  • Spooky Corey returns in the all-new "Tiki Bar... of Terror!" as we cover a strange VHS series of promotional kids shows McDonald's put out in the 90s and early 00s that combined live-action hijinks and the animation of famed Nickelodeon stalwarts Klasky-Csupo (Rugrats, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Rocket Power, etc.).
It's...fine? And horrifying! And spooky? Maybe not as spooky as they'd like it to be if I'm being honest.
Anyway, this month on Too Many Tapes, we're looking at The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald: Scared Silly

The design of Ronald McDonald in the Klasky-Csupo style is kind of cute and honestly, the constant Devo singing is the only thing keeping me away from it. Like, bravo, you’re drilling the awesomeness of DEVO (“Go Monkey Go! Go Jojo, go!”) into kids’ heads, but it’s a headache.

Left hand on the wall of the maze is legit great advice. Try it in Bethesda game dungeons.

Klasky-Csupo also did Duckman for the USA Network.

MAN I LOVED THIS TAPE AS A KID! Now that I'm older, I can see the cheese for what it is, but I still get the nostalgic fuzzies. I very much remember the 'plate setting' game, and I hate to say it, but the 'you always start with the salad fork!' bit has lived rent free in my head for 20 something years lmao. Solid review though!! And I really enjoy the spooky tiki bar set up.

I love Sundae the dog. He’s an abomination, but his puppet is beautifully constructed and he sounds like Jiji from Kiki’s Delivery Service.

OMG! I remember this tape from this series from our Childhood! The Live Action Segments of these tapes were like a cross between Pee-Wee's Playhouse and Jim Henson's The Storyteller and Sundae the Dog on the other hand sounded like Smithers from the Simpsons! (no seriously I saw Joey's Cartoon Palooza's review of it back in 2017!)

Am I the only one who swears the McDonald Car is voiced by Bruce Campbell in a uncredited cameo? I can't unhear it.

No, it's Charlie Adler, same voice of Hamburglar.

The live action Sundae always bothered me as a child, glad to see you agree it's not good. That being said I can't help but feel some warmth to these mcnuggets of nostalgia. I always wanted to actually visit that live action set. These films aren't great but they weren't ever really aiming to be and given the truly awful tie in media that does exist. Somehwat passable is certainly a step above the rest. Can't deny the camping song is catchy and has stuck with me over the years.

They paid to run this on TV as a special event, but I can't find any reference to that. Maybe McD's memory-holed it. You can tell they spent a ton of money on it and I remember having the impression they were hoping this could be a real series or at least a huge hit on video. I also remember it having a big paid display in the children's clothing section of a department store in the mall. There was a big treehouse with a TV in it playing one of the videos on a loop. Pretty sure they had merch for sale by the display too. This was six years after their NES game bombed and ten years after the Mac and Me disaster. I'm thinking they spent an outrageous amount of money on the project and hyped it to investors then downplayed it when it didn't get the response they wanted.

Excellent! I completely forgot about these. I don’t think I ever did see one but I sure did bug my mom for them whenever we went to McDonald’s. SPOOKY 👻
