    For the grenade the style of pineapple casing on the grenade i'd say for world war one grenades was more typical of entente grenades like a mills bomb or f1 but more generally i'd say the closest match would be the Japanese Type 97 of ww2.

      I wouldn’t be suprised if GW introduced a new type of grenade for the imperium forces, if you didn’t know, The US Marines is Experimenting and probably has issued the MK21 Mod 0 Scaleable offensive hand grenade. Where you can stack grenades on top of each other to increase the explosive yield, one is about as powerful as a regular grenade, and then it multiplies with each subsequent grenade, you can stack them up to make a breaching/satchel charge for demolishing buildings or walls.

    1: The rifle most resembles the US Army M1918 Browning Auto-Rifle. As such the bayonet could also resemble the US M1917 bayonet which also has sort of a leaf shape... and also came in a variant featuring a saw-toothed top edge.
    2: The metal can at the bottom of the backpack (I have seen some depictions with this) resembles the Wehrmacht gas mask can from WWII.

    The high collar could also be a nod to the Imperial uniforms. The German überrock (overcoat) had a high collar in a contrast colour, most usually red, and considering that other Krieg uniforms, namely the officer uniform, also uses details from both British and German ceremonial uniforms, I wouldn't discount the possibility of that being the case.
    I have incidentally done far more research than I probably need to, in the interest of building a Krieg commanding officer costume.

Maybe your odd adherence to the colour brown haha? But I jest, a cracking video mate. I'm glad to have more people recognising the various sources of inspiration that goes into the death korps. It's a bit sad when the Guard regiment that is meant to be the analogy of the western front trench warfare of the great war gets devolved to simply ' shovel wielding germans in space' as it more often than not does on the internet.

  • @gordondelacroix253
    @gordondelacroix253 3 года назад +9

    For the grenade, I suggest it is roughly inspired by the Austrian zeitzunder rod grenade, which has a pre-fragmented body almost exactly the same.
    For the shoulder pads, I think they are inspired by the experimental american, light armor, with arm defenses No.5 and also by the issued Italian farina armor.
    I think the ammo pouches are also inspired by the Italian m1907 equipment, or even the Austrian m1895 cartridges pouches, as the Italian has almost the same proportion and the austrian has the same button, tho is flater.
    for the shovel well it's most likely a scaled down general service shovel, that was both used in maintenance of the trench and in assaults to fortify a taken position.
    For the gasmask, well although I can't deny the inspiration from the small box, it looks more like what I've seen from respirators, which were devices which uses primitives oxygen tanks, and where used in fixed or important position. Devices that come to mind are the draeger (both used by France and Germany) series and the French Tissot. Otherwise pretty spot on

    4:25 Interstingly enought, the crest on Adrian helmet has also a protective role, as it is suppose to portect from projectiles comming from straigth ahead by deflecting them rather than letting them impact the flatish top of the helmet. Which strikes me as quite trench-warfare oriented since most threats (artillery) are gonna come from above, so good detail to add to the Kriegers aside from looks I guess?

    I know that its an oldish video but:
    There actually are historical helmets that combined the general shape of the stalhelm and the adrian ventilation comb, the Polish wz. 28 helmet and the Soviet SSh 36 (as well as mentioned in the video many fire fighter helmets).
    Tall collars were common in Austro-Hungarian (early war versions anyway) and Russian armies though those were standing collars rather than the stand and fall collars like the Kreigers seem to have have.

    I think the shovel is a cross between the stand German trench shovel and the American M1910 which had a more spiked shape than the German or French counterparts as well as the Americans used a crossed handle. Though the handle wasn't naked wood, but instead used a stamped tube welded together that was less likely to fracture than the wood and was better as a melee weapon, but would often bend under heavy use. The M1910 saw extremely limited use during ww1 as Americans dug few trenches, mostly occupying French and British trenches. But it did see extensive use with the USMC during WW2.

    In my opinion, the uniform is really a German design, since ww2 German great coats were also double breasted, and the cuffs remind me more of Swedish sleeve cuffs which Germany also used. But by far, the Death Korps engineers look far more like Germans than the standard infantryman, in uniform consistency.

    Actually, I think I recall seeing photographs of US Doughboys using Shovels with a T-Handle. I forget where and when I saw them. So many photos exist of the war.
    Some US Army units also used French Adrian Helmets. Most notably, the Harlem Hellfighters of the 369th Regiment.
    The US Army, unofficially, used a belt with a single strap on it as well. Post-War, these were confiscated when US soldiers returned home because they were not regulation uniform components, despite how iconic the belt had become. I think the US soldiers also used patties, was it? Well, the wraps around the legs I believe were adopted were the same as the British.
    I also recall seeing some US Uniform designs with the high collar that the Death Korps use as well. High collars were a common theme among civilian attire for men. I know the US Army had a high collar uniform design, I write fanfiction and was in need of a uniforms for a fictional school in one of my stories, and I came across a picture of a Reenactor wearing a Doughboy uniform with a high collar.
    The high collar, though, appears to have been quickly eliminated. The thing was described as uncomfortable and was not retained for later uniforms. I think it was actually used on the US Army's Trench Coat at the time. Most images we see, are of US Doughboys without their trench coats.
    It could also be a technicality. Some later trench coats did feature a higher collar as there are artist and photographic pictures of soldiers with high collared trench coats. I believe some later trench coats were also designed with high collars in popular media as well.
    If I recall right, there was actually an attempt to use shoulder guards in conjunction with helmets. I recall there were a number of programs, some in the USA, and the rest elsewhere for shoulder guards. But none of those programs panned out as the armor offered little protection overall for increased weight and provided discomfort to the soldiers.
    Another possibility of the shoulder guards is that they are a fantasy element or a retroactively added addition. Since all of the Imperial Guard have shoulder guards. As do a number of modern, real-world militaries, though when Warhammer 40,000 was first created, I don't think those were even in thought.
    I think the US Army also used squared off ammo pouches as well. They were not retained when the US Army found better gear. The US Armed Forces actually used a number of European concepts. There were even a number of US Navy Cruisers built with the Tumblehome Design that France was using on its Pre-Dreadnoughts. The costs and concerns with the design at the time led the US Navy to obviously switch to a more convention design at the time until the Zumwalt-class was constructed.
    Actually, the US Military would import many European weapons for years and make use of them.
    The 37mm Anti-Tank and Tank Guns the US Army started out the Second World War with, were actually licensed built German designs modified slightly for American use and that had nothing to do with the guns themselves, despite repeated upgrades to the 37mm guns themselves, but were more to do with elevation and direction as well as the tow hooks. The Germans somewhat complicated their own carriages for the 37mm as well as a couple of controls. The US Army simplified them or found them inadequate and replaced them with something homegrown.
    The 57mm Anti-Tank Gun the US Army adopted was just the 6-pdr Anti-Tank Gun the British were using, right down to the ammunition. Only a few small changes were made to the carriages and attempts to improve its capabilities were also carried out. The 57mm was a terrible Anti-Personnel Gun and had issues with accuracy out to beyond 1,000 yards and yet 1,000 yards was its prime combat zone with it becoming increasingly less effective as Tanks got closer rather than better.
    The British were figuring that quirk out too, when the 75mm replaced it as an Anti-Tank Gun, followed by other ATGs before ATGMs took over.
    Anyways, history aside, it could be that some aspects of the Death Korps are also not strictly First World War. Especially when you realize they have advanced Mechanized Forces and are the only ones allowed to use Combined Arms Units. So, expanding the horizon is a possibility.
    Actually, if I recall right, the British were the last military to field horse-mounted Lancers. Before the front became static and therefore, the lance was made useless. Of course, it was already useless and the British with them didn't want them!
    The same issue plagued a US Army Cavalry Regiment also issued Lances in the latter half of the 19th Century. They were quick to get rid of them and replace them with Carbines and Sabers, before ultimately getting rid of the latter for daggers and knives.

    I like to believe that because the 1st World War had such an incalculable impact on human psyche, some echo of it appeared in the Warp or in the common psyche of Humanity. And somehow it influenced the Kriegers to create this uniform by integrating elements from many different countries that fought in this war. Maybe that as an aftermath of their civil war, the constant trench warfare and the loss of value for human life during this conflict was pushed to such an extent that it became some kind of morbid caricature of WW1, and as we know the warp love that kind of story, so maybe something that has been created by the trauma of the 1st WW, somewhere in the warp, was empowered by the Krieg's Civil War and started to influence them in some way. Or that it has been such a traumatic event that it imprinted itself on the fabric of human culture, so that 40 000 years ago, when all knowledge of this war has long since vanished from the archives stack and memories of Humanity, It still influence Humanity in the 41st Millenium. As we know that the first murder of humanity created an entity in the warp that looked like Abel (or the other one I don't remember), it is possible that there exist an entity in the warp that echoes the WW1, I would like to imagine it appearing to humans as an adolescent with an uniform that kinda looks like the one from Krieg, but oversized so that it does not fit the wearer. It would not speak, and the only thing you could hear while in it's presence is it's quiet wailing, but that this whailing carries with it all the horror, sadness and absurdity of the conflict, forcing mortals to take in all the suffering of the entire war in an instant, shattering their minds utterly. Maybe a bit overpowerd, it being absolutely impossible to get rid of, like the trauma from this war, and it's wails being psychicly carried across an entire world for everyone to hear, as it makes them slowly lose all joy and drive as they are slowly impregnated with the absurdity of their lives and of the Imperium, as they realize that the galaxy does not hate humanity, it hates itself at an existential level, so that trying to improve their lives and the Imperium is pointless. (Sry for the grammar/orthograph mistakes, I'm not a native speaker and I should realy go to sleep)

    Great breakdown of the uniform and basic equipment utilized by a Death Korps Guardsman! It's good to see the other powers on the western front having their inspired pieces represented. Most people really dig the German vibe and give these guys a German accent in their minds for a lot of reasons, one being that the planet's name was Krieg, of all things. Definitely appreciate the points for the French and British though.

    Finally someone breaking it down. I grew tired correcting people who were like "Ahaa, Kriegers are WW1 germans on steroids.." or smth like that. Basically it is just the shape of the helmet and nothing else.
    Edit: Okay, a few things more than the helmet.^^
    And concerning the collar of the trenchcoat. It's design looks 18th - 19th century coat more than anything else.
    Adds to the anachronism which, imo, is the fascinating aspect of this and a few other Guardregiments. Think of the Praetorians for example.

    Two things real quick, the Death Riders and Krieg Officers are both inspired by French Cavalry in helmet and uniform aswell as that shovel looking like an American Entrenchment tool from WWII.
    Oh wait I just realized the Lucious Pattern Lasgun also resembles the U.S. made Browning Automatic Rifle.

    • @gokbay3057
      @gokbay3057 Год назад +2

      Some depictions of cavalry and officers are brighter reminding me of the French however I don't think it is so cut and dry. Germans had cuirassiers as well. So the breastplate doesn't make it certain that they are French. While the helmet is relatively similar to the infantry helmet but with a more elaborate crest. Which certainly is a similarity for French cavalry but the ceremonial uniforms of the German heavy cavalry was not all that different (specifically the Cuirassiers and Bavarian Heavy Cavalry). As for the sword, the basic "P-guard" was common but many (especially heavy cavalry) had complex guards similar to the ones the Krieger sabers are shown to have. Thought the French sabers certainly fit the look as well.
      French Hotchkiss machine guns also look similar. It's full name Lucious no. 98 is a German influence however, based on the Mauser 98 rifle/KAR98 carbine variant.

      @@gokbay3057 the Death Riders and Officers Cuirass is specifically based on French Calvary not the Germans, Grenadiers and Engineers on the other hand specifically wear German WWI Lobster Armor. The only thing German about Krieg Officers and Death Riders are their knee high boots which were the German standard up until they lost WWII.
      The Luscious Pattern Lasgun has zero resemblance to the Kar 98 or any other German rifle from WWI or II. It is just a B.A.R. with some radiator fins attached to the barrel.

    • @gokbay3057
      @gokbay3057 Год назад +1

      @@MrPikaGammer 1. Tbh Knee High Boots are standard for cavalry everywhere. You kinda need the protection of the leather. Thought for some half chaps/gaiters are worn over short boots to replicate the effect (also a lot of modern non-professional riders do not have specialised riding boots so wear gaiters over the shoes for protection. I was taking riding lessons 8 years or so ago (before I started highschool, I recently graduated from university) and I wore those on top of my regular shoes. I have always loved the idea of owning a pair of tall boots, shame they are commonly only sold for women nowadays).
      2. Yeah, I said the name, not the look.

      @MrPikaGammer Год назад +2

      @@gokbay3057 I was more mentioning the knee high boots because of the Kreig Officers who tend to not be on horseback and unlike regular Kriegers don't wear ankle high boots and putties.
      Honestly yeah it is a shame that knee high boots for men have pretty much disappeared, what you can find are sadly rotting and the leather has turned brittle.

    • @gokbay3057
      @gokbay3057 Год назад +2

      @@MrPikaGammer I think it is mentioned in the fluff somewhere that the (higher) Krieg Officers tend to be ex-Death Riders even if they are commanding infantry, armour or artillery. Because Death Riders are chosen with independent thinking as a preferred quality, which tends to make decent officer material if they survive enough battles to be promoted. And that even after being reassigned they like to keep the knee high boots instead going back to putees because it is more comfortable.

    I think that the armor of some of the kriegers kinda reminds me a farina class armor, used by the Italians in WWI, the armors weren't effective,it were easly pierceable, their only purpose was to make the soldiers feel invincibile while suicide charging under the command of Luigi Cadorna

  • @XanderTuron

    Before watching I am going to take a swing and try and guess what the elements are.
    The helmet looks like a German Stahlhelm with a crest inspired by the French M15 Adrian helmet. The gasmask looks like a German gasmask crossed with a British box respirator. The trench coat looks like it's inspired by a French model (the inspiration looks very obvious in the official artwork depicting the DKK with more blue toned uniforms). The puttees, while commonly associated with British soldiers/soldiers from the British Empire, were something that were also somewhat commonly used by the other combatants as well. The webbing and ruck sack look pretty German while the grenade looks like a French F1 or a British Mills Bomb. The shovel looks like it takes inspiration from an American model due to its T shaped handle (a lot of European entrenching tools of the time tended to either have a plain handle or a knob).
    Edit: looks like I generally came to the same conclusions, though I managed to completely overlook the bayonet.

    the fighting style of the death Korps most likely resembles the USMC and Imperial Japan. With the USMC refusing to retreat when the British and French told them to. The US Marines then donned their gas masks and then got into extremely bloody close combat with shovels and bayonets. the Japanese part of the fighting is because of their love for their emperor and willingness to die for him while doing bayonet charges.

    They were also tasked with handling deserters, routers and surrenderers.
