What seemed like a retreat by the Commissar was actually a feint to lure the enemy forces into a frozen lake and sink their entire armored column, putting himself at risk all the time! Truly, Commissar Cain's genius is only matched by his selfless bravery!
CAIN FACTS: Ciaphas Cain is probably a living saint now. Because not even old age and death could defeat Ciaphas Cain. Ciaphas Cain called Marneus Calgar a piece of shit to his face. And Calgar agreed. There is no Cainite school of thought in the Commissariat. There are those who listen to Ciaphas Cain's advice, and dead Commissars. Where Ciaphas Cain fights, the Inquisition cleans up after him. Saint Cain achieved something only the Dark Angels and Space Wolves have achieved - fuck with the Inquisition and live. Amberley didn't recruit Jürgen for the Inquisition because she was afraid he would put the Ordos out of business. When Tzeentch asked Kairos Fateweaver a question about Ciaphas Cain, the Oracle jumped back into the Well of Eternity. There are five stages of grief. When Ciaphas Cain hits anger, Khorne starts bargaining. Normal people fear Inquisitors. Ciaphas Cain either awes, sleeps with, or kills them. Ciaphas Cain was once told the nearest pot of tanna was on the other side of an Ork army. I don't see any Ork armies around here, do you ? Ciaphas Cain stared into the Eye of Terror. It blinked first. Jürgen once went to secure a nice room for Ciaphas Cain on an Imperial World. He came back one hour later having exposed and taken down a Tzeentchian cult. When heretics learn that Ciaphas Cain has arrived in the system, they surrender to the Inquisition. It's safer for them, and easier for everyone involved. Major Ruput Broklaw once woke up Ciaphas Cain after the Commissar had given strict orders not to be disturbed. He received the Star of Terra for his bravery and dedication to his duty. When the Thousand Sons tried to kill Ciaphas Cain, they saw Jürgen next to him, shrugged, and went home. The reason Tyranids got nerfed is because a Genestealer Patriarch tried to kill Ciaphas Cain once, and now the Hive-Mind is scared. There was a possibility Ciaphas Cain would have become a Chaos Champion. Tzeentch spent the entirety of M41 making damn sure it didn't happen, to avoid losing his job. Khorne wants Ciaphas Cain's skull. Unfortunately for the Blood God, the skull comes with the rest of Ciaphas Cain attached to it. The reason Guilliman didn't wake up until the Times of Ending was because he was waiting for Cain to die of old age so he could hog the glory. Unfortunately, reports of the Commissar's death were greatly exaggerated. When the Grey Knights aren't enough, the Ordo Malleus does not send Ciaphas Cain and his aid : they politely ask for his assistance. Gods plan. Ciaphas Cain laughs. A psyker once tried to get Ciaphas Cain to shoot himself. The Commissar dropped the laspistol and shot him instead. Ciaphas Cain and Amberley Vail once attended an Imperial gala infiltrated by sixteen different Chaos cults, three xenoists conspiracies and half a dozen Inquisitors and their retinues. The Holy Ordos call what happened next the "Night of Revelations". Cain called it a good date. Ciaphas Cain doesn't get lost in underground tunnels. Not because he has a good sense of orientation, but because the tunnels want him to get out as soon as possible. Ciaphas Cain weeps for every soldier who dies under his command. His tears are rarer than the Emperor's.

@@voxpopuli7910It sounds like you have a poor grasp of 40k’s scale. The imperium has over one million planets. There are hundreds of thousands of earth-like planets in the imperium. When I say earth-like, I mean planets that have similar technology, population, and living standards as our modern day earth in real life. There are giant hive planets with trillions of people crammed into nightmarish sci-fi slums, there are feudal planets where they live life just like we did back in the 1200’s, there are forge worlds where the population consists solely of servitors (to work the factories) and tech priests (to oversee the servitors), and there is everything in between. Most Imperial citizens will never see an alien, demon, or space marine. Many imperial citizens don’t believe that aliens exist, because they’ve never met anyone who has met anyone who has seen an alien. So not only are there movies in 40k, but there are books, tv, video games, and a huge assortment of sci-fi hobbies that people enjoy. There are probably enough movies in the Galaxy of 40k for everyone on real-life earth to watch 500 of them without any movie being watched twice
@@voxpopuli7910technology are very diverse on each planets in Warhammer 40k. Some are still in the Medieval ages, some in the WW1 ages, and some are even set in a world that looks like the Cold War era Soviet Union.
Fun fact: Cain despite always see carry boltpistol on artwork, Cain actually favor Laspistol and he is really good at it he can shoot outside of the gun optimal range
There is quite a bit of evidence that at least most of the Cain book covers are propaganda, since he's always depicted with his coat ripped to show off his bulging muscles, or carrying a bolt pistol, or a ridiculously oversized chainsword. Then there's the Greater Good cover where the fire warrior has 5 fingers, so is likely a human in costume.
Cain: "I'm the type of person people in my rank are supposed to shoot." Also Cain: *Is incredibly intelligent, competent, and compassionate* ... Yeah, seems about right for the Imperium's "Shoot this man" list.
a lot of it feels like it's self depreciation and a guilty conscience because Cain didn't "think" the right way, it seems like he makes up excuses after the fact to "justify" why what he did was cowardly even in situations where he was purely heroic. I'm sure he doesn't lie about being terrified and that makes him hate himself and cast his every action in the most negative light.
Oh, how did he put it again? By all means correct me on the quote if anyone remembers better than I do, but I THINK his statement was "Even if we were up to our chins in green-skins, Eldar, and a side of Kroot, I'd turn my back on the lot of them to kill a single Necron."
He wasn't too happy about Tyranids either, pretty much borderline panicking and demanding the regiment contact everybody they possibly could for immediate reinforcements the moment he thought they were even a possibility. It seemed pretty universal that the enemies he "feared" the most were the ones he couldn't really talk to. The Eldar, Tau, Chaos, even Orks he was fine with, at least to a certain degree. Tyranids and Necrons though, he'd avoid as much as possible. I think he even mentioned that at some point when justifying his "fear" to another commissar when the idea of going toe-to-toe with some Necrons came up.
so its *a number that is the closest to infinity scenario* but the number cancels it self in just a way that benefits comissar Caine like an glitched stat bonus to his already high specs as a scolar progenium honor member and that stat is his "*luck*"
Cain’s sword skills are underrated. He impressed inquisitors and Astartes with his skill and was both naturally gifted but also trained as though he wasn’t.
He blocked/deflected two or three strikes from a Khorne Berserker before Jurgen blasted him with a melta gun. Still very impressive as a feat though. When the berzerker charged him shouting 'blood for the blood god' he shouted back 'harriers for the cup!'
I think the key point here is: Cain is afraid all the time but still manages to do what is necessary and THAT is what makes him great in my eyes. Courage is not the abscence of fear - courage is overcoming fear.
@@kazansky22 Yes exactly! Of course a Space Marine is more powerful, but he doesn't need the kind of "courage" that an ordinary guardsman needs to fight the horrors of the galaxy.
Channeling fear can be the greatest strength. Absence of fear is definitely a great road to death or freezing from fear while aiming fear provides enhanced senses.
As I soldier I was always afraid in combat. Eventually I accepted that death was inevitable and then used that fear to fuel adrenaline production and the adrenaline let me perform at peak capacity. I think the smarter a person is the more fear they feel in combat but you know the only way to survive is to fight as hard and as smart as possible. The only way out is through.
So then, ciaphas cain was taken to meet the emperor himself on the imperial palace, he saw the emperor and he was so nervous he accidentally tripped on one of the wires and then it activated the so long forgotten button of "revive user" and then the Emperor was revived. Upon said miracle of pure bullshit, he got even more nervous that he touched another long forgotten button that stated "repair webway project". Just another day for Ciaphas Cain.
And then he accidentally repaired an STC by having it factory reset, so that all the garbage data that accumulated got wiped and it operated at peak performance.
All three of those have less personality than Cain's left nut so I'm still sticking to Cain being the main protagonist, you call Sly, Dante and the SK when you need shit to be fucked up, not when you want a good story.
When he appeared to be fleeing from a chaos warship Ciaphas Cain discovered the leagues of Voltann, it’s as if he knew they were there and would lead to the destruction of the chaos barge.
My personal favorite Cain moment was when he took out a Dark Eldar Succubus in single combat. As good a swordsman as he was, he knew after a brief exchange that he simply wasn't fast enough to keep up with her.... but when he realized her entire plan hinged on taking him back to Commoragh alive, he deliberately moved to Minecraft himself. The succubus saw it and lunged to stop him... and Cain immediately countered the reckless attack, because it had only ever been a feint to draw her in.
And it was started by soldiers from the Tallarn regiment headed by a commissar that _hated_ Cain. Tomas Beige spent half the book trying to undermine Cain’s authority and get him arrested.
We even have a quote from the book of Cain that goes: "And the Prophet Spake, FRAK THIS! Get thee behind me Deamon, for my faith is proof against thy blandishments"
Cain: My reputation is a fraud, I am just a coward Also Cain: Charges a Chaos Space Marine with only his laspistol and chainsword, and defeats him in front of his entire platoon Cain: I'm just a cowardly piece of shit, I hope nobody notices how cowardly I am
I still think Cain is the best character and story line to start a movie series. It’s an easy intro for people to get into Warhammer. I so want to see Henry Cavill play him because he’s perfect for the role. They look the same and have that same sense of humor..
Right now lets hope no one decides to make a Cain movie or series. We have too many gender swaps, Mary Sue lady bosses and emasculated men in entertainment already. If they'd make it it would probably focus on Kimberley as the bestest evah, making Cain a supporting role in his own series.
@@eleventhprimarch5303 He doesnt really have the smug cunning aura that makes Cain who he is, he played secret agent in UNCLE and acion scenes were perfect, but I don't really think he would be good Cain
You should do a video on Commissar Gaunt next. An absolutely phenomenally written character who does not get nearly the praise Cain does despite doing as much, as Cain but often with less.
"What if Cain embodies everything great about humanity?" 'Courage is not the absence of fear, but acting in spite of it' and all. So yeah, that sounds about right. Also, between his looks and his record, Ciaphus Cain feels like he's very firmly the Ash Williams of 40k.
not just that, but the Imperium is also written far less Grim derp in general in his books. Like the Imperium is still dark and awful in those, but not to the point of stupidity as it is in a lot of 40k stuff
A sad fact is that Jurgen isn't really foul smelling with unsightly dermal afflictions, people just mentally perceive him as such because their minds rebel against being in close proximity to a blank.
@@jasperzanovich2504 There was one time when he saw someone's secretary who was very much taken by him, she thought he was a pretty acceptable but he blew her off to go look at nudies on his data slate. He might have been startled, or just didn't recognize, that a lady was interested since everyone he ever met was unkind to him. She apparently didn't notice anything wrong with him...she might have been a blank too, or so low on the psychic scale that he didn't set her off. That along with what you said makes me believe that his perceived repulsiveness is really other people's psychic-minds telling them that he ain't right....it's not really him, it's them.
Cain once admitted that as soon as Jurgen dried himself off after taking a bath or shower. He would instantly start to smell again. Cain eventually stopped coercing Jurgen to take extra showers, since no one could tell.
Actually, he does have them, but most people don't even see them because his Blankness makes them instinctively keep their distance. Cain is the only one who seems to notice, which is either him having such willpower that he can actually bear to be in Jurgen's vicinity or it gives credence to the theory that Cain's a latent psyker. It doesn't help that Jurgen's bad hygiene is in part a result of people's refusal to deal with him, so he doesn't see the use of trying to be presentable, which is kinda sad, really. It also explains why Jurgen is SO ride-or-die for Cain, since he's the only person that really takes the time to know him and treat him as a person.
I like the “latent psyker” idea. Latent psykers also don’t seem to be that much effected by blanks (look at the boy Ravenor picks up who’s a latent mirror psyker and even burns out and possesses a blank over time). There also seem to be a lot of unknown latent psyker powers
I think one of the books stated that blanks are still considered psykers, so a much much stronger psyker could still overwhelm a blank. So it's not impossible that Cain is a beyond Alpha Plus, latent psyker who isn't directly affected by the blank state of Jurgen. Although, I would imagine that daemons would flock around him much more frequent if this was the case, since even a latent psyker should have a much brighter warp-presence.
@@Deckaio afaik latent psykers don’t really show on the scale. They are latent, so they don’t have any active detectable abilities. That also means they are barely effected by blanks. Latent psykers afaik would have a very normal human imprint in the warp
@@jasutinborchert4418 isn't this more because all the latent psysker we saw were considered "weak" psysker? Based on my understanding, latent by the definition of the word and not any in-universe definition, doesn't have to mean weak. But I'm way behind any WH40K lore, so I'm probably way off anyways.
@@Deckaio “latent psyker” afaik refers to psykers with inactive powers, which therefore can’t be detected normally. For example Ravenor only noticed that the boy who would later become the grey knight Hyperion was a latent psyker because he somehow managed to detect Ravenors psychic communication with Nate. This led to the assumption that the boy is a latent psyker with the passive ability of mirroring psyker abilities. However he never got detected as one before, despite being tested. So some slight reality bending, as long as it’s only focused on himself, could be a latent ability that would to the outside be perceived as extremely lucky
why normal people would reject jurgen, psykers would suffer headaches in his precense but all Cain Could feel was his smell? thats why i think that theory is shit XD
@@benjaminnorris5540 They might be. If I remember correctly from character descriptions Cain is pretty tall/beefy compared to most other humans. Plus you don't have noodle arms swinging around a chainsword.
He does say that, but by now people should realize he isn't always the most reliable narrator. He says he doesn't give a frack about the people who serve under him, but if Casteen died in front of him does anyone think he wouldn't be extremely saddened by it? His aloofness is a defense mechanism to protect his mind from the ravages of war.
@@thatromanfella8377 he was as psyker that controlled peoples minds who he came within range. he controlled one of his students turned commissars and Cain was able to free him with jurgen long enough for the kid to kill himself. Cain got his revenge for him.
I mean in the latest Cain novel a Farseer orders that Cain isn't to be killed, because if he is the Slannesh Deamon will win on that world So yeah, even Psychic Aliens bank on Cain's luck
Warlock: "I must ask this, is there a reason you have so much faith in this Mon'keigh?" Farseer: "I know it sounds mad, but this one is a rare blend of "expendable" and "invulnerable" that makes for the perfect HERO."
I love the lore on Cain and jurgen. Also Cain is an official Saint, tho he thinks it's a joke, he is actively prayed to on several planets. Also I love his favorite tactic to get people to leave him alone. He would make officials who wanted to talk with him wait in a unairconditioned room with Jurgen, forcing them the just stagnate in his foul smell. Most would leave :)
A video about Saul Tarvitz would be cool. He (rightfully) sucks off Rylanor, but that leaves Tarvitz as criminally underrated. Either that or a video on Garviel Loken and Tarik Torgaddon (the loyalist half of the Mournival)
Guy stood his ground against Dark Eldar, the same race that prides themselves on being master duelists to enjoy their victim's agony up close, and gutted the wych, the proceeded to save a planet from a Hive Fleet by luring them into a webway portal so the millions of nids could be Commoragh's problem. Course his imposter syndrome rationalizes it all as luck.
I think the thing about Cain is that...to a great extent, he's just a regular guy. A regular, 21st century human, like you or I - living in a galaxy where his available role models are men like Sebastian Yarrick, or the stormtroopers who accompany him in book two. The Imperium lauds fearlessness and utter disregard for death, so when Cain feels fear he interprets it as him being a total coward, especially if he also acts on it. It's classic imposter syndrome. He fails to live up to an impossible standard, so he judges himself harshly for the crime of being merely human.
Unfortunately by the time of the recent books he's *probably* dead and received a burial with full military honors, however faith and the warp being what they are combined with the fact that a splinter cult on Tallarn reveres him as the emperors will incarnate or sum such so it's an outside possibiloity for a ghostly/saintly commisar to show up in a future book.
Longshot theory: Cain is a Sensei, possibly several generation removed or somehow latent. It could also explain why the Emperor seems to have taken a shine to him.
@@nothingunderthemask wow, I surprised no one answered.anyone. a sensei is a son or daughter of the Emperor. No, the Emperor children. No THE Emperor's CHILDREN. It all old Rouge trader first edition lore.
@@nothingunderthemask Yep. Again this was/is pretty old lore,. But the the Emperor was rather "busy" and throughout the Ages and had many sons.and daughters. Most was normal, but a chosen few had a bunch of the Emperor 's such as immortality, physic power, limited shapeshifing, etc. If you hadn't heard of them, it because they (the inquisition aka GW) "probably" got rid of them.in the 3rd edition. Also, it kinda funny you said "Emperor nuts"
There are two phrases that emphasize Cain as a person. “Courage is not the absence of Fear- but rather continuing on despite it.” “The successes of the Astra Militarum, are not won by a single hero, but by those millions beside him” Sure he may be cowardly, but when the chips are down he does go in, and he very rarely wins totally alone. Also my headcannon is that Cain is the reincarnation of Ollanius Pious and has the emperor’s blessing.
I would say that Cain is the embodiment of True Courage since one can only be truly brave when he/she is scared but faces the problem regardless even if its the warmaster himself.
According to amberly, Cain did have nightmares that woke him in the middle of the night and much of his behavior is congruent symptoms of PTSD, albeit on a lower level
@@raistlarn yup and they touch on the regiments fighting nids prior to the book itself. However I want to see full tyranid action. The gsc in the book were alright but definitely not full scale invasion
Traitor's Hand and Death or Glory are my favorite out of the series with Duty Calls being close. I still laugh when Cain insults a world eater in melee range.
@@QuantemFearyeah, and there are also several points in the books where he vividly describes being haunted by nightmares, especially of Tyranids, the Slaneshii wych who almost stole his soul and most of all, necrons.
Almost definitely. I believe that this survivors guilt is what actually fuels his imposter syndrome. The immense guilt of watching so many good people die, often as a direct result of them protecting him... "Emperor knows, far better men than me have fallen on the field of battle while I looked after my own miserable skin, on more occasions than I care to count"
This was sort of adressed by Amberleys editorial note: The hardest critic of Cain, is Cain himself. So when all stories of him are sourced from his own biography, then the whole aspect of cowardice is something he attributes to himself. It is very obvious when he describes himself as a coward as an excuse for a smart and reasonable action in a given deadly situation. As for his daemonic resistance, I think it is something more akin to will tempering. His own thoughts of Slaneeshi corruption is that yes he likes to gamble, drink and all other vice, but in moderation that does not interfere with his duty. He actively resists excess of vice, and we all know that chaos gods are all about extreme excess of certain emotions. This alone should make the Emperor proud, since Cain is morally close to the humanity thet big E envisioned.
Totally agree with you people that haven't actually read the books are missing a trick easily someone the best writing as well as great lore moments and fills out the universe nicely
The funny part is he is actually a pretty damn skilled swordsman and marksman, granted to be inducted into the commissar ranks you pretty much have the natural skills to become a space marine. Quite possibly one of the most unique characters in Wh 40k setting and his books are such a fun change from the constant grim dark insanity.
I agree, Cain never seamed to be the cowered he thinks he is, he has, on many occasions, and with intent, put himself into danger for others. He has done this many many times, and while he might come up with excuses, he keeps doing it. His luck though... almost seems to be BAD luck, as how he gets out of situations is by being smart and cool headed, NOT just because the guy trying to snipe him sneezes at the last moment.
Quick note about Cain being the imperium’s “the most decorated war hero”: that honor goes to Sly Marbo, having been awarded the star of terra on multiple occasions
I believe that Cain's success is a combination of three factors. First is Cain's own skill amd courage (along with Jurgen's help). Second is a little help of one or more shards of the emperor. The emperor has to cover the entire galaxy and before the fall of Cadia he likely tried his best to get some people in places where they can help. As Cain survived and triunfed against the enemies of the Imperium the Big E gave more help but also put him in the way of increasing scary things. The thirds is that more and more people started to admire and worship him. If the humans in the Tau Empire managed to manifest a new minor god in the Warp imagine how much power would Cain would gain from the faith of billions of humans. I really hope he is still alive in the setting. Even if he isn't we could use a male living saint, imagine all his badassery but with wings and warp holy magic.
Newly resurrected Saint Cain flops around with his new wings...and accidentally teleports and heals Primarch Sanguinius fresh from the Horus Heresy while simultaneously lobotomizing all the Tyranids in the local space sector: Saint Cain used Splash! It was VERY EFFECTIVE!!! Somehow...? Blood Angels: Sanguinius LIVES?!? What in the God Emperor's name?! Saint Cain: Wing cramp! Wing cramp! Wing cramp! Owowowowow...
I like to think Cain is alive out there in the 40k universe somewhere living quitely and happily with Amberley checking in once and awhile to spend time with him as a way to relax.
I think the coward reputation mainly comes from his own harshness toward what he sees as is own moral weakness. Showing he sometimes sees himself as such as he realise he has fear and very human selfishness to overcome. He feels that fear very strongly as he confess, he sometimes try to avoid danger in very unheroic ways and he definitely has a shelfish part of him that shows up and he really gives to much credit to all of it in his own diary. It also show that he indeed has quite high moral standards and judges his human weakness according to them. Plus he's witty, funny with a cinycal hunour and has a low taste for idiots and that makes him very much likable. And that definitely part of the charm of the caracter for it makes the diary both funny and interesting. Plus it goes with the idea that true heroism is overcoming your own shortcomings no matter how hard you can morally judge yourself, so making him a true hero after all.
Agreed he’s one of the very best commissar characters Written about by GW and the book series is awesome too…. Hope he’s still alive and kicking - another book would be sweet too
He is sadly dead, dying of old age (the absolute madlad) and being buried with full military honours. He's still listed as missing in action by the Munitorum though, as after miraculously reappearing after being presumed dead countless times they just fully gave up XD On a more somber note, I believe the entire framing device of the books, Inquisitor Amberly Vail editing and annotating his personal memoirs, is actually her way of mourning him, her one true love and a good friend. Hits me right in the feels...
I wonder if charging head long into everything is his PTSD. As you said him running away on the artillery line lead to something more dangerous then orks.. so maybe his PTSD won't let him run anymore as he is scared that what is behind him is worse then what is infront?
I am quitting the hobby due to personal reasons. Thx Majorkill for getting me into it. I will be returning a few years down the line. God bless your soul.
Jurgen didnt want to let Cain go and attack a Genestealer nest with basically a suicide squad. Instead he asked politely to go with him cause he didnt trust the other members of the team. He was also on gunpoint by a fucked up Inquisitor who told him to lower his gun, which he did but not before Cain told him it is okay to do so. Gunner Jurgen is one of if not the most loyal friend and subordinate an officer can get. Had me in tears a couple if times during the books.
If i recall, isn't the entire point of Cain's character that HE is the only who doesn't think himself as a hero? By all means, him acting in spite of fear shows genuine bravery and he cares for his troops (unlike every other commissar), so in every respect he is a hero through and through. However, he is also so ashamed of his own fear that he beats himself down over it needlessly and cruelly, scolding himself over his perceived shady morals when really those are just excuses me makes to explain away his own bravery.
Cain, Jurgen and the Valhallan's are the reason I got into 40k. Man is a straight up pimp that has enough awareness to stay alive way longer then he had any right doing. Great video mate!
One of the bits I dig is how Cain seems to get buffer on every book cover, like, it's clear they're propaganda posters seeing as he specifically points out he uses a las pistol and why, but they always show him with bolt pistols
Any man, who says he is not afraid as you go into combat is the man you get several meters from. In combat, fear can be mastered but most of all it keeps you alive.
I think Cain is coward, but his skill set is top notch and extremely lucky, but as you said MajorKill, Emperor showed him opportunity and Cain have brain and skill set to take it and use it to his best ability and his abilities are S-level. His state of Hero is well earned
You know how it’s amazing when the scared guy finally grows some balls and get shit done and become a hero despite it all? That’s Cain’s entire personality
Thus is similar to my theory about Han Solo. He is VERY force sensitive, but only at a base instinctive level. This explains Obi Wan's knowing smirk, and his survival of his many adventures, like making blind hyperjumps, and being able to calculate said blind jumps WITHOUT A COMPUTER!
Cain and Jurgen story is very similar to King Authur and Merlin. Authur was the best duelist in all of Camelot, was worried to let his people down and was destined for greatness. While Merlin worked from behind the scene as magic was forbidden and did everything discretely so he seem pretty unremarkable but actually saved Authur from countless deaths.
YES! Thank you so much! I requested it during a livestream you had not long ago... you just made my day. And you're right.. the books are a GREAT read and the audiobooks are the BEST NARRATED AUDIOBOOKS
I love Cain for the simple duality of man that he has going on, if you listen to his words he says he’s a lucky coward only looking after himself, but if you look at the actions that Cain has taken he’s genuinely one of the best human combatants in history.
One of the best quotes from Cain's little book describes Cains survival. "Paranoia is a comforting state of mind. If you think they are out to get you, it means you think you matter."
He did have one little bit of PTSD, *sorta*. There was one point he was on an asteroid, if memory serves, and people were disappearing. He had an absolute fear of necrons, imagining 'metal men coming through the walls' or some such. It's been a while since I read it, so might be a little off.
@@mikewaterfield3599 Yeah but I just think calling it all accidental undervalues how competent he actually was. There is quite a bit of evidence that at least most of the Cain book covers are propaganda, since he's always depicted with his coat ripped to show off his bulging muscles, or carrying a bolt pistol, or a ridiculously oversized chainsword. Then there's the Greater Good cover where the fire warrior has 5 fingers, so is likely a human in costume.

... Yeah, seems about right for the Imperium's "Shoot this man" list.
Sad
He has a strange self hatred syndrome.
a lot of it feels like it's self depreciation and a guilty conscience because Cain didn't "think" the right way, it seems like he makes up excuses after the fact to "justify" why what he did was cowardly even in situations where he was purely heroic. I'm sure he doesn't lie about being terrified and that makes him hate himself and cast his every action in the most negative light.
Not cowardice just cautious
He obviously is a worshipper of Tzeentch. Otherwise, he'd be stupid, incompetent, and callous.
The only thing Cain fears so much he'll order a retreat is the necrons, the rest he'll just deal with it despite being frakking terrified.
To be fair, necrons are a threatlevel for the astartes. Retreating is the only correct course of action.
Oh, how did he put it again? By all means correct me on the quote if anyone remembers better than I do, but I THINK his statement was "Even if we were up to our chins in green-skins, Eldar, and a side of Kroot, I'd turn my back on the lot of them to kill a single Necron."
Believe it's the Flayed Ones that really scares the crap out of him... I mean... reasonable phobia...
Was it because of the Pariahs, or the Flayed Ones? Both are nightmare fuel in themselves.
Ciaphas Cain is so unlucky it cancels out on sheer unluckiness.
When your luck stack drops so low that reality hits an error and sets it all the way to max

A sad fact is that Jurgen isn't really foul smelling with unsightly dermal afflictions, people just mentally perceive him as such because their minds rebel against being in close proximity to a blank.
I have always assumed that is the case since his "halitosis" seems to exactly overlap with his anti-psyker aura but is it ever truly confirmed?

@@DVAcme if Cain were to be a latent psyker he would SUFFER in jurgen vicinity XD

@@Deckaio “latent psyker” afaik refers to psykers with inactive powers, which therefore can’t be detected normally. This led to the assumption that the boy is a latent psyker with the passive ability of mirroring psyker abilities. However he never got detected as one before, despite being tested.
"Emperor knows, far better men than me have fallen on the field of battle while I
looked after my own miserable skin, on more occasions than I care to count"
I'm 3 books in on Cain right now. Jurgun is an absolute badass. My absolutely favorite duo in the 40k universe.
Fuck yeah one of my favourite guys in 40k finally getting the recognition he deserves. Great video Major!
Totally agree with you people that haven't actually read the books are missing a trick easily someone the best writing as well as great lore moments and fills out the universe nicely
Ahh yes, Cain the Chad Lad. His back must be utterly broken by now from carrying the imperium on his back for so long.
Well Amberley must know all about Cain's sword skills
😅
In combat or in “combat?”
@@HeIsAnAli Both
@@HeIsAnAliFirst in combat, then in "combat"
🎶CI-CI-CIAPHAS CAIN, HERO OF THE IMPERIUM!!!🎶
The fact that we still don't have a official Cain model still is a tragedy
TRUE!!!!
Would be imballansed)
Quick note about Cain being the imperium’s “the most decorated war hero”: that honor goes to Sly Marbo, having been awarded the star of terra on multiple occasions
I'm just imagining Cain becoming a living saint and appearing all goldy like and holy looking and thinking to himself
"Well, frak"
Newly resurrected Saint Cain flops around with his new wings...and accidentally teleports and heals Primarch Sanguinius fresh from the Horus Heresy while simultaneously lobotomizing all the Tyranids in the local space sector:
Saint Cain used Splash!
Mood kindred.
Agreed he’s one of the very best commissar characters Written about by GW and the book series is awesome too…. Hope he’s still alive and kicking - another book would be sweet too
He is sadly dead, dying of old age (the absolute madlad) and being buried with full military honours.
He's still listed as missing in action by the Munitorum though, as after miraculously reappearing after being presumed dead countless times they just fully gave up XD
On a more somber note, I believe the entire framing device of the books, Inquisitor Amberly Vail editing and annotating his personal memoirs, is actually her way of mourning him, her one true love and a good friend. Hits me right in the feels...
I wonder if charging head long into everything is his PTSD.
As you said him running away on the artillery line lead to something more dangerous then orks.. so maybe his PTSD won't let him run anymore as he is scared that what is behind him is worse then what is infront?
He actually suffers from severe nightmares as said by Vail because he would wake her up in the middle of the night from screaming
I am quitting the hobby due to personal reasons. Thx Majorkill for getting me into it. I will be returning a few years down the line. God bless your soul.
You really don't have to play the tabletop to enjoy the lore. I certainly don't play or paint.

I know. Sadly I will have little time to do so. I have to focus on my fiance who is unwell.
@@ladosdominik1506 I recommend audiobooks. Not just for 40k, just in general.
@@ladosdominik1506 ayoo she good?
Jurgen didnt want to let Cain go and attack a Genestealer nest with basically a suicide squad. Instead he asked politely to go with him cause he didnt trust the other members of the team. He was also on gunpoint by a fucked up Inquisitor who told him to lower his gun, which he did but not before Cain told him it is okay to do so. Gunner Jurgen is one of if not the most loyal friend and subordinate an officer can get. Had me in tears a couple if times during the books.
Jurgen is the real hero who gets no credit due to being ugly and stinky
If i recall, isn't the entire point of Cain's character that HE is the only who doesn't think himself as a hero? By all means, him acting in spite of fear shows genuine bravery and he cares for his troops (unlike every other commissar), so in every respect he is a hero through and through. However, he is also so ashamed of his own fear that he beats himself down over it needlessly and cruelly, scolding himself over his perceived shady morals when really those are just excuses me makes to explain away his own bravery.
Desperately want Cavil to star as Ciaphus in the upcoming 40k series.
Inquisitor: You have the best luck in the worst way
Cain: "I'm just glad to have any luck at all"
Any man, who says he is not afraid as you go into combat is the man you get several meters from. In combat, fear can be mastered but most of all it keeps you alive.
To quote a very zen demigod he is “ a hero who insisted with every breath that he was anything but a hero.”
Reading about Cain and he is truly a great hero as he does the right thing (even if he thinks hes selfish) despite his fears
I was getting withdrawals but the video crack about plastic crack dealer delivers
I think this was confirmed a while ago
@@HollowedKnight66 Only if Lucas himself has said so. I don't consider any of the Dishit to even be Star Wars.
Cain: *stumbles upon Tyranid ruffians*
Tyranids: "Uhhhh... I can explain."
IDK about immune to PTSD, he's definitely not OK when it comes to Necrons
The first Cain book I read was definitely one of my favorites
the Emperor playing the sims with his soldiers
Cain and Jurgen story is very similar to King Authur and Merlin. Authur was the best duelist in all of Camelot, was worried to let his people down and was destined for greatness. While Merlin worked from behind the scene as magic was forbidden and did everything discretely so he seem pretty unremarkable but actually saved Authur from countless deaths.
YES! Thank you so much! I requested it during a livestream you had not long ago... you just made my day. And you're right.. the books are a GREAT read and the audiobooks are the BEST NARRATED AUDIOBOOKS
Cain and Gaunt are the two Commisars I enjoy following…
I love Cain for the simple duality of man that he has going on, if you listen to his words he says he’s a lucky coward only looking after himself, but if you look at the actions that Cain has taken he’s genuinely one of the best human combatants in history.
Blackadder and Baldric :)
100%
One of the best quotes from Cain's little book describes Cains survival.
"Paranoia is a comforting state of mind. If you think they are out to get you, it means you think you matter."
He did have one little bit of PTSD, *sorta*. There was one point he was on an asteroid, if memory serves, and people were disappearing. He had an absolute fear of necrons, imagining 'metal men coming through the walls' or some such. It's been a while since I read it, so might be a little off.
Cain is so cool, he’s the 2nd officer to hear marbo speak
Yet it’s all accidental. He’s really just trying to not get killed. Hell his girlfriend is an inquisitor and his BFF is a null with bad hygiene.
I wouldn’t call it accidental
@@jeffgreff4019 surviving the shuttle crash certainly was, and the lictors that followed.
@@mikewaterfield3599 Yeah but I just think calling it all accidental undervalues how competent he actually was.
