It started as "Well, seems elite enough" when they decimated the cultists effortlessly, but then the Daemon host appears and oh man the sequence was the indomitable human spirit kicking in. They died but they did to save and buy some time for Eisenhorn and his team; basically holding back.
That bit about the navy seals having the names of American heroes got me thinking. Now I just want a spec ops group with the madmen of American history like John Paul Jones, John Brown, and Douglas MacArthur.
Douglas macarthur while he might been cool during ww2 he was kinda a scumbag, there was his failure in korea, and then after his retirement he pushed for less veterans benefits

"Chainmail" was a ruleset for incuding Fantasy elements in Napoleonic Wargames, And that is what directly inspired D&D. Warhammer Fantasy Battles Started cause Games Workshop had the UK license for D&D and they came up with it as a way to assemble your D&D mini collection into a whole army. Then 40k Rouge Trader was Warhammer Fantasy Battles "IN SPACE" So, it all comes Full Circle.

They were an entirely self sufficient extremely well equipped human army that could quickly and easily replenish its numbers and had equipment for pretty much any kind of combat. They were nearly as dangerous as an astartes fleet when they went rogue. So the astartes got cut down into chapters because the imperium was run by primarchs after the heresy and they were seen as the perfection of human warriors by the emperor. The solar auxilia had no such protections so instead of being cut down into smaller formations they were outright removed as a pattern of the imperial army.

Fun fact - in Dark Crusade, if Tau are the one that beat the Imperial Guard, in their epilogue there is an info that after the fall of Victory Bay to the Tau some Karskins managed to escape to the wilds and they started a guerilla war against the xenos. Imagine a book about them in a scenario like this :)
Fun fact: Stormtroopers that make it out of the Schola Progenium and into a guard regiment are actually "rejects" - the best of the best get taken into an Inquisitorial retinue instead. Imagine, if the rank-and-file stormtroopers are this elite, how much better are the ones that work for the Inquisition? Source: "Caves of Ice" by Sandy Mitchell (2nd Ciaphas Cain novel).
I think the Lucifer Blacks have to be my favorite elite guard regiment. Too bad there isn’t too much lore about them, other than that a Lucifer Black sergeant was able to land a hit on Alpharius himself.
One of my favorite "Elite Troops" of humanity are the Lucifer Blacks, they caught on to Alpharius and thought "Nah I'd win." even though they didn't but one did manage to land a blow on him. They are as close to a Custodes a human can get.
In terms of skill alone to make a wash down comparison. If the regular guard are equivalent to regular frontline battle brothers of the astartes, The Scions are the equivalent to the Grey Knights/Death Watch and the Lucifer Blacks are the Custodians.

Harakoni need more lore! What we have is so badass. these fuckers are basically the U.S. Army Rangers during WW2 but with Plasma guns and against flesh tearing horrors! They got two modes: Hot drop directly into the most well defended zones like a Helldiver, and then just hold out for as long as you can until the main force can relieve you. Or guerilla warfare where they are dropped behind the lines and expected to act like Catachans, minus the genetic superiority.
Sly Marbo likes going on enthusiastic walks in the countryside for relaxation. Still leaving mountains of corpses in his wake and usually he only has a pocket knife on him.
My custom regiment Storntroopers are called “Tannith scouts” (obviously based on the tannith First n only) and i imsgine the deep strike as them being camoflsuged in position ahead if time for ambushes
Kasrkin are also my favorit stormtroopers. There is another epic Kasrkin moment in the lore, namly in the book "cadian blood", where a Kasrkin seargent climbs up a chaos dreadnought with his broken arm and proceeds to kill the dreadnought by shooting in the eyeslit with his hot shot laspistol!

Fun fact: at the siege of Kraks Khornate space marines arived and started killing the death korps of Krieg but after the death korps reorganised a bit they fought the khornate berserkers in MELEE COMBAT and WON by sheer will and determination

Krieg came first as a concept (IG 3rd Ed Codex vs Codex: Armaggedon), but the first Krieg models were indeed repainted Steel Legion

Stormtroopers are the Duke Nukem to the Space Marines' Doomguy.
I imagine they're a lot more respected by Space Marines than most guardsmen. Idk how much they team up, but it would make sense cuz they could keep up with Marines better than other troops
I saw the new Kasrkin minis painted up like imperial stormtroopers a bit ago and it looked *fantastic*
I like the old school Inquisitorial Stormtroopers the most.

Kasrkin’s are my favorite special forces. I always remember one occasion where I think a squad of kasrkins took down a dreadnought and made it look easy
