All these years I read "rules" that 了 "puts a sentence into past tense". Wow, this made the usage MUCH clearer :) Here's another question though - I've seen the same character (了) pronounced as "liao". Is that just a dialect (a lot of my friends also speak Hokkien), or is that valid in Mandarin too?
