- This video is about RX350 oil change. I was able to use the same oil, parts and tools that I use on my Toyota Tacoma. This makes life so much simpler!

#lexus #oil change #rx350
Just followed your video to change oil on my rx350. Your instructions were better than the pro mechanics, plus your calm methodical voice is exactly what we all needed to hear. I swear every time I hear Scotty screech I die a little inside.
Thanks for the positive feedback.
I'm watching this because I read that the dealers use the cheapest oil they can buy and sometimes skip replacing the gaskets, That was a truly excellent tutorial, your video gives me the confidence to do this on my own, the reset was much easier than anticipated, Thanks!
The best oil change video for Lexus RX on youtube. The explanation is clear, and the camera is decent.
Nice vid! Really helped me do the job. Thanks! Some comments from my experience.
8:24 and 10:45 The oil filter housing has 3 tabs on one side and 1 tab on the other (180 deg opposite) side; the oil filter housing socket has matching slots. Make sure to match them up because removal of the housing is next to impossible unless the housing and socket are exactly matched. As Rob noted, after most commercial oil changes the oil filter housing is way, WAY over-torqued, certainly much more than 18 ft.-lbs and removal can be a major PITA. I had to use a breaker bar to get enough leverage to start unscrewing it.
6:00 I attached some plastic tubing (from excess I had from lawn sprinkler work) to the provided plastic fitting to drain the oil filter housing. Adequate workaround if you don't have the metal fitting he uses.
4:40 and 5:55 About 20 years ago I started using oil drain plug valves on my vehicles and it's a nice feature that I don't have to get oil all over my hands any more when I remove the drain pan plug. On some types there's a "nipple" where plastic tubing can be attached to prevents drips (or wind spray as in this vid). Fumoto is a big brand but there are others out there. Drain plug valves are also fantastic if you over-fill the sump and have to remove just a little (you're correct in wondering how I know that, LOL).
thanks for the detailed feedback!
The odd thing is that Motivx now make their oil filter removal socket so that it does NOT engage those tabs. On their Amazon listing for the MX2320 the images state "old style wrench can cause broken tabs" and "engages only the top fluted portion of the filter housing".
FYI, you forgot to detach old washer from oil pan. You put double washer. You use flat screw driver to take out easily. Also, side note of the Toyota type oil filter wrench to be getting stuck sometime due to your warm engine oil, use flat screw driver works the best. I do this for my 2013 IS and 2016 RX.
It's good to see mistakes made so we can be aware
I noticed that also... all that fancy tools but forgot to remove old washer. Also draining filter cup for making less mess is not really true. I just partially unscrew the filter housing and let it drain then just remove it directly in oil catch pan. Watching this video seems that I make less mess by skipping using that drain hose.
Awesome video, thank you Rob! Been changing my oil all of my life. Have a 2000 4Runner, 2005 Sequoia (RIP), 2019 Sequoia, and a 2006 Land Cruiser. The wifes 2017 RX 350 was a new animal. Appreciate your help!
Great, detailed how-to video, thanks for sharing.
Cool ramps. Great tools. I would highly recommend putting blocks or some time of stopper behind the rear tires. Even with the E break on, that would be a rough way to die.
whats the ramp called
I always like to view RUclips before I attempt any mx on a vehicle. Glad I watched this one. Very clear and informative.
Thank you very much for this video! You're very thorough, clear, and precise with all of the informative; really appreciate you!
thanks for the compliment.
Thanks for the detailed video. I followed it today to do the oil change on my 2016.
Thank you for the tutorial! Just finished my 2018. 👍👍👍
Great video , I like the motiv products , I have the oil filter wrench , Funnel & 24 mm socket from them for our 2015 IS 250 .... Now I'll be using it for our 2021 Rx 350 when the factory oil changes are up . Thanks for the video
I can certainly do my oil changes now, after watching your video! Nice job!
Thank you for all of what you did. I ended up ordering everything in your link as well.
Nice! Now I just have to get the RX350 to change oil
Hi Rob
This was very helpful.
Its virtually the same process for the IS 250/350 all years & as you rightly observe, minus all the plastic covers!
That oil filter drain tube is excellent to stop a mess, im getting one!!!
Thanks ::))
Mike
Glad to help
Nice job Rob. I ordered the funnel/filter wrench kit as oil changes should not leave a lingering effect on your driveway.
Thanks for watching
Great video. Thank you
It is very useful and simple. I do not trust the servicemen for changing the oil. I have seen many different cases, like hitting my radiator for opening the oil filter for the Toyota that I had and not changing any oil and oil filter and claiming it is done.
I prefer to it myself.
Great video and I really liked your tips. Thanks for making it.
Many thanks for the very informative video. Now I am confident it was changed correctly.
I don't know why they couldn't put the filters on top like on German cars. Makes it easier and less messy. Cool video thanks for posting and for showing the tools as well.
Japanese people are not tall enough to reach into the engine bay
Great video. I do like the tools you use for pouring oil and draining oil from oil filter housing. I am getting those for sure.
Thanks for watching! 👍
Get a Fram cartridge. Comes with o-rings and a plastic tool. You can add hose if you want.
Super thorough video. Just ordered motiv kit. Thanks and God bless.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video, that oil funnel is awesome!
It really is!
Great job. One suggestion would be loosen the main cartridge, but keep your drain tube connected and you’ll find it after turning the main cartridge. A few turns more will come out of your drain tube.
Great vid man. You made an easy job stay an easy job. I didn’t have one of the tools
Hi Rob, this is a useful video for people, in particular I liked the tool with tubing for draining the filter! One thing I would point out is that its not safe to get under the car without jack stands or a jack under the car as a second (back-up) form of support.
First time i oil changed my RX 2017. Used to bring to Dealership for the past 5 yrs. My engine sounds louder than normal. Last few days. I kinda just noticing my idling is higher. Like first start 1000 rpm. After 10 mins drive now is bout 900. On the third bar. I used oils 0W20 sae Mobil 1 advance fuel full synthetic
Just finished changing oil on a 2009 Camry using the motivX tools , makes the job fun especially that funnel , thanks again for awesome video
Ya love that funnel. Can go full pour.
Thanks for watching 👍
You can use your thumb and index finger to squeeze the oring off without using a pick.
Awesome video thanks! At 11:46 it looks like there is some debris on the filter and then he puts it into the housing. Make sure your filters are clean before hand!
Did my first oil change using this video - thank you!!
Glad it helped!
Awesome vid. One recommendation I would give is upgrade the oil filter housing to an aluminum one. I think yours is the plastic one? Those tend to crack, especially if you go to those express oil change places. They over torque it and crack the housing. Again, not required, just a nice upgrade! Keep up the great work!
yes. we encountered that exact issue so we did a video on it later in time ruclips.net/video/2m2HKr35rqU/видео.html
I noticed you showed 1 cartridge socket and switched it to MotiveX like Magic 😂
Very helpful video thanks buddy
No problem 👍
Thank you, Rob
Thank you
Nice Job. Thank you very much for your help.
Excellent! Thank you for a very detailed information.
Great!
Thanks for great video . I did my first oil change like you were there. Lol
Glad it helped
Very good video indeed. Maybe tell us what happens after you reset the oil maintenance schedule, i.e at what mileage before the remainder will let you know again. at 10k or 20k? Thanks, Rob.
every 5k the maintenance light pops up. the recommended oil change interval is every 10k.
Thanks man , good job
thanks for watching
Great job, very helpful
Glad to hear it!
How much oil does 2012 RX350 need to change? 7quarter?6quarter?
Great video with some good tips. Thank you sir.
Amazing
Thank you!!!!!!!
Thank you for your video.
thanks for watching
Thank you for sharing very useful information 🍀☘️
Thank you for the video!!
My pleasure!
Remember to use wheel chocks on rear wheels before going under the car.
Thanks for this video! very detailed, I apprecite it :)
You're very welcome!
Is Mobil one better than Toyota Oil??
Thanks, great info!
The bottom cap is just to reduce the oil messy. Can we just ignore the bottom cap and open the whole filter instead?
yes and it'll be very messy as you stated
Thanks man for the video
Where did you buy the ramps?
Thanks so much
Any time
Thanks for the information
Thanks for the video!!!!
I am very interested in knowing about the 2017 RX350 Lexus SUV automatic transmission fluid change and flush. One or two videos show how it is done but the steps are not very clear. Could you please make a thorough and clear one for the benefits of the readers? Thank you very much for sharing your expertise and experience.
I ended up trading in the RX for a LX due to expanded family. If I recall it's "lifetime" fluid but I do understand the concern as it can't be forever truly.
Can you use European oil to Lexus like Liqui Molly?
I’m trying to get a Rx 350 2015 but first I need to get some info I would like to know how much for an a oil change for this vehicle
your rpm is 1000+ isnt it too high while car s been warmed up?
Great job !
Great video. I don’t know why I got tickled, when you were wagging your finger under the car.
Lol…. This us easier than changing the oil on my 2016 Mazda CX-5! It has a skid plate to mess with. We have a 2022 Lexus RX350 V6 and in Canada, they want you to change the oil every 16,000kms. I don’t go longer than 8,000kms between oil changes. Our dealership has included free oil changes for life but based on 16,000km intervals….. so I’ll just do one myself between intervals.
Our LX 570 had a big steel plate to remove so that was fun
Great, want to do it right. Where did you get your sandals?
thanks for watching. those are Adidas sandals. super comfy
Rob, I think you forgot to remove the crusher washer when you removed the drain plug. The washer gets stuck on the drain opening. This typically happens when I do an oil change on my wife’s RX350. A light tap with a flat tip screwdriver will remove it. However having doubles washers will not cause a leak. Just remember next time.
Yes I was testing if you guys were paying attention 😉
that drain tool is rad! way better than using the plastic one that comes with the filter element! buying one asap!
Also, I think I might've seen two crush washers on the drain bolt? One is stuck on the pan still when you put on the new one!
@@alex1pham I had thought it was a washer too but I went at it with my pick and even a screwdriver and it wasn't budging. Also the edges weren't silver. I didn't want to mar it up as if that was a lip to the pan it could leak.
That plastic one is crap. I had one get locked in. Took some effort to get it out and when I finally did a piece broke off and got stuck in the housing. Had to disassemble the housing to get it out. Really does look like he double washered the drain plug. I would just torque the crap out of it. Would suck to waste all that brand new oil just to change out the washer. Haha
If that was the washer it wasn't budging. I went at it with a pick and a flat head screwdriver. Dealer must have kung fu torqued it.lol
@@RobDaman My Tacoma I have to use a piece of wood and quick tap from a hammer. You pretty brave to take a screw driver to a sealing area. 😬 I think cuz it's fiber it kinda becomes fuzed to the pan over time.
Can you provide links to the filter hose setup then reply to this comment, please?

I would use the Mobil 1 oil filter especially if you’re going to do their 10,000 mile oil change intervals.
All you need is brand name filter with the proper specifications. They all do the same thing.
Is the oil filter remover the same as size as the 2018 Toyota Tacoma filter
Yes. Makes life so much easier
I thought the second oil change on the rx was free too but when I picked it up they said, "that will $118 please".
yikes
Are you from Vietnam
How many miles driven between oil changes on RX350
whats the ramp you used to get your car up? I need one of those
Very helpful! Thank you!!
Could you tell me the name and size of the square driver socket you used to take off the silver plate below oil filter?
3/8 inch socket set amzn.to/3zBnUZr
Well done.
What kind of ramp is it?
Very good job🌹👍🏻
what size of square socket? Thanks
Very good video
Great video - Where can I find those ramps/stands?
thanks i already subscribed
good job !
Nice how to video!

Rob thank you!My car is 2016 rx350. I need 6QT Mobil 1 oil right?
thanks for watching.. that is correct. here's the specs but use your dipstick to be sure...
5.8 quarts (5.5 liters) - with filter change, for vehicles with towing package
5.7 quarts (5.4 liters) - with filter change, for vehicles without towing package
5.6 quarts (5.3 liters) - without filter change
The oil filter no direction? facing up or down also no problem?
No problem either way.
Standard filters are much less pain. I hated these filter types. Toyota hello!!!
I have a question regarding oil, my vehicle is Lexus RX350 2018 I did oil change but I didn’t notice on the oil which was written suitable for hybrid vehicles is it ok or what please advise me
Oil was Mobil1 0W20 advanced full synthetic advanced fuel economy suitable for hybrid vehicles but my vehicle is not hybrid.
Thanks
Look at the oil cap on your Rx. It will have the recommended oil
Where did u get your funnel?
Nice video! Very clear and detailed. Wondering is that a 3/8 ratchet or 1/2? Thanks!
that was 3/8
Thanks
Hey man, is that a stuck crush washer on the pan? or it is part of the oil pan? My new Lexus oil pan looks like yours. but when I removed the drain plug, there is no crush washer from the factory. Now I am not sure if it is stuck on the pan or that's the mouth of the drain hole.
They stick to the oil pan most of the time for me. Check you didn’t double it
12:24 the "oops" is why you use cardboard. Where are your gloves?
great video. how high are the ramps you are using?
Bottom curve is about 6 inches
@@RobDaman Is that enough height to do the oil change? I have a CRV and I bought rhino ramps to do oil change but seemed kind of low. Are rhino ramps ok for the lexus? Also, any tips on how to break loose a really tight oil drain plug? mine is not as easy as in your vide unfortunately....
Great video Rob! I watched video on your Tacoma oil change to learn the proper way to service a Toyota oil filter element. One thing I noticed lots of Toyota owners are using Mobil 1 advanced fuel economy 0w-20. How does your Lexus and Tacoma run on/like this oil?? I know Exxon/Mobil makes Toyota 0w-20.
I have had great results using Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 5w-20 in my 08 Honda Fit. The little Fit engine really seems to like this oil, ran smooth and got an extra 1 mpg.
Thanks for the feedback regarding my vids. I truly appreciate it.Honestly I haven't noticed much of a mpg difference and most of my miles are my daily routes. The good thing is the oil doesn't 'burn off' so the oil levels are always good.We actually had a Fit back then too. I fixed it up like I do all my cars. 😀
What’s that black square attachment called? I have 1/2 inch ratchet but I’ll need that black piece to fit into the little square
Rachet extension
Thank you @robdaman
