Being from the mountains of Virginia. As a kid we were huge Van Halen fans. As you said, they're fun. So any teenager wherever they are would get into their music. It was fun and at that time there wasn't anything that sounded like it. At least the first album.
My First VH Concert.. NYC @ MSG... Fair Warning was an "on Purpose" Album.. 1981 when this album dropped ..It was the first of 7 times that I was blessed to see EVH! My Favorite song on the album.. Outstanding dude!
Van Halen is the greatest HARD rock band, period. No contest. They're in a different category than say, "The Beatles or Zeppelin. But, including ALL bands in a list, even though they are my favorite band, I couldn't put them in THAT top 5. Top 10? Yes, I can. Still the number one greatest Hard Rock band that will ever be.
@@gary6754 I don't disagree. So are Van Halen. The Beatles, Zeppelin, The Stones, Floyd, Van Halen, and Queen are all their own categories. They stand alone, far above the pack.
They're in MY top 5...in my top 3, even! This whole album is a little darker, a little more cynical for them.....with a little more attitude that catered to my friends and I as we did our thing around town, etc.......giving us our lofty ideals of ourselves! It is possibly their best album, musically, IMO!
Biz, I am glad you are doing these album reviews of VH. since you've asked in the past about ranking the albums, my DLR era HV goes 1984> VH I>A Different Kind of Truth>VH II> Fair Warning~= Diver Down~=Women and Children first ( if push came to shove, I'd go W&C>FW>DD). Of the Sammy Hagar era I'd go 5150>For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge>OU812>>Balance. The Gary Cheronne (sp?) fronted album, VH III, was hot garbage. And since you have brought it up numerous times with talking about DLR, he had that swag and fun factor that really fit that era of the band, and arguably that style is what I think of when I think of VH, but I honestly think that Sammy's catalog --especially those first 3 albums of his, are killer all the way through and have a more "mature" attitude to them with Eddie still killing it on the riffs. Think of it as teenager vs. adulthood kind vibes.

Top 5? I'd say top 3. I'm from Vermont we tracked hours to see them in Massachusetts. Everyone loves them it wasn't just the music they had a sense of humor and plus the interviews with Dave and the live shows. It's the total package. Easy top 3 not top 5
Who is on the same level as Edward? Maybe Paul McCartney but Paul never built his equipment. Many have mastered an instrument but who invented new techniques and style.

In my humble opinion, Fair Warning is VH masterpiece. Such a dirty & gritty sound. Perfection
