This is exactly how I use my MXR, in the front. Honestly I sold all my overdrive pedals because I find the EQ in front works a lot better for my taste. Doesn’t color your sound like ODs!
Got one of these coming in the mail now. Can’t wait to try it out. I want it for its EQ purposes, but I’m hoping it can pull double duty and replace my Spark Mini Boost as well. It sounds absolutely killer in your vid, so I’ve got high hopes! Just like every other piece of gear I order, in the back of my mind I’m secretly hoping that it will also magically make me better at guitar. It hasn’t happened…….yet 🤣😂🤣. I still hold out hope, and continue to spend WAYYYY too much money on gear hoping to find the piece of gear that will enhance my abilities lmaoo.
Works as a boost/OD and also works as a cab sim also. EQ pedals are valuable tools. Cool video demo. Also most guitar tone resides between 70-5.5k. That’s where the magic happens.
I use mine after the overdrive pedal just for a little extra boost for certain frequencies. Works great. Nice to know that it could also be used by itself. Thanks!
I have this awesome MXR pedal, and the coolest thing about it is that you can literally place it anywhere in your signal chain, including the loop, and fine tune the tone at that point. It plays well with your rig regardless of what you think it's limitations are...so to say that there really are no limitations, just what you can imagine!
Back in the days where I didn't have an overdrive I just dime my eq and I had a boost. I could've done it smarter but it worked for the time. Now I'm looking for a good eq pedal so I could use it instead of od.
You can use any eq as a boost especially if it had a volume slider built in. EVH did this with the original boss 7 band and would boost the mids primarily. 25 years ago I had an old DOD eq pedal that I would do the same thing with on my 5150. I think it gives a slightly but different feel than an actual tube screamer or the like, but who cares. If it accomplishes what you want have fun.
I usually run my 10 band eq through the fx loop on my amp. That way I'm not changing the tone of the guitar going into the amp, I'm changing the tone of the guitar and the amp going into the speaker. Gives a greater control on the overall tone coming out of the speaker.
Before I even watched this cool video, I knew the answer. Absofreakinlutely! I did this with a Boss GE-7 EQ pedal back in the late 80’s with the new Mesa Boogie .50 Caliber+ amp I had just bought. With awesome results! Cool video!
I've had this pedal for about a year. Been using it in the fx loop on my dsl20 head. Also have a series 2 single rectifier head and have never used it cause it has a parallel loop and also heard that it doesn't work well with pedals. Ive never thought to use it in front of the amp. Gonna have to try it next time i fire it up. Have tried a boss ds1 to boost it but didn't like the tone.
Awesome job on the MXR 10 band EQ video. Funny thing...I bought one 2 weeks ago to help sculpt better my non-factory EQ'd amps. I'm preferring it in the end of the effects loop...and run the Mud Killer or other preferred boost in front. 80's Mesa amps not internally equipped with EQ really take benefit of the MXR 10 band EQ. Just need one for each specific amp now...lol
Thank you very much. Glad you liked the video. I'm gonna do some more videos with it in the effects loop as well. I just wanted to kick it off with it in front of the app because I thought that would be interesting for everyone. I think you would have fun trying it out that way. Let me know if you do.
Graphic EQs works wonders for sure. I have not tried the mxr, I use the boss 7 band, and the JHS colour box v2, which is probably my favorite EQ. Great demo, and watching you discover something live for the first time is fun to watch. just like the dirty tree. Your reaction is entertaining.
I will be doing more videos about that as well. I just thought I would kick it off with this video because it's a very unique way of using the pedal. It's also a very useful way of using it
This was a great video man I have had this pedal about 4 years when I first got it people would say u have to put it in the loop I went to the front of the Amp anyway lol am stubborn 😃so it worked ok 4years back so I does work I will trying on the 5150 iconic oh by the way I used your settings on the Iconic video a few weeks back and that's where I left them 😉 😀 u agood guy man.☄️💥🤘😈
Nice experiment, these Eq pedals are really underestimated. Although I think they shine in the Fx Loop, man it was really close to the mud killer!!!! What cab and mic did you use?
Just brought a jvm410h and hate the extra noise a tube acreamer makes when in the loop thinking of trying one of these and taking the tubescreamer out is this a better idea ? Im still learning so any advice would be massively appreciated aounds epic
Don't think putting a drive pedal in the loop is normally what's done, especially with something like a tube screamer that's designed to boost the front of the amp
Very cool and great timing! Dude I work with is building me a pedalboard and the mxr is in the chain. Another thing I learned from Phillip McKnight is if you run one in the loop it can work as an attenuator as well. As long as it has the level control.
Dude, thanks for this demo. I've been reconsidering putting my GE-7 EQ pedal back in my chain,..... but the noise it adds was always a deal breaker. (but found some mods to fix/reduce the hiss.) This this MXR is really surprising me! Is it really this quiet? I don't hear any added hiss in your demo?
Thanks for commenting. Yeah this one was pretty quiet. I guess the older ones were noisy. It looks like they fixed the issue. That said, I did have a noise gate involved in the chain as well. Those certainly help
@@TONEWARSgearshow Good info 👍......A noise gate is understandable when yer rolling that much gain. If the MXR doesn't add any more noise than a boost pedal does......then it seems like a great alternative. 👍
Yeah, with an EQ, you get two things....1. voicing and shaping of the tone, and 2. Yes, act as a boost! Randy Rhoads used an MXR EQ in the front end of his amp and it makes sense. I didn't like the tone of the Kraken. I hear this horrible static-type of sound, I think you identified in the video as "raspiness"! It's bad. the 16kHz didn't take it out. It's in the amp and if you found a frequency on an EQ, you may start taking out some of the tone! So, for me, I would take it out of the amp, possibly peaker caps on the plates adjusted to roll off that raspiness and harshness!
Kerry King from slayer used a 10 band eq as a boost into a JCM800 for decades.
This is one of the best eq pedals out there...separate volume and gain, lots of tone shaping, 2 outputs, and it runs quiet
This is exactly how I use my MXR, in the front. Honestly I sold all my overdrive pedals because I find the EQ in front works a lot better for my taste. Doesn’t color your sound like ODs!
The fact that it has a separate gain and volume slider makes it a perfect boost.

NICE! 🤘
Boost the front with the mudkiller or any boost and put the MXR in the loop. Boost the front and the back. With EQ tone control at the end
Works as a boost/OD and also works as a cab sim also. EQ pedals are valuable tools. Cool video demo. Also most guitar tone resides between 70-5.5k. That’s where the magic happens.
I've been using an MXR 10 band as a boost for a long time. Gives you a lot of shaping ability.

My pleasure.

This thing sounds awesome. 😎

Looking forward to this. I was considering doing exactly this because all I need in front of my amp is a little boost and some bass cut.

Havent sat through this yet but my favorite boost i have it an eq. It works great as a boost in the front but also as a volume cut in the loop

Thank you very much. I love sharing these moments with you guys.
sd1 mxr 6band in front and 10band in efx loop work super duper good. or just the 6band eq in front and 10 in the efx loop
How about in the fx loop is where I heard it sounds great also
I will be doing more videos about that as well. I just thought I would kick it off with this video because it's a very unique way of using the pedal. It's also a very useful way of using it
@@TONEWARSgearshow cool
I'm here you may begin Jarod lol
Just got one, should woulda coulda got one a long time ago!!!
Is it in front of the amp or in the effects loop

Thanks for commenting. I really appreciate what you said here. . I'm glad those settings worked out for you on your iconic. Cheers!!
Oh yes it can. The Boss 7 channel EQ pedal is famous for it. This will too
Hey, great hearing from you! Mate I'm really enjoying messing around with this pedal now
Nice experiment, these Eq pedals are really underestimated. Although I think they shine in the Fx Loop, man it was really close to the mud killer!!!!
What cab and mic did you use?
Yeah boost in front eq in the loop with a the eq volume a little higher than unity is how I do it.
Thank you very much. I used the Mesa 212 cab with a combination of a 121 and SM 57
Kraken sounds killer
I have one, I love it
I wanted this EQ pedal but didn't wanna spend the money lol. So I got a cheap 7 band eq and stripped paint and polished it up lol.
I heard those work very well also.

I keep mine in loop and use for an amp tonal change. Kinda like another amp channel.

Thank you very much. Also, thanks for the tip regarding the attenuator. I'm gonna give that a try as well.
Is this better than the Boss Ge-7 equalizer?
Good question, I haven't compared them but give it a try and let me know.

Surprised that you just found this out?
I heard about it a while back. I just never had a chance to test it out yet.
