People are so judgmental about Van Hagar era Halen but I love them. I think you guys would love When It’s Love, Love Walks In, and Not Enough from the Hagar era 💕✨

He was so bored with lessons he never bothered to learn how to read the music, but was so gifted he would just listen to what the instructor played and could mimic it perfectly by ear. He won several piano competitions as a child all the while never learning how to actually read the music.

This is one that the video really enhances the message. It was really the first "serious" song this glorious party band made. The keyboard music was basically one of Eddie's " throwaways" but Sammy heard him playing it in another room and went in and started singing the lyrics he'd already come up with but hadn't put to music. One of my absolute favorite Van Halen hits.

J, you are used to Van Halen with David Lee Roth. Their sound changed significantly once Sammy Hagar came onboard to replace Roth. Despite EVH being the band leader, Sammy’s influence on their sound for the 2nd 10 years is unmistakable.
Despite experiencing both iterations, my favorite is Van Hagar (as we VH fans call it). Nearly everyone alive during that period favors one or the other more, but we almost universally love both!

    • @cking8631

Yes VH will always be David Lee Roth as the lead singer to me. Just such a dynamic personality. I liked Sammy before he joined VH and they were lucky to get him. Those are good songs too, just not the same for me that grew up in the DLR days. I almost wish they had changed the name a little, just to show they didn't ignore that there was a change. They probably hoped the fans would ignore, instead they just became a different but great band.

I favor the young, poor and hungry VH. Marshals and Kramers over Peavey and Musicman...and Fender, but I love it all. Dave reminds of my teens and Sammy reminds me of my 20s...I was 30 when Gary joined...bummer that I can not look forward more . I like Wolf, but he has not really lived up.I think he will eventually let out his inner Eddie, but he seems to try to suppress it

This song was timeless the minute it came out. Sammy really hit a new level of lyrical excellence and the music created and crafted by Eddie is just perfection. It was a great message at a time of change. The video version is worth seeking out as it ads to the message. Eddie was trying to mature in his skill as a songwriter and not just be seen as a shredder. "Dreams", "Why Can't this be Love," and "Summer Nights," are a few more classics. You know songwriting is a curious thing and there's no one way that a song gets written. It can start as a jam session or be worked up from a demo; lyrics first, music first or all together. In the case of VH Eddie and Alex worked out all of the music first and Sammy (or Dave, to give Dave due credit) had to put words to that music, and I think that Dave and Sammy did a brilliant job.

Eddie and Alex were both multi instrumentals, and EVH draws you in with the piano, Alex hits you with the drums, Mikey with the bass line, and Sammy with the message of urgency: don't wait til tomorrow to fulfill your dreams, go and do it RIGHT NOW! Eddie was classically trained on piano since he was young and was very good at it. David Lee Roth is by far my favorite Van Halen era but they had some good songs w/Sammy. Just a different vibe, more slicked out.

To really do this song full justice you need to watch the official video and read the pop-up comments the band put in the video. Great song. I grew up listening to VH with Dave on lead, but I came to really enjoy VH with Sammy up front much more.

different singer, different time, different band.....but still great. From the time I was 10, until the time I was 30, VH entertained me with 12 albums and 3 singers. i love every song on every album, I am still bummed out Eddie is gone, there will never be another like EVH, and all that performed with him, Dave , Sammy, Gary, Alex, Michael, and Wolf deserve some props as well, but EVH was the driving force

But it is not a bad album.. it is sort of like forgotten VH material… it is in my listening rotation and probably the least familiar album… give it a listen, It is not Dave. Or Sam, but it is Eddie , Al and Michael, and not a bad album 💿

This song highlights to me the Van Halen with Sammy Hagar vice David Lee Roth. Roth left because he wanted VH to be a hard rock band that featured those hard driving screeching guitar riffs and Eddie wanted to take the band into a different area, wanting to incorporate more keyboards, etc., which is what you got with the new VH. The fact that both versions of Van Halen succeeded are a testament to the talent of each of members.
