  • @RX120D

    EQ in front is affecting your guitar's tone on the way in. What this means is that it allows you to specify exactly what frequency ranges you want to be distorted more or less than others. This is how you get a tight tone. Cutting lows reduces distortion on the low frequencies, giving you a punchy attack. Djent boys like to boost 1-1.5k aggressively to get saturation focused in the mids and cut lows to get that stringy, metallic sound.
    An EQ out front is exactly what the BMT knobs are on a Mesa Mark series amp. Shape the tonal character with the pre-EQ, shape the tonal balance with post-EQ (in the loop or DAW)

  • @ErikEarlJohnson
    @ErikEarlJohnson Год назад

    Excellent demonstration! I totally agree tailoring the frequency spectrum and level that hits the front end of the amp is a fantastic tool to get the tone you want, especially more unique tones you can't get any other way. I find it especially useful when I want one guitar/pickup combo to sound closer to another I use through the same rig (i.e. make my SG sound a lot closer to my Les Paul by boosting lows and low mids with an eq before the distortion stages of the rig). Slash, Dave Murray and of course Slayer all did the eq in front thing at some point.

    • @ErikEarlJohnson
      @ErikEarlJohnson Год назад

      Also, different EQ's will get different character and results, I've used the Boss GE-7, an old MXR 10-band with the plug, and a Mesa Five-band pedal. They all sound different even if you're trying to use the same frequencies, so it's valuable to get a collection of EQ pedals just as you would overdrives, because in front of the amp especially they can sound WAY different.

    While EQ's are fun for home use, they're great in a band situation. Use it to shape the guitar to fit in a sonic space that's available. If you're fighting to be heard above a bass with lots of top end or a drummer with a bright kit, use an EQ. Get a long cable and go stand infront of the band like you're watching the band and dial in a tone.
    Ironically, when you dial in a tone that fits the band like that, it nearly always sounds like ass when played on its own but when played with the band it'll sound like the best thing since sliced bread.

I found mine to be very versatile, subtle and transparent. It works for any kind of noise gate use case you need, from really choppy high gain stuff, to ultra clean playing where you would never know it was on until you turned it off.
      People got all snobby about Boss, but they don't make bad pedals. I'll never sell my NS2 that I picked up cheap because everyone thought it was no good at the time.

    Can I recommend an idea? Get a looper pedal so that you can record a riff, then while it's playing you have both hands free for tweaking the knobs. Also it's less annoying to the listeners rather than striking open chords. But more importantly, you'll be able to dial it in so much easier without having to hold your guitar and strike a string, then turn a knob. I do this when I dial in amp sims, I record a riff and loop it so I am more focused on the sound

    I'm just starting to really play with the fx loop. I used to play stereo amps and didn't really have the option even.. plus I was a kid with not a bunch of money for cables anyway. The eq is a delicate, misunderstood, almost limitless pedal. Through the loop it seems like the effect is more dramatic whether or not that suits you ..
    I prefer (if I have to choose one, instead of doing both) vol -eq-pitch and I love pre and post wah distortion and there's distortion in the loop too .. I keep a delay before and in the fx loop too. They have medication for this I think ..

We've all heard Maxon OD-808s, Ibanez TS-9s, Boss SD-1s, MXR ZW-44s, the newer ones like the KSR Eros, Fortin Grind, Airis Savage, etc. I want to hear like a Boss BD-1, Nobels OD-1 a Klon Centaur and what they do tighten up an amp (or not tighten it.). Chances are that I'll stick to tube screamers, SD-1s and/or parametric EQ pedals.because I know they work for the sounds I want, but I also just want to try stuff out-or let you do it.

    i have always run a boss eq 1st thing from my guitar rite into the front of the amp, it added distortion like a screamer, but lots more gain and i could shape my tone with it a whole lot better, if you boost 800 hz it drasticly effects how easy pinch harmonics are to get, and you can control them , but you need a gate , of the whole rig will just scream with feed back
