnson.
Love me some Van Halen! Love watching Amber and J reacting to Van Halen even more! Thank you two for bring a smile to my face every day! A couple Van Halen suggestions I have are Running with the devil and I’ll wait.
Had the pleasure of seeing Van Halen in concert in 70s great fun with a great band. Gotta say we had the best talent with best music (no auto tune nonsense ).
An unsung classic from VH is So this is Love. Thumping bass line to open and as always. The rest doing their thang. I saw VH 3 times in concert. Luckily DLR once.
You guys should react to "When I'm Gone" by '3 Doors Down.' It's a song that they dedicated to the Men and Women in our Military. They're a GREAT Southern Rock Band that you all are missing out on!
There will never be another another band like the Mighty Van Halen! At least we were alive during this time. I just love Eddie's tone - it is a very unusual sound that is very hard to replicate. He was by far the most creative electric guitarist of all time and his playing moved the bar into another universe. Great pick guys - really showed the Van Halen sound. Gotta love the back ground vocals - Michael Anthony was a big part of their sound with his highs from hell as EVH has said. Again, Great and Fantastic job! Had to go back and add something - You 2 are an awesome team!!!
Finally, more Van Halen. Thanks or reacting reacting. They are a deep rabbit hole. Try Right Now, When it's Love or Why Can't this be Love. The drummer is Alex Van Halen! Great hair band!
A friend had I think it was Van Halen 4 ( he had several and I could be wrong) but regardless we used to listen to the tape every time we were driving. I Loved that entire album regardless which one it was.
Love seventies Van Halen. This was the first song I remember hearing by them on the radio, back in 1978. Since y'all liked this, you'd probably also like seventies Cheap Trick, especially their 1977 "I Want You to Want Me."
You should really check out "Right Now" and "Why Can't This Be Love?" Both also by Van Halen but with a different lead singer - Sammy Hagar. Also an incredible vocalist.
This song is a perfect example of how Eddie was great on rhythm as well as lead. The "drummer" is only Alex Van Halen. 😊 Talented family. Happens to also be one of the flat out greatest drummers in rock who only got eclipsed because his brother is a genius. Also, can we just talk about that bass for a second?? Michael Anthony is a beast.
"Runnin' With the Devil" is an all-out rocker. At one point during his estrangement from the band, David Lee Roth put out an album called "Strummin' With the Devil: the Southern Side of Van Halen", which is a bunch of Van Halen covers done bluegrass style with Roth on lead vocals.
You made the right choice doing the studio first, they had spot on mixing and production on those albums and try to mainly listen to studio first when you can, you actually hear the song everyone is familiar with. This is one of the best debut albums ever, do The Atomic Punk and Running With the Devil from it when you can. If you like Van Halen you probably would like UFO, great British Hard Rock band that influenced every hard rock band in the 70s & 80s. Enjoy! 🎸
Great show as always. If you have not yet covered them, another great band from this era/genre is Night Ranger. "Don't Tell Me You Love" would be a good song to start with.
If you're looking for someone new to check out give Brother Cane a listen. "Got No Shame " should pique your interest in this band. If they had been around in the 70's they would have been huge. Rock and Roll at its best.
The drummer is Eddie's brother Alex Van Halen. And you can't forget Michael Anthony on bass with his remarkable high backing vocals.

THE 70s RULED ROCK AND ROLL This came out in 1978
It was so mind blowing. I was 15 when I first heard it in 1978.
Mike Anthony's backing vocals are a major ingredient to this song and so many VH classics. He never gets enough recognition.
He is so overlooked about how great of a bassist and back up singer he is
Michael and Eddie harmonize very well on all backing vocals.
Tone Loc likes that too , he sampled this song in his song Wild Thing. And the drummer is the guitarists ( Eddie Van Halen ) brother Alex Van Halen.

....the drums! The high hat....carry this song very well. AND the vocal harmonies... It's such a lyrically powerful song too about "teenage want" and suspense.... and the "risk of love" .
I grew up listening to all kinds of music From bluegrass to metal I love watching you guys I grew up in the sixties From a .. very musical family.
Uh, both singers are awesome, just different styles. Plenty of the Hagar Era are really good as well.
I'm partial to those first albums with David Lee Roth as well. Kelli. Nothing against Sammy, but I also love the pre-synthesizer sound of these first few albums.
@@rowdymodeler1804 I respectfully disagree. I am a huge Van Halen fan, Van Hagar- not so much. Too each their own.
I agree with you !
@Tessmage Tessera Again, I respectfully disagee. My dislike of Van Hagar does not come from unfamiliarity with it. I tried it, it bores me to tears. If you enjoy it, more power to you. Happy New Year.
Anything on Van Halen’s first 2 Albums are Gold! Van Halen & Van Halen II!!!! Ain’t talk’n bout love, Hot for the teacher….
You can't get any more "no frills, straight up rock-n-roll" than this song!
Lol
Alex Van Halen is one of the GOATS on drums.
This was the first Van Halen song I heard! You just knew they would be good!
Runnin with the Devil is the first song off of Van Halen's first album, and is still one of their best songs!!
The drummer in Van Halen is Eddies brother Alex....
Just amazing.
here is a fun fact:
Rapper Tone Loc sampled the drum beat for his song Wild Thing. most notably the intro drum fill.
drummer incidentally is Eddie's brother Alex Van Halen.
Good Stuff
It's about time that y'all listened to some more Van Halen. This song was sampled in "Wild Thing", by Tone-Loc.
Don't forget about Michael Anthony on that bass. I love this whole album. It's all so good. My favorites are probably "Atomic Punk" and "On Fire".
I hope they check that out!
@@dipsydoodle7988,
That would be good. I'm sure that they'd recognize "Jamie's Cryin'" in it.
While his bass is solid, its his background vocals that are part of the core VH sound.
Alex Van Halen, Edie’s brother, is the drummer in the band. You gotta listen to Jump, Panama, Dance the Night Away. Love your show!
Ohhh This is awesome!
Old Van Halen.
I can’t believe Eddie is gone.😢
RIP Eddie
The drummer is Eddie’s brother Alex Van Halen.
Then it’s Eddie, & Michael Anthony singing backup.
It was Eddie & Alex who started Van Halen.
Hey Amber, we need some old Pat Benatar.
Hell is for Children
Fire & Ice
Treat me Right
The drummer is his brother Alex. They started the band together.
It wouldnt be VH without Micheal Anthony's bass and signature back up vocals.
THE ANGELS ARE IN THE TOP 10 LIVE BANDS OF ALL TIME!!
INCREDIBLE LIVE
Ain't talkin bout love, Running with the devil, Love walks in, Dreams, a lot of Van Halen for you guys to react to. 🙏
Saw live in concert they were great music blow them away
Ain't talking bout love-Van Halen ( studio version ) was one of the 1st Van Halen songs to hit the Airwaves in 1978 & dropped jaws all over the World. The record company put out a remake of The Kinks-You really got me ....Van Halens version is Amped up like 10 billion Megawatts👍 Loved the Reaction
I've been listening to music for over 50 years now, this is my all time number one favorite song of all.
For the time this is a fantastic recording and mix. Still sounds great today!
Just watched this reaction. LOVE Van Halen. The drummer is Eddie's brother, Alex Van Halen. Love you both!!
I like a lot of Van Halen's catalogue, but "Dreams" is my all time favorite. Power Ballad FTW.
Love 'Dreams' !!!
Absolutely, Sammy Hagar could have shattered glass with those vocals!
Playing this cassette on a massive boom box, while riding our skateboards to the beach in So. Cal. in early 80's. GOOD TIMES!!!
Eddie Trunk once said he would put Van Halen's first four albums up against anyone else's. I agree; I'd do the same.
There's a guitarist you absolutely must check out. You will love Eric Johnson, "Cliffs of Dover" (live), I promise.
Yes, fantastic song!
Eric Johnson is opening up for Buddy Guy at the Rayman in Nashville, I guess I need to go for sure. Watched Sammy Hagar and the Circle last night, Awesome seeing Sammy and Michael Anthony again, also Jason Bonham and Vic Johnson.
I've been sending them emails suggesting Cliffs Of Dover.
Eric Johnson is on my Mt Rushmore of guitarists.
This song is an example of why i love DLR. He had soul. You sense that he really lived, breathed, felt and, believed in what he was singing.
Love me some Van Halen! Love watching Amber and J reacting to Van Halen even more! Thank you two for bring a smile to my face every day! A couple Van Halen suggestions I have are Running with the devil and I’ll wait.
I’m sure all my fellow Jamie’s out there had this sang to them in the hallways in school😂loved it and sometimes not so much!!!
Crazy good in concert!! Deep hole of bangers!!🤘🔥
Especially the live version!
The Drummer is Eddy's Brother Alex Van Halen! He Always had The Most Elaborate Set of Drums , this Side of the Late, Great Neil Peart!
You should do “Runnin’ With The Devil” from the same album as this song.
Eddie started out as the drummer and Alex on guitar. In the 80’s every one I knew loved three bands: AC/DC, Pink Floyd and Van Halen
You guys should react to "When I'm Gone" by '3 Doors Down.' It's a song that they dedicated to the Men and Women in our Military. They're a GREAT Southern Rock Band that you all are missing out on!
Wolfgang Van Halen is Eddie's son & he was their new bassist when Michael Anthony left.
I love how EVH makes his guitar sound like it is crying !! RIP GOAT ….keep those Van Halen reactions coming !!
To get the Whole Van Halen Experience, you got to do "Ain't Talking Bout Love" "Running with the Devil' "Feel Your Love Tonight" ❤️❤️❤️
Feel your love tonight one of the greatest songs ever ❤
And don’t forget Atomic Punk!
Because they've been together so long they know how to vibe with each other is why it sounds so clean and precise
Finally, more Van Halen. Thanks or reacting reacting. They are a deep rabbit hole. Try Right Now, When it's Love or Why Can't this be Love. The drummer is Alex Van Halen!
Great hair band!
Michael Anthony on bass and Alex Van Halen on drums is a killer rhythm section.
I could not stand 80s VAN HALEN at all ,,, 70s VH ,,
You should really check out "Right Now" and "Why Can't This Be Love?" Both also by Van Halen but with a different lead singer - Sammy Hagar. Also an incredible vocalist.
Michael Anthony is the bass guitarist
This song is a perfect example of how Eddie was great on rhythm as well as lead. The "drummer" is only Alex Van Halen. 😊 Talented family. Happens to also be one of the flat out greatest drummers in rock who only got eclipsed because his brother is a genius. Also, can we just talk about that bass for a second?? Michael Anthony is a beast.
The guitar riff was used in Tone Loc (wild thing)
Wrong, it was the Alex Van Halen Drumroll 👈
If you haven't heard...."I'm The One"........off their 1st album, you have yet to hear VH at the top of their game.
Keep listening to that first album!! Every single song is amazing!!
Sammy Hagar's songs with the band were good too! Here are some of my favorites:
"Finish What You Started"
"Dreams"
"Right Now"
Standing on top of the world, hot summer nights, pound cake, why can’t this be love
Enjoy! 🎸
Rob has the right understanding. If Jamie wants to hear from him she'll have to wait for the 4am drunk call.
Great show as always. If you have not yet covered them, another great band from this era/genre is Night Ranger. "Don't Tell Me You Love" would be a good song to start with.
Agreed. I also like "Rumors in the Air" by Night Ranger.
@@johnscott8145 YES
David Lee Roth - vocals
Eddie Van Halen - Guitars, backing vocals
Michael Anthony - Bass, backing vocals
Alex Van Halen - Drums
If you're looking for someone new to check out give Brother Cane a listen. "Got No Shame " should pique your interest in this band. If they had been around in the 70's they would have been huge. Rock and Roll at its best.
Alabama's own!
Kind of remind me of Black Crowes.
Some of the best backing vocals ever! Michael Anthony.
