"apparently it's not gay which makes me less interested to be honest" is me @ every piece of media since maybe like 2014, so we agree
OMG I was about to comment something similar ! This is also me every time I read or want to read a story with romance and nothing is queer in it.
something that i am learning through this video is that European/U.K editions of books are often so much more beautiful than the U.S covers ❤ You've inspired me to go through my own tbr! cheers!
It would be really fun to see a reading vlog of you reading books you usually wouldn’t pick up and aren’t excited about from your TBR! You might be pleasantly surprised 😏❤️
Passing by Nella Larsen is actually the book that inspired the vanishing half! A really short, really good classic. Recitatif is still so good tho
I absolutely loved Bunny by Mona Awad! (It actually follows university students) Definitely recommend reading it around spooky season! The whole thing feels like a fever dream
A man called Ove is amazing! Though I identified more with Anxious People by the same author bc I have anxiety lol
But it’s still one of the best books I’ve read!
100% agree. Anxious people was really really good.
@@hannaholliges2636 amazing! glad your experience was great too
I read “Before the coffee gets cold” not long after my grandad passed away and it’s one of my favourite books of all time, always hits me in the feels and a true tear jerker.
I can’t wait to read the 3rd one it’s all ready on pre order.
I’d really recommend “The southern book clubs guide to slaying vampires” the imagery is fantastic and great for the spooky season coming.
In regards to a long series I have enjoyed… “Rockton” by Kelley Armstrong, they’re a thriller/detective series, easy to read/no pressure read.
I can't wait for the "unhinged woman" vlog and maybe another translated fiction vlog. No Such Thing as an Easy Job was the book that made translated fiction click with me.
I love acotar in like a trashy reality TV kind of way. It's also what got me back into reading as an adult so it has kind of a cozy spot in my heart. I'm looking forward to hearing you talk about it but if you're not feeling it, don't force it.
Start with Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow- it’s so good! It has such rich character description-you feel like you’re one of their gang. Then you must read Joan Didion, Crawdads and Ove. You have SO MANY great books on your TBR!!! Joan Didion - get the tissues out. It makes you think…and write. It’s getting cooler-time to sit on your patio and enjoy those books! I hope your fur babies are doing well.
Amazing books, I know the feeling of looking at your tbr, thinking every book needs to be my next read. I am an autistic person who never plans to have kids and "Regretting Motherhood" was one of the most important reads of my life. The representation of women who are not at home in motherhood was what I very much needed.
Please read “Our Wives Under the Sea” soon! My favorite book of the year so far. I got it from the library and plan to buy it and read it again. I was taking pictures of pages to remember some of the quotes. Such a odd book but so weirdly profound!
Gone Girl is my favorite book. It's what really broke me out of my manic pixie dream girl phase and made me start questioning my attraction to men as just seeking male validation. I think it also really speaks to why we can become addicted to toxic relationships--how they can bring out things in us that we find more interesting than who we are when we're truly safe and content.
I hear your little theme tune at the beginning of the video and I am immediately in a better mood!
Song of Achilles is one of my favorite books of this year. It was fantastic! Don't be intimidated by not knowing the story of the Iliad. Miller does a great job of telling you everything you need to know. And it's gay!! From there I jumped to Heartstopper, then Red White & Royal Blue. They are all wonderful.
Passing by Nella Larson I think is what inspired the vanishing half. It was originally published in the 1920s. Also a very good book and short read!
Hearing you sing Bo Burnham songs just made me love you even more ✨🧡🐌
My number is 103. Unless you count classics, then it’s 138. Unless you count Ebooks, then it’s 149.
look i'm not gonna lie, i was feeling some type of way about my tbr of 80 books and this has just made me feel more justified to add to that pile
also in my early youtube days i tried to make a challenge video (cringe) that was titled "is your tbr taller than you challenge?" i think you would win
your videos give me sm serotonin :’) luv you very muchhh and u rock!
My brother constantly comes at me for never watching Narnia and i am ashamed
I'm rereading Bunny right now and it's just as good this go round. I also really loved The Memory Police. Once There Were Wolves isn't spooky, per se, but it was really intense and impactful.
i have yet to read the starless sea by erin morgenstern however i am currently OBSESSED with the night circus!! i keep putting it down because i don’t want it to end. it’s the only book i’ve ever read where i feel like i am living and breathing with the characters. it’s so immersive and i know you’d love it! it’s also very character heavy with a subplot of enemies to lovers :))
The Night Circus is probably my #1 favorite book! I've been planning out a red scarf to knit this cozy season ❤
i’m going to the library today and have been looking for new books to add to my tbr all morning so this is perfect timing!!
I love how much you know about all the books on your TBR. Fascinating to watch, the books you have always look so interesting to me so thank you!!!
I was so excited seeing Dune on your first TBR shelf for you to talk about it because I’m currently half way through reading it for the first time, honestly the non-verbal reaction said enough 😂❤
I LOVE THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING!!!!! It was such a cool character study with lots of philosophical musings and rabbit holes. It was very accessible and beautifully done and made me reflect a lot!!
I am sooooo intrigued in your opinion in A Tale for the Time Being! It's one of my favourite books ever! I haven't read any other books by Ozeki yet, but all of them are on my tbr
red white and royal blue is SO GOOD. my fav romance of all time - i first read it in january of this year and then reread it again in the spring. hope you love it!!
this came at the perfect time. so happy to have something fun and cozy to watch while i lay in bed with covid!!!
I hope you get better soon!
A Tale For The Time Being is dual perspective. One is a teenage girl writing in her journal in Japan about her and her family's mental health issues, bullying she's experiencing, etc.
The other perspective is following a woman who is slowly translating the girls journal - it washed ashore, she thinks because of a tsunami in Japan brought it all the way to BC and she's trying to figure out if the girl is still alive.
A+. Highly recommend.
The Narnia books are soooo good for wintery vibes 💜 cozy and magical
Please don’t come back from the moon!!! Read it over two years ago and I literally still think about it all the time
You said you're not that big on sci-fi but I would recommend The Ones Were Meant To Find. It became one of my favourite books last year ^^
Bunny by Mona Awad is my absolute favorite book. Much vibes
i appreciate how you're able to articulate that sometimes a book just feels intimidating. nothing wrong with it, doesn't mean we'll never read it, just takes some time to build up the momentum to jump in!
I've watched 2 of the Narnia movies and I really love them, can't wait to read the book!
I've read 4 books from your 128 (damn!) books on your tbr. Gave all of them 4 stars. But almost every book I've read from your favorite shelf has been a 4 stars for me. So, if my math is correct, you have 4 potential new favorites waiting for you in that humongous pile.
literature compatibility!
never in my LIFE had a seen OCD representation that i felt actually captured what it’s like to live with everyday until i read turtles all the way down. i haven’t been able to reread it since because that shit HURTS. and i am SO GRATEFUL it exists
Before the coffee gets cold is absolutely fantastic!
THE YELLOW WALLPAPER IS SO GOOD
I'm currently reading Conquest of Bread!! So so good. I'll read lines and they just make me want to get up and do a little dance because of how well-written and critical they are. You'll love it!
I read Gone Girl after watching the moving and I still enjoyed it! The audio book is great.
i very much relate to thinking chuck palahniuk was super cool in hs but not so much now… let’s just say my local used bookstore was very happy to take them off my hands 🤣
from now on, I'm all about tomatoes and bread! gimme the serotonin 🍅🍞
omg you have to read beloved asap!! took me a lil to get into it and learn the AAVE but after around page 50/60 you get the hang of it and it’s amazing❤️
I think you should read Before the Coffee Gets Cold or Breast and Eggs first! ☺️
LOVE "A Man Called Ove", and also Backman's "My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry" is an all-time favorite. Sobs + belly laughs
So many good reads in your future. I hope you will enjoy Ove! Notes was very good!
I just have to recommend Red, White, and Royal Blue and All the Light We Cannot See. I've read all three of Casey McQuiston's books and Red, White, and Royal Blue was my favorite by far. It was the only one I gave five stars and I rarely give out five stars. All the Light We Cannot See is a book I read in high school and I still think about it all these years later. I can never pick a favorite book of all time but All the Light We Cannot See is always in the conversation.
i loved ‘once there were wolves’! i read it cause leena norms discussed it and it was really fun to watch her video about it after finishing the book
I read all the light we cannot see during the in-class portion of my driving school about five years ago, gifted to me by a friend! The last few chapters got really rough to read, but I really enjoyed it
One of my all time favorite books is All The Light We Cannot See! I highly recommend!
Love you, Alli’! ❤️
Okay me again. As a chronic fellow spoonie who absolutely LOVED Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn, it’s a resounding YES for the Yellow Wallpaper - you can whizz through it but it’s such an important landmark in the treatment and understanding of hysteria. Plus there’s an Audible free-add-to-library version read by Cynthia Erivo which I can heartily recommend.
The Body In Pain is another absolute corker and well worth a read - just be forewarned that it’s very interesting but very dense. For me it was one I had to ‘snack’ on while reading other things. But again, a hugely important work and it gives you lots to think about in terms of how we articulate, understand and respond to pain in ourselves and others.
Xxx
Borders, wow! That is a throwback. I remember it, but my dad usually brought us to B&N or the library. I hope you get your house with “Belle’s library” very soon! That would definitely be a dream come true.
Oh and I love all Dr. Greger’s books! So many practical tips for improving our health.
Everything is Illuminated is one of my favorite books. It is not at all PC, and has been questioned for historical inaccuracies. But every time I read it, it just hits for me.
from what ive seen most people prefer either circe or song of achilles over the other, i didnt personally enjoy circe much but loved song of achilles so i definitely recommend trying achilles out and not let your feelings toward circe affect that
The Starless Sea was absolutely phenomenal and is easily one of my favorite books. I wish it had come out when I was a child because I know that young me would have lost their shit over it
At my last count, I had 153 physical books on my TBR shelves/piled in my room. I know I have a few more now, but that's not counting ebooks that I also own.
Also, I definitely think Chronicles of Narnia is worth it. I was allowed to read it as a kid because of the god stuff (and it felt like penance to me since I was hiding HP from my churchy parents), but I still loved the series. I've reread some of it as an adult and obviously there are some things to be critical about, but there's still a lot of adventure and they're short books.
i just picked up the pisces! i want to read it soon even tho it is giving warmer month vibes tbh
I have 102 books on my physical tbr :(( I’m obsessed with legends & lattes,, so I really hope you enjoy it
I have that copy of the chronicles of narnia!! One of my favorite book series. It is a very obvious allegory for biblical events, but even still it is one of my favorites.
Honestly, I intentionally keep my TBR list pretty short (maybe like 10-15) because I get decision paralysis if it gets too long! But you do you! :)
Watching this after work and I really needed to take that deep breath. Thank you.
I loved a Man Called Ove, there was also a film (haven't seen) that was nominated for an Oscar based on the book. Its so sweet and just reminds that its the small things in a life that matter most.
Blink is not actually a self-help book! It's non-fiction psychology and was maybe my first non-fiction favorite ever, I recommended it to everyone in high school. I haven't re-read it in a hot minute but I still think about it a bunch
omg! so good to know thank you for the encouragement!
Hey Ally! I read the whole Chronicles of Narnia when I was younger and definitely loved it and recommend it. It’s with lots of children characters and magical realism/just cute magic so seems something you would like. I remember the movies weren’t up to the level of the books and was sad they stopped at some point. Cheers, thank you again for a nice sweet video 😘
i got my hard copy tbr down to 6 but when those are read i'm going back through my library to see if i've missed any. that was my goal for the year 😁
u don’t have much manga in yr tbr so idk if u really like it or not but i HIGHLY recommend witch hat atelier! it’s one of my special interests and i wish more people would read it!!
i want to dive into the rabbit hole that is manga but haven’t known where to start - thank you for the rec!
yay for The Answers being on your tbr! Lacey is my favorite.
i keep my tbr stack under 100 to help me feel less overwhelmed ha.
I really enjoyed reading Such A Fun Age and it was the very first book I gave 5 stars throughout my whole reading journey!
Once There Were Wolves is one of my favs!!!
Once There Were Wolves is so good and would be a perfect fall read!
Oh my god I read Breasts and Eggs recently and loved it! Also I listened to the audio book for Open Water narrated by the author and I HIGHLY recommend it. I'm planning on eventually reading it from the book at some point just so I can experience it all again it's so good ❤️
Love the video and the tattoos!
the books that touch on psychology and philosophy sounds so intresting it would be so amazing if you brought them more in your channel. also this video was so fun to watch!
The Starless Sea is also my favorite book of all time so I definitely recommend it and am extra curious and excited to see which booktuber shares that with me. I probably knew at one time and forgot tbh. 😄 Oh, and Red, White, and Royal Blue is my favorite romance I've ever read so I super recommend it! I've heard mostly negative things about Shara Wheeler, so you're in good company and I probably won't read that one.
I read the entire Narnia series a few times as a kid. When I re-read them as an adult the religious metaphors I missed as a kid hit me in the face. Especially in the lion the witch and the wardrobe. I would say that's the most overt one. The others aren't as bad. The stories are still fun. The Dawn Treader and the Silver Chair were my favourite. They're more adventure stories.
Maybe this helps you want to read Song of Achilles. I absolutely hated Circe, but loved SoA so I hope you feel the same way☺️
I loved both Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukagawa! I mostly get books from my library so I have an itty bitty physical tbr.
Open Water is the best book I read this year. It's gentle and it's brutal and it's wonderful.
Said the room was getting dark, moved the books, then said “everything is illuminated” 😂
Love this!
You and your videos always make my week! love u, you're the best
Our wives under the sea is not available yet in my country, So I took it right away after your video the audio book. I'm so thrilled ! Thanks for remind me to read it ! (so many books, so little memory ^^)
Pan’s Labyrinth has wonderful, atmospheric prose 🙂 it’s one of those books I read to my kid and “edit” out the stuff that is too awful/graphic etc.
I finished A Tale for The Time Being yesterday and it was so good. I think you'll get a lot out of it.
my heart grows bigger every-time ally uploads a new video
I think you’ll really like Ruth Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being - it’s an incredibly heartwarming story as well as a very accessible philosophically driven story!! One of my favourite books I’ve read this year
haha i know exactly whose favorite books you're reading as soon as i saw summer sons and then you said starless sea. im excited for that video! i hope you enjoy the books :))
also knowing the ending to the song of achilles could actually add a different reading experience because u'll see all of the foreshadowing and that's one of my fav parts about the book.
Red White and Royal Blue was my first adult romance novel (I'm queer and so had generally avoided them) and it is great, it gave me fanfic vibes but in the best way - meaning the characters feel lived-in and fleshed out AND the plot and interactions are so fun to follow. The friends/siblings/parents are all interesting people too. There's about to be a movie (which to be fair, we're a little unsure about for many reasons), but I've been rereading ahead of that, and it's still great.
Pleeaassee read Sweet Bean Paste! I loved it so much and I so badly wanna know what you think of it!
I love you so much 🤣 And I agree with you so much about Book Lovers
I'd love to hear your thoughts on swimmers
Ooh! Go with your gut on your first Ruth Ozeki! I read The Book of Form and Emptiness first, since it was on the short list for the Womens Prize for fiction (and won!). Tabbed it like cahrazy. The different descriptions of the love of reading throughout the story are 👨🏻🍳👌🏼
can’t wait to see what your thoughts on all of those books are (especially narnia, aka the first series i dnf’ed before i knew what the concept of dnf’ing was at the tender age of 8 - it had the format of a book within a book in the 4th(?) one and held it for about 200 pages and i couldn’t get through it)
I loved the Narnia books, though I did read them when I was young so...But I think I would still enjoy them. I don't think it is preachy, the first book is hugely Jesus themed but past that I don't recall it being too obnoxious. Voyage of the Dawn Treader is like the Odyssey, pretty fun. I do want to reread them, I wish I could give you a more recent opinion now though!
@@sonyamarx4364 That sounds fair, I'm sure I would have more criticisms now than I did then. I'm not religious now, but I was familiar with bible stories when I was younger. I may really try and give them a reread soon bc now I'm curious about how I'll feel about them.
I loved Voyage of The Dawn Treader. Reepicheep the mouse is a mighty heart that admits no obstacles and metes out even handed justice.
@@nanimaonovi2528 Oh, this is the book I meant to say was like the Odyssey! Yeah, that's probably my favorite book too that I remember
A man called Ove, sooo good! 💕
The Vanishing Half was inspired by Passing (Nella Larsen) I’ve actually just started reading it and will read The Vanishing Half right after 😊 Love your videos and love you 🥰💛
