This was their 1st album. Eddie Van Halen introduced himself by nuking the entire landscape of guitar playing. There is a fat and distinct line of before and after. He is one of the most influential guitar players of all time, so the emulation of his sound and technique was very wide spread. It's almost a half a century later and you can still hear it with the new generation of guitar players.
The impact Eddie Van Halen on rock can't be understated. He was doing things no one had even considered. Due to his success, all rock bands of the time and after were influenced to one degree or another.

Saw them Live In 1980. It was the loudest concert I've ever been to and I've been to a lot (62 yrs old) Diamond Dave danced around with his bare ass hanging out a pair of fringed chaps , shirtless, doing spinning kicks 8ft in the air. Eddie Slamming hard on the Kramer, Cig in his mouth, or the guitar string end on the neck. Mike and Alex keeping the beat down. It was glorious.

Dave's vocal bridge between the choruses really speaks to me. He says he's been to the edge and stood and looked down, and lost a lot of friends there. I swear, that's me. A lot of my friends have been to the edge, and just couldn't stop and kept going right over it. I've managed to turn back every time I've been there, but let me tell you there's times I never knew how close I came to following my friends.

October 19th, 1982. Spectrum Philadelphia, Pa. Eddie had broken his hand a few days before and VH had to cancel some shows in Jersey but thankfully the tour had resumed that night and me and my bud from school had tickets and caught the train to see the show, my first legit concert, I was barely 15 years old. First thing I saw was Eddie, Mike, and Alex on stage and they started playing the opening riff of Running With The Devil. I was so focused on Eddie's cast and how he was playing I forgot about Dave and then wondered "where the hell was Dave?" Next thing I know a spotlight shines on him standing on a platform or amp or something, looked like it was fifty feet tall for all I knew (obviously not) and he jumps and does a mid-air split, lands perfectly and rolls right in to the song without missing a beat. Crowd went nuts. About halfway through the show they're jammin' to Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, I'm standing against the railing on the second level and someone smacks my ass. I turn around and see this super cute chick smiling at me. Then she came in real close nuzzled up against my neck, bit my earlobe and made this "grrrrrrr" sound that sent a shockwave through me that I will never forget. Then she backed away, yelled "whooooooo" and danced out of my life. Great show, great memories.

This eponymous first album of theirs became such a staple in the fabric of Our Lives for me starting in junior high. Every song on it is fire. But the whole album in a way was something that you heard all these songs on the radio constantly and if you went to the lake you know it would be getting played the whole album. And so of course almost all of us owned it. I finally got a chance to see them in the late seventies when they're second album came out and it was a fantastic show. I just can't say enough about how woven into the fabric of our life they were for a lot of us anyway.

I was 16 in 1978 and my older brother found this 8-track tape on the side of the road, and he said "Check out this guitar player." The tape was like new, just laying on the shoulder. We had never heard of Van Halen before, neither had any of our friends at that time. "Eruption" -WOW. We wore that tape out....

This was an album that took the rock world by storm in the late '70s. You could hear these songs on the radio constantly for years and years and years. You know what I would suggest? Look up a playlist of their self-titled first album. And then compare those titles of the songs with things you see in the comments and then just start to pick songs. You won't be disappointed. You really will not be disappointed. Every song on this album is fire.
I remember that my younger sister loved Janie's Crying off of this album. And I like every song on this album very deeply. But I would say, there is a very interesting and beautiful song, it's almost a ballad and it captures a slower emotional content than you hear from them very often, and yet it's still rocks. And while I did hear it on the radio a fair amount, it's not one that most people think of as their first song when they think of the album. But it's called Little Dreamer. It's absolutely beautiful.

That 1st Van Halen album was so influential for me. I couldn't get enough of it. Then I got to see them live, first in Shreveport then a few months later at the '79 Texxas Jam. Imagine mid-afternoon, 120⁰ on the field of the Cotton Bowl, people packed shoulder to shoulder so tight that you could barely move, and then Van Halen hits the stage and you're jolted full of energy! 80,000 fists in the air pumping to "Hey Hey Hey". Good times! Saw VH many times after that, including their last North American performance with DLR at the helm in Dallas at Reunion Arena, but that Texxas Jam show was unforgettable.

It's really nice to see younger fans enjoying the music of my youth. Back in the 80's, Van Halen owned the guitar-rock sound with hit after hit of their brand of high energy, power chord rock. I first saw them in concert at the Omni in Atlanta on August 22nd, 1981 during the early MTV years. The opening band was "G Force" and the concert ticket was just $8.00. Believe it or not, I still have the concert ticket; that one + about 90 more ticket stubs from the concerts I've seen over time since first seeing KISS at the Spectrum in Philadelphia back in '78. Anyway, keep on Rocking guys, you're doing fine.

Van Halen's first album that came out in 1978 (simply called Van Halen) is a milestone in the evolution of Hard Rock..
All the songs are fantastic and it has the first mainstream example of double tapping in the legendary instrumental: Eruption.
A must have for any rock fan.
This song, Ain't talking 'bout love, has such an AWESOME riff and the guitar sounds so futuristic.
Even in hundreds years from now this song will sound fresh as if it has just been recorded.
