That's what Eddie did. He showed everyone that the guitar was anything but a guitar. He made sounds come from the guitar that nobody had ever heard before. Pure genius. RIP EDDIE
Literally *nobody* knew you could play a guitar like that when Eddie came onto the scene. He rewrote the book and nobody before or after has come close to his mastery of the instrument. I play a a little bit of guitar myself and every time I watch this solo my hand starts doing motions on a subconscious level. I'm not religious but I swear Eddie Van Halen was channeling something greater than what we can ever understand.
It is so fun to watch peoples facial expressions as there brain tries to process it all . Eddie was the first at many new things and a true legend and KING of the hammer ons . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and they were SO good ! Just awesome to see younger generations discover this man and his many talents .. RIP Eddie you will be missed Sir ! Great reaction !

It's just such a pleasure to watch people who appreciate Edward's playing the way I do. I've realized now that this solo is a masterpiece and I think that people will be marveling at it and enjoying it for decades or even centuries to come, not unlike the way the works of Mozart and Beethoven (and others) are enjoyed hundreds of years after their deaths. In a nutshell, nobody has every played a guitar and created sounds and music like this piece here. It's a treasure.
Legendary band..not only is/was Eddie one of the best guitarist..but his brother Alex is a beast on the drums.. And there songs are incredible 👍🔥😎
Fun fact: Eddie started on drums…Alex on guitar…and when Ed would come home from delivering news papers he’d catch Alex on his drums…so he’d pick up Alex’s guitar…the rest was HISTORY… I learned this on a documentary Eddie did a year before his death. Absolutely INCREDIBLE.
Eddie was the Greatest EVER...The cigarette behind the low E string,the two hand tapping,the tremolo picking and that smile...Like he knew the answer to everything but wasnt quite ready to share it with us mere mortals. and that guitar tone like NO other.
He couldn't write it down because he never learned to read music. Just a God given talent
from what I heard, not only did Eddy play the guitar solo for Beat It but he also rearranged the song and gave it to Michael Jackson to see what he thought and Michael liked it so much he kept what Eddy had done to the song!
I watched an interesting documentary prior to Eddie’s death… he explained how he never learned to read music and that he literally created his own music with his own technique(s) and chords. When sheet music was create for his music.. he couldn’t read it… he created his own “language”…and his guitars…they were basically “ Frankenstein” creations with different guitar bodies..necks..fret boards…he was one of a kind and a musical GENIUS

And he was never in tune. He broke the rules and now his son Wolfgang is making his own way., Mammoth WHV. Is his own style. And before Eddie died. He said how proud he was of his son.😊

Frankenstrat was his main and first . He didn't but they created "tabular " music charts because Eddie didn't read music so he couldn't tell them how to write it so ..... There are a few innovations that he came up with that are industry standards now.

Slash was still a youngster, trying to hang out on “the strip” and immerse himself in the culture when Beat It was recorded.
Not only did Eddie play the solo for MJ, he also reworked the song to make it all come together better…and when Michael saw/heard that, he LOVED it!
Yes…Eddie changed the way the guitar was looked at right away in 1978.

RIP Eddie. This video never gets old. He said he was completely drunk and couldn’t remember much, if any of this, so you saw an extremely drunk man play some of the best guitar ever. I play guitar and after I’ve had a few I find I play a lot better. Maybe that’s why Eddie had such a hard time quitting the booze. I loved him he was, and always will be my idol. Not only was he a great guitarist, but he was also an unbelievably good composer of songs.
He was for sure NOT drunk for this one...They filmed over 2 nights and he was told NO drinking so it would be perfect...He didnt like it but he did it...
So glad I got to learning his music while he was still alive…Wish I could have seen him live😕

damn, I love that face when you realize you are witnessing greatness :) There was no one like Eddie... He made it look so effortless... yes, I'm sure he could play behind his back like Jimi or SRV if he wanted to,... but he was his own legend. Long live EVH, RIP EVH.
Love, love, saw them 3 times live. I read that the way sheet music is written for the guitar had to be changed because of the way Eddie Van Halen played. He found it comical, since he could not even read sheet music. What a talented treasure he was. His son Wolfgang i believe is even more talented. Also there is a very short, few seconds video on RUclips of eddie playing beat it live on stage with Michael. There is also a live video of Wolfgang at a benefit for Taylor Hawkins(i think), playing couple of van halens songs. He plays the leads note for note i swear. It seems like he channels his father. It is really unbelievable.

Eventually, you come to understand that there can be a top 3 or even 4 that you can't compare to the other as they are the seasons much like fall and spring are uncomparable entities just as great and important as the other.

This piece had Beethoven all through it. You're right, it had an edge....like alot of Eddie's music. His tone was instantly recognizable. It was very fast but it was clean. You could hear every note even though they were running buy very quickly. Listening to Eruption forces your brain to move faster than normal. Which would normally be annoying but you find yourself enjoying a beautiful piece of music. A very different and enjoyable experience...that people couldn't get enough of

Eddie was truly amazing. He built his own guitar and dubbed it Frankenstein. Because he used parts from different styles of guitars. He also was the first person that really used tapping. Eddie also gave Dimebag Darrel one of his guitars to be buried with Dime. Eddie was Dime’s favorite guitarist.
Check out the video of MJ in concert with Eddie playing in “Beat it”. It’s pretty cool. Also, if you like and appreciate drums, check out Alex Van Halen’s drum solo from _this_ concert.

"Maggot Brain" was recorded in one take when George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told guitarist Hazel during the recording session to play as if he had been told his mother was dead] Clinton explained "I told him to play like his mother had died, to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him." So, Im a bassist. In the 2nd section after the intro, his right pinky is on the volume. Only played with 1 guitarist in 40 years that can legit do it. Ive tried on bass. Moderate success at best. I mean I CAN as long as its not too complex. Tried to learn it as a muting thing but its easier the old school way lol!
That's the way Jeff Beck played.... his thumb and index fingers picked, his palm was on the whammy and his pinky controlled the volume and tone dials all at once. That's the way he played all the time just like Eddie taps in like 5 different styles in a lot of his stuff.
That spacey part you were saying was just him using different petals and a lower tone and tapping the strings while his right hand was turning the volume up and down on the knob Sounds like an organorgan... that song is called cathedral

One name I haven't heard mentioned is Stanley Jordan. His style is more jazz oriented, but you'll also hear some great tapping
Eddie (RIP) was a classically trained piano player but couldn't read music, while he didn't invent "tapping" he sure made it famous and played the guitar almost like it was a piano. He built many of his instruments and just fiddled around to see what sounds he could get out of them
I don’t know if you’ve listened to any other Van Halen, this concert is a bit into their career. The singer who introduced him was their second lead singer Sammy Hager. He replaced David Lee Roth who you’ll see in commonly reacted videos like “Jump,” “Hot for Teacher, “Panama,” and more. Even though both were great, the change was taken hard and caused a split in the fan base who’d been there from the beginning. NOTE: You can Eddie toss guitar picks to the crowd in this vid. He stuck them to his guitar, mic stand, etc, to do this frequently until brawls over catching them forced him to stop.
Just a thought, maybe you should listen to a guitarist named Yngwie Malmsteen. You talked about different styles of playing guitar, and Yngwie has his own style for sure. Worthy of your time. ✌🏼😎

Great reaction. His brother Alex is a criminally underrated drummer, and only cuz he was in a band with that monster of a guitar player. There’s a drum solo from that same concert floating around on here.

EVH is still the reigning heavyweight champion of the world. SRV, whom I met...amazing man, never played a note that didn't satisfy your soul. The funny thing is you kept saying Ed made you want to play guitar....please inspire the next generation to do so. EVH is the greatest but I have to believe, he can't wait to see who pushes past him. Inspire!!!

There are two ways Eddie Van Halen or Stevie Ray Vaughn made people who wanted to play guitar feel, either I want to learn more about playing or to take your guitar and use it for firewood because you can't get to that level. Check out Neil Peart from the band RUSH and his 9 minute+ drum solo (He also wrote all the bands lyrics) He was called "The Professor and was considered as the greatest "Rock" Drummer of all time. His kit is like 90 pieces and totally encircles him. The solo is over 9 minutes long. Search Neil Peart Live in Frankfurt.

Saw Van Halen over 25 years ago in Brisbane, Australia. I was in the third row, he was note for note perfect, was awesome.
I saw the Perth show. So glad I went, it was one of those occasions where you realise that the jaw dropping is actually a real thing. He was just so good.
He had an interview years later about this epic solo and he said that he was so drunk that night that he doesn't remember doing it!! The man was a true legend, RIP EVH

Eddie wasn't the first to discover "tapping" the guitar strings but he became the best at it. It allowed him to play with just his left hand or play two parts at once.
This is why we had better music in the 80s! No one today can touch this, probably never will! You don’t need talent now- the technology does it all for you.
That acceleration part at the end of the tapping solo is sooooooo hard to hit right, you have to change the base fret every 3 notes😳

Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour and Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Page(from Led Zeppelin) were huge influences on Eddie. Guitar legend David Gilmour from Pink Floyd is one you should give a listen/reaction to...OMG, that man is a beast!!
Stevie Ray was never an influence of Eddie’s and he has never mentioned David Gilmour. He’s also known to have said that he did not like Hendrix, and only developed a liking much later in life.
Eddie and Alex did like Led Zeppelin a lot, but Eddie always mentions Clapton as his biggest influence. Together with Allan Holdsworth those are his most notable influences.

This is actually a few different solo's neatly strung together... the main is "Eruption" (it leads into "You Really Got Me"). you hear it at torwsrd the begining/in the middle/& at the end.. in between those are a couple of solo's from other song's along with a couple of intro's to a song such as "Mean Street" and "Cathedral"/the intro to "Secrets"..

I am a huge SRV fan, but he did not change or revolutionize the guitar.
Eddie did. How the guitar is played, how it sounds and how it’s build. Besides that Eddie was a much more developed songwriter than SRV.

There are/were many talented guitarists out there- and EVH is in the top five in history pretty much regardless who you ask. He’s in my top 3 certainly. If you don’t know who Jeff Healey was, you should.
Eddie is my personal favorite guitarist but the Magazine GUITAR WORLD puts Eddie in number 2 of all time best guitarist's. Stevie Ray Vaughan (SR ) only placed 6. There are so very many great guitar players. You should check out the video of ROCK and ROLL celebration of George Harrison's song "MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS". Prince does an incredible guitar solo.

Over the whole solo he takes in parts of european classic music masterpieces of the last 300 years. So some parts sounds familiar without knowing them.
When their first album was released in 1978, everyone was saying what you said…that you didn’t know the guitar could be played like that, haha!

Love SRV..really do. Guy was a blues master. But EVH is on another galaxy than SRV. EVH has so much diversity on top of all world skill that you couldn't sit and watch a 14 min SRV solo and stay entertained. You just can't. SRV had the best blues links ever. But much of it is rinse and repeat. After the 5 min mark SRV would be reusing similar licks. All of them would. Eddie has so much variety that he can pull off a 14 min solo like this and your entertained the whole time.
You have no basis to make that assumption you just sound like a superfan lol
Just to add to this, not only is this one of the greatest guitar performances ever, he stated later that he was blackout drunk during this and he doesn't even remember it.
