    Ice Cream Man was originally written and performed by John Brim in the 40s or 50s, can't recall. But story is that Dave was listening to a radio station somewhere in the south from his home in California, and he heard this song. Found the original, talked the band into doing it, and it's track ten on the debut album. Eddie's solo is spicy as hell on this one. One of my all time favorites from the mighty VH!😁

    • @joepegel
      @joepegel 2 года назад +8

      Brim wrote the song, and I read somewhere that he used the money he made from Van Halen's recording of his song to open a bar featuring live blues music so he could get up on stage and perform whenever he wanted.

      @joepegel 2 года назад +2

      @@chrisa4695 BBBISWN was written in 1924 by Milton Ager and Jack Yellen, one of the most successful songwriting duos of that era. They also wrote "Happy Days Are Here Again" and "Ain't She Sweet?" I don't think they were still alive when Van Halen recorded it, but if they were, they were doing alright financially.

    One of the best things about EVH's playing is totally on display here. When he breaks into the guitar solo Asia has the biggest smile on her face and as it progresses she really gets into it. How many other guitar players have that kind of impact to the listener? That's what separates Edward Van Halen from every other guitarist on the planet, His playing has a HUGE smile on its face and it makes you smile as well. Cheers.

    I'll give Dave credit for the live performances where he played a custom shaped 'Davecicle' pre-tuned guitar he only had to 'bar' straight across the frets and use a single finger to play the parts while moving to only two other positions during the intro considering he is NOT a guitar player. It worked and was typical 'Dave'. Good times!

    The Using Your Imagination part--->>> is what makes all these Van Halen songs so great because every Individual can have ther Own Take and pull from their Own personal experiences as what it means to Themselves on a Personal level, and yet Everyone can Still identify as a Group,.It's NOT easy to do and put in a Musical Context,. It's why they're the Greatest~And why they sold out Every Show They Ever Played~

    • @Itelkner
      @Itelkner 2 года назад

      The all had that swing, most rock band don't, not much anyway. The VH bros got a big dose of it from growing up with a jazz musician dad. And Dave himself can really swing on that acoustic. Like Keith Richards said, most guys can rock - few know how to roll, too. And the roll (swing) is the thing. VH could do both, as you said, in abundance.

    Van Halen 1 album was so incredible people got tattoos of the album cover...It was so different from what other bands were putting out, bands like Kiss, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, ACDC, Steely Dan, Lynard Skynard, Cheap Trick, Heart, and David Bowe, yet it wasn't so far different like The Clash, The Ramones, or Alan Parsons Project. I dare to say there wouldn't be a hair band era if not for the alteration of Rock and Roll that Van Halen put down on the world. While we all jest about the age of Hair bands, there was some great music being created and it lasted a significant amount of time to be given its due credit.

    Great video! BJ, you have a great ear for music and both of you are very good at explaining the music. “Swing” is the perfect adjective to describe this song. Eddie was the king of swing. It’s why you hardly ever hear amateur rock bands do VH songs is it’s so hard to replicate the guitar. The solos are hard to but it’s his rythem that’s so hard to replicate. I like watching you guys react to songs. Obviously you 2 are either musicians or spend a lot of time listening to music and you have an ear or taste for good music.

    Here's the thing about rock 'n' roll, especially from this era: if it sounds like they're talking about sex - THEY ARE. The metaphors that bands came up with were positively baroque; they would use ANYTHING as a way to talk about the nasty. (Except for being explicit. That was something you rarely if ever heard. Rock bands didn't talk straight out about it, because that wasn't sexy, it was raunchy, and the difference was important if you wanted to get played on the radio.) It was such fun hearing all these clever workarounds. A great time for music fans!
    (Of course, you'd occasionally get a song like Queen's _I'm in Love with My Car,_ which certainly SOUNDS dirty, but wasn't - it really was just a song about how much Roger Taylor loved his car. Poor guy has had to tell people that for years, and nobody believes him! 😂

    Three buds and I in the early 80's were cruising around and got hungry. We pulled into a Hardee's and realized between the 4 of us barley had a dollar. One friend had his guitar in the trunk and grabbed it and in we went. The shift manager asked what we wanted to order, and we told him we didn't have any money but were hungry and asked if we could play a song for some food. He agreed but said it had to be good. Long story short, we played and sang this song and each of us got a large fry!

    Awesome that you guys would choose this VH song - one of my favourites. I'd met David at a grocery store in Northern California where he'd invited all of us to his pool party up the road. Pre GPS, we'd gotten lost looking for that house party 🥺

      @@Itelkner Oh wow, between 1981* and 1988**. My 20s we motor-homed between Vancouver Island, BC Canada and Malibu, California USA every summer.
      * First USA trip - After attending 1981 "Summer Sunday" Concert
      (featuring Blue Oyster Cult / Loverboy / The Rockets / Ted Nugent / Heart)
      ** Last USA trip - I'd stumbled onto volleyball set filming the 1988 movie SIDEOUT
