      If not in the country of the language it is a majority in, such as, if one is not in China nor the Greater China Region, go to areas where you live, work, and/or travel that have those languages spoken: ie ChinaTown. The same is true for Thai, one can go to Little Thailand; If say, for Arabic, there is Dearborn, Michigan. Those are examples. It's true also for expats to pick up languages when overseas, as she described: immersion.
      If "overseas"/outside of one's homeland, land of immigration/workplace, etc... when encountering and interacting with fellow expats, the native speakers at times integrate in "expat communities", just as do "Western" expats do.

    I'm Moroccan and I speak Arabic(native), french, English, Korean, and Spanish
    Basically I learned french and English in school at a very young age, Korean bcus of drama and mainly k-pop which through I got to know the culture then I had the opportunity to learn it formally at university due to a cooperation of a Korean university with the university I studied at and after I learned Spanish this year in a Spanish institution to go study in Spain.
    I think the keys to improve language fluency are reading a lot and speaking like actually using the language in the daily life because otherwise you will forget it, as well as watching/hearing from natives(like watching drama or real life documentaries).
    I really like learning languages it's so fun and helps to understand different people and different cultures. And I really want to learn more languages in the future like Chinese and Japanese and Russian.

    When I first approached Thai language (coming from Italian as my mother tongue language) I was pretty confused by the ‘context’ thing, I thought to myself ‘how do I know if the person is talking about themselves or about someone else when they omit the subject and don’t conjugate verbs?’ but now, after a few months of consuming Thai contents and learning this language, I got so used to it to the point where I’m like ‘why do we need to conjugate every single verb in Italian when we can just get it by the context like in Thai?’ 😂😂

      Your comment really struck a chord with me. It brought back memories of when I was forced to learn English. Back then, I was so frustrated with all the grammar rules. I started learning other European languages and realized that English actually has the fewest grammar rules of them all. I couldn't understand why languages needed to conjugate verbs and have so many complicated rules. My teachers would always say it was to ensure accurate and clear communication, but I never understood how a mistake could be made when the context makes the meaning clear.
      Being so used to Thai (my native language), I forgot about the perspective of non-native speakers. When I started teaching Thai to my foreign friends in university, I realized how much Thai relied on emotions and feelings. I couldn't explain to them why we use certain sentence structures or word endings. All I could say was, 'Just go with your feelings.' 🤣😂 That's when I realized how difficult it was to teach a language without relying on explicit rules. It was harder than learning grammar.
      My friends always asked for rules, but Thai is so flexible and doesn't always follow strict patterns. In the end, I could only tell them to follow their intuition. It took them months to accept this, but once they understood that Thai is like the Thai people-easygoing and casual-they started to enjoy learning it. Eventually, they were able to speak Thai like a native.

      @@MeowMeow-go3tz That’s so interesting, thanks for sharing it ☺️
      Now that I know how Thai language works I can only imagine how hard learning a language that conjugates verbs must be!
      I’ve studied Russian and Spanish for a couple of years in high school but ended up quitting them because of all those grammar rules, so difficult and pretty boring to me.
      As soon as I started learning Thai, my perspective on how languages work completely changed: everything about Thai is so much different from Italian and I personally find it much more interesting than any other language I’ve come across in my life!
      I feel like Thai people really talk by feeling, they ‘go with the flow’ and.. wow that’s so fascinating!
      Another thing that blew my mind about this language were tones: coming from a non-tonal language I was not used to hearing them at all, I remember watching videos (explaining Thai tones) and thinking ‘there’s no way someone can hear any difference, that person is literally repeating the same sound 5 times’ 😂😂
      Now, after 6/7 months of learning Thai, I have to admit I still struggle with it, most times I have to focus a lot to hear and understand the right tone.. but at least now I can tell that there are, in fact, differences between one tone and the other 😂
      Studying Thai on my own without a teacher surely slows down my progress (especially my speaking skills) but I’m not giving up, I’m willing to learn this beautiful language!
      You said you learned some European languages, now I’m curious! May I ask which languages do you speak? ☺️

      @@Megh2001 If you don't mind, I'd be happy to help you. I think learning to pronounce tones in a language requires the help of a native speaker to listen and correct you. I remember when I first started learning Vietnamese and Chinese, I needed a native-speaking friend to listen to me and tell me if I was saying it correctly. Even though my native language, Thai, also has tones, it only helped me to a certain extent. I still had a lot more to learn.
      Besides English, I've studied French and Spanish, but I could only manage basic greetings and introductions haha. It was a very beginner level, nothing more. At that time, I found it quite difficult to find learning materials and felt that these languages were too far removed from my daily life. So, I decided to learn languages that were closer to home, such as Vietnamese, Khmer, and Chinese.
      As for Indo-European languages, I've given up on learning them for conversational purposes. However, I'm fascinated by their grammar, vocabulary, and etymology. I find them to be incredibly strange and fascinating, and I'm already very happy to have learned about them.

    You can omit the subject in a lot of languages but Germanic languages (or at least English and German and I assume the others) not so much. I hear a lot of foreigners complain about this part of English. As a native speaker of course I feel like something is missing when the subject is omitted. But I remember a Japanese friend of mine talking to another Japanese speaker and complaining how English speakers always correct them if they drop the subject but then go on to say that we drop the subject too when we speak English. Obviously they felt like there was a double standard going on. And it's true we do drop the subject sometimes but it's either very sloppy casual speech or it's for a sort of literary effect. I'd have to pay attention to my speech to really notice when I do it to figure out the context of why and the pattern. There may not really be a pattern except when I'm lazy though.
    :edit: I was thinking about French because I couldn't think of a single sentence in French where they drop the subject (but my French is not very good so I had doubts) and I checked with Chat GPT. French is the only Romance language that does require a subject grammatically. It evolved over time so that by around the 17th century when "modern" French was in place, when you spoke French you used a subject in every sentence. Chat GPT has more information if you're curious but the theory on why is that due to sound changes in French pronunciation, the language had become less clear and you couldn't figure out the subject as easily as before. Per Chat GPT anyway. That makes sense but at the same time Korean and Japanese have zero verb conjugations when it comes to the subject only for politeness and yet they don't use a subject so I don't know if I fully buy into that.

However, I've noticed that I either fall asleep or my brain becomes saturated from listening. In other words, I can't memorize enough to explain, declare, or recite to other people. So I'm basically beating my head against a wall, because I study by writing by hand on paper, accumulating lots of paper, can't keep reviewing, can't memorize with Anki, and nothing seems to have any effect on my memory. I don't know if it's common or more recommended to take notes on paper. I still don't trust note-taking apps like OneNote or GoodNotes, or I don't have a compatible stylus pen for that purpose.

    @Alexander-m3o1u Месяц назад +1

    That's the point with those "polyglots" - it's not a problem at all to speak even 15 languages. The only question is how you define "to speak a language". Because most so-called polyglots can barely string a few words together in foreign languages. It is much harder and much more respectable to learn one language to a good level than to learn five languages at a superficial level.

    • @evolve_hq
      @evolve_hq  Месяц назад

      Interesting perspective!

    • @Alexander-m3o1u
      @Alexander-m3o1u Месяц назад +1

      @evolve_hq The vast majority of people speak even their native language rather poorly. That's why it's a common thing when you hear some interesting idea and then try to retell it to your friends, but all that comes out of your mouth is some kind of nonsense. That's what rhetoric is for.
      And when you learn a language, the higher your level, the more time and effort it takes to improve the quality of the language. As a rule, it takes the same amount of time to improve your language proficiency from C1 to C2 as it does to learn a language from scratch to this very C1. Meanwhile, even C2 is not even close to an eloquent native speaker level. So, of course, learning a new language to level A2 is much easier than polishing the language you are already learning to a good level. And, of course, you can always brag on the Internet that you are a POLYGLOT.
