This song is an example of why the David Lee Roth era Van Halen was the only one I liked. His vocals and personality add as much to the appeal of the music as EVH's guitar work. Of course, some people just don't like Roth, but I have no problem with him. Their later music was more polished but in a generic rock band way.

I read that when Van Halen was in the studio recording this song, Eddie Van Halen created the guitar solo on the spot, first take, off the top of his head and that's what you are hearing in this song and he compared it to falling down the stairs and landing on your feet.

You guys are awesome, love your takes. This is song is a traditional blues song (why you feel it's from the 50's 60's) supercharged and given high energy treatment by the Mighty Van Halen. The solo has a bunch of blues guitar standards that are just taken to another level by Eddie along with some of his own licks. Yes, you need to listen to the whole first album and then realize what was around in 1978 to see how Van Halen changed rock.

He may not have been a "man of the night" in this song, but on David Lee Roth's EP "Crazy from the Heat" he does "Just a Gigalo" (a cover of an old standard from the 1920s ... funny, i was going to just type "from the '20s" but now we have to be more specific ... its weird livin' in the future).
You should check out David Lee Roth's solo work after Van Halen because it was campy and obscure covers (like this one, which is an old blues song from the '60s) that Dave always wanted to do that really drove the conflict between him and Eddie and ultimately got him kicked out of the band, so he goes all out with this type of song (rumor is Eddie absolutely hated Icecream Man)

So I really liked your reactions to this song. So I'm going to make a suggestion here. David Lee Roth went on to have a solo carrier after Van Halen. On his first album he had a similar song to Ice Cream Man called, Just a Gigolo. So when you're thinking where you should go next, you could circle back to this one. Just a thought. 🤔🤔🤔

This is such an underrated VH song, DLR lyrics and voice are incredible and the usual EVH kick ass guitar makes this such a unique and classic tune. I remember seeing this live in 1981 as VH opened up for The Rolling Stones and DLR sitting on a stool playing this and pounding a bottle of JD. ‘What a show! They killed it that day as they usually do. Stones weren’t bad either, lol !

This song just reminded me of a movie called Crossroads with Ralph Machio, the original Karate Kid. Anyways the movie is about a kid who's a classically trained guitarist, but his passion is playing the blues and knowing all its history. He ends up helping an old bluesman escape an elderly home because he claims to have some knowledge of which I'm blank at the moment. Anyways he really wants the kid to take him to the Crossroads to make another deal with the devil. Some really good guitar playing in this movie. And you get to see Steve Vai vs the karate kid on guitars.
