same with OCD. I think for me, it’s just that the obsession with life & death, ethics, morals, it’s all easy to fixate on in the worst ways possible.
with psychosis, i think it’s just a “logical” way of thinking, i guess? as logical as it can get at least. if you’re hearing voices in your head and seeing things, people who are in that state think that it’s something supernatural or “divine”.

As someone who's dad has schizophrenia it is INCREDIBLY important that there is someone ALWAYS checking in with them and making sure they ARE taking their meds. Intrusive thoughts and symptoms do not go away 100%, 100% of the time with medication and relapsing can happen. It can also lull them into a sense of comfort when the meds are working and often times they feel they are ready to take themselves off the meds because they're "cured". It may not have been 100% intentional on her part when she stopped taking the meds. I do not believe that part is her fault at all - imo it was the care teams fault. They should have been looking out for her, they knew she had no one else that will hold her accountable for taking her meds and STAYING on them (the hardest part.)
All around a very sad case.

Facts. She continuously checked in with her care team, but it doesn’t seem that they ever followed up with her. Which is insane since she was a convicted killer who clearly had homicidal tendencies without medication and social assistance. She felt alienated and no one cared. Stress and depression have a huge impact on mental health, schizophrenia is no different. It’s no surprise she had another episode considering her social environment. I feel so awful for her.

According to my mom, who has worked in a mental hospital for over a decade, it is quite common for people with scizophrenia to suddenly stop taking their meds. Part of the disorder makes them stop taking it, convincing them that they are all better now. As someone who loves several people with schizophrenia, sometimes the medication stops working. Even after years of it working it can change and your body can gain a tolerance to the medication. My sister has called me in the middle of a psychotic episode telling me that her medication is causing her schizophrenia. She had actually gathered all her medication and was in the middle of flushing it down the toilet when I got to her. It can just happen in a days time. @veneciaporter9015 idk much about schizophrenia still, but a common reason that people stop taking their meds is because they suddenly think they're cured and straight up shouldn't take it anymore because they don't need it. I'm not sure if that counts as a delusion or not 😅
Another thing is that meds don't completely wipe out mental illness symptoms, it just makes them way more manageable. Someone with schizophrenia can still have hallucinations and delusions while on meds. In that state, the mind can make up any reason to stop taking it.

Now add in that it's not uncommon for people with several mental illnesses, one of them schizophrenia, to stop taking their meds out of nowhere because they are absolutely convinced they don't need them anymore or that they're harmful to them or something like that. Not saying it 100% wasn't her fault she stopped taking them, but I do think it isn't that simple to say "she chose not to take them anymore" because her mental health might've had an impact on that as well. Either way, one thing is absolutely clear: she did not get the help she needed for almost all of her life and only got some help after a tragedy hat already happened. And even after that she didn't receive help for as long and extensive as she needed and when she seemingly felt at another absolute breaking point and tried desperately to get help… she was mostly left alone with it once again. And unfortunately this is not an exception of how people with mental illnesses and similar struggles are treated, it's the norm. Because of stigma, misinformation and lack of information, a huge issue not only in the general public but oftentimes even in medical professions that should know better. And of course also because of a lack of resources, like therapists and places you can turn to in acute crisis situations (not to even get started on the lack of information and accessibility on/for certain issues in these places). I could probably go on and on about this, but I'm sure you get what I mean without that

It is far more frequent than people think and it isn’t a matter of just saying “Take your medication”. In some cases, patients get paranoid and feel that the medication is harming them, most of those cases, the medication needed to be adjusted. She was not receiving much if any follow up care to monitor her symptoms and response to her medication. @@foxymama9203 yes, exactly that! Just being prescribed medication and that's it just won't cut it usually, with most things, not even just mental health related things. Changes in your life can have an impact, other medication, with some things also diet changes and weight fluctuation. There's a need to check back in and make sure things are still working as intended, even if they did so perfectly when a person first starts their meds or when they get released, as is the case here. The apparent lack of consideration for this was honestly neglectful if she really didn't get much (if any) follow up care, especially after what happened before. And I agree that it's horrifying how she was failed at the A&E. Not having capacity to take care of every person immediately is an unfortunate but known and understandable issue, BUT when a person is visibly deteriorating and getting more and more frantic and restless then there's a very clear need for more urgent help and priorities should be moved accordingly

Schizophrenia is so pervasive. Drugs (illicit) make it so much worse with paranoia, hallucinations and psychosis. Patients are told not to take drugs and alcohol, then the doctors turn around and prescribe them all kinds of meds. They don't always understand the differences in the drugs and become confused and angry. My sister was schizophrenic most of her life. She knew the psych meds helped her (after years of treatment and finding the right ones) but she was bad about thinking she was cured when she started feeling better and would stop them. Psychosis would come next. That is the WORST with attempts to unalive herself. I still pray for her, gone on to heaven now.

the best way i can describe it to people who dont understand this, is that when you’ve been severely abused most of your life, positive and genuine interactions feeling awkward at best (because you truly dont know how to interact) to suspicious and fake at worst.
my brain is always telling me that people don’t actually love and like me, they’re just faking it because they want something. so i get actual anxiety attacks because im always waiting for the other shoe to drop. i never take things at face value and im always trying to decipher ulterior motives. it really sucks. i hope that i can eventually move past it. what i can say, is that my current friend group is extremely positive and they me given me so much grace and patience. for the first few years i was super flighty and suspicious and i was always thinking the worst. but its been 5 years now and ive gotten to a point where i actually trust them to be honest and upfront.

As someone who comes from a family that has some HUGE genetic disposition for mental illness, I feel so bad for Nicola. I’ve seen this with my own uncle, when the family is in denial about the illness from early on, schizophrenia can be even more destructive and dangerous. Many parents want to label it as “difficult child”, then the person gets into drugs as self medication, it makes the problem worse, to a point where it’s almost untreatable.
My uncle committed suicide, after years of suffering and of violence towards his family. He tried to kill me while in a psychotic break when I was a baby because he thought I was a messenger of the devil (we are a fervently atheist family).
We don’t have to judge too harshly a schizophrenic person that stops taking meds. My uncle couldn’t stand his : it made him so drowsy that he couldn’t go hiking, he couldn’t concentrate on anything so he couldn’t read, music and TV have him migraines, he couldn’t hold a conversation or articulate complex thoughts. He was basically going mad in another way.
For some reason, I remember him when he was stable, he was an incredible human being, highly intelligent and compassionate. But the illness and the lack of support destroyed him and the whole family. My mom would get highly realistic night terrors while pregnant with me about my uncle coming into the labour room and dismembering me, and doctors think that this gave me trauma before I was even born.
So PLEASE don’t let a psychotic person go untreated, even if you have to make hard decisions and face the illness.

Either way it's been really hard and I think it could bring quite a bit of peace knowing people are talking about them..
And I'd be more than glad to help out if you needed inside stories or translation help. Hope you at least could consider.
    Much love x

I don’t even know you but I’m thankful it WASN’T you & that you’re still walking this earth the same time as me. I’m sure you have lots of loved ones that feel the same. It shouldn’t have been you.. it shouldn’t have been them either. I do hope Eleanor gets a chance to cover the case but either way I think the next time I get a few minutes of quiet time I’m going to see if i can find anything on my own. Unfortunately one of the issues with mental illness is that often once treatment begins to work and the person begins to feel better they feel like they don't need the medication anymore and without regular checking in they are vulnerable.
This case is tragic because with proper care and earlier intervention Marion and Sally may not have tragically lost their lifes.

As someone who has a brother with diagnosed schizophrenia and literally just went through a TERRIBLE spell two weeks ago. if she was diagnosed, she wouldn't ever be in the right mind to realize what was happening to do anything about it. Even if she was diagnosed likely no help would have came, at least here in the states it doesn't. My mom and brother fight like Eleanor described the fights between the mom and daughter. When my brother is going through an episode he calls my mom the devil and he wants to get rid of the devil. So she's not allowed alone with him just incase, and we always have one or two strong men around because he likes to try running through windows or beating down doors. His worst episode was last year January, absolutely no one would help, it took us calling the cops 5 times in a single day for them to actually say "well we could take him to get a shot but we'd have to bring him back here after". We managed to get him checked into a mental hospital after a WEEK of being here and he was checked in for 2 months and was still not 100% right when he came out. This time we took him to the regular hospital 3 times before a cop decided he was going to call a mental hospital himself and make them give him a room (thankful for that officer). It's a horrible horrible illness and they don't know when it's coming or what they're doing throughout. It's as if a whole other person takes over. Every time he's here for an episode even if it's just a day we keep all the doors locked and the dogs have to stay in a locked room as well because he either tries to have sexual interactions with them or kill them, just like everything else.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 25, I was experiencing (non-violent) manic episodes for around a year, and I had begged my psychiatrist who I have been seeing since I was 15 for a diagnosis, but this was during the height of Covid and so I wasn’t able to see him in person, and he was against diagnosing me over Telehealth. So I ended up having a manic episode that led up to a psychotic break at the end of 2021, right after Christmas. It got so bad that I voluntarily put myself in a mental hospital and, finally, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. During the observation period at the hospital, I had extremely vivid hallucinations and was at my breaking point. I was in the hospital for two weeks before they considered me to be stable enough for release.
I am not, and have never been a violent person, so I didn’t have any sort of violent outbursts toward anyone. But I did have a lot of internalized issues with myself, and deeply struggled with horrible insomnia due to my mania, and this insomnia led me to have delusions and almost entirely stop making sense to anyone I was talking to. And I ended up losing my job because of this, despite that being highly illegal in most circumstances, in this case it was allowed because I didn’t have a prior diagnosis, and they wouldn’t admit it was because of something related to my mental illness.
Basically saying, if my psychiatrist had simply been willing to evaluate me, after I had been BEGGING him to, or at the very least refer me to someone else who would, my life may have been much different around that time, and since then.

it enrages me that no one was checking in on nikola and making sure she was taking her medication.
it’s incredibly common for people on psych meds (including myself!) to stop taking the medication once they feel better because they’re convinced they’re “cured” or something similar. once nikola was on her own and doing well i think it’s entirely possible that she became convinced that she didn’t need her meds anymore and that she could function without them. if she was getting regular check-ins like she was promised someone would have noticed that.
this whole case is just incredibly sad. if she had gotten the correct help at the right time i truly believe she could have had a wonderful healthy life. many people with schizophrenia do. but she was let down.

She consciously made a list out of anger possibly in the past? But they were all in there to be crossed out and to be killed? Point is I don’t understand how they put it down to a psychotic episode when the list of names could’ve been made consciously with the intention to kill.

I know what it's like to go through these things with great support systems, access to help, knowledge of my condition: and it is still very hard. I can't imagine what it's like without those things and the thought of it makes me wanna cry. still, in the end, she had control and I believe it was both a mistake on her part and the police/hospital staff, had someone been caring the second "round" from nicola this wouldn't have happened.

About a month or two would go by, he'd go completely off the deep end and get sectioned. He'd get back on the meds and things would start getting better. And then they whole cycle started over. Why it is Nicola's responsibility to take her meds, it's frightening what the mental illness can convince a person is happening.

This is something she’s getting better at also. It’s so important to get this very early and always be on top of it she’s almost 11 now I still help her shower she can do most things on her own and still wants her privacy bless her only me or her big sister can help her. I feel so sad for her this girl was failed. This was neglect. I noticed this my dad at 68 noticed it her dad was a bit in denial but I pushed on and got her a psychiatric dr she still sees and she has LCSC unit in school one to one help she’s doing better. My brother is the cause of every issue in our family home and he uses his mental health for an excuse to his disgusting behaviour towards our mother. I don’t and won’t ever sympathise with him. Just cause someone has mental health, they choose their own actions at the end of the day and it doesn’t mean their actions should all be excused, they also ruin the lives of people around them. But, if the voices tell you enough that you don’t need to take them, you stop taking them. The meds don't stop you from getting quite unwell, they also have really bad side effects. This combination can convince you that your problems would go away if you stopped taking the meds and the sad part is once you're off them it can spiral really badly really quickly.
