      In a different, heavier way right up there with Boston as a great debut. I was fourteen when this came out and into Zeppelin, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Clapton etc. and my head exploded. My buddy and I played the LP (yes, vinyl) over and over again and were just speechless. It's because of this album and Eddie that I learned to play guitar and still play to this day.

    I love how you said," are you sure homies not black" back in the 60's Dave was in the segregated school program it was the 60's he said he went to a predominantly Hispanic/ African American school being a Jewish kid that he was he was around a lot of African American kids in school and Dave has said before in interviews how he loved James Brown, little Richard, motown he loves all that super soulful music. We are products of our environments. Dave was a product of his environment. Mix that with the Van Halen brothers and magical music making occurs. Love your reviews mugs keep up the good work. Really enjoying your happy energy and love for music especially Van Halen ❤

    FYI: “Ice Cream Man” is a cover of an old blues tune. Van Halen’s version stays true to the original in the beginning, but definitely puts their own mark on the song before it is over!!!

  • @thothemron7912
    @thothemron7912 4 месяца назад +9

    One of my favorites from Van Halen where Eddie's obvious qualities as a melodist literally burst through the speakers and where the sweetness of Dave's crooner voice, after surprising you after the initial fury, grabs your heart and guts . For me the real Van Halen is the era of David Lee Roth, "Diamond Dave" baby, because it is the original formation, with the initial idea of this fusion, this perfect alchemy between Dave and Eddie: Diamond Dave brought his soul, funk, jazz, crooner, rhythm n' blues influences in his suitcases and his voice, his swag, Eddie has classical training, hard rock and blues as well and of course his creative genius which will revolutionize the way to consider the guitar. Mick and Alex's rhythm section is amazing and too often forgotten. Eddie and Dave happily rely on them to be able to give their best and I don't forget a special mention for the choirs which are among the most beautiful in the history of rock. The mixture of these universes gives us a unique emotion in the landscape of the late 70s then dominated by disco and punk. The big names in rock at the time are moribund or almost (Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple) and VH is a rock kick in the gums and an uninterrupted feast of emotions from start to finish. Until 84 and the last album with Roth, VH will have enchanted the musical landscape and dragged in its wake (with the more classic Aerosmith) thousands of groups who wanted to resemble them in this post-adolescent energy and much deeper than what you can feel it at first contact. Van Hagar was much more mainstream, more A.O.R with his qualities and faults. I don't like the war that we read everywhere in the media with the comparisons. This is only my opinion but VH, both in sound, compositions, inventive genius, alchemy, attitude and rock poetry, will have reached its peak with Diamond Dave. Amen.

    This song holds a lot of emotions for me. At 16, In 1982 I saw Van Halen in concert .. second row they were at their prime. I was with my then boyfriend and my best friend, and she was dating my boyfriend best friend. His name was Larry. He loved Van Halen to to core. In 1997, he was 32 years old and got in a bar fight defending a girl he didn't know from a guy that was begin violent towards a girl. The guy went to his car and retrieved a tire iron and beat Larry into a coma. Larry died a few days later. Every time I hear Little Dreamer I feel Larry close by, and see him smiling and singing it. This was his all time favorite Van Halen song. Thank you. (Note to Larry, I hope you
    enjoyed this reaction as much as I did. I thought about you the entire reaction. In my mind I was back at 1982).

    Yes. You DO need that in your life. Ladies and Gentleman, do you all remember when YOU were "Van Halenized?" I sure do. It was 1978 (playing pool with a high school buddy in his basement-- parents weren't home from work yet and we CRANKED the volume to Spinal Tap 11) and it started with THIS album---- just like everyone else on planet Earth that felt the Van Halen Invasion and all the "wtf is THAT(;s)??!!!" that came along with it. We miss you very much, Mr. Edward Van Halen. May you shred in peace.

    This is a great song. I’ve always taken the lyrics as someone who’s different,goes out on whim against the grain and despite being criticized, in the end they turn it to gold. Maybe I’m off a little bit but this song has always held a special place in my heart. “Then they went and voted you least likely to succeed” “but you armed with all you need” my favorite part. The rythem guitar on this track is signature Eddie, it’s what sets him apart from all the greats and gives him that little bit of edge over them. That swing groove that only he can do. Lots of people play fast, lots can bend a note and make it hang out there for a while but no one has that swing mixed in there while he’s doing the other stuff. It’s why most people can’t pull off covering their music. A great example is the intro to “ hangem high” off Diver Down. You should really check that song out after you’re through with this album. I’ve heard lots of guitarist say it’s impossible to replicate it. Great reaction to this song. Thanks again for doing this album. One of the greatest debut albums in rock history.

    When people talk about greatest guitarist, I always say, just in sheer volume, EVH has everyone beat. You can discuss technique and preferred style. Although I understand that SRV and Hendrix were not making music as long as VH and that isn't really their fault, we need to consider just how many riffs, solos and music this man composed. Then consider how every one of those compositions shine in their own way, yet scream Van Halen and well...you know... 🐐

    If you think about it, when was the first rap album Sugarhill gang?
    I believe that was 1979. This album was recorded from songs that Van Halen had been playing live since 1974 this pre-dates rap by half of a decade woke and a few other rappers sampled songs off this album Jamie’s crying and there’s another one I can’t think of the name of it, but Van Halen has been sampled since the beginning of rap .
