"5150" was going to be a make-or-break album, to see how well the band could survive without David Lee Roth. And holy mother of god, they hit it straight out of the park, straight to the moon. The whole album is pure gold.
5150 is the 1st album with Sammy Hagar after David Lee Roth left the band. Both era's are distinct and exceptional. Sammy is an accomplished guitarist & song writer and gave Van Halen more depth.

This is an amazing song. When Sammy Hagar joined the band everything took a step up in my opinion. My favorite song by Van Halen with Sammy is "When it's love" from the album OU812. That song is on nearly every playlist I have ever made. Great song selection, the video of this with the Blue Angels is amazing!
Like everyone was commenting, this was Sammy Hagar on lead vocals. David Lee Roth left to do a solo career. That was the added benefit of Sammy helping on guitar where DLR didn't provide that. My very first concert was their first album so I do like both versions of the band.
Great song. Everyone has said it before. This was a maturation of a band. Constantly evolving. I like Van Halen and their evolution. Just like we do as human beings. We can’t be young swagger our whole life. Keep exploring them.
This is actually Van Halen with Sammy Hagar on vocals, and Eddie was on the keyboards. David Lee Roth was no longer in the band. Some called this version of Van Halen Van Hagar
"Uplifting" and "motivational" are kind of trademarks of Sammy Hagar, whether solo or with Van Halen. "Give to Live', "Right Now", "Eagles Fly", and "Love Walk's In" (and many more) all have that inspirational feel. He's good people.
Van Hagar was certainly more melodic than when DLR was singing. I’m odd in that I like both singers. I appreciate the song structure of the later stuff and the swagger of the early stuff. I think that!s why 1984 is my favorite VH album, because it has the best of both types of songs.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee I agree, with this caveat… DLR actually used his voice like another instrument, accenting the song with his wails, screams, and note slides. That’s why is seems to have the swagger of a bigger band instead of three musicians and a singer.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee This!!! I prefer and really like Sammy Hagar's solo stuff but am very meh with Van Hagar. By FAR I prefer the DLR Van Halen era. I find the Van Hagar stuff almost unlistenable for the most part and again, I like Sammy Hagar a lot...just not VHagar. That era is everything I don't like about a lot of bands and music in that time frame. I liked edgier and grittier. But that is just my tastes, not right or wrong.
@@3toobular That's exactly my viewpoint. I didn't really start getting into Van Halen until Sammy was already in the band and I liked the music. But then as I started listening to the earlier stuff with Dave, I definitely preferred his set of songs over Sammy's. OU812 is probably my least favorite VH album, even behind VHIII with Cherone, but...I am a big fan of Sam's solo work and have seen him in concert on his own. Sam helped get the band more mainstream with what I would call more pop/"soft rock" while Dave was more dance/"hard rock." It isn't all to be blamed on Sam for going softer, either. Ed wanted to go more in this direction, more keyboards and such, which is part of what made Dave want to test the solo waters.
1984 was Eddie and Alex taking control of the band back. Diver down was a bad album that DLR was in charge of. All he wanted to do was crappy covers and jump around. So Eddie and Alex taking control pushed DLR to start working on a solo project behind their backs. That’s why he was tossed out.
This is Sammy Hagar on vocals and writing the lyrics. David Lee Roth was essentially kicked out of VH. The era with Sammy Hagar began with this song, originally released for the Blue Angels Navy Flight demonstration team. Sammy wrote the lyrics about his teenage (at the time) daughter. Those she has kept her out of public spotlight, many of his song lyrics were inspired by her... The Sammy Hagar era sold the most albums, all reaching Gold and Platinum status, and the most successful tours for the band.
Have you guys realized that there are two "Van Halens" in the band? Eddie (guitar) and Alex Van Halen (drums) are the two core members of the band. There was even one album with 3 Van Halens, Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie's son) playing bass guitar.
More people need to hear this message in 2022. Dry your eyes, save all the tears you’ve cried, for we belong to a world that must be strong! In the end on dreams we will depend, for that’s what love is made of. Serious messages our current culture has forgotten.
With David Lee Roth you got an entertainer. 100% fire. The Martial Arts, the backflips. High screams, charisma, fun and sexual, booze fueled energy. Even at one point, Big Band showtoons. (That was an interesting phase) He was the original, and he was totally right for their early juvenile party years. With Sammy Hagar you got the inspirational songs about the power of love, the world as a whole, and even a bit of of naughty, but with more subtlety. They are two COMPLETELY different animals, and for MOST fans they make for a divisive finished product. At the end of the day, even though some fans may not like one or the other, both versions of Van Halen have something for everyone.
This was the first Van Halen song I ever heard at the end of the Power Rangers movie back in the '90s and ever since then I've always been a fan and this will always be my favorite.
I've always loved Hagar - and with him, Eddie finally had his backing guitar tracks while playing live. Don't let'em fool ya - Van Hagar was badass as well. (Plus, he wrote better lyrics - as usual)
I heard this on the radio driving home from work back in high school and didn't know who it was. Didn't hear it again for like 5 years, despite always waiting for it. Haunted me until I heard it again. Such an amazing song!
The comments on this one are really good. The changes Sammy made to VH were great and I was fortunate to see them live at Wembley in 1993 when they did the Right Here Right Now tour. It's the best live concert experience I've ever had and is still my favourite to this day. I adore One Way to Rock from that night and you can see it live on youtube. Seeing Sammy and Eddie jam away during the solo is something I'll never forget.
As everyone else has been stating: This is not Diamond Dave, it's Slamming Sammy Hagar, the Red Rocker. Sammy got his break working with guitarist Ronnie Montrose. Then he became a star in his own right. After Van Halen fired David Lee Roth, they invited Sammy to take the reins. Sammy was with them longer than Dave, and they had bigger hits, thanks to his songwriting. Another song like this that Amber would surely like would be "Why Can't This Be Love". After Journey, this period of Van Halen was a fave of my late wife.
Having seen both versions play live, I can honestly say I prefer the Van Hagar version of the band. While Sammy Hagar may not have been quite the flamboyant front man that David Lee Roth was, he was a better singer and could hit notes that David Lee Roth could only 'dream' about (see what I did there?!). Sammy played a mean guitar himself, so to me that just meant a better overall total show. In fact, Sammy played several solos in concert while Eddie was playing the keyboard! The dueling guitars section between Sammy and Eddie stand out in my mind, as they climbed up into the lighting scaffolding to perform it! It was insane!!!
I was driving down to see my brother when he was in the Army and stationed in Alabama. A radio station in Nashville was doing a world premiere of 5150 and played it commercial free in its entirety. I didn’t want to lose reception so I pulled off the freeway so I could listen to the whole thing. I bought the cassette in Huntsville before I hit the road to drive home. I don’t know how many times I listened to it consecutively. I do know it’s about a ten hour drive.
Eddie also played keyboards for the band, along with the prerequisite guitar solo. He and Alex both trained in classical piano as children, thanks to their father being a professional musician 😃
Don't leave out the fact that there's a killer rhythm guitar track behind that keyboard, and the melodic acoustic arpeggios in the intro. The piano was Eds primary instrument growing up.
my favourite van halen song! never cared for VH with DLR but sammy brought fresh, uplifting, melodic changes to their sound, EVH got to grow and expand/experiment more with keyboards as he wanted, and i loved it! as others have said, check out their original video with the blue angels. the soaring melody and optimism is truly enhanced by it!
This is your 1st song with Sammy Hagar as singer, he adds something so special to the mix, and the songs get more emotional and deeper. I think maybe Eddie wanted to go in that direction already but DLR was holding him back, just conjecture, the split with DLR happened for SO many reasons it's easy to pile on more. You should try Love Comes Walking In, or the song Right Now.
@@jonlate4581 You're right, I forgot about that! They did. They have too many comments to read them all so we probably told them then too, but it wasn't caught.
Sammy Hagar became lead singer in 1985.. Dave was a great front man, but Sammy has a MUCH stronger voice! This album and the album "OU812" are awesome from start to finish..
Next time you guys react to Van Halen, I would love for you guys to react to Little Guitars - Van Halen. This song is a very underrated song and the guitar work throughout the song is amazing and catchy.
The original video for this song showcases the Blue Angels and is really cool!!!This song along with Best of Both worlds are my favorites with Sammy Hager on lead vocals.
I remember something to the effect of: When Sammy came to "audition" for lead singer, he was warmng up in another room and he belted out one of his trademark screams in key and guys were like- YOU'VE GOT THE JOB!

He's known as the Red Rocker. Go back even farther when he was in the band Montrose.....Rock Candy, Bad Motor Scooter.
I was in the 6th grade in 1990, when I first heard Dreams which came out in 1986. My cousin was playing it in his car one day and I was ripped to bits. Couldn't understand the magic I was hearing. I fell in love with Van Halen and my cousin gave me his tape. It was the 5150 album on cassette. For the next 3 years it's all I listened to on my walkman. Once I got to high school I figured I'd listen to more of their albums. I bought FUCK and was officially hooked. All these years later, I like 5150 a little better. Then Balance came out when I was in 11th grade and it was everything I wanted. I fell in love with Van Halen and listened to them all throughout junior high and high school. 5150, FUCK and Balance. In these 6 years I discovered my other bands which would become my all time top favorites. Along with the mighty Van Halen, it's The Scorpions, Megadeth, Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, and Alice In Chains. I do love several other bands but those 5 or 6 are top. I'm sure I have a top 10. Their music means so much to me and I love them so much. When I listen to them frequently and I always find new things and new parts of a song that I end up loving so much. Well, Dreams started it all for me. 1990. 6th grade kid with a lot of imagination and genuine intrigue and wonder. After highschool I learned more about DLR and those first group of records. It was still Van Halen to me and I loved it just as much. I bought all the cd's , studied and memorized every thing and I love it all. I have favorites from both eras and even some dislikes from both. I was lucky to see them love in the early 90s. My first concert and a tremendous show. Good reaction video you guys. I enjoyed it. They have such a brilliant catalog you need to get in to. ✌️ 🎸
So glad you finally got to another song from the Sammy Hagar section of VH's music! Though David Lee Roth was an epic frontman, Sammy was his equal in many ways. Some more of Van Hagar's selections that you need to add to your list are "Best of Both Worlds", "Amsterdam", "Feels So Good", and "Why Can't This Be Love".
This was our class song for my graduating class. The official video had a Navy Blue Angels performance, and our school was about half full with Navy brats, and the Blue Angels did a show nearly every year at the Navy base a few miles away. I can remember many teachers would hold class outside when the Blue Angels would be practicing during the week.
I hate it because I know they don't do research but I know the whole time they kept saying David Lee Roth with his different ranges it's like you kind of telling the TV no it's Sammy not David Roth
I literally was yelling it at the tv whilst having an 80s rock lover’s stroke. Sammy is THE man for me like Steve Perry and his voice is so incredible. DLR is not close to Sammy’s vocals.
When Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen, they turned into a true supergroup, this was from their first album with Hagar, '5150' from 1986. Love this song, brilliant.
Although Van Halen had some good songs with David Lee Roth, my interest in the band took off with Sammy on the lead singer position. Guitars are amazing as usual. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I love this song. I was born in 1999 and when I was either 4 or 5 I watched the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie and this song was ingraved into my mind. It was played in the ending after everything was done.

That is Sammy Hagar silly.. the Red rocker you did his song I can't drive 55.. REMEMBER THE HEROES Sammy Hagar put Van Halen up 10 notches when he join the band
I have seen Van Halen many times. I saw Van Halen's first Five tours. In the first 1-3 tours Dave and the band were amazing. By tours 4-5 it had become the Dave show, nearly every song was interrupted by Dave having something to say about nothing. I saw Van Hager twice and the band just seemed happier. I always been a Sammy Hager fan I saw his band in 1984? and he put on one of the best concerts I have ever seen.
This album, "5150," is the first album on which SAMMY HAGAR replaced David Lee Roth as vocalist. Sammy arrived with credentials, having enjoyed a successful solo career (biggest hit: "I Can't Drive 55") and first come to public attention as vocalist for the band "Montrose" on their first two albums.
This is Van Hagar. DLR left to pursue his solo career, and Sammy Hagar was brought in. Sammy was and still is a great solo act and an amazing guitarist. He was a nice addition, until he had a falling out with Eddy, and Alex. Sammy is someone you should check out. "I can't drive 55" would e a good start. Thanks for the smiles

Hagar was a Lead Singer, David Lee Roth was a Rock Star, but in the end, we all know it's not about the lead singer R.I.P. EVH
Y'all should have played the video. It has the navy blue angles in it. Awesome
Anyone else get chills at the somber end of the song. What an ending!
YESSSSS!!😍😍😍😍
This was the 1st album WITHOUT David Lee Roth. Roth left in 85, this is Sammy Hagar, who would be with them awhile. DLR came back circa 2007
He came back when he really couldn't sing
“So baby dry your eyes, leave all the tears behind “. My favorite lyric of the whole song
(That was an interesting phase)
He was the original, and he was totally right for their early juvenile party years.
Great to see all the love for Sammy. He was an ace with Montrose, through his solo career, and with Van Halen.
I heard this on the radio driving home from work back in high school and didn't know who it was. Didn't hear it again for like 5 years, despite always waiting for it. Haunted me until I heard it again. Such an amazing song!
My favorite Van Hagar song is "Finish What You Started". Totally different groove and picking style for Eddie and the boys. 🤘
Eddie was also a classically trained pianist, so whenever you here some keys either Eddie wrote those parts & or is actually playing them.
Seen both and agree Sammy overall was better
1st album with Sammy !!! Came out my senior year of High School
This is the Sammy Hagar version of Van Halen...You reacted to him solo. "I cant drive 55" sammy took them to a whole nother level
One of their best songs. Loved Hagar as lead singer.
my favourite van halen song! never cared for VH with DLR but sammy brought fresh, uplifting, melodic changes to their sound, EVH got to grow and expand/experiment more with keyboards as he wanted, and i loved it! as others have said, check out their original video with the blue angels. the soaring melody and optimism is truly enhanced by it!
I suggested this one too! You're finally getting to the stuff I suggested!
No, they've heard Sammy before. They did a reaction to Poundcake awhile back. Maybe they thought that was DLR also...
@@jonlate4581 You're right, I forgot about that! They did.
They have too many comments to read them all so we probably told them then too, but it wasn't caught.
Actually they did react to Poundcake
plus Sammy was skilled enough with a guitar to play rhythm if needed
They were not so limited by David Lee Roth's truly poor technique and key pitch problems.
This is the best song by far imho ever. I love this song, it will be played at my celebration of life someday.
Humans Being is my favorite Van Hagar song. It's from the soundtrack of the movie Twister. The whole soundtrack for that movie is amazing.
A must do from Van Halen is "Girl Gone Bad"! The guitar work in that song is spaghetti kisses.
Sammy Hagar became lead singer in 1985.. Dave was a great front man, but Sammy has a MUCH stronger voice! This album and the album "OU812" are awesome from start to finish..
People forget EVH wasn't solely an amazing guitar god, but he was an accomplished piano player, as evidenced in this song
And what I’ve read is that having Hagar in the band allowed him to focus more on his piano work cause Hagar could play guitar whereas Roth could not.
Next time you guys react to Van Halen, I would love for you guys to react to Little Guitars - Van Halen. This song is a very underrated song and the guitar work throughout the song is amazing and catchy.
Absolutely!!!
Great song
that is one of those great song with pure emotion and deep meaning. VH is my al time Fav Band. RIP Eddie, there will nevdr be another.
A good Van Halen to check out with Sammy Hagar is the music video for "Right Now"
Van Halen with Sammy!! So Good!!! Great song and a great voice. Right Now is one of my favorite songs from Van Hagar👌🏼
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love and "You Really Got Me(Kinks cover) !!
edit - thats Sammy Hagar on vocals
This is Sammy Hagar. First album with Van Halen. Breath of fresh air.
Clown show was gone!
Sammy Hagar lead vocals. Must react to Love Walks in. Sammy had a great solo career before joining VH. Check out I Can't Drive 55, Heavy Metal, There's Only One Way To Rock, I'll Fall In Love Again. He's known as the Red Rocker. Go back even farther when he was in the band Montrose.....Rock Candy, Bad Motor Scooter.
They already reacted to I Can't Drive 55. It was a year ago.
The Vans of Halen were great cuz they always stuck together as a unit through the 60's to modern day.
Van Halen lightened up their music when Roth left. Incorporating more keyboards and less of that hard edge from before.
That's why I generally like the Roth era better. Nothing to do with Roth vs Hagar. I just want to hear one of the best guitarists ever play guitar!
DLR Could Never.
Love this song. My first listen was accompanied by a video featuring the Blue Angels flying Skyhawk jets.
That’s not David Lee Roth singing! That’s Sammy!
Van Halen (with Sammy Hagar at lead vocals) "LOVE COMES WALKING IN" 💜💜
One of my favorite songs! I use this song when I make videos of my classroom kids! Another one I use is "Hello" by The Cars! You DEFINITELY have to check that one out!!!
That is Sammy Hagar silly.. the Red rocker you did his song I can't drive 55.. REMEMBER THE HEROES Sammy Hagar put Van Halen up 10 notches when he join the band
#agreed
David Lee Roth's hair is rolling over in its grave😂
@@debbiedebster5806 lol
This came out right when I went into the military during AIT school. The video with the Jets was so cool and was on constant playlist.
Early Van Halen with David Lee Roth vocals made me fall in love with the band but they got better when Sammy Hager took over.
Live shows also got better. Less theatrics but just better music and singing.
@@jasong.5165But studio albums against studio albums, nothing beats the first six made by David Lee Roth and company.
My favorite Van Halen era. Sammy for the win.
This has to be my 2nd favorite VH song, with the favorite being When It's Love
Another song from the Sammy Hagar era of VH that's motivational is "Top of the World"
I have seen Van Halen many times.
This was the second single on Van Halen's first album with Sammy Hagar replacing David Lee Roth in 1986.
Finally some Van Hager!!! This is my favorite song. But ya'll should have done the official music video with the Blue Angels
During the brief Iraq War in 1991, pilots were listening to this song before they went out on sorties to get them hyped up.
"Van Hagar" as we affectionately called them.
I loved both iterations of the band.
Such a fun song, especially with the music video that features airshow footage of the Blue Angels.
AND There’s Only One Way to Rock!
Van Halen is such a great band, I’m glad y’all got around to reacting to more of their music. I’d highly recommend songs like “Feel So Good” and “Right Now,” those are two VH songs that just stand out to me out of their time with Sammy Hagar as their lead vocalist.
