I had no idea that 没 was used in these circumstances like "I didn't do something". The only rule I learned a long time ago is that 有 is *always* negated by 没, never by 不.
Is the "I didn't + verb" always used in the recent past? That's how it seems to be used in the examples. "I didn't lose weight" (recently), "I didn't smoke (recently), but I otherwise do smoke." I guess "I USED to smoke, but don't anymore" would probably be a different sentence from these examples.
Very helpful, new subscriber, long time learner (picked up bits and pieces over the years), but just never seemed to have the time to really dedicate to it. I really need the ear training, I have a fair bit of trouble always distinguishing the tones when said at more than a slow speed 😅

@@smartmandarinkatrinalee 😔😔我不明白。。in an interview w/famous Hong Kong Chef, he used Mandarin to say: 我在北京過了三年。 i lived in Beijing 3 yers. Time length after the verb. i used this structure here. HSK1 teaches time period before verb generally, as you corrected me. but in your past video you corrected me that time duration was after the verb in the sentence "i studied Chinese for .5 yrs". so i used the pattern where duration was after the verb here.
