I have always preferred the David Lee Roth era of Van Halen!
Of course
Agreed 🤟💯
You and everyone with taste. Van Hagar did very well tho. Same thing with AcDc, Brian Johnson made them more pop but i think Bon Scott is a legend.
Nothing wrong with Sammy.
I do not prefer it...it's the only VH I listen to.
Brad: "What's the song about?"
Lexi: "The guitar..."
She's so on point 95% of the time....God given talent. Straight, no chaser.
As a VH fan, no... but I get it. There is no wrong answer. It is art and how you interpret it. :)
exactly what came out of my mouth, she crackes me up, unfiltered uninhibited, Love that about both of them, two great observations that see from different perspectives.
That first guitar chord is the perfect embodiment of what Eddie called "the brown sound". One of the most powerful guitar sounds ever recorded.
I'd go with Tony Iommi's and or Brian May's heavy sound/s over Eddie's for sheer POWER. Eddie's is more of a big, wiry, " wompy ", grinding tone/sound....with a good sustain to it. But POWER is different.
Wasn't it some engineer who came up with "brown sound", because to him it sounded like shit?
@@DerEchteBold maybe. I never heard that story, just knew that Eddie referred to it as "the brown sound". It sounds like something an engineer would say.
@@philosopher0076 🤦♂️
@@jeffreycherep8264 the brown sound refers to the fact that Eddie used less than 120 volts to his amp. Some where around 65 volts. Gave him his signature sound.
1985 movie with a young John Cusack, Better Off Dead....theres a great scene where he is working as a fry cook making hamburgers, starts daydreaming with the hamburgers turning into David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen jamming to this song....hilarious
I grew up on that movie in the 80's. Just showed it to my kids the other day for the first time.
That scene was over the top. They even had the Shark Destroyer for hamburger Eddie. lol
My favorite album by VH. I always thought Dave's voice and Eddie's guitars worked so well together, probably why I never stuck around for the Hagar years.
But Lex is right, it's all about the guitars :D
I was 14 when I saw this live in 1980. I’ve seen the original Van Halen lineup about 15 times. Great song and reaction. You two are fun to watch listen to my kind of music. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Seen Van Halen 6 times, so glad I saw them again in 2015 in Toronto, didn't think it would be the last, RIP my hero forever lasting... Eddie. Yea these are great it feels like I'm watching a VH video again, for the first time. Merry Christmas.
Saw Rochester ny date
Merry Christmas to you too!
Did Roth sing in key once in 15 shows? Did he tell the same rehearsed jokes at every show? What is your opinion of the assless chaps?
Dave is the King !!!
Man Van Halen were kickin' it back in the day! They rolled out three badass albums in a row, right off the bat. I grew up on this stuff. Love the reaction, y'all.
Three? I figure it was six. For me the first 6 albums were all bangers from beginning to end!
“Better Off Dead” … the cafe kitchen claymation scene.
"$2 Dollars" LOL
Beat me to it
that David Lee Roth singing hamburger pattie is STILL to this day amongst my personal top 5 funniest scenes in movies I've seen... it's hilarious!
Yes. Just yes.
We yell "I want my 2 dollars" round my house at least once a week still. Loved that movie.
Love how Brad cracks up when Dave says "yeah, that's it, a little more to the right". Every dude knows what he's talking about lol
Lex is dead on - VH is ALL ABOUT EDDIE! "It's all about the guitar" is classic. Also, remember this is at least a DECADE before Mariah, so Mariah was trying to imitate David Lee Roth with HER screams. LOL.
Dave has always said that he got the “scream” from the Ohio Players.
That DLR swagger was what brought out Eddie’s guitar. The other singers sounded liked bland office art
God I love how you’re getting into this old classic Van Halen. This shit makes my day. That whole album is fantastic! Great songs on it. If you love guitar you’re gonna love this whole album
Your discussion about custard pie is hysterical. Probably the most I've seen two people discuss custard pie in a video🎸🍰🤣
Anybody else think of the iconic scene in "Better Off Dead" to this song? I can't hear it without thinking of this movie! 🤣🤣🤣
Edit: I just saw it in the thumbnail!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nailed it!
And then.... You see Brad get it!! The smile takes over and you know where the line running up her stocking takes all of us!! Cause we ALL WANT SOME!!!
OMG! I barely remember this song in concert, but....VH always played venues and their speakers (Marshall Stacks) went all the way up to the ceiling. The intro to this was crazy good! Bassist Michael Anthony heaved his bass over his shoulders and used it like he was shooting a bazooka while he ran around the stage, sliding his fingers up the strings.
Clearly, Brad KNEW what everyone Wanted SOME of after the Vocal Interlude after the 2nd solo. lolololol
The best of all time. Their music got me through my teens and life at that time. RIP Mr. Edward Van Halen. The true GOAT of the guitar! 🤩
Class of ‘85 probably!
“ a little more to the right…” big grin. He gets it
Thanks for reacting to this one, a great Van Halen selection... one of the coolest intros in rock... and really shows off a lot of Eddie's best tricks.
David Lee Roth jumbled his lines in that second verse, but they said screw it, and went with it anyway! Music, man! VH recorded these albums in about a week back in those days! This one was always a crowd favorite.
"I've seen a lot of people lookin for a moonbeam." What's jumbled about it?
In the 80s I knew a band that was playing this song and the singer couldn't figure out that line. He asked everybody to listen to it but none of us could figure it out. He ended up just kind of mumbling the line.
I’m sick of people chasing after a moonbeam 😂
VAN HALEN... not Van Hagar! LOL!! Best of the 80's rock bands IMO!
I remember reading an article (probably in Circus, Creem, or Hit Parader) where the writer compared Van Halen to Kiss. He said that a Kiss concert was well rehearsed with every note, lyric, and movement pre-planned and choreographed. Van Halen on the other hand was more free form like a jazz band. They played and did what they felt in the moment.
I like how Brads face lit up after the high heels bit!
Song was featured in the movie "Better Off Dead"...awesome tune
You guys have to do 'Unchained' next. Trust me on this. Maybe the best riff ever!
Come on Dave, give me a break.
@@publicanimal O.K…..one break, comin’ up!
DOA also
I’d put mean street in there too
Yes. Mean Street is VH best riff IMO
Dude it's general "everybody want's some"..."everybody NEEDS some", guys it's INTERCOURSE! I love you guys, you've never heard the song before, I understand, I've been a Van Halen fanatic my whole life and I love your reaction to these videos ( especially to the live stuff) because I've seen all this stuff eleventy million times. So glad your becoming fans, and enjoying what greatest rock guitarist left us.. a symphony of sound, that will endure time. Thanks so much, this is fun. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you both.
INTERCOURSE????? LMFAO!!!! It's called FUCKING!!! INTERCOURSE?????? UFB!!!!!
@@POWER-LINKS Hey, he could have written sexual intercourse hahahaha.
subways...the conductor don't like it... people looking for moonbeams yeah, yeah stand in line, lost in the jet stream (commercial class)... liking the lines on the backs of the stockings...I can go on and on, but this is clearly about everybody wanting anal sex and most people not being able to get it....gotta love the 80's
Look, I'll pay you for it, wtf...
What do you think he meant by custard pie?
You need to do Romeo Delight from the same album. Will blow your headphones off.
Awesome guitar riff. Fantastic
"A little more to the right..." broke Brad into his big grin. Leave it to David Lee Roth!
This song was featured in an EPIC SCENE from the movie Better Off Dead, starring John Cusack.
"IT'S ALIVE!!!!"
"What's this song about?" "The guitar." She's goood.
My first concert other than seeing my dad (Steppenwolf) was 9th grade in NM in 1979/80 with my mom in the second to last row - weed in the air all around us, DLR jumping off huge amp stacks with his PINT of JD doing kicks in the air - bad ass!!! To me VH up to Mean Streets was their peak, some bands peak early VH and for sure Aerosmith fall into that category for me. Soft ballads from Aerosmith although quality were NOT what I wanted from them, songs like Toys in the attic were what I loved!
In reality, most bands do not have several top selling albums with every song on each album being great songs. A lot of bands fade out after one or two albums if they are lucky. Both those bands kept it going into their fourth albums and one could say didn't hit their peak until then. Toys and Rocks for Aerosmith and just about everything for Van Halen. They had been around the scene for years before they hit it big and stayed there. Both bands got bigger.
So you saw Steppenwolf with your Dad? or is your Dad… cause that’d be awesome 😎
@@baileybowman2449 my dad played bass from 1970-76 and I saw them as a kid at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood and Blaisdell in Oahu
@@Prone2Thrill Cool! George Biondo, right?
David Lee Roth had a great voice for the original Van Halen that was a signature sound of the band. Fun band to listen to and a fantastic musicianship of the entire band and guitar work and drums of the Van Halen Brothers along with Michael Anthony on bass. Yes this was only a three piece band with a solid raspy high pitch singer that made the songs sound huge.
Totally written for the live show- got the audience sing along, call and response, and the section for Dave to rap to the audience- built for the live show.
It kicks ass every time you listen.
My favorite band of all time. First concert I went to was at Madison Square Garden watching VH during the Diver Down tour. Miss you EVH🤘
I will forever love this tune....Eddie Rips!!! Back in Study hall the Teacher used to let me play Van Halen in the class softly....that was awesome.... cassette player back then.
I love seeing other people's reactions from the music I grew up with. You two gave it an honest listen, and seemed to enjoy it. Thanks for that.
Hey you two. Love your reaction. MANY of VH's songs were about getting some or wanting/drooling over some.
Some other great songs from their early career are:
Janey's Crying
Running With the Devil
Ain't Talking About Love
All of a sudden, Brad started to smile, He knew what everybody wants some of!
Yes thats all David on those crazy vocals and yes Dave use to have that amazing whistle register.
The fact isn't so surprising when one realizes that, in addition to his tremendous personality, the Van Halen frontman possesses a vocal range of 5 octaves and 3 notes (ranging from E1 to A6), which makes him the most versatile old-school hard rock singer. Back in his day that is.
Yes, David was awesome back in the day. No question. 25 years later, Chris Cornell showed us the same kind of range…..
What?? Sorry but Roth couldn't sing a lick and had NO range. I'd dare say he barely even had an octave range of actual singing. He talked his way through over half of their catalogue and crooned almost all the rest. He couldn't carry a tune or sing on key to save his life. The only thing he ever did high was his little silly vocal scream, which any tenor can do but it was his " thing ". He couldn't sing that high in a billion years and never did. Him chirping out a screamy, " Oww! " here and there is NOT singing in any way. His whole success was due to ( Eddy's playing really! ) his character, the character he played. His charisma, silly corny humor and over dramatic comedy and sexy guy style and wacky clothes and goofy facial expressions made him popular. NOT any singing voice nor singing skills. And honestly, he would not have had any success without Eddy and Alex's playing and Eddy's composing of songs. But let's be clear, the guy couldn't SING to save his life, had zero vibrato nor any other true skills in singing and did NOT have anything close to a 5 octave range. Nah. And Roth couldn't shine Cornell's shoes when it came to singing voice or singing skills. Night and day.
@@philosopher0076 Correct about the range, but wrong in so many other ways. His delivery on those '78-'84 albums, and his first couple of solo records in soooo good. His timing, lyrical savvy, and sound (including the screams, which if more people could do, you would have heard it) was the envy of practically every wanna be, and pretty much everybody wanted to be DLR in that time period.
All of his vocals were cleaned up in the studio live he was always off and never had more than a two octave range at best he fit the band perfectly and was extremely charismatic
5 octaves??? Sure. I don't think yelps and screams qualify.
I love the way the line runs up the back of your stockings
Hey Brad and Lex... just wanted to say "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year"... looking forward to another year of your reaction videos. Take care.
Merry Christmas!!! 🎄
The scene in Better off Dead where this song is featured is one of my favorite child hood memories. :)
Van Halen with David Lee Roth created some great songs, I so miss those days.
I love Brad's expression at "moonbeam".
David Lee Roth belts out these signature screams in most of the songs he recorded with Van Halen.
Eddie Van Halen with his great grinding chords! Great reaction! I think we know what the song is about...hint, hint, wink, wink. It's still David Lee Roth singing. This is one of their earlier songs that speak to how much variety is contained in their playlist.
You two are a riot. 😂😂😂
I figured I'd just send this message on the latest video you guys posted . Brad & Lex , you guys are a joy to watch all year long . Right now this country need more of what you guys are doing . Being open to things that may be out of your normal comfort zone , and doing it with such joy . I look forward to seeing what's new every day . You never fail to bring a smile to my face . I wish you and all B & L fans a merry Christmas and the happiest of new years!!
For me, Van Halen isn't Van Halen without David Lee Roth.
And yeah, you could pick any song off their very first album and it would be iconic. And probably fun to react to and probably a hit at the time on the radio. They took this nation by storm when they exploded.
Brad your face when Dave goes a little more to the right, and fyi les is funny she kills me!🤣😂😂
Love how yall be rocking side to side lol. Metal is more of a back and forth with head bang but i start mimicking yall when i watch.
My favorite VH song, the overall groove an vocals is great. I would listen to this getting ready to go out.
It's self explanatory 🤣🤣🤣
"Some what?"
LOL.
Love you guys.
My take. The "some" hes talking about I believe is whatever you may desire. He's not too specific other than getting romantic on the subway line which doesn't exclude whatever appeals to you. It could be Eddie's guitar or love, alcohol, drugs, you name it. You do a great job on these classics. Fan of EVH for 42 years. May he rest in peace. Merry Christmas and a happy new year. Subscriber 4life lol can't wait for the next one. Keep em coming.
Agree. It isn't necessarily sex focused. I've always thought the closing utterance of "Look, I'll pay ya for it...wtf..." was referencing drugs. Dave sounds "annoyed," like someone offered to get him high but is being chincy with it instead of just having a good time, which they probably encountered alot as rock stars going from town to town, trying to get a high whenever they could, depending on fans & other complete strangers to supply their high for them. It's about whatever that thing is that you want the most, at any given moment, imo.
I really love watching you guys reacting to every (almost! I hope) Van Halen song!! Keep it up, Brad and Lex! Recently discovered your channel and now is between my favorites!
In case you haven't figured it out yet, Van Halen in the DLR days was all about kick ass guitar, partying and having a great time! David Lee Roth had a very unique style that fit the band perfectly and was underrated as a vocalist. Best front man of all time...
It certainly wasn't about writing good and meaningful lyrics. lol
Very good, but best of all time.......no.
Dave is definitely better than Sammy. But the best of all time? Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford and Ozzy are way better than dave. They all had way longer careers. And put out more and better music than DLR or Sammy was capable of. Im a big VH fan. But im also realistic.
First thing the kid said was "THEIR GUITAR" ! EPIC!
I liked this song and liked it again in the classic movie Better Off Dead, and still like it in 2022.
OMG. LOVE the "Custard Pie"/LZ reference 🤣
When he was talking about the stockings and the high heals too I noticed Brad started laughing. It was like, oh. I get it now! And for a moment I thought he wanted some too.
Without the lyric video, we would have never known that "Everybody wants some". Thank God we got that cleared up.
I listened to this song and album so much as a kid I'd forgotten how fun a song this is.
Getting it on my playlist for the new year.
I've simply been anxiously waiting for this.
Merry Christmas too me.
This song was used in the movie Better off dead staring John Cusack. It's a must watch. And a lot of good 80s music.
You need to delve deeper than the radio hits. I say it all the time..Atomic Punk, Outta Love, Light Up the Sky, On Fire, Romeo Delight. Any VH fan would agree with me
There was a claymation scene in the movie "Better Off Dead" with this song. I can't hear it without thinking about that...
Think this is the first time I saw Brad move. Keep Rockin Brad!
The guitar. 🤣
Van Halen from 77 to 83 was like nothing else.
Alex Van Halen is such an underrated drummer! In any other band he’d be getting the most ink but in Van Halen he never makes it on any Top 10 drummer lists!
Sorry your a bit wrong here. Back in the eighties when Eddy was winning best guitar player of the year on several rock magazines, Alex was often getting 2nd place best drummer behind late John Bonham. So that made him Best Drummer Alive ok. And Dave was getting best frontman rock scene. Alex and VH were never underrated. Best band ever.
I love Van Halen! I saw this concert, it was amazing!
If you went to a Van Halen concert in the 80's every girl was wearing high heels will black stocking with a line up the back.
Women and Children First is my favorite Van Halen album.
This, And the Cradle Will Rock, Loss of Control, Take Your Whiskey Home, Tora, Tora!, Fools, Could This Be Magic. This is just one banging album.
Couch gang, you always make smile. Thank you.
React to MORE Van Halen songs...the CLASSIC 1977-1984 version that is!
I saw Van Halen several times in the late 70s and early 80d in Philly, my high school days. New sound new guitar riffs awesome.
Still mad at myself for not seeing them live during their first two albums. Friends did and told stories of DLR and the crowd not getting along at times (stuff being thrown at him, etc.) but all the while EVH (Alex and Michael too) doing their thing, keeping it going. Real unscripted Rock and Roll dammit!
You guys miss so much when you don’t watch the official videos. You see them, learn more about their personalities, and their musicianship. That is, if it’s a performance video.
Brad & Lex kick NALGAS !!!!!!
Front row 4 times!! THE MIGHT VAN HALEN!!
Funny to hear someone debate what Dave means by everybody wants some. 😂
“This is a very strange song” - Lex.
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!! 😆
My absolute favorite van Halen song.
Dreams, Right Now and Panama! Best guitarist ever!
Ok brad that big grin got me rolling lol. Y’all know what’s up
NOW YOU'RE TALKIN 🎶🎵🎸🥁🎙👍🤜
I like the way the line runs up your stocking
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for you Mr. Brad and Mrs Lex.
Merry Christmas Domingos!!!
Listen to "Jaime's Crying" . Such a great song
David Lee Roth and Alex Van Halen the drummer used to go on jungle escapades together they would go out into the jungles and they would meet tribal people and this is how this beat came along the story by David Lee Roth
Yes....Jungle Studs
They are buck dancers extraordinaire.
The movie Better off dead was one of the greatest 80’s movies!! Haha
I seen the exact second Brad finally figured it out !!! Nice 👍 👍 stay safe 🙏 👍 👌
Very entertaining reaction to my favorite band!
I love when Brad laughs at "Yeah that's it - a little more to the right..." which confirms it's about custard pie. lol
It's also about cocaine too. Listen to it again. Cocaine and custard pie.
What is rock generally about? What everyone wants. That's it.
In this episode of Brad & Lex, inquisitive "sways" and "bops" begin once the ominous bassline and drums are introduced seemingly blinding the cooky couple on whats to come as Brad seems to play along by showing the viewers his signature "side to side sway" as Lex is a bit more free to openly display her "jam bop".
David Lee has always had THEE best screams.
BRAD & LEX .
Merry Christmas and I wish Yous the Best of Holidays. I hope You two recieve as much joy and happiness as You Two have given Me. Thank You Both so much. Love and Respect always.
