Just followed your video to change oil on my rx350. Your instructions were better than the pro mechanics, plus your calm methodical voice is exactly what we all needed to hear. I swear every time I hear Scotty screech I die a little inside.
I'm watching this because I read that the dealers use the cheapest oil they can buy and sometimes skip replacing the gaskets, That was a truly excellent tutorial, your video gives me the confidence to do this on my own, the reset was much easier than anticipated, Thanks!
Nice vid! Really helped me do the job. Thanks! Some comments from my experience. 8:24 and 10:45 The oil filter housing has 3 tabs on one side and 1 tab on the other (180 deg opposite) side; the oil filter housing socket has matching slots. Make sure to match them up because removal of the housing is next to impossible unless the housing and socket are exactly matched. As Rob noted, after most commercial oil changes the oil filter housing is way, WAY over-torqued, certainly much more than 18 ft.-lbs and removal can be a major PITA. I had to use a breaker bar to get enough leverage to start unscrewing it. 6:00 I attached some plastic tubing (from excess I had from lawn sprinkler work) to the provided plastic fitting to drain the oil filter housing. Adequate workaround if you don't have the metal fitting he uses. 4:40 and 5:55 About 20 years ago I started using oil drain plug valves on my vehicles and it's a nice feature that I don't have to get oil all over my hands any more when I remove the drain pan plug. On some types there's a "nipple" where plastic tubing can be attached to prevents drips (or wind spray as in this vid). Fumoto is a big brand but there are others out there. Drain plug valves are also fantastic if you over-fill the sump and have to remove just a little (you're correct in wondering how I know that, LOL).
The odd thing is that Motivx now make their oil filter removal socket so that it does NOT engage those tabs. On their Amazon listing for the MX2320 the images state "old style wrench can cause broken tabs" and "engages only the top fluted portion of the filter housing".
FYI, you forgot to detach old washer from oil pan. You put double washer. You use flat screw driver to take out easily. Also, side note of the Toyota type oil filter wrench to be getting stuck sometime due to your warm engine oil, use flat screw driver works the best. I do this for my 2013 IS and 2016 RX.
I noticed that also... all that fancy tools but forgot to remove old washer. Also draining filter cup for making less mess is not really true. I just partially unscrew the filter housing and let it drain then just remove it directly in oil catch pan. Watching this video seems that I make less mess by skipping using that drain hose.
@@YesNo018draining the canister absolutely makes for less mess. Loosening the canister to drain it will soak the outside of it with oil. That’s not messier to you?? Though the hose is unnecessary, just use the plastic drain valve that comes with the filter

Where'd you get the funnel? A trick to get more old oil and sludge accumulating at the bottom of the pan when you do an oil chg is to add a quart of fresh oil with the drain plug still out.

The Car Care Nut and other channels recommend 5,000 mile intervals if you want the engine to last longer, despite what the owner's manual states. My 09 Camry 3.5L oil has been changed at 5,000 miles and has 356,000 miles on it and does not use any oil.
Great video, not totally surprised Lexus used a plastic canister housing for cost savings but I would get a metal one. Also surprised the bottom of the vehicle wasn't buttoned up in the front.
It is not for cost savings, in case you do a cross thread, you could possibly damage the engine housing, in this case the bakelite cap can take the damage and be replaced

Awesome vid. One recommendation I would give is upgrade the oil filter housing to an aluminum one. I think yours is the plastic one? Those tend to crack, especially if you go to those express oil change places. They over torque it and crack the housing. Again, not required, just a nice upgrade! Keep up the great work!
Today I brought my 2016 Lexus to Dealer. They are recommend me a rear brake rotor cut and replace rear brake pad at $450. Is this sound too much money? also they are doing an aligment at $280. is that too much for wheel alignment?
I'm assuming this is a USA dealer and us dollar quoted. I'd shop around at maybe a toyota dealer or independent shop. I'm sure the work is good but my opinion price is high.
I haven't looked up all the scheduled maintenance for the RX till 60k but you could always look at an independent shop costs. Unless brakes are included it may be on the high side.

Those tend to crack, especially if you go to those express oil change places. They over torque it and crack the housing. Again, not required, just a nice upgrade! Keep up the great work!
yes. we encountered that exact issue so we did a video on it later in time ruclips.net/video/2m2HKr35rqU/видео.html
Anyone used Penzoil 0W-20 Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic Oil for these vehicles?
What are your thoughts on the 60.000 mile $1200 Lexus dealership maintenance?
I haven't looked up all the scheduled maintenance for the RX till 60k but you could always look at an independent shop costs. Unless brakes are included it may be on the high side.
Thank you for the very thorough video. For 2019 NX300 F Sport you use the same oil filter 04152-YZZA & drain plug washer? Where did you get the torq specs? Are the torq specs for the RX350 same as the NX300 F Sport? Thanks Rob
I found them online via a service manual and also motivx site to confirm.
It should be the same across the board for Toyota/Lexus.
I would also consider the aluminum housing replacement for peace of mind

@@RobDaman thanks
Hi will this method be the same on 2015 rx350?
Hi,
It'll be a similar concept but may not be exactly the same spots.
Rob how much for all the parts and to do the oil change for someone who needs to get all the stuff together to do the job.
My local Lexus dealer wants $90 to change it out
What do you think? Do it myself ?...
It's not a hard job and total parts would be close to that but you'll have the tools so your cost next time would be $30 ish.
here's the list...
you need that oil filter wrench. The other 2 are nice to have too but not as critical.

can I do the oil change with no jack?
You mean getting on the ramps or in general? If it's ramps it's no. I just find it easier.
Can this also apply to lexus es350 2019?
Hi yes but the locations of drain may be different slightly as well as covers. The tools n process are similar.. I've worked on 3 different cars w same steps
@@RobDaman appreciate the response i love your videos iv never tried to change oil myself, just bought a lexus es350 2019 this is very helpful thank you 🙏🏻

Jenna Mendez hi. I have links for it in this video’a description
Lovely Video clip! Excuse me for the intrusion, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you tried - Parlandealey Vanish Ringworm Process (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is an awesome one off guide for revealing how to repair your vehicle minus the headache. Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate got astronomical results with it.
How is fuel efficiency on this thing compare to new 2019 rav4??
And reliable??
instaBlaster...
@@alanh8101 reliability is probably better, fit and finish is definitely better, fuel economy is worse, but it is apples and oranges, the RX is huge compared to the RAV 4. The RAV 4 compares more to the NX .
Unless I missed it in the video you never removed the old crush washer before installing the new one...
I did my drain plug to 27 ft lbs. will that be ok?
You'll be fine
Super good video. Thanks!
Question: are those rubber ramps available on Amazon? If not, where did you get those from?
i got em here a long time ago and still hold up

Just ordered these ramps.I got them down to 105.00 each after customs charges and shipping from Canada
Love your video! Where did you get that ramp?
