    I'm 83, and have been on this path for about 40 years. No one is perfect, so I've been through that time when I took back dairy, got sick, and fat, and had to make the decision to go back to 100% plant based. I lost my mom to colon cancer and decided that I'd never eat anything that didn't grow from the ground. Thank you, Dr. Barnard for all this information, and to you, Chuck, for hosting the interviews.

Next year newcomers will have these questions. I think it is even good to hear this repeated no matter how long you are plant based. Spaced repetition, best way to memorise and learn.

When coconut oil first become a big craze, it makes most of us here in coconut land of Indonesia’s jaws drop all the way to the floor. We’ve known for years it’s great in hair & on skin but terrible for cholesterol & arteries. But then again we’re a nation of oil eater aka deep fried food eaters despite the fact it would one day kill us😂😂😂

    For arthritis he should try never to have more that one nightshade at a time. Nightshades are plants that include tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines, capsicums and chilli peppers (tobacco is also a nightshade). I have found that having a meal which includes two or more of these can cause arthritis to flare - although I can have just a baked potato with beans and be fine or just a little canned tomato incorporated into a pasta sauce ; however that is just me - maybe try eliminating them altogether and then reintroducing slowly, one at a time to see what happens.

    Thanks for this service. Dr Barnard is a gem.
    We appreciate Dean Ornish’s contribution to our understanding about CVD issues, but why is Nathan Pritikin never mentioned? He was possibly the first to reverse heart disease when he was told repeatedly that reversal was impossible, and included exercise when advised not to because it would probably kill him. We also owe a lot of our knowledge to him and many owe increased life in years and health to him. He also funded his study himself because no one else would fund such “impossible” ideas. I find it sad that he is given little/no credit these days.

    • @gardenofeels6872
      @gardenofeels6872 2 года назад +1

      The reason Pritikin is rarely mentioned by vegans is because he developed two different types of cancer at a relatively young age on a low -fat vegan diet. He ended up killing himself because of the pain of the cancers. I would hardly call that a good example of great health on a vegan diet. He is the last person advocates of a low-fat vegan diet want to talk about.

    • @vc6601
      @vc6601 2 года назад +1

      @@gardenofeels6872 Yes, he did develop cancer, but as I understand it the cancer was due to exposure to certain chemicals during the war. None of the vegan doctors ever say that a healthy vegan diet will protect from all ills, just reduce the risk.

    • @citadelofwinds1564
      @citadelofwinds1564 2 года назад +1

      @@gardenofeels6872 , Pritikin did not develop the cancers because of a vegan diet, but despite it. I suspect the problem was that it wasn't a whole foods diet but relied heavily on processed foods. I tried the diet years ago and so many recipes contained canned this and canned that, so the diet was frankly nutritionally deficient - especially their extreme, ultra low calories version.
      Since then, it's been recognised that refined and processed foods are a problem whether people are omnivores, keto or vegan followers. So the key is to eat the majority of foods whole or minimally processed, and include enough fresh produce. If Pritikin was relying on too much processed foods, he wasn't getting enough of the protective factors from fruit and vegs. He was a pioneer, finding his way, and that means making mistakes. Later researchers and vegan proponents have learned from these mistakes, and these days the best sources urge people to minimise processed foods.

    • @gardenofeels6872
      @gardenofeels6872 2 года назад +1

      @@citadelofwinds1564 I never said Pritikin got cancer because of the vegan diet, but it surely did not protect him from cancer either. I remember seeing interviews he did and he claimed to eat a pretty much whole foods plant diet. He was especially fond of whole grains. But his main claim to fame was the miniscule amount of fat in the diet he recommended. Neither you nor I really know how much processed foods he ate as opposed to whole foods. We only have his words and his books. His recipes weren't necessarily what he was eating himself, but rather an attempt to make his diet easier to follow. All we can do is speculate.
      One thing I do know. Fat is a very important macro nutrient, and your immune system will ultimately fail with too little of it. That is one of the reasons for the high vegan failure rate.

    • @panes840
      @panes840 2 года назад

      @@gardenofeels6872 cancer is caused by multi environmental variables that can switch on or off a gene. Fat is important but it's not that important. An apple contains saturated fat so does a lettuce but the amounts are miniscule. You don't actually need very much even when keeping calorie density low. So by avoiding high calorie density foods you can get enough to ensure hormones function properly.

    I try to cook without oil for the most part , the only thing I put a little oil is when I cook rice, let’s say maybe half Tbsp for 2 cups and a half of rice. Would that be considered minimum use of oil?

      Eat some nuts but eat then raw since roasting changes the fats and use the olive while skipping the oil as it is concentrated from more olives than you would eat normally. This is the healthier option and still gives you a moderate amount of fat.

      Fry everything in water. Works the same. Or I would say steam or sauté in water. No oils. For salads put unsweetened apple sauce instead of oils. Add seasonings like garlic powder and pepper and vinegars. Tastes great. Sometimes I use defrosted organic blueberries in my salad for the dressing I get them from Costco in frozen section. Great for you and not expensive.

      Why a European doctor would never advise you not to to eat without olive oil, avocado or nuts unless you're allergic to these things. This non fat advice is very extreme, if a person wants to eat a healthy diet. I can understand when doctors advice that you should avoid animal fats, but to much abstain in the long run won't pay off. We are all different in every way. Non fats might work for some people, but if everyone should start eating without fats what would be the consequences for some of us. Can everyone live on low fat?

    • @CastledarkDweller27
      @CastledarkDweller27 2 года назад

      @@m.k.2306 OIL messes with your blood & blocks your arteries. It is THE MOST calorie dense "food" in the world. It's kind of evil and WE DONT NEED IT!
      These doctors are mostly dealing with fatties (like me) who need to lose weight, or folks with heart conditions & the like.
      So thats why they push the NON-FAT vegan whole food diet most of all. Because its THE most effective way to lose weight and clean out arteries.
      But once we get our excess weight off we can include some plant fats again.
      (And just between you & I .......I'm ok with a slower weight-loss rate ~about 25 kilos per year~ so i allow myself a tbsp of ground flaxseeds OR chia seeds OR quarter of an avocado...some days) (Well... most days) (Okayyyy... it's EVERY day!) lol
      But if you're at a suitable weight u are happy with.....then HAVE AT IT : ) You can routinely include plant fats in your whole food vegan diet & still be at your healthiest. The main point i think these doctors are trying to make with their somewhat anti-fat message is EAT THE OLIVE with all the fibre, NOT the olive OIL.

      Probably won’t hurt you occasionally but you get the most nutrients from foods if they are raw. Cooking also destroys the foods enzymes. Leafy greens like spinach and kale and arugula and cruciferous veggies have the highest nutrients. Fruits have some but not near as much as veggies. And raw has the most. I follow Dr Broooke Goldner for the most healing diet in the world. She also recommends lots of water and Omega 3s in flax or chia seeds to help get the nutrients into the cell walls for healing.
