Hey Mugs, on behalf of millions of dedicated Van Halen fans, we say “welcome to the family”. Critics dismissed VH as a “party band” but we say hell yes, let’s party!
We the people have always recognized and appreciated what Van Halen was doing: bringing us together in the name of music and in the spirit of Rock n Roll.
"Thug Rock" -DLR (1983).
Whalen Fuc$ing Halen 🙌🔥🔥
The only party worth being at👊🏽⚡️
The Mighty Van Fuckin' Halen!
I recommend you see the live version .
One of the most underrated songs of their career. Love this.
Best supporting vocals in the business.
queen were no slouches
Hear hear!
I was 14 in 1980 when I heard the first Van Halen record . Till this day I like music that knocks me out of my chair .I haven't heard music like that since 1990 . After that the cellphone and the internet stripped everyone of creativity and individualality .
Fair Warning sounds still so fresh after all these years. Its crazy.
Couldn’t agree more. This song still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
Every song off the first 4 albums does too, IMO. Even the original songs off Diver Down. Every one of their songs are unique in their own way and still sounds fresh today. It's hard to date them if you've never heard of them. Awhile back I put on "Woman in Love" for my mom and she thought it sounded like a 60's Motown era song.
You are adding quality to your life listening to this album, every time
This is one of my favorite Van Halen songs of all time
It’s my most played album of all time. Absolutely a masterpiece
King Edward is my all time favorite guitar player, period.
You are treating yourself to the greatest American Rock Band of all time, the Mighty Van Halen! and you can’t run out of great material with this incredible band because they have so many amazing songs. It’s a gift listening to them and I’m glad you are enjoying them also. I love your expression and your take about what you are listening to.👍
The intro is the epitome of the Van Halen "Brown Sound"!
I have listened to Hear About It Later a thousand times and I still say WOW! Love this song so much!!!
Mugs, Great reaction as always! 👍👍😎
Hear about it later is in a class by itself ❤️❤️❤️
Great reaction. I still react the same way 40 some years later. The Mighty Van Halen was just on a different level!
EVH was a songwriting Maestro. 10 multi platinum albums in a row is big time legend status.
I'm 50 yrs old I put the album on when I was a teenager, and there hasn't been a time in my life where this record or CD or cassette wasnt far from my stereo, hell I'm watchin people listen to it on my phone, in my opinion you always hear people say oh this album was so and so masterpiece, this is Van Halens, they did ALOT of amazing music but this was just their peak to me, this is one of those albums I listened to from beginning to end the 1st time I listened to it, still in my top 10 favorite albums ever
Same
Van Halen saved my life as a young teen. I'm 55 now and I still get tears on many songs. RIP EDWARD 😢❤
I have a few years on you (59 soon), but I feel the same way. I bought this album brand new in 1981 and listened to it continually, and to the exclusion of anything else, for at least half a year.
This song, from the opening cords on, has always made me feel nostalgic since my first listen back in 1985 when I was 15.
Eddie was an amazing guitarist and song writer.
You should definitely check out their first album.
Wild! I haven’t heard this in many, many years, and I can still sing along. 🎶 Love Van Halen.
This in my favorite VH song! That intro holds a special place for me. I was 16 and me and a bunch of friends spent the night partying on the beach. The party winded down and I was sitting on the hood of the car leaning back on the windshield, coming down from an acid trip. This intro came on as the a.m. sun was starting to rise and it was a perfect moment. You should look for their live version from the Oakland California concert in '81. If you want to know how high their energy level was, check it out. They also do "Unchained" and "So this is love?".
When you peel back the many incredible layers of VH and it's work, you just continue to be impressed by so many different small but crucial additions to the music like the various percussion instruments to Dave's never ending vocal fills of screams and whistle like exclamations that simply act like icing on a great cake! Enjoy unpacking everything this band brings to the table. It's a big impressive collection!
For the 479th time in my life, Eddie is back to my number one guitarist spot. He'll stay there until I hear a coup SRV songs, and then the cycle will repeat itself again. ✌
SRV was great but produced nothing that came close to fair warning or reinvented guitar like Ed.
The King 🎸💣💣💣❤
You nailed it, because Eddie was the GOAT. But so was Stevie lol
They were the best to ever do what they did. And the same can be said for Jeff Beck, Jerry Reed, George Benson, and Django. Tops in their field.
...I know just what you mean. But these are different players, of different styles...consider this though, EVH created a style that influenced a generation(or 2) SRV mastered a style created by others.I thoroughly enjoy them both, but they are entirely different kinds of music.....do you prefer an apple, or an orange
@@raymo6795 Well said 👏
What a great Song.......💣
Imho, their very best offering. Along with “light up the sky”…
Totally agree
The bridge in this song is absolute perfection. My fave VH lp; weird, dark, intense yet melodic and incredibly written and performed. So glad you are digging it!!
Greatest of them all! These guys stand alone at the top of the rock world..the total package; chops, production…arrangements..perfection!
Can’t think of another group with such consistent song for song top shelf quality. 🤟🎸
Yo - Just found your channel and am so psyched that you're doing a deep dive into Van Halen. Everyone knows Eddie for his amazing lead guitar work, but the more you listen to their music, the more you realize that he was a GENIUS at rhythm guitar as well. RIP.
Desert island pick for the past 40 years 👏
I never heard that the strings were moist, but I like it, very original, good job😊
2:19 - The nostalgia comes from the fact that VH was a backyard party band before they got signed. Nearly all of the songs on their first few albums are dripping with a vibe, and that vibe is called summertime. Early Van Halen is summertime - the summertime of young, beautiful people bursting with energy. That's what it is.
Awesome reaction! Thanks ❤Much Love! #Van Halen
No problem 😊
Cool how he can make you feel with the guitar.Blues, rock,a story,hooks....
The reason you felt mysteriously nostalgic in the beginning is because music, as is all great art, is about communication, even when there are no voices. Your emotions should be stirred.
That guitar intro was written and performed by a genius level, historic figure of a musician who also put together some of the greatest guitar tones ever recorded. That intro is the definition of melancholy and introspective feelings.
You are tuned in Brother.
Edward Lodewijk Van Halen was not just a rock guitarist. He was a master.
Love this album
You got me when you first reacted to TOOL. You are now showing me my love for an album I haven’t listened to in years. Best VH album (my opinion) EVER! Start to finish
Thanks mugs - honestly, thank you.
Watch their bootleg show from Largo, Maryland 1982. You will see what this band was truly like in their prime.
“Completely unhinged and let loose” would definitely describe this solo…One of my favorites of his, it’s just so out there!
Thank you for this. After "Fair Warning" you should review "1984"
Yeah, but avoid the synthesizer material. The rest is pretty bangin.
Girl gone bad, top Jimmy, house of pain, drop dead legs….👍
No, don’t skip over Diver Down.
Yes, this is nostalgic AF for me. I bought this album the week it was released in 1981. My favorite VH album.
Yes, Eddie wrote the solo on beat it. Berry Gordy asked him personally to play on it.
Lol, it was Quincy Jones
@@johnmcmahonBXLA yes you are right. 👍
There is a video floating around and Eddie was talking about Beat It. He re arranged the whole song.
I am so HAPPY that you see the genius in VAN HALEN! You are a remarkable listener of GOOD music ! I really mean it. Keep up the great work.
You're feeling nostalgic because this was a great time to be alive and for music as well great video bud keep rocking
RIP EVH one of the Greatest this my third time tuning into your channel i am now a subscriber Keep up the great work
There are some great live videos from Oakland during this tour: Unchained, Hear About It Later, and So This is Love ... All worth checking out!!
The best has yet to come gotta react to Sunday Afternoon in the Park/One foot out the Door, best album Outro period!!😎
LOVE this album and I played it everyday when it came out! Mean Streets, Unchained are great but So This Is Love has always been my favorite off this album for it’s just good time fun. Then Sunday Afternoon in the Park is just crazy! Good reaction! Yes, very moist!
Absolutely correct...Eddie was feeling it on this album...he was pissed about the label and Dave always wanting radio hits
Thank you for doing this. You made me hear things in this song I never noticed before. It's a beautiful and brutal vibration.
Thanks again! Even before you said nostalgic, maaan I was 16-17 when this album came out. Yeah it takes me back...wet eye...
A thing about this album's more mainstream reception when it came out; it wasn't great. To summarize, it was accused of being too dark and melancholy, like the times begged for more pop-ish /"upbeat" themes. As for me, Fair Warning has always been my favorite album. These compositions withstand the test of time. I have never stopped playing Fair Warning, whence more popular groupings of VH songs have fallen on and off for me over the decades. Whatever was going on with VH at the time, I agree with you Mr. Mugnify, in the sense that the creativity quotient on this album is unsurpassed...and you ain't done yet!
One of their best albums heavy hard hitting straight up nasty vocals drums bass guitar everything on this album is killer
My favorite VH album. After all these years, it still sounds fresh.
It’s spot on when you said creative freedom. Nice catch! This is the first album that is almost entirely Eddie’s doing. It was a dark time for him and he got up in the middle of the night, by himself, to lay the tracks to these songs.
Van Halen....im here for it 🙌🏻...lov it brother 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻appreciate you 🙏
Van Halen 1 - listen and react to their first album. It was THE Game Changer! Get ready Bro!!
This has got to be my favorite song off this album and the first VH Concert ever for VH, NYC @ MSG.
Van Halen is Pure Fire!!
Michael Anthony's vocals combined with Eddie were amazing. Michael Anthony's bass and high vocals helped make the band 😅😅
I'm a huge van halen fan, and push comes to shove is one of my absolute favorite songs by them, but I feel most people overlook that song, it doesnt sound like anything else on this album, or really anything they ever did, their singer David Lee Roth is a big old school jazz and blues fan and he was really into like old 30s and 40s music, and Eddie Van Halen was a classically trained piano player and his dad was a jazz horn player "they cover the old tune Big bad Bill is sweet William now on their album Diver Down amd Eddie and Alex's dad plays horn on it" but before you check out push comes to shove it has a very smoky room just kinda playin music in a little club or studio vibe to it, in my opinion great song.
I love your reviews on Van Halen very happy you discovered them we all feel the same 10 out of 10 musical masterpiece of an album
Jealous...wish i could hear this again for the first time 😊
Oh man this takes me back my summers as young buck blasting this out the 76 gran Prix.
They opened with this, bouncing out all together, Diane my girlfriend and I snuck out and hitched into the city. Tickets were $12 at the door, Eddie and Alex both smiling the entire time, place smelled of Acapulco Gold, among the best night of my life. Thanks for hanging and sharing me at 16 years old. My parents listened to Donna Summer and Kenny Rogers, I was Led Zeppelin and Van Halen. Awesome music, we live our lives!!
This is my favorite VH song. Glad you like it!
Takes me back to my childhood
Hearing all this new VH b/c your into it. I knew the classics, but my god.
Brings back memories. Thanks amigo.
"Ime walkin' , dont need no ride"
_Sounds even better on vinyl!_
In his book _Crazy From The Heat_ Dave wrote that the writing on this album was inspired by his travels to far flung destinations and witnessing poor folks with nothing struggling and making do.
Good to see you’re really listening to this album. Great album
Appreciate the review Mugs. Through you, it's like I'm listening to it for the first time which was over 40 years ago. Like it as much now as then. The musical grammar you've been exposed to here will never leave you.
Very good reaction ! Love how you love the Mighty VH !!! Push Comes To Shove will be another banger ! Keep up the good work !
My favorite EVH solo!
Yeah Van Halen I seen I got five times he's nothing but pounding he's got a totally different sound than any other rock group
Gotta love that Bass! If only we had subwoofers in 1982…
They all are gems, but if I had to choose my favourite, this is it, it's a hook for sure. Happy trails friend ❤
Mugs I think you're awesome! You know your music! I love the way you break the songs down and explain it! you're awesome dude
A SUPER CLASSIC ALBUM ❤❤❤❤
This is the album with Dave! For unlawful carnal knowledge it’s probably Sammys! Thank God Eddie had these guys to propel him to the top where everyone could recognize his genius.👏👏👏
Yearning is the feeling
Everybody Wants Some!!!
Nostalgia is because nothing since. Eddie and Guitar was it's own personality. And it reflected the times they were in.
My opinion this is their best album
mugnify, you need to watch the videos of live performances available from the Fair Warning Tour. Unchained, Hear about it later and So, this is love? are all from the same night. one of 3 sold out nights in Oakland in '81. they're each bad ass. totally live. no lip synching. Very impressive.
this was the first VH album where Eddie took over production
yea, the beginning does feel nostalgic. i now what you mean
At the 09:20 the palm muting under Dave’s scream 💯👑🔥
Awesome! Track 8 rolls into track 9. The most badass sounds ever and the last song is fast and rolls.
Michael Anthony's thick, fat bass suports that solo so nice! He simply doesn't get enough credit, but he's an integral part of VH's sound.
This album was released in 81 my senior year of high school. Let's play guitar for almost 40 years and finally about a month ago started learning this song. Just got to clean the solo up a little bit. There is something about this song though. Get goosebumps sometimes playing or listening to it.
And you really need to google The story of how Eddie Van Halen was asked by Michael Jackson to do it. At the end of the story is Eddie did the solo and Steve lukather of Toto did the rest of the song for the most part. But great story overall.
I want to fly down, drink some beers and listen to tunes with you! You seem to be really cool and hip to all music.
hahahahahaah
Peace from Montreal dude!
This is great, now I have to look for "Unchained"!
By far the best Van Halen album
Dude you gotta reaction the live version of this from a live video from 1981 Oakland footage. Frickin insane. Also has unchained badassery as they pulled this off live.
There is a “isolated guitar” cut of this on RUclips. Check it out!! You’ll dig it
The intro has a suspended chord evokes which creates nostalgia
Granted, my older brother only owned the first 4 VH albums, but, Fair Warning was definitely my atmospheric favorite
The "MIGHTY VAN HALEN"!
Little White Boy Swing from the Mighty VH!!!!😂😂😂❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Hahaha... Mugs had no idea. After Fair Warning many VH fans were satisfied.😆
Fun to listen to with ya dude
Great reactions, you’re so on point with your analysis , can’t wait for more. You’re just getting started 👍
About the creative freedom, this album was really Eddie's creation. He would even sneak into the studio to work on it without the rest of the band knowing about it. A lot of people say this was Eddie's "darkest" playing. I'm not sure what that means, but I kinda feel like you do, that he was feeling free.
I remember learning to play this song on the guitar when I was in jr high
When the album came out we used to think he said “will your lovin be my pills”
