    Is There Really Such Thing As "Stress Free Singing"?
    I see many vocal coaches (and their students) promoting the idea that "there should be no stress while singing" and therefore frustrating the heck out of singers who think there is "something wrong with themselves" because they can't, over night, achieved this "stress free" singing.
    (this also gives a vocal coach "tribal knowledge" to keep you coming back to them as the only one who has the answer to this elusive concept)
    This is nonsense and here's why:
    Singing is like a sport. And with any sport, it's not the absence of stress, it's the management of stress that makes a great athlete.
    Think of it like this:
    When Lionel Messi is going to goal, do you think his body is "stressed?"
    (Anyone who says it isn't has never played a sport before).
    But Lionel has learned the art of training his body and mind for that moment when it's time for him to step on the gas, take on 3 players and score what "looks" like an "effortless goal."
    But you can be assured, it was not done "without effort" or without "stress."
    Lionel achieved this through training his technical abilities as well as building stamina and muscle memory to achieve this consistency.
    Now it is true that some styles of singing require less stamina than others and therefore can be accomplished with less strength training.
    In other words, singing a light pop song requires very little "strength" in the sound whereas singing a heavy rock song often requires incredible strength and stamina.
    This is also true for those (like myself) that want to push their "limits" and abilities to be all they can be. This of course requires more "effort" and technical training.
    With that said, there are many stages to building this "stamina" and it's ok to "find yourself" as one first starts with "damaging street singing" (with total stress) and going through the different stages of learning how to manage this stress away form the voice through correct training.
    If I didn't show the different stages of this process, and only showed "perfection", people would never learn that these people are all human, having to work on their craft just like yourself.

      Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy the cat sound is a perfect way to teach a student the imagery of how the sound travels from the mouth (chest) to the mask (middle/mix) and then finally the back of the head (head/whistle) it can also strengthen bridges. And from what I've studied there are two sounds that build the voice truly. "Ahh" and "uhh"... I'm actually not a hundred on the last one and am wondering your science behind clamming there is only one... thanks

I could recover the placement of my voice and start to progress ... .who does not believe that the sls does not work ... see brett maning himself interpret a queen song so that they go as he does wrong ...

    I studied SLS at my first college and just didn't understand it as my teacher was not a great teacher. When I went on to study music and university a tutor there began to teach me how to sing further back with a "lower larynx" and it really changed my life. I now sing with very little strain, am I low tenor but can now sing comfortably in alto and higher alto ranges with strength. I agree that a lot of the terminology is quite iffy but it's principles and messages are good enough. This video comes across pretty anti, almost laughing at the technique of SLS. Not sure I agree with everything you say but I will respect your opinion Ken!

    Everyone should see this video with an open mind. I'm a singer and vocal teacher myself, and I use some SLS approach in my teaching, and I also use Ken's approach a little bit. See, every singer is different, so different approaches may be applied to different students. In the end, one thing is for sure, the best way to practice singing, is singing itself. Do what works for you, be honest with yourself, and please keep an open mind, explore, and don't be afraid take risks. Thanks Ken Tamplin for this video.

    SLS is about learning to sing from low to high in full voice with a relaxed throat/no unnecesary neck tension. Don't understand how one can seriously argue against it

    • @masonkyle6318
      @masonkyle6318 Год назад +2

      I think the general idea of SLS is very beneficial to any singer. But you're probably right. If someone wants to advance beyond that and for example learn how to belt real high and beefy, they would have to look elsewhere. But for a complete beginner or someone who sings with too much neck tension or too high a larynx, I think SLS would be quite right

    I've exercised Brett Manning for thousands of times and never made an improvement. It made me so frustrated that I've quit many times. I thought that singing is just not for me. Maybe I haven't done the exercises the right way. But my love for music and singing is enormous and I've always came back to try again and again. Once I've found Ken's daily vocal exercises video and I've finally made a big progress just by doing that. It restored my hope very quickly and I've started singing again. I still don't know how to sign head and mixed voice, but my chest voice is much much better. I can sustain a note, relax the throat, sing higher than I've ever could, without pain and suffer, and my voice sounds good, I'm starting to like it. It sounds good when it's not squeezed, when it's free. That's my honest opinion. I can't wait to get home from work so that I can exercise and experiment, and maybe one day I could sing some songs I've always wanted, it would be a dream come true. Thank you Ken!

    I absolutely agree.
    I have learned SLS about 4 years.
    Before learned SLS, I had could power, high notes, low notes. I had could ROCK singing. Not scale, But actual ROCK song!
    But after SLS, I lost everything.
    Now my voice? No power, No range, small volume.
    Stevie wonder, Luther vandross, Michael Bolton and ETC.
    They could be legendary singer by only Seth's method?
    Hm... Maybe they had greatest talent from childhood.
    Guys, Think about this.
    If SLS made there legendary singer, Why we can't be pro singer? Why still we can't powerful high notes?
    I saw many SLS instructor and SLS student who can't sing well...... OR never show singing.
    Guys, You are thinking now?
    ....
    Sad truth.

      truth, I've been there too, after too much SLS technique you start losing power on the higher registers. The best is to make exercises for every technique you are actually going to use in your performances, cause once you leave one aside, you start getting rusty, and it takes some time to recover all that progress

    One of the hardest things to do in classical singing is to start in pianissimo grow to fortissimo and back to pianissmo again. It's more a question of training and training and understanding the body, rather than just push your limits and die, every sport is like that to be honest.
    Crooning singing from the 20's to 60's is very based os SLS. With the invention of the microphone, it was now possible to capture the intimacy of SLS bacause it could take the bass from soft notes etc , even a whisper. Go listen to Bing Crosby and tell me it's bad... those danm beautiful low notes could only be heard from a short distance, the mic helped capture it like he is on your bed whispering in your ear.
    Classical singing was developed when there was no microphone and speakers so they studied and trained to achieve the best best way to sing and be heard in a big theater with a big orchestra, and not hurt your vocal chords. Nowadays it's a question of art style and culture preservation, and the vast info acquired during the centuries.
    Now, a really good singer will have this volume dynamics. And with the MIC in a record there is no rule, if the singer can make you feel the emotion he intended, he did it.

  • @magdab.5277
    @magdab.5277 5 лет назад +2

    Hi!
    I agree with you. I've been singing for 10 years. I'm one of those singers whose chest register has always been "in the right place". I didn't have problems with powerfull notes. What I had to work on was my head voice. And - like many others - I had to learn how to get to really high notes with my chest register. It was going really well until I got to this SLS idea that everything has to be relaxed. Anytime I put more pressure on my voice I would feel like I was doing something inherently wrong and I ended up being too afraid to sing with power. Well.... The bright and light side of my voice improved, but I lost my strength. I thought that I had nodules due to former "improper" technique. So basically for me it's not the approach itself (exercises, tone, placement) but the THOUGHTS, BELIEVES, IDEAS it carries. The way you think of something determines how you do it or even if you do it at all. For clarity - safety first, that's for sure, but if the method makes you afraid of singing then you should change it ;)

    The very foundation of what I use is appoggio. I have just pushed the compression and support limits far beyond what appoggio teaches. Appoggio also does not provide for vowel modifications for anything other than the 5 Italian vowels. They must be modified considerably for english. Appoggio also does not believe in stretching the upper mid voice and seamlessly connecting into head for tenors to belt into the soprano range. AND has no provision for distorted hyper glottal compression

    There's a well known SLS coach with his vocal demo. It's a "Brady Bunch" visual over a "Veggie Tales" esque vocal of his supposedly singing "live" in "5 octaves". At :21 sec he struggles HARD on a low G4 . At :30, same thing but camouflaged by production. His voice is weak, sickly and unsupported. He has NO chest voice at all. Then he flips into falsetto validating EVERYTHING I've said in my video why SLS doesn't work. The demo claims 5 octaves but it's only 3 with some weird autotune high note.

  • @kentamplin
    @kentamplin  11 лет назад +1

    My method is deeply rooted in Bel Canto / Appoggio. The issues I have with Bel Canto is that Appoggio does not provide to tools for modern singing. Everything from vowel transitions beyond the 5 Latin vowel sounds to hyper glottal compression to stretching chest voice beyond what bel canto deems "safe". I posted Nessun Dorma ( a bit irreverently - which I just threw up the lyrics and hadn't sung it since my early 20's which caused a stir). If you're looking for pure appoggio, I'm not your man.

    this is SOOOOOOOO TRUEEEE MY GOD!! I spent so much money and time on this. The upper registers where sounding good but then when I was going down it sounded like a completely different person. The only reason why you dont have a "break" is because you bridge early but it provides you a weak sound. This technique might be good for someone who sings jazz or something

  • @DarioDazz
    @DarioDazz 3 года назад +2

    The good thing about SLS is that brings out some useful excercise that are powerful for vocal rehabilitation or warm up, but not really consistent to develop strong singing fundamentals. And it's true, never heard Seth Riggs singing, never heard Brett Manning singing. They basically sell a method. Stevie wonder and MJ studied with him but they were already great when they started. Inexperienced singers should approach these methods keeping aware that these are mere products. Experience and good advices make big improvements. There is no magic excercise that simply clicks the voice and transform it.

    I have to say that after some research that I have done I came to the conclusion that your theories are indeed correct and I applause you for taking the real bel canto basic techniques and apply them to your style of teaching. Especially your article about belting (i know it wasn;t on this video), even though I have limitations for some terms and I had to consult a vocabulary, but from what I understood, is great. The "open throat" technique while belting, which also means the larynx is lowered, I noticed in many world famous singers. When I was trying to sing pop, all I would hear no matter the force, was a "childish" sound compared to the deeper sound Whitney, Carey, Aretha and others produce, I hope I did understood this correctly :) That can also make the singer go into the trap of forcing and forcing to sound "big". And that can damage the vocal cords. But when you belt with an open throat you don;t need to push hard, the voice comes out 'big" and strong with less effort, thus such position doesn't damage the voice. But it needs practice and a good teacher to teach all that stuff.

  • @kentamplin
    @kentamplin  11 лет назад

    SLS DOES NOT supply the support mechanism to sing at any volume much louder than speaking.
    It does not teach a bright timbre required to grow a healthy voice over time.
    It advocates "early bridging" which will atrophy the upper mid voice. Like any muscle, if you don't work them, you will lose them. So "pampering" the mid the is wrong. If you want to strengthen a muscle, not avoid it.
    It also teaches early vowel closure and has no provision for "re-opening" those vowels in the upper mid voice.

    I can only partially agree with this... It's clear sls would never work for you cause from the first time I heard yu I new yu were a power singer but I find sls helped me to make non-power songs more controlled, I never experienced or heard in recordings any break in voice to make me believe I was using to completely different voices... It just as was said, made it easier to sing with less effort in my throat, since I just use some techniques and I'm not actually a student of sls I'm not sure but in the interviews etc. I've heard from Seth he encourages diaphragm strength and support even though I heard yu say that its not taught... Sls is a useful tool but I agree that it shouldn't be the only tool in the kit if yu want to be an all round singer

    I want to say something and I would very much appreciate if you answer and give me your opinion about this:
    I found this to be very true. I am an opera singer and once I had a teacher who sang ''popular music'', and he would make me do these weird Nay Mum Gu Gin exercises to bridge. Interesting enough, when I had my mouth closed but the back space was open I could bridge perfectly but when I opened my mouth the break was there and I never understood why that happened. When I started learning to sing classical the old classical book had only open vowel exercises with my tongue stuck sometimes and no consonants, super difficult exercises, and I quickly identified the problem. I was being counterproductive, one of the exercises was to do a messa di voce starting in falsetto and going up to full voice, and eventually I could sing the high notes in full with the falsetto's relaxation. I am not a rock singer and don't do what you do but everything you stated here is so true. Hands down

    Speech level singing is such a scam, real singing is where you achieve a good sound in chest, mixed and head voice. Anything else is a waste of time. SLS is for people with no tone or singing talent trying to sound legit and giving their sham technique a name. It's like saying I'm not a thief, I practice holding other people's property in my possession. Give me a break!!!

    I am speechless. Every points matched my experience with SS and SLS. My experience is so very "tragic" with SLS or SS that my voice was much stronger when I was singing with my own instinct and it become so powerless after I used SS's method. Especially the part u talk about they teach u to bring your head voice down early.

    Imho Sls technique must be studied as support to different tecniques.
    If you want to sing through the passagio, mixing the registers you can do it, but you can have the chance to sing in belting mode.
    And I also tell that Sls exercises helps you to relax your throat ALSO in belting mode.(the "big powerful singing", as you say)
    So, and I answer to you, you'll not weak your vocal chords.
    Infact Leo Wong said the same thing i explained above......

    Thanks Ken. I can see where purists would not like your version of Nessun Dorma. But, I think it was a good way to demonstrate the idea of support without specifically trying to sound like an Italian opera singer. The vowels would have to be shaped differently for a pure opera sound, which usually doesn't sound right in rock music. Keep up the good work. God Bless.

    Ken great points. Tricia Grey my SLS vocal coach whom you may know I believe has placed too much emphasis on the bridge than what you hit on. I believe as an artist it is very important to have the right tone and color to your voice for each song selection.

  • @SaturnineXTS

    Well, I agree about the fact that SLS is awfully timid when it comes to "pulling up your chest voice". They discourage it, and therefore the technique will never teach you to sing rock or stuff like Metallica, where pulling up the chest voice is practiced all the time. It's called "belting", I believe. So I personally would take all the good stuff that SLS can teach me but also learn how to belt and use diaphragmatic support which is so sorely underemphasized by SLS.

    • @voicewire1834

    as a developing singer, I always am researching every singing technique exists. I don't agree that SLS doesn't work, but I would say no matter how long you are trained with SLS You won't get chesty mix. What I think about tension is that as long as I drop being tensioned it goes to falsetto immediately. This way or another there is not any way to keep mix sound without using any effort.
    Even if I use my mixed voice really soft and not loud It totally needs a force to keep that sound in place but ofc it doesn't mean neck tension is good for singing :D I have been working on mixed voice till like 5 months (including finding the right exercises since I don't have a vocal teacher)
    I was able to hit E4 at most, now E5 in full voice at exercises Can I use that on a song? NO :) I just can't use it in a song
    I can't even use an E4 in a song properly. But as u said it is not realistic to say "Do those exercises and u will bridge in 2 days and will get to hit ur highest note without straining"
    As I progress I believe the goal is not to get across the bridge It is building the bridge I would say :D Because I had break and no bridge at all. Now I started to balance my voice and it can go up to E5
    And Obviously, E5 is not a pure chest voice :D But is that over? No, because I can hit c6 with my falsetto. There will be time when I can hit a C6 in full voice but since I can hit E5 really hard that C6 will come in years. Even for using a C5 in a singing without strain I need 5-6 months more or maybe up to a year. And I don't believe I can use c5 easily with SLS or any other technique.
    Some SLS singers sing at a low to medium volume ,They never really sing a rock song that requires more than a light barely connected sound.
    What I am saying is SLS may be good, to begin with. but it is needed to get extra technique to be able to sing at high volumes etc

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  6 лет назад +1

      SLS is vastly incomplete. You won't get a powerful chest voice. They teach a consonant-launched "singing" method (mum, nay, meyow) that is the opposite of Open Throat Singing. I studied SLS in-person with its founder. I moved on to better methods. If it works for you, then fine.
      You will find that by trying to "mix and match" different incompatible singing methods, you will end up with nothing of value.

    Appreciate your passion for real world results. I've been on a mission to learn to sing for about a year and a half. I'm a professional guitar player and I was getting bored w one instrument. I felt I needed to expand my musical talents, however I had never sung a note until my first attempts last year. I recently came across a book about bel canto style. Not until I read that info did I finally start finding sweet spots and made progress. Nuff said. Thanx ken. Hopefully I can afford u at some p

    No Geoff learned from a coach I took from back in the day. The late Maestro David Kyle. Kyle did teach early bridging like SLS, but I believe and have seen over and over again, this is precisle WHY Geoff lost his range. Kyle (as well as Anderson who one of many vocal instructors I have taken from) also drew heavily from Bel Canto.

    I agree with what you say - about the "proof is in the singing" - so true. I came across a few singing teachers online and they looked great, but I was bemused as I couldn't find any youtube videos or mp3 of them singing ANY where! You would think that a great singing teacher (as they describe themselves) would be only too happy to show an example of their own amazing techniques not just in singing out a couple of scales but in an actual song or two.

    IIRC, I read on the Kasho-Do singing blog that SLS might be good for specific venues, like dinner theater "talk singing," or whatever it is called. Personally, I see no value in SLS. Just search google for singing information and watch RUclips videos, but be careful not to do anything to damage the vocal cords, which again, you can learn about with simple google searches.

    Hi Ken! Perhaps you are right and the SLS method has flaws and can be improved. However, some of their vocal exercises may be very useful. Specially, the rolling "RRRR" sound before a vowel. And even the " muh " sound. I am testimony to this.

    I am SOOO glad I came across this. everything is starting to click... I ordered a SLS course about 5 years ago, won't mention any names, and honestly, it did help me develop my mix, but over the years, singing in my chest voice has become next to impossible... when you talked about bringing the head voice down to avoid strain, my eyes got wide, and I started crying because I feel like I'm never gonna be able to sing in my chest voice without sounding whispy again 😢. I wanna order your course, will it resolve this issue I'm having with my chest voice? Also, does it go over developing vibrato? I once had a voice teacher tell me I was faking my vibrato, but never told me how to fix it.

    I'm curious if your techniques have any application to operatic vocal productions. I respect you versatility, but I have been reluctant to try any of your techniques for fear that it might take me in the wrong direction. I know this is a weird request, but are you able to demonstrate any operatic arias or segments of arias? Or, is this something completely different, and not relevant?

I studied it for 4 years with a level 5 instructor, even took a few sessions with the master teachers, and I was always told I was doing everything right and to give it time. Could this explain (though she used Brett Manning's SLS-esque method) why Hayley Williams faced stamina challenges and cracking- and ended up cancelling shows at its worst- when she'd try and bring her signature sound into the 5th octave? Since working with Ron Anderson, who was trained in Bel Canto and made some modifications, she's been pretty unstoppable.
