BG Music:
"His folks are overjoyed." Just Dave being sarcastic about the young kid having no job. Basically he's saying his parents are pissed off and disappointed with their son's situation. Great song, great album, great reaction. ROCK ON! 🔥🔥
That line should need no explanation
@@mikenastasi8927 exactly! Pure sarcasm & they were confused by it😖
Yeah by this point in the song, the parents have given up. This kid is just a gonna do his own thing....the cradle will rock. I remember when this album came out and the song could have been written about half my neighborhood.
@@gizzy2403
I like them and they're likeable but some of the things they say...
@@mikenastasi8927 it's not their fault they are products of public schools and the Luciferian agenda. Once you destroy the language you destroy the society.
Roth era VH had so much attitude.
So much swagger and edginess.
Women and children first is an underrated album
The first three VH albums will always be my favorite VH albums.
Hell yeah I love it!!! I like the song Mean Street
Damn right. Was the first one I've heard and it might be my favorite.
Had it 🤘
Romeo Delight is in my top 5 VH tunes
"In A Simple Rhyme" off this album is one of my favorite Van Halen jams that doesn't get talked about much.
Heck yeah brother! Such an underrated song from them. You're a true fan if you know that one. After Edward passed this is the song I picked to cover with my son. He's a huge Diamond Dave era VH too. He's done a few covers of them. Here is our version of In a Simple Rhyme. The vocals and the harmonies were hard to do right. The singer Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys) did a great job on a tough song. This is one of my favorite Michael Anthony bass lines too. He's such an underrated player. ruclips.net/video/p5FdpegoL0E/видео.html
I agree
My favorite.
Eddie Trunk cites that one as one of his top 5 VH songs.
Killer song!! I love old school Van Halen!!!
RIP Eddie
Please do “Little Guitars“ next. It’s such a great song.
Sail away with someone's daughter.😏
@@BROU-bb2uc that is women and children first. Awesome song and album.
@@BROU-bb2uc
Could this be Magic 😂
🎶 🎤An' I see lonely ships upon the water
Better save the women and children first
Sail away with someone's daughter
Better save the women and children first, yes, ah 🎼🎵
Or did you just mean the album it was on?
@@jarrodtorries1905
Actually it’s “Could this be Magic”! Right?
Now I need to look it up. LoL 😂
Old school...NOTHIN' like it! 🤘🏻😃
This was produced during Van Halens golden days...1st 4 albums are some of the best Rock n Roll ever recorded....
This song is a banger! Dave talks about how the new generation is taking little after the previous one, and doing things their own way, some good some bad. Women and Children First is underrated.
Van Halen had something many other bands didn't, and that something was called Swing!
“Have you seen juniors grades”? That cracks me up! That album cover is very cool! Thanks folks!
Eddie Van Halen. RIP our friend. You and your grin, cig and style.
Old school Van Halen....there is no match to their greatness!!! RIP EVH
Listening in basement with friends on cassette (first song we heard of Van Halen). We all felt like.... "this band is going to be MASSIVE"💥
I can remember being at keggar parties with blazing bon fires in the middle of the desert in the summer nights...and Van Halen cranked to 10 on all of our car stereo's...those were the 80's
Righto, Joe .The good ole' days ..VH was a great ,fun band, for sure
This was the first Van Halen song I heard going into high school when I realized there were bands other than KISS.
Fun fact is that the main instrument in this song is NOT a guitar. It's a Fender Rhodes electric piano run through a guitar amplifier.
Yeah, you could tell it was Eddie on guitar the second the short solo started. Eddie's guitar playing is instantly recognizable. He literally has his own tone and sound. Even when he was young in a cover band he said he still sounded like himself and couldn't sound like other players. He played guitar in Michael Jackson's Beat it. He did it for free and asked to not be credited so the other guys in VH wouldn't find out and be pissed.. Fooled absolutely no one.
You can hear the James Brown funk in his screams.
Ahhh, to be 20 in 1980. I want to thank my parents for conceiving me in June, 1959!
Ditto-August 1959 for me!
So much music going on in this song it's mindblowing
That solo is such a tease.
I recall buying this album on vinyl....and hearing the intro; playing it over and over.... What. A. Sound!!!! So cool. Van Halen status catapulted!!! So fun...and humorous....great cranckable rock .
A lot of people think Jump was the first VH track to feature keyboards, but this one has electric piano all over it. Eddie played a Wurlitzer throught his Marshall stack.
Michael played the Wurli live, using a Rhodes KeyBass for his bass part.
I knew that somebody would know this and bring it up. Good on you Jason!! When I first learned that I went back to listen to this song and had to really focus to hear it. Now I can't not hear it!
My favorite Van Halen song from my favorite VH album. I love how it gets in your face right off the line.
The riff is actually a keyboard run through a Marshall half stack
Yes, finally, someone reacted to this killer tune!
This is the song (and not just this song, VH has more of them from DLR) and the reason some people just like VH with Dave better than Sammy. With Dave they had a toughness to them. In your face, taking names and kickin' a$$ type of attitude.
Yup, Dave era had that rowdy, wild and out of control vibe happening. With Van Hagar it became a kinder, gentler, more mature thing. Personally i prefer the rowdiness of the Dave era.
fukn A. With Hagar, it was "When it's Love" and with DLR, he "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," to paraphrase how DLR put it in an interview once. There was a distinct difference - night and day.
Takes me back to my high school days back in the late 70s. Driving around listening to this on my 8 track player.
You have to understand how original the things Eddie was doing on his guitar. He developed the hammer on hammer off technique which was completely new to rock. Every VH album that came out, had guitarists saying 'how does he do that?' Also the song say "his folks ARENT overjoyed"
Regardless of what the lyrics say when you look them up, I have always heard "His folks aren't overjoyed." DLR was always changing the lyrics when he got in the booth to record, because of his hard partying, or to piss off Eddie. And George Lynch has said that watching EVH play at gigs his band opened at is what made him really buckle down on HIS own playing. Van Halen was my first concert, and I'm very happy it was. So many great concerts in the 80s due to everyone stepping up their game to reach the same heights, or above, as Van Halen! 🤘💖
@@ladyevil64 Being a young adult in the 80's was amazing. I might be getting older, but I got to see all the cool bands.
One of their first songs that made Van Halen Van Halen along with running with the devil and Jamie‘s crying🎺🧨🎸💣🥁
LOVED Van Halen as a teen
Now this Van Halen back when. Women and children was a better album than it got credit for. Enjoying that smile on Lex's face and Brad's laugh.
"I don't get no *responsibility* vibes."
This is what we come for!
Memories of seeing them on this tour as a freshman in high school. Good times. Too good, actually.
Gotta love DLR VH!!! As a Dad of four sons, and a son myself , obviously, the rebellion sang of in this song boomerangs back on ya’, better believe it! All rebel’s offspring are payback!😎
It was sarcasm when he said his parents are over joyed
"Take your whiskey home" should be your next Van Halen jam.
I saw VH on the tour supporting this album. Great band!
That screaming instrumental sound at start and throughout was from a keyboard combined w/ a sound filter from a unit called a flanger. It's the first VH song w/ any keyboard in it, tho it didn't sound like one.
In a Simple Rhyme and Fools are 2 of my favorite songs on this album
So happy this song finally got some love! One of the first VH songs I ever heard and still one of my favorites.
Just a weird aside, Van Halen was a fixture at roller rinks, which usually didn’t play much rock music. 🖖🏼
Great song, for me this was the original Van Halen song the first one I heard back in the beginning, they were great
"Finish What You Started" sounds like this too. It was a song VH did for Valerie Bertinelli's TV show. (If I remember correctly).
"His folks are overjoyed" was sarcasm.
“His folks were overjoyed” was sarcasm
The first time I ever saw Van Halen was on this tour in Spring of 80 at the Broome County Arena in Binghamton NY. I was a Junior in High School. Fun times.
Hey guys what's up! Imagine hearing this in eighth grade. First time I heard this on the radio it blew my mind. Van Halen rocks! You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
Hey, just imagine hearing Eruption for the very first time right when the album came out in 1978. Disco was all the rage, and we hated disco. I was in a friend’s basement and he told me I had to hear this guy. I don’t know how many times we played eruption over and over again just trying to figure out what he was doing. This was the very first time the world had ever heard of Van Halen. There was no one to compare it to. This was all over the radio.
Hey what's up brother! I do remember hearing eruption for the first time. me and my friend we're listening to Ted Nugent, Angus Young, and all the other Top guitar players of the time. It was seventh grade some kid brought a cassette to school and said man you guys got to hear this. We listen to the whole album all the way through and I was so blown away I didn't know what to think. I knew at that moment the music had changed. Eddie Van Halen became my favorite in one second. I could not believe what I was hearing. You rock! God bless you! Peace!
Possibly the greatest quote ever in regards to DLR from Lexi "I don't get any responsibility vibes". Kinda sums up Dave!
Lex, when Dave said "His folks are overjoyed.", he was being sarcastic.
His folks are overjoyed Was a sarcastic statement You can tell in his voice
This tour was my first VH show. I remember Michael Anthony playing the keyboards for this.
I had all of van halen's cassette tapes in a box holder. This was one of them that I had on cassette. Bought it before I could drive so I walked to the record store from my Grandma's apartment in Gulfport Mississippi. Still playing van halen songs decades later. Great song. Diver Down would have to be one of my favorite albums of the Roth era. Little Guitars and Big Bad Bill and the Full Bug. I think the Full Bug is one of thier hardest hitting songs. It's a banger for sure.
When he says "his folks are overjoyed" he is being sarcastic. It is about how parents have to deal with rebellious teens that they can't control.
A bunch of us skipped school and bought this album when brand new will never forget that day 😎
Classic rock at it Best
There was a poster in the late 70's with Eddie Van Halen pointing and the caption read "have you seen Jr 's grades???"
I lived in the middle of nowhere Texas when I was a teen, and I used to put this album on the stereo, patched into my full stack guitar amp (played along with it), and my neighbors 5 miles away used to here me cranking this, Jimi Hendrix, & Led Zeppelin! ;-) hehe... I was a bad, bad, boy....hehe, & high as a kite and thanks to my Alcoholic father, never had a shortage of Jack Daniels on hand!
Thanks for doing this, it's one of my favorite Van Halen songs!! They have so much great music, keep on discovering more Van Halen. Also Eddie's son, Wolfgang, is an incredible vocalist/multi-instrumentalist. His first album was great, working on the second. The band is called Mammoth WVH. Check out ," Don't Back Down", it totally rocks & the video is amazing. Their first tour was with Guns N Roses, not bad for the first time. He was the bassist for Van Halen since he was 16 yrs old.
The cradle will rock 👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥✨✨✨🔥🔥😈
Van Halen is the best-any version #RIP EVH🤘🖖✌️🎸🎸🎸🥁🎤
The lyric about his parents being over joyed was sarcasim
The intro and the rest of the song is done on a Wurlitzer electric piano through a distortion pedal (minus the guitar solo).
Many of us asked one another, back in the day, with great relish, "Have you seen Junior's GRADES......???"
He was being facetious about his folks being "overjoyed." He's really saying that they're disappointed with the way their kid is growing up.. hanging out with the wrong crowd, staying out for days at a time, bad grades.. probly failing, no job.. Wouldn't you be overjoyed too?? loll
Edit: Check out *Take Your Whiskey Home* from the same record. That's a great tune..
I think the sitcom song you're thinking of is the theme to Sanford and Son. There is some shared melody there, nice catch (if I'm right in thinking that's what you were referring to)! Sanford and son came out a few years before Van Halen, so maybe the theme was just stuck in their head while they were writing, lol.
Saw em with David at MSG in 84. Drove down from Vermont! Great show
Awesome Brad & Lex rocks the cradle !!!!
whoa....look at that collar!!! This changes everything!!
This is a song that should be about today's younger generation
Ohhhhh & Michael Anthony playing that bass
So damn solid highly underrated & overlooked
I still want them to hear the song, Sinner's Swing!!
One of the best early VH songs.
Lex, the lyrics,...it's called sarcasm...
His folks are overjoyed was sarcasm.🤘😎🤘
The line "his folks are overjoyed" is sarcasm.
Same album, "Take Your Whiskey Home"... Long lost radio play! Ed's intro guitar work is just "spicey."
Somebody mistyped that, AREN'T overjoyed.
loll @Lex doing the DLR *howl!*
David Lee Roth - Van Halen is my favorite too. When I was a teenager, I was upset by the band breaking up and joining with Sammy Hagar. I feel like I had two bands I liked that turned into one band.
My mom always called them Van Hagar when they were with Sammy Hagar
Sammy is a great guitar player in his own right and was wasted in VH.
His parents are overjoyed was sarcasm
I collected vinyl in the 80's. I was a die hard fan of Van Halen until OU812, and you better believe i thrashed this album
This was the first guitar rock song I can remember blasting my radio when it came on playing air guitar in the mirror. No MTV just mag pix knew EVH was iconic.
I was able to get to the Base 'library' in boot camp to hear this when it released! Ain't missing no VH!
one of the sickest intros ever
Now there’s some Rock and Roll for ya.
One of favorite Van Halen songs. Have you seen junior's grades??
So weird to hear people not know who van halejn is but it’s great to see it. I was a teenager in the 70’sand into the 80’s and seeing them live was the best shows and best parties. Rock on 🤘🏻
Great album
I love love love that collar...
A great early Van Halen song. There's a video on RUclips that someone made using the audio of this song and video clips of the adult "actress" Maria Ryabushkina, which makes it very difficult to concentrate on the intricacies of their recorded performance. 😲🤣
The parents are overjoyed lyric was sarcasm. Oh, someone else already pointed that out.
David Lee Roth is a character, and Lex, you are the David Lee Roth of RUclips. You make everything more exciting. Rock on girl, because we love you.
Fantastic album! Great track - I think he actually sings "His folks aren't overjoyed!"
No one really knows the answer for sure. Except for Roth. And, even that might change, depending on his mood.
You would be correct.
I can't say anything bad about VH with Dave. No bad album, or song. My favorite line from this song is "have you seen juniors grades" I think my grades and parents have a lot to do with that. lol.
My favorite VH album
I saw this concert when this album came out. These guys rocked!
Lex, the overjoyed line is sarcasm.
This is Old School Van Halen, which is IMO the Best, but Love All of Van Halen!!!
His folks are overjoyed=sarcasm
How do you not hear the sarcasm of disappointed parents???
agreed
'his folks aren't overjoyed' is what he actually says
